Yarnscombe Newsletter by the Community for the Community Note from the Editors Last month we said “By the time this issue of The Eagle goes to print, we should have received our new food caddy and black glass recycling box in line with Torridge District Council’s new waste collection and recycling service�. Well we didn’t did we!!

Eventually we received our new black box and large food caddy and have started our new recycling regimes!! We have re-run the details of the rubbish collection in this issue, so we can all be reminded what we need to do. It is worth noting that if the recycling isn’t separated properly (ie. the glass in its own box), the green box won’t be emptied.

Don’t forget the last Monday in May is a bank holiday and all rubbish will be collected a day late.

The new arrangements for black bag and the garden waste collections take effect from w/c 4th June 2018. If you haven’t received your new receptacles give Torridge District Council a ring.

Key Dates in June On Saturday 2nd June, Sian Carey will be singing for us in the Social Club. This is a free event for everyone to come along and enjoy pizza slices đ&#x;˜Š The weekend of 23rd & 24th June is one to forget the diet!!

Saturday 23rd June, is an energetic but fun day!

There is cider involved at select points around

the Parish with a “pasty and a pint� at the end.

On Sunday 24th June is the ever popular Cream Tea being held at Netherne. Times and full information is on page 7.

Notes from the Parish Council Firstly, many thanks to the volunteers who organised the “Big Breakfast” event, held on the 13th May in the village hall. It was very well attended, plenty of positive feedback was received. People commented on the lovely spread on offer and how favourably it compared to similar events they had attended. Monies raised will be equally split between the Church Repair Fund and to buy equipment for the playing field.

We are very pleased to say that thanks to the “Big Breakfast” we have £ 523-41 to enhance the playing field.

We are always open for your suggestions and, if there is something specific you think the playing field needs, please let us know.

At present, we are waiting for the result of our internal audit. By law, we are required to give you the opportunity to inspect our books. We will advise you of dates on the website and noticeboard.

We are still looking for volunteer(s) to take on the role as PROW. Please come forward, if you enjoy walking and have some spare time. From the Vicar You just might like Him! I vividly remember my younger sister saying to me 'No way, I'm not eating that!' Let's be clear about this. I hadn't offered her Chicken’s Feet from East Asia, or even Tuna Eyeballs from Japan. I had simply set before her a chicken curry. Now I'm aware that curry has been around for some time. In fact, the first curry restaurant was opened in the UK over 200 years ago.

The sadness was that before my sister had even tried curry, she was telling me how she didn't like it. I laughed, yet wondered at the same time how many of us are like that over so many things in our life? We have made up our minds before we've even tried or seen or experienced things for ourselves. 'I'm too old,' we may say or, 'It's not my thing,' ' it's not British', 'You can't teach an old dog new tricks' or simply we say 'I'm comfortable as I am thanks.'

I agree that for many people who are living in their comfort zones, it is..... extremely comfortable. On the other hand, where would we be without the explorer or the inventor or new ideas and experiences? Every day I'm grateful for instant light at just the click of a switch. I'm equally grateful for taking the opportunity to reach out and make friends. I will be eternally grateful for making the time, putting in the effort and looking at the evidence to understand and grasp the truth that God loves

me and through Jesus has adopted me into His family.

So, dare I say, what about Jesus?

Have you tried getting to know him?

I don't mean just taking someone else's opinion of Him. My dad used to say to me, 'Watch out for Vicars, they're just after your money.' In reality his understanding was based on the negative views on TV and some of the terrible abuse that has taken place. It's sad too, when our opinions are formed from unhelpful and untruthful places. However, have you actually read the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke & John) and discovered what they say about Him? If not, let me encourage you to do so, and then make a decision about him based on the evidence set before you. It could be life changing. As the Psalmist says, 'Open your mouth and taste, open your eyes and see how good God is. Blessed are you who run to him' (Psalm 34:8 The Message).

By the way, my sister eventually gave curry a try; she is now converted.

Cider Walk, Pasty & a Pint

Saturday 23rd June 2018 (time to be confirmed) The walk starts at the Village Hall and stops off at key places around the parish to sample different ciders (orange juice will also be available). It’s a wonderful walk of about 4 miles and gives you the opportunity of meeting and catching up with your fellow villagers.

Adults: £3.00 U16s: Free.

When the walk is finished, everyone can meet in the Village Hall for a pasty and a pint. £5.00 for adults and £2.50 per child.

Village Fete, B-B-Q and Disco

Keep your diaries free for our annual Village Fete where there will be traditional stalls, beer tent, games and new attractions for the whole family.

In the evening there will be a free B-B-Q and disco.

The Big Farmhouse Breakfast For myself, as organiser of this most successful event, I wish to thank all the volunteers who gave up their valuable time to help make this event possible.

To those who donated material, produce, draw prices etc. I am extremely grateful for this help to reduce our overheads which added considerably to the financial success of this venture.

With regards to the event - in excess of 150 tickets were sold and after expenses a not inconsiderable sum of £1,046.90 raised.

This money is being split equally between the Yarnscombe, St Andrews Church Restoration Fund and recreation equipment (football kicking board) for the Yarnscombe playing field.

Last but not least, I wish to thank all those who attended this event and hope you enjoyed yourselves. Be assured your donations will be well used within this parish, for the benefit of all.

Parkinsons UK – Thanks from Torridge The Torridge Branch of Parkinson's UK would like to thank everyone who supported and donated to the successful fundraising fayre on Saturday 28th April at Weare Giffard Village Hall.

We are pleased to announce we raised a record breaking £1740 on the day, proceeds of which go towards providing social events and activities, and continuing support for people with Parkinson's, Carer's and their families.

Yarnscombe Church Rescue Group News The last sentence of my May News exhorted as many of you as possible to support The Big Breakfast in the Village Hall on Sunday 13th May and you certainly did just that! A total of 150 tickets were sold, stomach bursting quantities of the classic "Full English" were consumed and a truly amazing total sum of ÂŁ1046.90 was raised to be divided equally between the Church Rescue Group and the Playing Field. A very big "Thank you" to everyone involved in the organization and particularly to Denys Cooke and Chris Brice, who decided to arrange it in the first place and then donned their aprons to cook it together with all the others who worked so hard both before and on the day helping with the table laying, cooking, serving, washing up etc. etc. You really deserved that Big Breakfast you all finally sat down to when it was all over! We are extremely grateful for the contribution raised for our funds.

I hope you all saw the flyers on the tables giving notice of the Public Meeting to be held in St Andrew's Church on Thursday 28th June from 7.00pm - 8.00pm and that as many of you as possible will try to attend. The YCRG's original Charter set out three basic objectives which are broadly as follows: i. ii. iii.

To address the maintenance defects to the structure of the Church.

To devise and implement a plan to manage the condition of the churchyard, its boundaries and car park.

To adapt existing and provide new facilities for the increased use of the Church.

The proposed meeting is for all of you as parishioners and residents of the village to have a chance to say what improvements you would like to see, whether that might be accessible loos, kitchen facilities, more usable space, better seating etc. all designed to make the Church more than just for two Sunday services a month. The Village Hall will, of course, remain as the centre of the village's social and sporting life but its popularity even now means it cannot always cope with demand and an overflow facility at peak times and the ability of the Church building itself to be used for all kinds of other cultural events such as concerts or exhibitions could be an exciting prospect. Hopefully, this will give us the opportunity to work with the Village Hall Committee to provide increased facilities and benefits for the whole of our community, whatever their interests.

The old adage "Use it or lose it" has probably never been more pertinent than now, so please come along and have your say and give us your ideas so that our lovely and historic church can continue to play an important and relevant role in our village life. If you cannot make the meeting, there is a box in the church where you can leave your written ideas or even email me at timfarr1@hotmail.co.uk.

Nature Notes Yesterday, I thought I heard a cuckoo calling but it sounded too perfect to be true. It could have been an imitation; if so, that is a pity because it has raised my hopes that this iconic bird, the herald of summer, might have decided to return to this area whence it disappeared many years ago. The cuckoo, along with the turtle dove, has suffered a disastrous decline over the past twenty years, a sad loss to the peaceful sounds of our English countryside, beset by ever-increasing traffic noise and pollution.

There is even talk of a huge drop in the rabbit population which has been afflicted by a new disease, originating in China, and very contagious. Fortunately, it doesn't seem to have arrived here. I have seen two large rabbits hopping down the drive a couple of weeks ago, and, recently, a very small bunny sitting quite still on my lawn. I know that they can be a menace to farmers' crops and to gardeners hoping to grow some vegetables, but I'm sure we would all miss the rabbit which has a part of our landscape since the Norman conquest, in fact it was the Normans who established special colonies, or warrens, in order to breed them for food. They are, also, a prey for other species for a number of other creatures such as foxes, badgers, stoats and buzzards, so let us hope that an answer can be found to this dreadful disease.

I notice that the whitethroat is back with us, flitting along the hedges, singing its little song. It is not easy to spot, as it is continually on the move, but it is easily recognisable by its white throat and a slightly raised crest when it is singing. Another bird, which has made an appearance after absence of a few years, is the willow warbler. It has a long rippling warble which is repeated and is a feature of the woods on the summer. It looks very similar to the chiff-chaff which we should also hear constantly during the warmer days.

On my journeys round the West Country, I have noticed huge swathes of dandelions on the roadside verges, turning them to gold - a beautiful sight. This lovely flower is not always appreciated by gardeners although the blossom can be turned into a very potent wine and the roots may be made into a caffeine-free coffee. The young leaves can be added to salads, although one should always bear in mind its French nickname - 'pis-en-lit'. You have been warned!

Brown Owl

Youth Group The Youth Group will be getting together on the 8th and 22nd June.

With the lighter evenings and hopefully drier weather, the children may well be able to play in the field.

All children are welcome to come along to the Youth Group whenever they can – there is no minimum or maximum age. All we ask is that any child under the age of 8 is accompanied by an adult. Volunteer helpers are always welcome as we need to ensure that there are at least three adults present each evening. Unfortunately, if there aren’t enough adults we will need to cancel the evening.

If anyone would like to come along to the Youth Group and share stories, crafts or hobbies with the children please get in touch. It’ll be great to see you there!!

Joyce Wake As many of you who know mum (Joyce Wake) will already be aware, she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s towards the end 2015. With the help of her friends and neighbours in Yarnscombe, together with regular visits from Homelife Carers mum was able to stay in her home in St Andrews Close where she was content and had many happy memories of her time there with dad. Unfortunately, towards the end of last year it became apparent that mum needed full time care and it was no longer possible for her to stay in her own home.

At that time there wasn’t a place for her at Woodland Vale in Torrington, where she had spent a happy week in respite care and had attended day care twice a week, so we had to look for an alternative. Mum moved into a care home in South Devon in November and settled well. However, in March we were told that a place was available at Woodland Vale, and after much discussion we decided to move mum back to Torrington. I am happy to say that she is now happily settled, and if anyone would like to visit her, whilst she probably won’t remember who you are, she will be content to chat anyway!

By the time you read this, mum’s house will have been sold and Mr and Mrs Fairbrother will have taken up residence in St Andrews Close – the end of a chapter for us all.

We would like to thank the friends and neighbours who supported mum after dad’s death in 2007, enabling her to stay in her home for as long as possible. Special thanks must go to Gill and Eric Palmer whose support went ‘above and beyond the call of duty’ on many occasions over the last couple of years.

Reading through these issues is very interesting and it certainly serves as a historic record of our village. They included recipes, a full children’s page and more besides. Over the next few issues, we’ll copy some interesting articles as a “History of Yarnscombe” feature in The Eagle.

Torridge Rubbish Disposal The rubbish collection arrangements will be changing quite significantly with effect from w/c 4th June 2018.

Weekly collections Recycling (Friday) • Cardboard and paper, as existing, will be disposed of in the brown and green bags (respectively) • Plastic (not black plastic though, this still needs to go in the black bags ☹) and tins, etc will be collected from the green boxes (as per current arrangements) • GLASS will need to be disposed of in the new black box which will have been supplied by the Council.

If your recycling isn’t correctly sorted out, it will not be collected.

Food waste (Friday) Food can no longer be disposed of in the green wheelie bins. A separate 23 litre food caddy will need to be used for all food waste. Again, this will be provided by the Council.

Fortnightly collections Black Bags Household waste for landfill, will now be collected every two weeks.

Garden Waste (Friday) There will be the introduction of a subscription of £35 per bin per year for garden waste. You need to register either online at www.torridge.gov.uk/gardenwaste or by calling 01237 428700 and select Option 3. You can register at any time but the fee is applicable until the end of May each year irrespective of when you apply.

Once registered, you will receive a sticker to put under the handles on the back of the wheelie bin. If your bin doesn’t have a sticker, it won’t be collected.

Hopefully by the time The Eagle is published, all households will have received their calendars in the post which will detail when the fortnightly black bag collections will start.

Defribillator Dial 999 if you suspect someone is having a cardiac arrest The Ambulance service have details of our defibrillator, the location and the code to open the cabinet and should tell you when you ring them (the defibrillator is in the entrance to the Victory Hall).

The defibrillator has to be kept in a temperature controlled cabinet to prevent deterioration. If you need to access the defibrillator the code to the cabinet is

0000  (four zeros) followed by the Tick This will unlock the cabinet. The defibrillator is automated and can be used by anyone and is self-explanatory once you open the lid to the defibrillator and turn it on - please listen carefully and follow the voice instructions.

(Do not use in wet conditions) If you do need to use the defibrillator, please let me know on 01769 560590 as I will need to replace parts and ensure it is working.

Village Notices Speed around the Village Villagers and their visitors are reminded to watch their speed when driving through the village and along the roads into and out of the Parish, especially now that the hedgerows have sprung into life.

There are villagers who walk their dogs, children are out playing and riders on their horses are being put at unnecessary risk.

The recommended speed limit within the village is 20mph and with the number of blind corners and mud/water on the roads not to mention the uneven surfaces around the parish, everyone needs to take care around Yarnscombe.

Discarded Rubbish It has been reported and witnessed this month that there was a significant amount of discarded fast food packaging, together with bottles and cigarette boxes strewn along the roadside.

While we (Sharron & Ian) have been out and about walking most evenings, it is disappointing to see so much rubbish laying in the ditches and in the hedges.

Let’s keep our village clean and tidy and our animals safe by taking all rubbish home.

Village Parking There have been a few incidents where vehicles haven’t been parked considerately around the village.

We have been asked to share this reminder to all to think about your parking habits with regard to fellow villagers, delivery vans and potential visiting emergency vehicles.

We have an easily accessible car park at the village hall if any resident (or visitors) need to park off the road for a short period of time. The car park, however, shouldn’t be used for long term abandonment of vehicles.

Dog Fouling It would appear that the issue with regard to member(s) of the public and villagers walking their dogs around the Village and not clearing up any mess left by their pets has reared its ugly head again.

Failing to clean up is anti-social and can spread diseases. If this issue continues, there will no choice but to pass information to Torridge District Council, who are authorised, once evidence has been gathered that an owner has not cleaned up any mess left by his/her dog, to be issued with a £75.00 fixed penalty notice.

Please be considerate to your friends and neighbours and clean up after your dog(s).

Flora Walk Many of you may well have seen us out for a walk most evenings recently and we are amazed at finding at least 20 different wild flowers in the hedgerows.

Now they are more than white, pink and yellow flowers, they have names!! No, not Mildred, Charlie and Augustus, but Sheep’s Sorrel, Common Vetch, Greater Stitchwort and Navelwort to name but a few.

So, when you drive through the village and wave at us on our crazy stroll out of the village, admire the colour around you.
