The Eagle Note from the Editors The “Weekend” has arrived – well the first one has!!

With one week to go before the first of two village weekends the final arrangements are being made, and the organising group are ready for another busy, but enjoyable weekend of fun, entertainment and community spirit.

On behalf of the Parish – the editors would like to thank everyone involved in the organisation of this weekend’s activities for their hard work and dedication to the cause. Please spread the word to family and friends and it will be great to see everyone in the field over the weekend.

A Gardner’s Diary JULY - Summer is progressing This is often one of the hottest months of the year and a great time to sit out and enjoy your garden. Keep plants looking good by regularly dead-heading, and you'll enjoy a longer display of blooms. Make sure you keep new plants well watered, using grey water where possible, and hoe off weeds, which thrive in the sunshine. (article used from the RHS website: www.rhs.org.uk ) ❖ Check clematis for signs of clematis wilt ❖ Care for houseplant while on holiday ❖ Water tubs and new plants if dry, but be water-wise ❖ Deadhead bedding plants and repeat-flowering perennials, to ensure continuous flowering ❖ Pick courgettes before they become marrows ❖ Treat apple scab ❖ Clear algae, blanket weeds and debris from ponds, and keep them topped up ❖ Order catalogues for next year’s spring-flowering bulbs ❖ Give the lawn a quick-acting summer feed, especially if not given a spring feed ❖ Harvest apricots, peaches and nectarines

Be vigilant Over the last 4-6 weeks, especially on social media, there appears to have been a concerning increase in suspicious behaviour by individuals in and around villages in our locality – namely St Giles in the Wood, Bishops Tawton and Stibbs Cross that we are aware of.

There have been posts on Facebook of two males in a small white van driving around areas of these particular villages that are not on “main roads” and in secluded residential areas.

We all know that if vehicles are seen in and around the parish the people are generally meant to be here or are lost as there is no reason to drive through the village per se.

So, during this lovely weather we’re experiencing at the moment (not that it’s going to last long apparently!!) make sure you are vigilant during the day when you have every single door and window open for the slightest of breeze and that your doors are locked at the end of the day.

Obviously, if you see anything suspicious, please report it to the police.

Letter from the Vicar Dear friends, In the Bible we read: 'The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling together; and a little child will lead them.' (Isaiah 11: 6) What is that all about? It is part of the biblical promise and hope that through Jesus Christ, God will bring a new order to all of creation- ‘a new heaven and a new earth’ as the book of Revelation puts it.

Now there is fighting and violence- then there will be perfect peace.

Now people suffer from all sorts of natural and manmade disasters- then there will be no more mourning or crying or pain.

Now we must persevere through our struggles with God's help- then we shall discover what we were truly made for.

In some of our churches this month we will read these words of the apostle Paul from Romans 8:18 ‘I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.’ Do you have that perspective on your life which following Jesus gives? You can read much more about it in the Bible. If you would like to start then you could begin with John's gospel- there learn who Jesus is and why it matters so much.

Letter to the Editors To whom it may concern There are many reasons why we enjoy living in Yarnscombe; one is that mindless vandalism is an extreme rarity. Yet on Sunday 18th June, we picked up in the garden the remnants of a broken glass which had obviously been thrown against the chapel wall late the night before or very early that morning. The number of pieces was considerable. We thought that was the end of the episode.

However, on Monday morning our dog cut her paw from a piece of glass we had missed – this required a visit to the vet, the subsequent bill and considerable time wasted, not to mention a very distressed animal. So, to the individual who was responsible, whoever you may be, do consider the consequences of your actions in future – they may be far greater than you could ever imagine.

Yarnscombe Church Rescue Group News In the last month the Group has received agreement for its Charter from both the Two Rivers Ministry Team and the Diocesan Office for Rural Church Projects. This document provides the authority for how the Group will go about its business and for the shape of its relationship with the Yarnscombe Parochial Church Council (PCC).

The PCC has, until now, been the only body responsible for Church fundraising.

The YCRG’s second meeting, held in early June, used the July 2016 Architect’s Report on the condition of the church building as the starting point for drawing up a list of the defects. We then discussed some schemes to address them in a progressive and pragmatic order and put work in hand to gather the information necessary to move these ideas forward.

It was noticed that we lacked many good photographs, particularly of the roof areas. We are very grateful to Shaun Dixon who came to our rescue and took some high-resolution video of these areas using his extremely sophisticated gyro-stabilised GPS guided drone - definitely a first for St Andrew’s Yarnscombe! A still photo from this is shown here.

In the next bulletin, we will let you know where the first projects are going to concentrate their efforts and how we are getting on with them.

Parking in Yarnscombe It has been noted over the last few weeks that access in and around the village has been restricted by vehicles not being located considerately.

Recently, the recycling truck had trouble making the weekly collection around the village. We also need to bear in mind access for deliveries needing to be made and for emergency service vehicles to gain access to properties in the village.

Driving in and around the Village A recurring issue in and around the parish is relative speed around the roads and lanes. Driving with consideration for other road users ought to be in the forefront of our minds when coming into or going out of the village. We need to be particularly observant at this time of the year for farmers working constantly in their fields as well as the hedges having their Summer growth spurt.

The roads are not straight and around every corner is ‌‌‌.. another corner.

It will only be a matter of time before there is a nasty accident on our parish roads.

BT / Openreach Stories � Do you recognise these logos? � How many of us have spotted that elusive “superfast broadband�? � Have you seen that rare sight at your own house - a BT/Openreach van and operative?!! � Did they call you back?!

We think it is fair to say, that the majority of us who have had fibre broadband installed, or those who are still waiting for it to be connected, have experienced “non-favourable� results from BT, or Openreach, or is it BT, or could it be Openreach ?!?!?!

For a communications group of companies, their communication with us, the paying customers, has been shocking/appalling/non-existent/rubbish (delete as appropriate or use your own!!).

Do you have a BT/Openreach experience you’d like to share with your fellow parishoners? Please drop us your story to yarnscombe.eagle@gmail.com and we’ll compile an interesting few pages in The Eagle in the coming months (after the Village Weekends). An abridged version of events would be appreciated, otherwise we’re sure we could write a book on our experiences!

It may be worth compiling all of our stories in one document and sending it to someone important in BT/Openreach for them to ignore (sorry that should have said “read and take note of�!!)

Yarnscombe Short Mat Bowling Club Well another year has come and gone and the short mat bowlers have had a very successful season yet again.

The Eagles team have won the Stephens League First Division once more and also won the Tony Stephens Cup again. Elliot, Graham and Mike won the Mary Kent competition.

The Eagle Team also did exceptionally well in the Devon County competitions. George Main won County Singles. Elliot, Jay and Mike won the County Triples for the second year running.

George qualified for the National Singles. Mike, Jay and Elliot & Tony, Fraser and George made it through to the National Triples & Elliot, Jay, Mike and Graham qualified for the National Fours competitions.

We also have six players who play for the Devon County Premier Team Mike, Elliot, Jay, Tony, George and Graham.

The club has two new members, Rick and Fraser who joined last season and have played very well.

We are always looking for new members to join us, so if you feel like giving it a try, please come along when the new season starts.

Nature Notes I was awoken, recently, by a chattering sound below my bedroom window and, when I looked out, I saw five magpies picking the flesh from the remains of what appeared to be a blackbird. Two of the birds were the parents who occasionally fed the other three with choice titbits. Magpies, like other members of the crow family, feed off carrion, but they are capable of killing nestlings of small birds and they frequently rob nests of their eggs.

Seen in the sunlight, they are beautiful birds with a lovely blue sheen on the wings and tail feathers. They were heavily persecuted in the past but, more recently, have increased in numbers and may be responsible for part of the decline in some of our songbirds. They have always had a rather sinister reputation and have given rise to the old rhyme: "One for sorrow, two for joy, Three for a wedding, four for a boy, Five for silver, six for gold, Seven for a story ne'er to be told".

When I see one on the road, I always say "Good morning (evening) Mr Magpie" - silly really, but rather like touching wood for luck!

In contrast to the conspicuous magpie, there is a little warbler that attracts attention by flitting in and out of the hedges, uttering a little 'charr' and disappearing, annoyingly, before one can get a good look at it. This is the whitethroat which is a small brown bird with, you've guessed it, a white throat, and a slightly raised crest on its head. Like many of our warblers it has suffered from a drop in numbers but is beginning to make a recovery. The same cannot be said of the willow warbler which used to greet me with its characteristic, delicate, warbling song in the spring but has been absent here for the past few years. It nests near the ground so it could have fallen prey to cats or stoats.

Did I see a kestrel at my bird table, the other day? I only caught a glimpse as it rose, clutching a vole (which used to visit the table), but I noticed the bird's dark eye, looking at me, and the reddish back and spotted breast. Not a sparrow-hawk I'm sure, but I've never had a visit from a kestrel before. I'm looking for its return because I think that this is the most attractive falcon and I have masses of voles for it, in my garden.

Youth Group The Youth Group shall be having a Bric-a-Brac stall, as well as a Fresh Fruit Salad Bar at the Village Weekend, Saturday 8th July. Any donations for either stall can be dropped off to Sharon Dixon @ Gwerilyn.

We would like as many children as possible to assist with these stalls throughout the afternoon. Any money raised shall be used to refund the children of the parish for the Sciencedipity workshop (details below) and also put towards a future 'treat'.

Bookings are now being taken for the Sciencedipity Workshop on Wednesday 2nd August via the Sciencedipity Facebook page @sciencedipitydevon http://ow.ly/tAB330cKRyv. This workshop has been advertised as suitable for ages 6+, however younger children are more than welcome to attend, please note that under 8's must be accompanied by an adult. Please do let me know if you book for this so that I can organise your refund, which will be given on the day.

Due to the Village Weekend there shall not be a Youth Group meeting on Friday 7th July, as we shall all be at the Comedy Night!

Social Media The village is active on both Facebook and now on Twitter.

The Facebook page has nearly 140 followers where news is shared quickly. During April, we managed to reunite two dogs with their owners as well as publicising village events such as the Village Weekend and the Youth Group’s Easter Egg Hunt.

There are other groups who have pages on Facebook as well – such as the Yarnscombe Village Hall, Yarnscombe Social Club, Yarnscombe Village Weekend, Youth Group and now the Yarnscombe Shortmat Bowls Club. “Like” as many as you can to keep in touch will what’s going on in the Village.
