Editors Note: We wish Councillor Morrish a speedy recovery from his unfortunate encounter in Holsworthy recently.

Village Hall & Social Club Committee As mentioned in the last issue of The Eagle, the newly combined committee have (and are) instigating a number of improvements to the Village Hall.

The first comes with the delivery of the new chairs. These arrived a couple of weeks ago and are kept in the store room. When used they should be stacked 10 high back in the store room. They are very smart and are a valuable asset to the Village Hall and everyone who uses them.

The second will be the new windows being fitted. All villagers need to be aware that these are due to be fitted over the next 4-6 weeks. There will, obviously, be an amount of disruption during this time but the benefits will be fantastic.

Please be aware of this when using the hall over the next couple of months.

Finally, we are finalising the documentation to start the process of replacing the heating throughout the Hall. This is ongoing and updates will be issued when necessary.

A Letter From The Vicar I recently had the opportunity to go to the Holy Land with a group of fellow curates in training from the Diocese. If you are a Radio Devon listener, you may have heard some of the audio diary from our time away. As we travel through Lent and head towards Easter, of the many stories from the trip, there is one that particularly comes to mind. Many of the special sites in the Holy Land have been marked with ornate churches or religious buildings, some almost obscuring the original space entirely. One such place was the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, the place dedicated to where Jesus died and was buried. In this highly decorated building, a central space has been reserved for a piece of exposed rock where Jesus was crucified. They have enclosed it in a box structure and placed a large stone altar table over the top. The result is that to touch the stone, one needs to crawl on all fours beneath the table and reach through a hole to touch the stone. It is a crowded space with many pilgrims waiting to take their turn, but as I crawled and stretched I thought, when was the last time I crawled under a table? I realised that it was probably playing hide and seek with my children. And here the thought struck me, are we playing hide and seek with God? Do we look for him and expect to find him?

Is he looking for us and are we expecting to be found?

The discipline of Lent allows us to spend time in this playful search, to take time and effort to find God or to allow ourselves to be found by him. Perhaps through reading the Bible, praying a prayer, talking to a friend or taking a walk, we will remind ourselves that God is present and even death could not hide Jesus from us. We would also love to invite you to come on Easter Sunday as we celebrate together the joy of finding and being found by God.

Notes from the Parish Council At the beginning of the month the “Emergency Working Group” met up once again, putting the final touches to the Emergency Plan. Risk assessments, a list of vital contacts and parish maps showing locations of such things as wells have been compiled and during March the plan should be complete. At this stage, the council needs parishoners to get involved and join the “Emergency Plan Committee. This committee would meet a few times a year, just to review the existing plan and ensure that the information is up-to-date. If you would like to be involved in any way please contact the clerk or any of the councillors.

Due to the resignation of Paul Williams as PROW (Public Rights of Warden), we are looking for a volunteer or volunteers to take up this position. We are very lucky to live in a beautiful area, made accessible by a network of footpaths. We offer our sincere thanks to Paul, who has acted as PROW since October 2013, for his commitment and hard work. Unfortunately, due to increasing personal and professional commitments, Paul felt unable to carry on. Another very small bird, the Long-tailed Tit, has been a visitor to my bird feeder, in a family of about ten (it is quite difficult to count them). It is not closely related to the other members of the tit family, but it is arguably the prettiest and daintiest of the group. It normally feeds on insects and their larvae but, in winter, it will take seeds and peanut fragments. If you are lucky enough to find a nest, unused, you will discover a most elaborate structure of moss, fur and feathers bound together with hair and cobwebs and frequently camouflaged with lichen, with an The male bird builds several nests, some of them entrance hole near the top of the sphere. RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch 2016 Well, I think my 14 bird feeders in the garden have worked in attracting bird visitors over the last few months.

In this years Big Garden Birdwatch I managed to count 67 different individual birds with 20 separate species (last year I counted 27 individual birds, 13 different species). To say I was mildly excited by these numbers is probably a slight understatement.

The hi-lights of my feathered visitors had to be one of the resident Great Spotted Woodpeckers, a pair of siskins, a marsh tit and my first sighting of long-tail tits in the garden– and there were four of them!!

At the time of writing this note there had been nearly 6.5 million birds counted nationally so far.

Yeast Ring.

Here is a recipe first published in The Eagle in June 1984.

Ingredients 1oz. Margarine; 8oz. Plain Flour; 1oz. Sugar; Salt; 1 egg beaten; 1.5 teaspoons dried yeast; 0.25 pint warm milk.

Cooking Gas mark 6 or 400° for 15 minutes. Reduce to gas mark 4 or 350° for a further 15 minutes.

Method Mix flour, salt, sugar and yeast together. Rub in margarine.

Add milk and egg and beat well to dough.

Leave in warm place covered for 1 hour.

Knead and roll out to the size of a swiss roll tin.

Spread with the following filling, leave about an inch around the edges, which should be damped or brushed with milk.

Filling Dried fruit or apple.

Spread first with 2oz. Margarine, 2oz. Ground almonds. Then the fruit and spices if liked.

Roll up and twist into ring. Snip with scissors every 2 inches almost to the centre of the ring.

Stand covered for no longer than 20 minutes.

After baking, allow to cool and then ice with8almond flavoured icing and decorate with cherries and flaked almonds.

The last two dates of the quizzes are February 27th and March 26th, with the last quiz bound to be the deciding match with everything to play for to become the winners of the Quiz League 2015/6.

Come along for a fun social evening with your fellow villagers and to add more teams into the league.

Each quiz starts at 8:30pm with an entry fee of £1.00 per person. Maximum of 6 people per team. You don’t need to have been involved in previous quizzes you can enter as many or few times as you wish.

Great Torrington Mayfair Rehearsal & Crowning of Torrington Carnival Queen—The Square Wednesday 4th May 2016 Events will start at 6:00pm with Great Torrington Bluecoat Primary School rehearsing Maypole Dancing and the crowning of the May Queen. This will be followed by a performance from STREETZ Dance Crew and then the Crowning of Torrington’s Carnival Queen.

Rowlands Fair will also be in attendance at Barley Grove Car Park with a Civic Opening of the Fair happening at 5:30pm.

Great Torrington Mayfair The Square Thursday 5th May 2016 Events start around 9:00am with a morning service and continue throughout the day. There will be Floral Dancing and Country Dancing during the morning, the crowning of the May Queen around 12 noon and the Cavaliers Entertaining during the afternoon plus much more entertainment for all throughout the day.

A small brown envelope will be attached to the front of your Eagle that should be delivered to either of the editors or given to Barry, the postman who is willing to pick up any from “out of the village” locations.
