The Eagle Note from the Editors The first Village Weekend proved to be a huge success. We hope all those of you who took part in or supported the events during the weekend had a thoroughly enjoyable time. The weather was extremely kind especially for the fete on Saturday as well as the pet service and dog show on Sunday.

The focus is now on the second weekend with Small Town Jones and Rakes Adrift performing in the Church together with the brunch on the Sunday morning. Tickets can be bought on the door for the evening music entertainment. ***The brunch is TICKETS ONLY, so if you wish to partake, please get your tickets in advance*** đ&#x;˜Š Tickets are available via Sue/Tim Harris on yvw.tickets@gmail.com or 07542 813882. August in the Village is a busy time too.

We have the second village th th th weekend (11 & 13 ), the quiz night (19 ), Scarecrow Festival (bank holiday weekend) culminating in the cider walk and BBQ (ok, this event is technically in September, but it’s worth a mention!!)

We are very sad to learn of the passing of Beryl Sellwood’s partner, Michael following a long illness. Many of you may remember him through his connections with the Social Club in years gone by.

Our best wishes and condolences are with Beryl and the family at this time.

From your District Councillor In my new role at Torridge, lead member for economy, I am spending a lot of time with many of our business in the district. Despite big increases in business rates by the Valuation Office, many are reporting as doing reasonably well and looking forward to expanding and investing.

At a recent council meeting we agreed to invest in extra car parks in Westward Ho! This comes after listening to many companies in the area who have made it very clear that it is needed.

Only 21 emails/letters/telephone calls this month on issues from dog mess to electric chargers for cars within the district.

Scarecrow Festival 2017

August Bank Holiday 26th-28th August 2017 This month sees the return of the Village Scarecrows.

For those of you who are relatively new to the village - for the last 4 years households have been encouraged to make and display scarecrows in their gardens (or attached to their homes!) – just for fun. It adds a lot of colour and smiles for everyone in the village especially at the end of the long summer holidays.

This year there isn’t a theme – so you’re free to make anything you like đ&#x;˜Š. All scarecrows need to be completed by the August bank holiday weekend. If you like the village Facebook page, you’ll see pictures of the last two years if you need any inspiration. The children (under 12) of the family are encouraged to make a scarecrow too. Just let us know.

Cider Walk & BBQ

Saturday 2nd September The walk starts at the Village Hall and stops off at three key places the parish to sample three different ciders (orange juice will also be available). It’s a wonderful walk of about 4 miles and gives you the opportunity of meeting and catching up with your fellow villagers. £5.00 per adult. £2.00 per child (between 8yrs and 14yrs) Free for under 8yrs.

When the walk is finished, everyone can meet in the Village Hall for a BBQ and to look at the photographs of all the scarecrows in the parish.

Notes from the Parish Council At our annual parish council meeting in May, Cllr. Brice and Cllr. Martin were re-elected as chair and vice-chair respectively. Annual accounts had been signed off by internal auditor and have now been sent off to external auditor.

The final reports will be published on website.

A big “thank you” to Peter Jeffery who assisted in putting up new goal posts in the playing field, giving his labour for free. From now on, the council has also contracted him to strim the field for two hours per month. Grant money provided by Cllr. Morrish has been used to purchase a picnic bench, brushcutter tool shed and lawnmower. Our application to “Grantscape” has unfortunately not been successful, although we did fulfil all criteria, demand outstripped availability of grant money. We are hopeful, that our district and county councillors will be able to step in.

Clerk recently successfully completed her CiLCA qualification (Certificate in Local Council administration), which means that the council can now move forward with its registration to gain quality council status.

We are still looking for volunteer(s) to take on the role as footpath warden, a rewarding and essential role to ensure that we all can enjoy our surrounding footpaths for many years to come. Cream Teas St Andrew's Church Cream Teas – 25th June 2017 We are very pleased to be able to report that the Cream Teas event raised a total of £331. This is an excellent result and compares well with last year's total of £182. It will be very helpful in maintaining the church's service to the community. We hope that all who attended enjoyed the event.

Our sincere thanks to Chris and Janet Brice for their hospitality and to all who supplied food and drink, baked cakes and scones, served, or helped in any other way.

Letter from the Vicar Let's keep Growing They say that Life is about growth. Trees grow, plants grow, fruits grow. If things don't grow we say they stagnate or die. Well, from the time we're born we grow don't we. Therefore, we are expected to grow in our bodies; we get taller, bigger, stronger. Our hair grows (maybe we lose a bit when we get older). Our nails grow and our ears - in fact did you know that our ears continue to grow throughout our entire life! We grow too in our relationships and love.

We grow in our minds and understanding (hopefully we grow wiser). I may have begun to read with 'Janet and John' and the very first word that I spelt may have been 'Cat' but I have grown in my spelling and reading of many things since. And, like you, I've continued to grow in my understanding of people and the world around me, through observing, discussing, listening, travelling, exploring etc.

And yet there is another kind of growth that has impacted my life and the lives of many around our world. I'm speaking of growing spiritually, having discovered a God who loves us and wants us to grow in our knowledge and love of him, and others too (and this never stops while we live).

That's why our Two Rivers Mission Community is focusing on growth within our communities and individual lives. Growth, not just in numbers (though that's one of the signs we are growing) but growth within our life of prayer, gaining a greater confidence to step out and pray for others. Growth in our worship, discovering new ways of worshipping our God and not being afraid to let go of something. Growth through our daily reading of God's word so that our lives are more in step with God's Holy Spirit and His direction for our lives. Growth through our fellowship as we meet together. Growth in serving one another, wanting the best for others and being willingness to help and stand alongside. And this Spiritual growth should be characterized with a sense of joy. In fact, the Bible, when speaking of the fruits of the Spirit that we should be growing in our lives, (and any fruit is growth) describes them as, "Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and selfcontrol." Are those the fruits in your life?

So, as everything else is growing around us - let's grow closer to God, to each other and may our fruitfulness be for the benefit of others and the glory of God. Blessings,

Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival

A coach is being organised for Saturday 4th November, leaving Yarnscombe Village Hall car park at around 3:30pm in time for the parade to start at 7pm.

And the sun came out as we played The dust has settled on the first Yarnscombe weekend of 2017 and what a success it was. However, it would not have been possible without a dedicated team determined to make it a success for all those in our community (near and slightly further away) who wanted to join in with all the fun. The consensus was that we started with a brilliant comedy night sponsored by Country Profile. 4 comedians with a tremendously funny headliner – Steve Day – kept tears rolling down faces all evening. The day of the fete, horticultural show and five a side football tournament (which attracted over 70 players from across North Devon) saw the playing field buzzing with activity from early morning. The day started and finished with the sun shining; we saw a display of tractors from the 1950’s to a brand new John Deer lining the field and we had many friends and families on the field enjoying a tradition afternoon of fun and frolics, many sitting on straw bales kindly lent by Dave Baker. We rounded Saturday off with dancing to Sonic Fusion and had a brilliant fish and chip supper (and by the way we hope to attract “the wagon” to the village once a month!). Thanks again to A W Windows for sponsoring a great evening. Sunday saw a brilliant and well supported dog show followed by a “bring and share” picnic. In short the weekend had something for everyone.

As last year, we had plenty of entries for the horticultural show, and wow, what a talented village we are. Some stunning entries and a massive thank you to all those who baked, made, sewed, painted, potted etc from some very young artists to those slightly more “mature” entrants. We had three judges (not from the village) and “impressed” massively underestimates their comments. There were nice prizes for all the children who entered and some very proud first place winners around the field during the afternoon. Someone even enquired about buying one of the entries!

Some additional thanks. Firstly to S&B Services, Nick Piper and A Plant for joining force to provide the generator free of charge. To Chris Avery the Social Club Bar Manager who not only stocked the bar with a great selection of real ales but also worked tirelessly throughout the weekend to ensure we had soft and alcoholic drinks and to Lesley Latter for taking on responsibility for the catering – fantastic cakes and plenty of chat. It was great to see The Cranford Inn sponsoring the catering point. Without Kathy and Malcolm Yeo lending their field the 5 a side competition would not have been possible so a great big thank you to both.

This weekend was all about community. Living in Yarnscombe is a privilege. Looking out to Exmoor and across to Lundy on Saturday afternoon made you remember just how lucky we are to live where we do. But community is about people and we really want to try and organise events which everyone wants to participate in and support. So see the advert and articles about the second weekend where we have two live music events and a village brunch. Last year we served breakfast to 121 friends and neighbours from across the parish – have you got your ticket for this year’s event which promises to be even better? See the articles with ticket and other information but please remember brunch tickets must be bought in advance to help with catering!

So thanks again to everyone who came and enjoyed. To everyone who helped. To all our sponsors, supporters and the traders who all did well (particularly the two ice cream vendors!).

Nature Notes I don't really like this time of year. The vegetation becomes rank and overgrown. Hogweed and nettles get out of hand and brambles spread everywhere. Then there are the visitors; people in cars who don't know how to reverse and drive much too fast. This results in minor tragedies; small birds picking up seeds or insects from the lanes who get swatted by speeding cars. Sometimes it is a much larger animal like the hare I saw squashed in the lane. There is no excuse for hitting a creature that size unless it leaps out in front of the vehicle. Such a waste of a beautiful, and quite rare, animal.

I have had my moan! There are compensations for this season. More butterflies, mostly in pristine condition, have suddenly appeared. There are a lot of Red Admirals about and they lay their eggs on those pesky nettles. They are easy to see, with their red and white wing bars, unlike the dusky brown Grayling or slightly more orangey Meadow Brown which can be seen fluttering about the hedges. I also saw a beautiful Painted Lady - a perfect specimen which must be a rare example of the result of breeding here. The other single sighting was a Comma, so-called because of a comma-shaped white mark on the underside of its ragged-edged wings. It has lovely orange and black markings on the upper wings.

Along with the butterflies, I have spotted several dragonflies. One, the Southern Hawker, is large and active, hunting for flies along the hedges. It has a long, thin body with broad green stripes, except for the last 3 segments of the male which are blue. Another one which I noticed was the Broad-bodied Chaser which, as its name suggests, has a broad, flattened abdomen, sky-blue in the male and brown in the female, with yellow spots down the sides. The immature nymphs live in water for up to five years, aggressively feeding on other creatures as large as small fish. They have been around for over 200 million years, because their fossilised remains have been found in Carboniferous rocks. At that time, they were enormous with wing spans of over 60 centimetres (24 inches), possibly the largest insects that have ever lived. Not something you would like to meet on a sunny afternoon!

Youth Group What a successful day the Youth Group had at the Village Weekend at the beginning of the month – thank you to all the children that helped and a huge thank you to all of you who supported our stall. All money raised will be going towards treating the children of the group over the Summer. Watch this space for further details.

A Gardner’s Diary AUGUST – Sultry late summer August is usually one of the hottest months of the year - making watering essential.

Try to use grey water wherever possible, especially as water butts may be running low if it has been a dry summer. August is traditionally holiday-time, so you might need to enlist the help of friends and family to look after the garden while you are away. When you are at home, take the time to prune summer-flowering shrubs. (article used from the RHS website: www.rhs.org.uk ) o Prune Wisteria o Don’t delay summer pruning fruits trained as restricted forms o Deadhead flowering plants regularly o Watering! - particularly containers, and new plants, preferably with grey recycled water or stored rainwater Do you have any wooden o Collect seed from garden plants garden furniture? Yarnscombe Church Rescue Group News This month, we have good news to report in two areas.

Using the 2016 Architect’s Report, we have been able to track down the cause of a good deal of the damp that has been getting into the church tower for the last year. The source is almost certainly a small wooden door that leads up out of the bellringing chamber onto the tower roof. It looks as though this door has, at some time, blown open and has now become so soaked that it is too distorted to be closed at all (see picture). So, every time it rains….the water comes into the tower!

In the very near future, we will be commissioning a suitably qualified carpenter to make the rather exciting climb up through the tower, to fix the problem. Hopefully, once the water stops coming in, the dank, rather chilly atmosphere in the church will lift somewhat and then we can think about attacking all the green mould on the walls….

Our other piece of good news is that at a meeting of the Parochial Church Council on the 18 th July, there was a unanimous vote in favour of our proposals for addressing the large backlog of maintenance items on the church building. We can now start work in earnest.

We have made some large information boards one showing the current state of maintenance and the other showing the difference that the YCRG work will make to our church over the next few years. Initially, these boards are going to be displayed inside the church, where everyone attending the music concerts over the weekend of 11/12/13 Aug will have the chance to see them.

The YCRG project to bring our church building up to waterproof, warm, stable condition and then improve its facilities such as the heating, lighting and seating, is going to be a big job and the main effort for our members over the next couple of years. There will, of course, be ways in which everyone in the community, who would like to help with this, can get involved as much, or as little, as you want to.

Social Media The village is active on both Facebook and Twitter.

The Facebook page has over 140 followers where news is shared quickly. It’s a good way to pass on information from the village or others in the locality. We follow as many local companies, organisations and community groups as possible.

There are other groups who have pages on Facebook as well – such as the Yarnscombe Village Hall, Yarnscombe Social Club, Yarnscombe Village Weekend, Youth Group and the Yarnscombe Shortmat Bowls Club. “Like” as many as you can to keep in touch will what’s going on in the Village.
