Yarnscombe Newsletter by the Community for the Community Note from the Editors What a busy couple of months we’ve had in the village.

Comedians, singers, cider, pasties, cream teas – it can only mean that the parish of Yarnscombe is a friendly and hungry community to be part of.

Help Yarnscombe Yarnscombe has a busy and friendly village community, but as time goes on there are causes that everyone needs to support.

For the last twelve months or so the Rescue Group for St Andrew’s Church have been actively engaging the parish in raising funds to undertake immediate and necessary repairs to the fabric of the building.

July is the month of the village fete this year being run by the Village Hall & Social Club Committee and the Parochial Church Council on the 14th.

Everyone from near, far and wide are welcome join in and enjoy a BBQ and disco in the evening.

We are sure you all join us in wishing Richard Jewell of Sunnybank a speedy recovery following his recent accident.

It is at times like this, as a rural community, we realise how important the Devon Air Ambulance is. It was able to land safely in the Village Hall car park.

Get well soon Richard.

The Village Hall also needs your support to continue being a valuable community resource – this is a definite “use it or lose it” situation. Please consider hiring the hall for events rather than go “into town”. The events that have been organised by the Committee have been well attended and if you, the residents of Yarnscombe, want to keep a key social building ….……………. well, it’s up to you.

So many groups use the hall for their regular events – short mat bowls, badminton, bingo, model plane flying – as well as being used for parties and wedding receptions.

Village Hall It is with regret and following a review of the end of year accounts, I have to report the Village Hall is in a serious financial position, even after the generous donation from The Yarnscombe Pantoloons reported last month.

You will have seen significant improvements to the hall over the last couple of years including new heating, windows, fascia and re-decoration to name a few. In addition, work has been needed to the children’s play area. Some of these investments have been funded by grants and the Social Club has given significant sums in support.

However, the total cost of addressing further improvements required to meet current health and safety and associated regulatory needs is quite expensive and the funds held by the Trustees of the hall are perilously low.

Funds have dropped mainly because the number of bookings there had been previously is down. As a result, the hall is now underutilised. Why? Because competition from other local halls and venues, some of whom have all been investing in bringing their venues up to a higher standard, is taking its toll.

We are therefore at the stage where the current position can’t continue for much longer.

In order to meet the investment needs (beyond that for which we can get grant) and day to day maintenance/running costs, we will have to launch a fundraising campaign.

The Trustees will be putting together a detailed plan of how to address the financial position shortly but in the interim, please support events in aid of The Village Hall.

Perhaps the first and biggest short-term opportunity will be the upcoming village fete.

Please support this plus other events and contribute generously. We need the village to rally and ensure the hall, and other venues such as the church, for which the YCRG are doing a great job, can stay open and be a safe place to meet.

Play Park Villagers will have noticed that the Play Park had been closed for a few weeks while important repairs were being made, in particular, to the climbing frame following the recent RoSPA visit. The report received was a very positive one with only a couple of other minor issues to be sorted.

Notes from the Parish Council At our last Annual Parish Council Meeting, Cllrs. Brice and Martin were re-elected as chair and vicechairman respectively. The following representatives were also confirmed: • • • • •

Cllr. Williams will do as much as he can and Peter Jeffery will do strimming, if and when needed. In the long term, we are still looking for local volunteer(s) to take on this role. It would suit semi-retired/ retired person(s), who enjoys walking. During the summer, ideally you would need to set aside a few hours a week. We know, that this can be hard at times and we are not looking at a commitment set in stone.

Whatever time you could spare, would be much appreciated. Over the last couple of months we have held a few evening events which were well received by those who came along. It would be great to see some new faces.

Events So Far Comedy Night Attended by nearly 80 people who had an entertaining, amusing and fun-filled evening with Rob Coleman, Nick Wilty, Jane Hill and Mark Hurman. This is the third time Rob Coleman has been to the village MC’ing and always wants to come back as “we’re a good crowd”. He actively follows the village Twitter feed and retweets our events.

Sian Carey Wow. What a voice!!! Sian is one of the lead singers of Fleetwood Mac Songbook (locally based tribute band) and she literally sang the roof off in the Social Club on 2nd June. This was her first gig going solo for 13 years and she chose Yarnscombe for this. What an honour. The social club was nearly full but only 50% were villagers (the rest were her family and friends). She wants to come back too!

From the archives You may recall last month we mentioned that we have been given some old issues of The Eagle dating back 10 years and it is proving interesting reading.

From using a team of people using typewriters to having a three page issue! Treasure hunts to car washes – hummm, that would be very useful right now!

From the Vicar Well here we are, summer holidays about to begin. Eagerly awaited by nearly every young person and perhaps with more mixed feelings for their parents…and grandparents! We have all been subjected to those adverts of children happily running around swimming pools with parents relaxing under an umbrella with their drink and all under a special Mediterranean blue sky.

Hmm, we were never that relaxed when by the pool with our children but we all hanker after those special moments of family delight and peace, time to spend together, that elusive thing Quality Time. And I hope it happens for you this year. The trouble is that even if it does and you do get away together for a whole fortnight, that still leaves 4 weeks of childcare to be planned, hence the mixed feelings. And what of Quality Time the rest of the year?

That's a real challenge, to build in good family time together in amongst all the demands and stresses of life. And there is another thing, we have a heavenly father who also wants to share quality time with us, his children. He knows us and waits with open arms to receive us any time not just special times.

Have a good break if you can, and look for a reconciliation with Him too. Prayer doesn’t need a Mediterranean blue sky!

Yarnscombe Church Rescue Group News Since the last edition of ‘The Eagle’ the Group has been impatiently awaiting the arrival of the final two tenders from the building companies for the work needed to clear the backlog of maintenance items. By the time you read this, we hope that we will have been able to choose a builder and agree a start date for this work to begin – exciting times!

Members of the Group have also been continuing their research into identifying possible Grant Making Trusts willing to support this work, as well as gathering together the documents which will be needed to accompany any applications to them.

We understand that the Village Hall has been having a slightly difficult time recently and that this too will need some support from the community in the months to come.

The YCRG fully supports the Village Hall Committee in their efforts to secure a safe, useful, financially stable and welcoming Village Hall.

It seems undeniable that a vibrant and successful community such as Yarnscombe should have both a good Village Hall and a well maintained, flexible church building. We are looking forward to working with the Village Hall Committee to deliver this.

By working together in this way, I am sure that we will be able to achieve a good future for both these vital community assets.

Nature Notes As we are approaching the summer holidays, I thought it might be appropriate to write about a bird which some of you might see, particularly if you venture to the West of Scotland; namely, the white -tailed or sea eagle. It was once the most wide-spread, commonest eagle in the UK, nesting from the south of England to the Northern Isles. It could even have given Yarnscombe its name, as this eagle, unlike the golden eagle, will happily nest in trees. Yet, by 1918, the sea eagle had been exterminated in this country, shot, poisoned or trapped because of its perceived threat to farm animals or game birds. Its diet is mainly centred around seabirds, but also other birds such as geese and crows. It takes fish, rabbits and hares and will scavenge dead sheep and deer, and seals on the shoreline. Since their re-introduction to Scotland, using birds from Norway, over the past 50 years sea eagles have increased in numbers to about 120 pairs. The population growth is strong and, with the co-operation of farmers and landowners, it is hoped to achieve a target of 200 pairs by 2025. With a wingspan of 2.5 metres, the sea eagle has been likened to a 'flying barn door ', so it is unlikely to be mistaken for a buzzard or kite. Your best chance of seeing one would be on one of the Hebridean Islands, such as Mull, Skye or Lewis but even in Fife, around Loch Leven, they are nesting. The RSPB Reserve there, is well worth a visit, especially in the autumn when the grey geese arrive from their northern Arctic breeding grounds.

It is the height of the breeding season for birds and mammals and I notice that the number of young creatures seen dead on our roads, has increased. They have not had time to adapt to the speed of our cars, so I try to cut my speed to give small birds time to fly into the hedges. Young foxes, roe deer, badgers and squirrels are all very vulnerable, especially in the dimpsey when car headlights can confuse them. So please take care.

Youth Group The Youth Group will be getting together on the 6th and 20th July.

With the lighter evenings and hopefully drier weather, the children may well be able to play in the field.

These dates will be the last dates before the Summer school holidays (yes, already) – hopefully, we will be back in September!!

Please keep an eye on the Youth Group or the village Facebook pages for any events or activities taking place during August.

All children are welcome to come along to the Youth Group whenever they can – there is no minimum or maximum age. All we ask is that any child under the age of 8 is accompanied by an adult. Volunteer helpers are always welcome as we need to ensure that there are at least three adults present each time.

Unfortunately, if there aren’t enough adults we will need to cancel the evening.

It is with regret that due to an increase in other commitments, Sharon Dixon will be standing down as the main contact of the Youth Group at the end of the summer “term” after taking over the reins two years ago.

Sharon has done an amazing job in organising events and activities for the children of the parish and surrounding towns and villages with the help of the rest of the team.

PLEASE HELP! The Youth Club has been running in the village for a long time and the children enjoy coming along on Fridays and for their benefit (and their parents!!) we need it to carry on.

Living in Yarnscombe It struck me recently that we have a lot of new residents in the parish and if they are anything like us four years ago (yes, we’ve been here “that” long!), they’ll quickly realise what a wonderful village Yarnscombe is.

So many of our neighbours we now consider our friends and count ourselves very lucky and fortunate. Over the last four years we have made 3 scarecrows, walked miles all in the name of cider, and encountered the “healthy” eating of big breakfasts and cream teas.

Personally, I have found two new hobbies which I wouldn’t have even thought of when we were loading the removal van in Plymouth in July 2014.

Moving to Yarnscombe was the best decision we’ve ever made!!

Defribillator Dial 999 if you suspect someone is having a cardiac arrest The Ambulance service have details of our defibrillator, the location and the code to open the cabinet and should tell you when you ring them (the defibrillator is in the entrance to the Victory Hall).

The defibrillator has to be kept in a temperature controlled cabinet to prevent deterioration. If you need to access the defibrillator the code to the cabinet is

0000  (four zeros) followed by the Tick This will unlock the cabinet. The defibrillator is automated and can be used by anyone and is self-explanatory once you open the lid to the defibrillator and turn it on - please listen carefully and follow the voice instructions.

(Do not use in wet conditions) If you do need to use the defibrillator, please let me know on 01769 560590 as I will need to replace parts and ensure it is working.
