The Eagle Note from the Editors According to reports, August and December are the wettest months of the year. Well, “they� certainly weren’t wrong – it seems to have been raining since the children broke up from school. We hope the Summer holidays haven’t been spoilt too much!

Over the last couple of months, the parish has enjoyed two weekends of entertainment, music and community events. We’re sure that everyone will join us in thanking the Organising Group for putting together a varied few days for us all. See page 10 for a detailed write up of the second weekend.

Another big thank you to Sharon and John of the “Yarnscombe Yardiesâ€? who hosted the latest quiz night. ÂŁ100 was raised on the night and all proceeds were donated to the Over and Above charity.

If you enjoyed the quiz night and have missed the league – well it’s making a return.

The focus of the parish is now on scarecrows, the cider walk and barbecue. If you haven’t registered with Lesley yet, you need to do so quickly! All creations need to be put up in, around and on your houses and gardens over the bank holiday weekend for photos to be taken during the following week. Her email address is noted on page 4.

We look forward to seeing you all on Saturday 2nd September for the walk starting at 4:30pm from the Village Hall with the barbecue starting at around 7pm.

From your District Councillor Well, that was summer 2017?

Interestingly many businesses in Torridge are telling me that this year has been the best they have had for many years. With that in mind, I am delighted to tell you all about the Torridge Dragon's Den. Using money which was given to TDC over 18 years ago to spend on the economy within the district.

We will be organising an opportunity to see the council invest in some of our strengthening new and forward thinking businesses. This idea is subject to members approval and scrutiny so I hope to be able tell you more next month.

Yarnscombe Social Club

Needs you!

Yarnscombe has an amazing resource in the Village Hall and the Social Club – both of which have benefitted from extensive refurbishment works recently, such as new windows for the whole building, curtains and blinds, more economical heating and now it’s being given a facelift being decorated inside and out.

It’s a shame these benefits are being enjoyed by just a few people in the parish. Many village clubs use the Hall during the week (see page 15 for the Diary of events). The Social Club is also open on Saturday and Monday evenings from 8:00pm and is open to everyone.

The question is “What do you want from Social Club?”. Is there anything you’d like to see at the“Club” occasionally or regularly? What type of events?

All suggestions are welcome and will be considered.

Scarecrow Festival 2017

August Bank Holiday 26th-28th August 2017 It’s great to see so many scarecrows around the village. Well done everyone.

Cider Walk & BBQ

Saturday 2nd September 4:30pm The walk starts at the Village Hall and stops off at three key places the parish to sample three different ciders (orange juice will also be available). It’s a wonderful walk of about 4 miles and gives you the opportunity of meeting and catching up with your fellow villagers. £5.00 per adult. £2.00 per child (between 8yrs and 14yrs) Free for under 8yrs.

When the walk is finished, everyone can meet in the Village Hall for a BBQ and to look at the photographs of all the scarecrows in the parish.

Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival

Are you interested in a coach trip to Bridgwater to see this popular Carnival?

A coach is being organised for Saturday 4th November, leaving Yarnscombe Village Hall car park at around 3:30pm in time for the parade to start at 7pm.

Notes from the Parish Council Last month we met up with a representative of Torridge District Council who came to see what we had purchased with the grant money received last year. So far, we have purchased a lawnmower, strimmer, picnic table with bench, play shelter, tool shed as well as chippings and wooden edging.

There are grant monies available in the current financial year, so decisions if and how much we should apply for, will be made at the next meetings. Your input is also always welcome!

At the July meeting, we had our first opportunity to meet our new County Councillor, Andrew Saywell. He promised to attend as many meetings as possible and explained that he could offer Yarnscombe PC grants in the region of ÂŁ500.

Councillor Morrish, who also attended the meeting, promised to look into problems experienced by users of Lloyds mobile bank in Torrington. He will report back and we will keep you up-to-date.

He explained that it is highly likely that the hardware shop in Torrington will install 24hour ATM that can be accessed from the street.

Yarnscombe PC intends to register for the Local Council Foundation Award, certain criteria needs to be fulfilled and at present we are working hard to compile the relevant documents and ensure that all our councillors have received adequate training.

Enchanced Recycling Collections From 1st September 2017 Torridge District Council are extending the range of plastic materials they will pick up in their weekly recycling collections to include nearly all types of plastics (with the only exception being black plastic).

Residents will now be able to put the following items into their green boxes - clear food trays, plastic bottles, margarine tubs, and yogurt pots, etc.

Letter from the Vicar Although I am writing just two weeks into the school summer holiday I saw a combine in a field in Somerset a few days ago starting to bring in the harvest. All our communities will be celebrating with harvest festivals this month or next when we give thanks to God and remember that it is all because of him that we have anything at all.

It is important that we understand that Belinda's role will look different to that of previous curates as she is continuing in her job and serving in the church as a self-supporting minister. We would love as many as possible to join us at the cathedral that morning. Hopefully lifts can be shared locally and a large number of us will be there to cheer her on!

There will be a celebratory cream tea in Tawstock church at 3.30pm and that evening Belinda will be telling part of her story at Encounter- 7pm in High Bickington Community Centre.

In July members from every church in our Mission Community met together to read from the Bible, think, talk and pray about what God is calling his church to in the next 'season'. Some of the Bible passages we looked at used images from agriculture (and the growth that we see and celebrate) to help us understand better. Take a look, for example at John 15:1-4, Matthew 13:31-32, Matthew 37-38.

What do you think that God is saying to us through this? Please pray for the next Mission Community Meeting on 11th September as we continue to look to God to guide us.

Harvest Supper and Auction The annual Harvest Supper and Auction, with proceeds split between St Andrew's Church and a local charity, will take place in the Victory Hall at 7pm on Tuesday 3rd October.

Tickets, price £8 for adults and £4 for children, are now available from Grahame Thomas (560487) or Richard Pengilley (560783).

There will also be an opportunity to give thanks for what we hope will have been a successful harvest at the church Harvest Festival service on Sunday 1st October at 6.30pm. All are welcome.

Yarnscombe Church Rescue Group In August, we completed our first repair task!

On 16 Aug, local church carpenter Derek Herniman scaled the spiral staircase to the top of the tower with all his carpenters’ tools and returned to ground level a couple of hours later - triumphant!

He has repaired and re-shaped the leaking door so that it now closes correctly and securely and will no longer let in rainwater. He also changed the hinges of the door for high quality galvanised replacements, so that the door can’t “drop” on its hinges again, (it was probably this that was the cause of the original problem). He has also re-sealed the gap between the outside of the oak door frame and the surrounding stonework, to make the weatherproofing of the area complete.

All the work has been done to the highest possible standard, with the best quality materials. We are very grateful to Derek for the care he has taken and expect that this work will last for many years to come.

We can now turn the Group’s attention to the next task, which is that of turning the Architect’s 2016 Report into a “Schedule of Works” that can be used to support applications. This will be a long and tricky task to establish exactly what needs to be done, in which order, and at what cost.

We do hope that everyone who attended the recent concerts in the church on Fri 11 and Sun 13 Aug, had the opportunity to view the large information boards showing the work needed, which were displayed near the refreshment bar. We will move these boards around to various places in the village from time to time, so that as many people as possible can have the chance to see them.

There won’t be another bulletin from the YCRG until the November edition of “The Eagle”, but, by then, we hope to have some very exciting news……

The Return Of The Quiz League!

It’s time to play for The Pig! Our fabulous quiz league trophy is up for grabs once more! From October through to March there will be one quiz per month (dates below), each on a Saturday night, to help you pass those cold winter months in the convivial atmosphere of the newly decorated village social club. You don’t have to turn up to every one as there is a prize for each of the six, but we all know it’s the taking part that counts! There’ll be a reminder in October’s Eagle with one or two extra bits of information. In the meantime, get your teams together and do the difficult bit – find a team name; and make a note of the dates: 21st October 2017 18th November 2017 16th December 2017 27th January 2018 17th February 2018 17th March 2018

Nature Notes Families of young swallows are beginning to gather together in preparation for their long migration to sub-Saharan Africa. In poor weather, they fly low over the fields, feeding on flies and other insects, while, on fine, sunny days they fly high to find their food. Insects contain a large proportion of fat and protein and provide ideal food for the swallows' long journey.

They will stop many times to 'refuel ' and their route will be over the shortest possible seacrossing, such as the Straits of Gibraltar. They may, occasionally, hitch a lift on board a suitable ship or ferry which is going in the right direction!

Many of our small birds are summer visitors which migrate to warmer climates during the winter. Sadly, the illegal practice of catching these birds is widespread in Mediterranean countries, such as Cyprus and Malta, where they are processed into local delicacies, such as patès. So, if you should visit one of these places make sure you know what you are eating - it is too late after the event. In this country, the days of eating skylarks and blackbirds are past, fortunately, (although maybe rook-pie is still enjoyed in some remote rural parts), so how can the decline of many bird species be explained? It is, in part, owing to illegal hunting abroad, as I have mentioned, but also to the disappearance of certain habitats in this country, or the changes in land use, for example the autumn sowing of cereal crops, rather than spring sowing.

We can, of course, help our birds by providing food for them, especially in the winter, but also making sure there are places where they can shelter and nest. Nest boxes are one obvious answer but good thick hedges, old walls with creepers or ivy, and some neglected undergrowth (which warblers prefer) are other solutions.

On fine evenings I have noticed bats flying up and down the hedges hunting for moths and other insects. It is very difficult to identify which species they are, but most probably, they are likely to be common pipistrelles which are very small and widespread throughout the British Isles. They can squeeze into tiny spaces in buildings and roost in quite large numbers in winter, when they hibernate. They are strictly protected so should not be disturbed if found in your loft. Someone in your local council will know how to deal with them - but I have heard that burning incense is a good deterrent!

Youth Group It was great to see so many children (and adults) having fun at the Sciencedipity workshop. We all had a great time sifting through the forensic evidence of the crime scene, taking fingerprints, testing for chemical reactions, blood typing and solving the puzzle of the height of the criminal.

Thank you to everyone who has supported the Youth Group’s various stalls over the past year, this enabled us to refund all the children their £10 booking fees for this workshop.

The next Youth Group meeting shall be on 15th September. Looking forward to seeing you there.

What A Second Weekend!!

The second Yarnscombe weekend was, by popular acclaim, a great success and provided 3 more events which everyone could (if they wanted to) access and enjoy. The fabulous Jim Jones (Small Town Jones) saw well over 50 pack into the church to hear a stunning concert of popular local music, written and performed by Jim, and accompanied by Dave, in a venue with magical acoustic qualities.

Over 80 breakfasts were served at the Big Village Brunch on the Sunday morning and the chatter, mixing and general merriment was a pleasure to see. The finale of the whole two weekends gave us the magnificent Rakes Adrift performing folk, blues and their own songs in a Celtic, foot tapping, and handclapping series of musical medley. So good were they that the 60 odd who came to the church to see them, insisted on two encores – apparently a first!

It seems some are far more concerned about how much money was raised, and where it has gone, than how much enjoyment has been had by so many in our community. Last year (2016) the whole weekend lost £580 which the Social Club so generously pre-committed to cover. Having made the same commitment this year, it is great to be able to say we can now pay back the loss and see a very small surplus in addition. Plus, we are passing as a restrictive donation £264 to the church for use on the building restoration project. A lot of hard work but a lot of benefit for the village as well.

So the veil comes down on this year’s activities. The range and spread of what we have achieved in a small community is fantastic and a very big thank you to everyone who supported any of the events. You have been very generous in your praise and thanks.

To everyone who helped in whatever way, small or large, a massive thank you from everyone who took even one ounce of enjoyment from what you helped put on. To those who don’t live in our village, such as “Sparky” who does our brilliant graphics for posters and leaflets, to our sponsors who gave so generously and the suppliers who often

It appears that goal has been achieved from the comments on Facebook and the comments made by so many. So until next year…….well just wait and see, but in the interim there are so many things which will be going on which need and deserve our support! As one lady from Barnstaple said; “I wished I lived in Yarnscombe. It has so much going on and is such a great community”.

Gardener’s Diary SEPTEMBER – Late summer progresses into autumn September is generally a cooler, gustier month than August and the days are noticeably shorter. While there's not as much to do in the ornamental garden at this time of the year, if you have a fruit or vegetable patch, you'll be busy reaping the rewards of harvest. It's also time to get out and start planting spring-flowering bulbs for next year and you can collect seeds for next summer's colour too. Make the most of the remaining warmth while you can! (article used from the RHS website: www.rhs.org.uk) • Divide herbaceous perennials • Pick autumn raspberries • Collect and sow seed from perennials and hardy annuals • Dig up remaining potatoes before slug damage spoils them • Net ponds before leaf fall gets underway • Keep up with watering of new plants, using rain or grey water if possible • Start to reduce the frequency of houseplant watering • Clean out cold frames and greenhouses so that they are ready for use in the autumn • Cover leafy vegetable crops with bird-proof netting • Plant spring flowering bulbs

The Facebook page has nearly 150 followers where news is shared quickly. It’s a good way to pass on information from the village or others in the locality.
