They will only go to houses that are decorated or have signs welcoming trick or treaters. No sign no visitors!

It was terrific to see so many people enjoying (and singing along to) the music and spent all evening dancing. There were a few of us who certainly thought we’d met our “Waterloo” on the Sunday morning.

In the absence of the Youth Group being able to organise a collective group, if the older children are planning to visit, please bear this in mind.

Old £1 coins A quick reminder to all village organisations that the old £1 coins are no longer legal tender (in shops) and shouldn’t be accepted. Also, there are some rogue foreign coins being found in takings. Thanks

The Quiz League – The Reminder! It’ll soon be time to come on down to the Social Club and test your trivia. The quiz league title, currently held by ‘The Outsiders’ from Bideford, is up for grabs again. So, from October through to March there’ll be one quiz per month (dates below) on a Saturday at 8.15pm - £2 per person. You don’t have to turn up to every one as there is a prize for each of the six nights. If you haven’t already done so, get your teams (max. 6 per team) together, find a name and make a note of the dates: 20th October 2018 17th November 2018 15th December 2018 19th January 2019 16th February 2019 16th March 2019

Harvest Supper The Harvest Supper will be held in the Victory Hall at 7pm on Tuesday 9th October. Sally Morrish has kindly offered to provide the main course, Cottage Pie, and Rosemary Woollacott will organise the desserts. Geoffrey Clapp will once again be there to conduct a lively auction of produce at the end of the evening. Tickets, price £8 for adults and £4 for children under 12yrs, are now available from Grahame Thomas (560487) or Richard Pengilley (560783). There will also be an opportunity to give thanks for what we hope will have been a successful harvest at the church Harvest Festival service on Sunday 7th October at 6.30pm. All are welcome.

Village Hall & Social Club Committee First things first. Abba Chique. What can we say. Brilliant. Amazing. Terrific. Great Night. Outfits. Hangovers! A huge thank you to Mandy Avery and Paula Baker for organising this evening of fantastic Abba music in the village hall. It was possibly one of the best, if not the best, nights ever seen in Yarnscombe (according to some reviews). Over 270 tickets were sold for the event and pretty much every one of those ticket holders took a turn on the dance floor singing along to each of the Abba hits.

Annual General Meeting 10th October – an important date for your diary! The AGM of the Village Hall and Social Club will be held at 8pm on 10th October to receive reports from the Chairperson, Secretary and Treasurer (Village Hall and Social Club) and elect a committee for the coming year. Everyone in the village is entitled to attend and put themselves forward for election. If there are more nominations than there are places there will be an election on the night. This could be for individual roles or committee membership. Those attending the meeting can vote but there is no provision for proxy votes. So, what does the Committee do? In addition to the full charitable Trustee role in respect of the hall, including maintaining the building and ensuring it is financially secure, the social club and all associated activities of the club are managed and overseen. These are crucial village facilities and need our support. There are currently up to 13 people who form the Committee which was re-formed 3 years ago when the separate Village Hall and Social Club Committees merged. There is a constitution which is available from our current secretary, Lesley Latter, and this sees at the AGM the election of the following; Chairperson Vice Chairperson Secretary Treasurer Bookings Secretary Facilities Officer Bar Manager and Up to 6 others

Photos of the hall In order to promote the Village Hall more widely, we would very much appreciate photos of the hall being used. Did you have a children’s party in the hall? Are there any pictures of a previous Harvest Supper? What about any other events? (Some of the Abba night would be great but my pictures are a bit fuzzy!! – Sharron) We would also be grateful for pictures of the regular events in the hall – bingo, badminton, skittles. Notes from the Parish Council You may have read in last month’s council meeting, that after achieving the Foundation Award of the Local Council Award Scheme, Yarnscombe Parish Council is now aiming for the Quality Award. As of August 2018, only Crediton, Fremington and Tiverton have achieved this award in Devon, two of them being large town councils. One of the many criteria to be fulfilled concerns the ongoing training of clerk and councillors. Cllrs. Cooke and Stephens have therefore recently attended a Councillor training course and should relevant training opportunities arise, council members will do their best to attend. The notice board had to be put in storage, while necessary repairs are carried out to the wall it was fixed to. Minutes, agendas will be posted on website and any other information that may be of interest to parishioners is usually also posted on Yarnscombe’s Facebook page (Thanks Sharron and Richard!) Hopefully, Youth Club is still running and volunteers could be found. It would be such a shame for it to stop, as it is the only facility specifically aimed at the children and young people of the parish. Now that the evenings are drawing in and the weather turns cooler and most likely wetter, walking along the footpaths of our parish is probably not the first thing that comes to mind. Yet, we are still looking for volunteer(s) to take the role of PROW. Once spring arrives again, the footpaths will need more attention, so if you have a couple of hours spare, think it over and contact either Cllr. Williams, any other councillor or myself for more information. Planning – None at present, new planning applications will appear on next agenda for PC meeting on 26th September 2018.

Summer Skittles As winners of the Summer Skittles League, we would like to thank Mike Passmore for arranging it for us all to enjoy. The proceeds (after paying the Hall), we decided we would like to give to the North Devon Hospice. The team will be presenting a cheque in the sum of £226 to the Hospice on 4th October. Thank you Mike from everybody who took part.

Abba Came To Yarnscombe Whether you are a fan of Abba or not, the success of the Abba Chique band at the Village Hall at the beginning of September cannot be under-estimated. 270 people in varying outfits (and shoes) of the era had a thoroughly enjoyable night â€“ luckily the birds and dogs of the village were quiet on the Sunday morning as there were definitely a few delicate heads and sore throats (yes, I am speaking from a personal perspective â€“ Sharron đ&#x;˜Š) !! Everyone who went along seemed to think that if Carlsberg did a great night in the Village Hall, this was it â€“ probably the best night ever! Huge THANKS need to be given to Mandy Avery and Paula Baker for organising the whole event. Of course, at the end of the day, the Village Hall benefitted â€“ your Village Hall.

A Few Words From Mandy Well, what a night! I would like to thank Paula for helping with the ticket sales, I think we worked well together. Also, to the men who helped to put the stage together â€“ thank you Trevor, Mike P. and Jeff. The guys who were on the bar, you were rushed off your feet for the entire evening â€“ Dave, Rachel, Anthony and Chris. A big thank you to Stephen for advertising it in the Journal week after week and to Chris for organising the printing of the tickets, wristbands and posters. Finally, to Sharron for helping with the printing of posters and anything else I needed. A most important job was clearing it all away â€“ a special thank you to Mike P who was at the Hall for most of the day taking the stage apart and to Lesley, Issy and Paula for cleaning most of Sunday afternoon. Thank you to everyone, your help and commitment is very much appreciated. I hope everyone enjoyed the night.

Fleetwood Mac Tribute Band

From the Vicar Dear all You will be aware that our team rector, Mike Clark, has been on sabbatical for the past few months. Some of you will also be aware that Mike has been struggling with issues affecting his health for quite some time. It was his hope and intention that taking time out on sabbatical would enable him to build strength in order to return to the demanding role of team rector and to working to the exacting standard he sets himself. Sadly it has become clear to Mike that he is by no means fully recovered. On the advice of the archdeacon and others, the decision has been taken that Mike will be off sick for the foreseeable future. Paul Bysouth and the leadership team have already met to begin to address the challenges this situation presents, and to plan how best to support each parish to function and to move forward in the present circumstances. A service plan for September and October with only a few necessary adjustments is being circulated. Mikeâ€™s sabbatical has demonstrated that we have many strengths in our congregations, especially in terms of people who are willing to be available to God to use their gifting for His purposes. We can have confidence that God will continue to build His church in the Two Rivers even while clergy numbers are reduced. Thank you for your understanding and support, and also for your prayers for Mike and his family at this difficult time.

Yarnscombe Church Rescue Group News By the time you all read this, the final bits of scaffolding should have been removed and Phase 1, the repairs and immediate renovations so urgently needed, will have been completed. New or repaired cast iron guttering and down pipes, all of which have been repainted, now drain all the roofs keeping rain water away from the walls which, hopefully, will start to dry out. Luke, the stonemason, has finished his repairs and the insertions of three new stone mullions to the north windows together with the pointing to the many open joints in the tower parapet and stair turret. Loose capping stones to the crenellations on the tower have been re-bedded so the prospect of large lumps of stone falling onto the church roof has been removed! The weather vane and cross on the top of the tower, whilst not actually gilded, have been painted gold and much other exterior iron work and door furniture has been painted. Mike Hannam, the builder, has made a new wooden cross in teak to replace the rotten one on the eastern apex of the nave roof which should be fitted in the next few days. All in all, I hope you will feel the church looks really cared for once again. To complete it all there's still a bit of tidying up to do, weed killing the "moat" once again and removing the ivy on the west wall and then everything that we set out to do at this stage will have been achieved. Tim Harris and Louise Brown have started to visit other churches where similar projects to provide facilities to widen the use of the church have already been undertaken so that we can benefit from the experience of others in the exciting prospects of Phase 2 and we shall, of course, keep you informed of progress.

Nature Notes The long, hot summer is over and the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness is with us. Fields are being ploughed, attracting flocks of rooks and gulls to the newly-turned soil, in search of worms and grubs. Hedges are being cut right back which is something I am not greatly in favour of. On the roads - yes, because of road safety, but elsewhere, is it really necessary? Hedges are a source of food and shelter for small birds and a place where insects can hibernate and butterflies can hide as pupae, following the caterpillar stage. The hedges in Somerset and Wiltshire tend to be more recent additions to the landscape and are often composed almost entirely of hawthorn or blackthorn which grow quickly and are covered in berries in the autumn. They prove to be a magnet to the overwhelming flocks of fieldfares and redwings which will be with us in the next couple of months. However, in Devon, we have a lot of small orchards which provide a good source of food for birds and small mammals, like voles and mice. I don't seem to have noticed many wasps about last summer. I know that most people regard them as a nuisance, often attracted to the food in our picnics and the fruit on our trees. Nevertheless, they are, on the whole, beneficial, feeding on harmful insects and flies, and not bothering us as long as we leave them alone. The same thing applies to hornets which are very docile creatures, not likely to sting unless extremely provoked. The Asian hornet is rather nasty, however. It is a very recent newcomer to the UK and, fortunately, still quite uncommon. It is a bit smaller than our native species and has a liking for honeybees, rapidly destroying their colonies when they are discovered. These hornets are a pest and should be reported to the local pest controller straight away - something to keep an eye on next summer.

Youth Group As mentioned in the previous issues of The Eagle, the Youth Group needs help. Can you spare 2 hours on alternative Friday evenings during term time? Can you organise activities, events and visitors to occupy the children for Club evenings? The Youth Club has been running in the village for a long time and the children enjoy going along to the village hall on alternate Friday evenings to have fun, take part in activities and to let their hair down.
