We’ll keep your issue “open” for another month and at that time we will need to remove your address from the list. Unfortunately, the cost of producing The Eagle isn’t free and all costs need to be covered.

Some parishoners have been very generous as usual with their donations, for which we thank you. We are very grateful to those of you who have given us very positive feedback – “The Eagle is a wonderful community read. We are so lucky to have such dedicated editors” is one lovely comment received on the back of the envelope.

Can we take this opportunity to say a big “Hello” to our new residents to the village who have moved into Symondsdean and Northchurch Cottage.

We hope you’ll be very happy here in Yarnscombe.

Just as we go to print, the “Beast from the East” is about to hit the UK. Extreme cold winds and weather will be arriving from Russia, bringing daytime temperatures of 0°C but with the wind chill it could feel like -11°C. Take care while you’re out and about and keep an eye on friends and neighbours. It’s gonna be COLD!

He has also spoken to Paul Coles (BT Manager of South West), trying to resolve ongoing issues with connection to fibre optics broadband on High Bickington exchange.

Regarding grants, in the next financial year Cllr. Morrish has £2000 available to share between Yarnscombe and St.Giles.

At the February meeting, we are hoping to have some concrete ideas for our grant application. In this respect, we very much depend on ideas and input of parishioners.

Any suggestions, can be put forward to any councillor, clerk or by coming to any of our meetings.

As part of ongoing training, Cllr. Pengilley will soon attend a course in General Data Protection Regulations. As a local government authority, we have to comply with all relevant legislation and we are very grateful to Cllr.

Pengilley for helping us to do so. Although, there is only one meeting a month, a lot of work and preparation goes into every meeting.

Easter Bingo Friday 23rd March

The Easter Bingo is always very popular, with extra meat prizes, bigger money prizes.

Old £10 notes A note for all village organisations and clubs.

The 1st March is the last date that some shops can stop accepting the old paper £10 notes. The banks will still accept the old notes for a while after this date.

Please bear this mind when taking entry fees in the weeks to come.

From your District Councillor At last it looks like spring is on it's way. It has been a very difficult time for those who work on the land, let’s hope things improve very soon. February means that it's time to set the council tax for the forth coming year. It will be up to all 36 members to decide but I feel it should be a 0% freeze as TDC is in good financial state, so why put more pressure on our public to pay more.

It is with great sadness that one of my fellow councillors passed away recently. Cllr Sam Robinson represented his ward with passion and dignity at all times. He will be greatly missed.

My mail bag has been quite busy this month with 55 emails, 8 letters and lots of phone calls. The topics covered in these communications including, smells from Deepmoor tip, council tax, pot holes and various planning issues.

From the Vicar It's time for change!

You've probably already heard the news that our wonderful, hard-working, compassionate Rector, Mike Clark, is soon to take a sabbatical (that's a time away to study, to be renewed, refreshed) after many years in full time ministry.

In preparation for that time away, The Two Rivers Mission Community (that's all 11 Parishes and Churches) have been preparing a draft mission action plan, with the Archdeacon of Barnstaple. This is to find the best ways of ministering during Mike's sabbatical and for the future in the hope that we will also reach a new generation while caring for those who have remained faithful.

There will be a meeting on March 5th @ 7:15 at St. Giles village Hall, with the Archdeacon, to communicate the way forward. We would love to see you there.

We have to face change in the Church. It's very easy, simply to resist change.

Change can be uncomfortable, or we fear it because it seems a threat, or to avoid it because we think we can't cope.

I'm sure you have heard the story about a visitor being shown round a country church by the Church warden., "I've been church warden here for over 25 years," he said proudly. "That's a long time," said the visitor. "You must have seen a lot of changes?"

"You're right," said the Church warden, "And I've resisted every one of them!"

In fact, if we can approach change in the right way (rather than hiding from it or resisting it), it can be a way of growing as Christians. When we come across something new we're not sure about, we need to ask - "IS IT BAD - OR ONLY NEW?" SHOULD I OPPOSE IT - OR GIVE MYSELF TIME TO GET USED TO IT?" "IS THE ISSUE A MATTER OF TRUTH - OR ONLY A MATTER OF TASTE?" Asking these questions of God as well as of ourselves will help us to keep our bearings in a time when the world is changing rapidly, and the church is too.

In what can seem bewildering, dizzying change, the one fixed point to hang on to, and steer by, is God Himself. "I THE LORD DO NOT CHANGE" He says (Malachi 3:6.) To keep us open to the great changes He Himself brings about, He also says, "I AM MAKING EVERYTHING NEW,"(Revelation 21:51). Needless to say, we all need to be praying for each other during such a time - and let's not forget to pray for Mike and his family during their time away.

The fourth and fifth rounds have been and gone since the last write-up and we continue to have incredibly close contests. However, The Outsiders have opened a gap at the top of the table with only one round to play; what a different story it might have been had The Udders taken part in October’s quiz.

No matter what the weather, we have a nucleus of teams who turn up and tax their brains every month.

Thank you to all those people.

2018 RSPB Garden Bird Watch Well, this year’s birdwatch was a wash out ☹, no thanks to the constant deluge of rain we’ve been “enjoying” since September!! If I was a bird, I wouldn’t want to “go out in that weather” even if the food was particularly yummy.

The RSPB’s event took place at the end of January – 45 soggy birds (down from 67 two years ago) visited the garden at Heather Bank during an hour, all the usual regulars including starlings, house sparrows, blackbird, blue tits.

There were no special visitors this year.

Hopefully, next year will see better weather for the count!

Nature Notes I have a (?) mouse in my bathroom. I don't know what species it belongs to, because I haven't actually seen it, but I know that it likes my shaving soap and that it has torn up some of the toilet roll, presumably for bedding. I intend to trap it alive to find out whether it is a house mouse, as I suspect it is, or just possibly a wood mouse which I have caught previously, a few years ago. It could be the latter because I have found, in a spare bedroom, a small cache of acorns hidden under a rug, which is the sort of behaviour typical of their species. If I catch the visitor, I shall release it some distance away from my house, possibly in a wood or, maybe (a mischievous thought), in another village where it might be able to find lodgings!

A small flock of starlings can usually be found, feeding in the field opposite my house. Occasionally they are joined by a flock of fieldfares and redwings, thrush-like birds which migrate from Europe in the winter to avoid the harsh weather and frozen earth.

Although they search for grubs and insects in the same area, they don't intermingle and, when the starlings decide to move, they do so as one flock without disturbing their fellow feeders. Starling numbers have fallen drastically in the last twenty years but, in winter, our native birds are joined by huge numbers from the continent, resulting in the huge "murmurations" of starlings seen in places like the Somerset levels and some of our cities.

Mice and voles are active throughout the winter and over half manage to survive, by growing thicker coats and by adopting a more vegetarian diet. In very cold conditions, they get together to share body heat.

Shrews, on the other hand, are solitary animals, continually on the move, hunting for small invertebrates. In order to conserve energy, in the winter, their skeleton reduces in size and their overall weight and size drops by up to 20%. If they manage to survive, they usually die in the following autumn, after breeding.

Apart from Lenten lilies which are starting to brighten our hedges and woods, look for the Blackthorn which blooms usually when we get a nasty cold snap before the end of winter. It is not as common here as up country where the hedges are often white with blossom. It makes an impenetrable hedge and the wood makes marvellous walking sticks. But, above all, its fruits are the source of that lovely winter warmer - Sloe Gin. Cheers!

Yarnscombe Church Rescue Group News Since the last edition of ‘The Eagle’ the Group has been busy arranging for the necessary work to go forward, just as soon as winter’s grip loosens slightly…..

Our first priority is to clear the backlog of outstanding maintenance items on the structure of the building.

This is unglamorous, but necessary, work which, apart from maintaining the value of the asset, will also demonstrate that the Yarnscombe Community is a responsible custodian of its church building.

The Schedule of Works for this is being composed as we go to print. It is expected that there will be sufficient money already held in the Restricted Fund that has been set up to provide for this work, so it will not be necessary to raise any new funds to clear this backlog.

Once the backlog has been cleared then the real business of the YCRG can begin in earnest. The aim is to provide facilities within the church that will, as well as holding Services on a Sunday, also equip it for a wider range of new activities of a mainly cultural nature.

But just to make sure that everyone has a chance to speak on this matter, we are also going to hold a Village Meeting in the church at 7.30 on Thursday 28th June. This will be an opportunity for anyone who lives in Yarnscombe to come along to the church, see the proposed plans and contribute ideas to them.

Once we have everyone’s contributions, we can finalise the plans and then set about turning them into reality. This will inevitably need some money beyond what we already have, so we will need to run some events to raise some of this and make applications for grants to cover the rest.

In order to ‘prime the pump’ for this, the YCRG will be ‘leading’ some additional activities during the course of 2018, so here are some dates for your diary: •

There are some courses that members of the Group are attending, to ensure that we have all the information that we need to make a success of this.

On 19 January, I attended a one-day seminar at Exeter Cathedral entitled “Managing Church Building Projects”, which was very useful and informative.

On 1 Mar Tim Harris will be attending another seminar entitled “Building for Success”.

So, the group certainly feels in reasonable shape for the forthcoming project!

This is where you all come in!

The Group has devised an outline plan, but we would very much like input from the whole village to ensure that we will be fitting the church out in the way that

We understand that a Village ‘Big Breakfast’ is already being planned for Sunday 13th May – more details will be available soon and we are absolutely delighted to be named as one of the beneficiaries of this popular event.

We will be holding our Public Stakeholder Engagement Meeting on Thursday 28th Jun. We are investigating a summer evening classical music concert, to be held in the church in July or August.

We will be leading on the arrangements for the Yarnscombe Candlelit Christmas Carol Service, to be held at 6.30pm on Sunday 23 December.

So, all in all, it is going to be an exciting and busy year ahead! I look forward to keeping you all informed of the progress.

The North Devon Hedgehog Rescue group is holding their annual Cream Tea Day (sometime in July – date to be confirmed) and are asking for hedgehog themed items to sell. Can you help?

Defribillator Dial 999 if you suspect someone is having a cardiac arrest The Ambulance service have details of our defibrillator, the location and the code to open the cabinet and should tell you when you ring them (the defibrillator is in the entrance to the Victory Hall).

The defibrillator has to be kept in a temperature controlled cabinet to prevent deterioration. If you need to access the defibrillator the code to the cabinet is

The defibrillator is automated and can be used by anyone and is selfexplanatory once you open the lid to the defibrillator and turn it on please listen carefully and follow the voice instructions. Annual Subscriptions The Eagle is now in its 35th year of production and printing prices have increased steadily over the years, but the donations haven’t! Like last year we are asking all households for a contribution of at least £3.00 to cover the production and printing costs of The Eagle.

A small brown envelope was attached to the front of the last issue of The Eagle which should be delivered back with your contribution enclosed to either of the editors in the Village or given to Barry, the postman who is willing to pick up any from “out of the village” locations. If you need another envelope, let us know.

If we don’t receive your contribution over the next couple of months we will assume that you no longer wish to receive a copy of The Eagle.

We’d also like your feedback and comments about the contents of The Eagle over the last twelve months. Ideas of what to include would be gratefully received.
