Yarnscombe Newsletter by the Community for the Community Note from the Editors By the time this issue of The Eagle goes to print, we should have received our new food caddy and black glass recycling box in line with Torridge District Council’s new waste collection and recycling service.

With our new Council Tax bills, we will have received notification that our rubbish collections will be changing. We have detailed all the changes on page 4, hopefully we haven’t forgotten anything important đ&#x;˜Š.

These changes will obviously take effect after the second of the two bank holidays in May (7th and 28th) where the rubbish will be collected a day late during those weeks.

Key Dates in May With the lighter evenings and (hopefully) drier days, there are a lot events taking place in the village over the coming months, the full details of which are featured throughout this issue of The Eagle.

There are still tickets available for the Big Farmhouse Breakfast on Sunday 13th May (contact info is on page 7).

Saturday 19th May sees the return of comedy MC Rob Coleman with three new acts. Tickets are available in advance through the Social Club, Richard Purchase or Sharron at ÂŁ5 each (see page 6 for details).

On Saturday 2nd June, Sian Carey will be singing for us in the Social Club. This is a free event for everyone to come along and enjoy pizza slices đ&#x;˜Š

Villager News We would like to welcome to our new neighbours at Ashlie House (1 St Andrew’s Close).

All of us in the village hope they will be very happy here in Yarnscombe and that we will meet up with them shortly at the many village events over the next few weeks.

Provisionally, the date is set for 30th May, once the date is confirmed at our next meeting, it will be advertised on the website (www.yarnscombe.org.uk) and notice board.

The Annual Parish Meeting is an opportunity for all parishioners to have their say, no matter what issue they would like to raise. Decisions cannot be made at this meeting, but it can be included and discussed at the following month’s meeting.

A few months ago, Stephen Langstone from Chulmleigh had offered to act as footpath warden for Yarnscombe.

Unfortunately, he has since realised that due to ongoing commitments, this will not be possible. At our last meeting, it was suggested that until a new warden could be found on a permanent basis, footpaths should be regarded as a collective responsibility and for parishioners to keep their eyes open and report any repairs needed (broken/ missing signs etc.) to councillors/clerk or DCC directly (ros.davies@devon.gov.uk). So, with Spring finally here, do you enjoy walking, could you spare a few hours a month and help keep our wonderful footpaths in good order? If you would like to take on the role of PROW, please let us know.

It has been reported to councillors that the sign at the entrance to the playing field has been damaged, the council has budgeted for the maintenance and repair of its assets, so should you notice any damage please let us know. Wilful damage would be disappointing to see, as the playing field is an asset for everyone to enjoy.

From your District Councillor It has been a quite few weeks regarding council work with only 14 communications from residents of our ward.

One issue which continues to be of concern is the state of our rural roads. I regularly speak with our county councillor Andrew Saywell about this. If you see any road problems, please let him know.

Torridge Rubbish Disposal As we briefly mentioned last month, the rubbish collection arrangements will be changing quite significantly with effect from w/c 4th June 2018.

Weekly collections Recycling (Friday) • Cardboard and paper, as existing, will be disposed of in the brown and green bags (respectively) • Plastic (not black plastic though, this still needs to go in the black bags ☹) and tins, etc will be collected from the green boxes (as per current arrangements) • GLASS will need to be disposed of in the new black box which will have been supplied by the Council.

Food waste (Friday) Food can no longer be disposed of in the green wheelie bins. A separate 23 litre food caddy will need to be used for all food waste. Again, this will be provided by the Council.

Fortnightly collections Black Bags Household waste for landfill, will now be collected every two weeks.

Garden Waste (Friday) There will be the introduction of a subscription of £35 per bin per year for garden waste. You need to register either online at www.torridge.gov.uk/gardenwaste or by calling 01237 428700 and select Option 3. You can register at any time but the fee is applicable until the end of May each year irrespective of when you apply.

Once registered, you will receive a sticker to put under the handles on the back of the wheelie bin. If your bin doesn’t have a sticker, it won’t be collected.

We also need to remember that there are two bank holiday Mondays in May and the rubbish will be collected a day late (ie. Wednesday and Saturday) during those weeks.

in our Christian community together, growth in numbers and growth in faith, growth in our outreach, and to be prepared to make some difficult decisions to see this happen. I believe the church is meant to thrive, not just survive.

From the Vicar Most of you have been aware that as a Mission Community we have been going through a process of forming a ‘Mission Action Plan’ for the next few years, based around the three priorities of the Exeter Diocese growing in prayer, making new disciples, and serving the people of Devon with joy.

We have been looking at the strengths and opportunities in our parishes, seeking through prayer and reading the bible to discern God’s will for us. We know that there are things we would like to do, including but also beyond our pattern of Sunday services. Some recent examples are growth in family and child friendly services, Messy Church and other activities for children and youth, informal services in village halls and community centres, an Alpha Course and other things. We recognise that starting something new will mean doing less of other things. Part of the process was for the leadership to propose a new service pattern with fewer services on a Sunday, encouraging all of us to support what is going on in our neighbouring parishes.

The proposals have been discussed in the church annual meetings over the last month, and unsurprisingly reactions have been mixed. I personally recognise that this challenging process has not been helped by my own personal situation and so I have not done as good a job of overseeing this in my role as Team Rector as was needed.

Having discussed this I, together with Paul Bysouth have decided that we will put implementation of a new rota on hold during my Sabbatical (which is starting 17th May ending beginning of September) and will adjust the current one where needed due to our resources. I take responsibility for any frustration coming from this, and really appreciate the time, effort and prayer that many have put into this process so far. Thank you.

For 2000 years gathering imperfect human beings, different in opinion, gifting, vision, and many other ways, has been God’s way of working in the world that Jesus died to save. And Jesus not only died. He is risen again!

And there is God’s power to bring something amazing out of the terrible event of the cross. The good news of Jesus has transformed countless live for 2000 years and continues to do so today.

And he can do that with us - when we look to him, when we seek first his kingdom, seek to love one another as we have been loved and to serve him above all else.

Yarnscombe Church Rescue Group News Most importantly, we have now heard from the Parochial Church Council that they have created the necessary Restricted Fund within their accounts for the upkeep and improvement of St Andrew's Church into which all monies raised, from whatever initiatives, will now be placed. In addition, they have also placed a substantial portion of funds they already hold into a new Designated Fund for the same purposes, which will sit alongside the Restricted Fund, and which should be sufficient to enable us to go ahead and instruct builders to start the work so badly needed.

In this respect we have already received one tender and are waiting for the second. On receipt of that and with the Architect's advice we will be able to give the go-ahead to one of them for the work to start.

I hope that as many of you as possible will support the Big Breakfast in the Village Hall on Sunday 13th May from which the organisers have kindly agreed to donate half the profits to the Restricted Fund. It all helps!

Use It or Lose It There was a time when Yarnscombe had its own village school – there are still many living in the village who attended it! That building is now a well-loved home and no longer used for the community. At one time the village boasted a pub and post office – the Post Mistress still lives here!

We moved to Yarnscombe in 2000; into The Old Chapel – a fabulous building where the light shines through the stained glass windows and we often hear reminiscences of chapel weddings and other well-attended services. However, times change, the congregation dwindled and The United Methodist Church was no longer used; so it became redundant and another use found – as a home, luckily for us, but not so for those who lost their place of worship.

When we moved here it was possible to collect fresh milk from the farm and there was a milkman who delivered regularly during the week. Ironically, the number of milkmen delivering in London is rapidly increasing! People are becoming more aware of the environment and the use of plastic bottles, recognising it is beneficial to think ‘green’ and use recyclable glass bottles instead.

As I write this, last Sunday was Palm Sunday. I go to church every now and then. There was a congregation of 4, including the organist. The church was cold and looked unloved as being Lent there were no flowers, and the walls definitely need some attention. However, the service was meaningful. There was no sign of the Old Prayer Book – much of which I find difficult

to come to terms with - there was a modern touch to the service which I appreciated.

Easter Sunday - a congregation of 6 including the organist. The church was bright with flowers, looked loved (was still cold!), the service was poignant and lively; the language was relevant and non-believers were invited to be blessed if they so wished. A beautiful Easter scene had been made by Toryn, Barnaby and Monty.

Unfortunately, the service was too late in the evening for children to attend, such a shame that so much thought and work should be appreciated by so few.

The church was absolutely bursting for the Christmas Carol Service. People arrived early to secure a good seat! Children wandered about in awe of the candles, lights and the sweets delivered after the sermon! There was banter and excitement.

Of the five Sundays in April there was only one service in St. Andrew’s Church!

Tim Farr keeps us up to date regarding Yarnscombe Church Rescue Group with regular information in The Eagle. Clearly the church is in poor repair and there are plans to use the church for events other than religious. There can be no doubt that the stunning Flower Festival and musical concerts are proof that St. Andrew’s Church still has a very important part to play in village life.

Surely, it is important that we support the Church Rescue Group if we do not wish to lose another village asset.

Youth Group A huge thank you for everyone who came along to the Easter Egg hunt at Gwerilyn on the 1st April. We did have to make sure the Easter Bunny didn’t play any tricks on the 18 children who came along. Even the weather behaved!!

The Youth Group will be getting together on 11th and 25th May for the usual fun and games.

As the weather “seems” to be getting better and the evenings are lighter, there will be the chance for the children to play in the field before the tuck shop opens. Obviously, this is weather dependent!!

All children are welcome to come along to the Youth Group whenever they can – there is no minimum or maximum age. All we ask is that any child under the age of 8 is accompanied by an adult. Volunteer helpers are always welcome as we need to ensure that there are at least three adults present each evening.

If anyone would like to come along to the Youth Group and share stories, crafts or hobbies with the children please get in touch.

Nature Notes At last, we have a hint of Summer, or even Spring! This March was the wettest for many years, and April has not been much better, with a lot of cold, wet days. However, it seems to have encouraged the growth of primroses which are everywhere, lighting up the banks and ditches. They are one of my favourite flowers, appearing in time for Easter and blooming for a long time afterwards. Huge numbers used to be picked and sent to the markets in Birmingham and London, without any apparent detriment to the plants which were always left with enough flowers to set seed. Where woodland has been cleared, they are often the first flowers to colonise the empty space. There are also pink varieties which I have noticed flourishing in certain places, year after year.

Another flower which signifies the arrival of Spring is the Lesser Celandine which scatters its bright, shining golden blooms wherever the soil has been disturbed or where it has been allowed to spread. The flowers shut up their petals when the weather is bad and open up when it improves and the sun comes out.

someone has had better luck. I hope it has survived and that the warmer weather brings out the flies and other insects on which Swallows feed. We may not like flies but they have their place in nature even if it is only to provide a snack for another creature.!

There are two birds whose songs are very similar and I'm certain that I heard one of them on one of the fine, sunny days recently. I can't swear which one it was, but my guess is that it was the Blackcap Warbler which, in the past, I have seen in my garden - with some difficulty because it never stays still but flies from one tree to another. The male Blackcap, as its name suggests, has a black cap on its head and should not be confused with the Marsh Tit which is a smaller, dumpier bird. What is the other possible songster? It is the Garden Warbler which is a rather grey little bird not easy to see, but reputedly not found as often in Devon as it used to be. Anyway, I was very pleased to hear the song because it is yet another sign that Summer is on its way.

Defribillator Dial 999 if you suspect someone is having a cardiac arrest The Ambulance service have details of our defibrillator, the location and the code to open the cabinet and should tell you when you ring them (the defibrillator is in the entrance to the Victory Hall).

The defibrillator has to be kept in a temperature controlled cabinet to prevent deterioration. If you need to access the defibrillator the code to the cabinet is

This will unlock the cabinet. The defibrillator is automated and can be used by anyone and is self-explanatory once you open the lid to the defibrillator and turn it on - please listen carefully and follow the voice instructions.
