The Eagle Note from the Editors Summer is nearly upon us. Lighter evenings and warmer temperatures (eventually!). This can mean only one thing. The Village Weekend(s).

Full details of the two Village Weekends have now been released and look like amazing weekends. Inside this issue is even more information.

If you are able to help “person” a stall, or assist in anyway, let Richard Purchase or Sharron know. It has all the hallmarks of being even more successful than last year.

Note from the Parish Council Congratulations to Andrew Saywell, our new Devon County Councillor. He has promised to do his best to attend our meetings as often as he can, we are hoping to welcome him for the first time at our June meeting, 28th June 7.30pm. If you have any questions for our new county councillor, please contact the parish clerk or any of the councillors, alternatively you are always welcome to attend our meetings.

By the time you read this, we will have had our Annual Parish and Annual Parish Council meeting. We will keep you updated about any issues raised at this meeting. We are still looking for somebody to take on the role as PROW (Footpath Warden), we are lucky that we have so many footpaths in our parish and it would be a real shame, if they could not be maintained, as they are a real asset to the community.

A Gardner’s Diary JUNE - Summer arrives June 21 is the longest day of the year, and the extra light and warmth encourages the garden to put on an exuberant burst of growth. But this extra light and warmth also means weeds will sprout up from seemingly nowhere. Keep on top of them by hoeing regularly in dry conditions. (article used from the RHS website: www.rhs.org.uk )

Spring Coffee Morning I am very pleased to be able to report that the proceeds of the St Andrew's Church coffee morning on 20th May amounted to a total of £465.23. (A breakdown by stall can be seen on the church porch notice board.)

This was an excellent result, an increase of some 31% over last year. We extend our sincere thanks to all who worked so hard to achieve this result and to all who came and contributed in any way.

Letter from the Vicar Is it worth flying?

I hope you're all looking forward to your coming summer holidays. However, I've noticed that the holiday time can also bring with it new experiences and fears. I know certain people who are terrified of flying. The thought of being 'Up there' for hours at a time brings them nights of sleeplessness (a bit like a caterpillar clinging desperately to the leaf and looking at a butterfly and saying, 'You won't catch me up there in one of those things). And yet, after they return, though they may have not enjoyed the flight, many speak of the joys and experiences of their holiday with great excitement. In other words it was worth going through their fear of flying to discover so many wonderful things.

And I think there are a few similarities with this experience and the experience of allowing God to come closer to our lives through His Holy Spirit. For God wants to refresh us too, to recharge our batteries, to have us spend more time with him and to discover afresh how much he loves us. Remember He is our heavenly Father. However, the whole experience of opening our lives to His Holy Spirit is also for some, a little frightening but we shouldn't let that stop us.

It is the will of Jesus that we are filled with the fullness of God (John 7:37). All new experiences in life can bring with them certain fears, fears that would try to make us run away, but this is God we are talking about, a good loving God. Who would want to run away from him? Not me!

The caterpillar may say, 'You won't catch me up there in one of those things,' and yet it was made to fly. And we were made for God, to be filled with all His fullness and the more we open ourselves to him the more we will discover that God really knows what he is doing with all of us.

May God help us through our fears to discover more of the goodness and fullness of God. Every Blessing

Yarnscombe Church Rescue Group I am sure that, like me, you all enjoy the presence of our historic church St Andrews in the centre of our lovely village.

Some of you may have noticed that, over the past few years, it hasn’t been possible to keep either the church itself, or the churchyard, quite as weatherproof, or spick and span as we would all like to see it.

A group has been formed to try to do something about this. Their aim is to co-ordinate and oversee the funding of the necessary repairs and upkeep, as well as improving the standards of the facilities in the church. This will make the Sunday Services a little more comfortable for the congregation and enable a few more events suited to this sort of building to be held from time to time.

To this end, we will be using “The Eagle� to keep everyone informed of the projects the group is putting in hand and their progress. We hope that you will be pleased to read about these and feel able to help with any you would like to.

Friday 7th July 2017 The weekend starts with a COMEDY NIGHT in the Marquee at 8:00pm. (this evenings entertainment is not suitable for children under 16 – due to adult content). The smell of freshly cooked sausages and bacon served wafted around the village on that Sunday morning.

It’s a great way to meet up with everyone and have a yummy meal cooked for you.

Featuring fiddle, melodeon, banjo, guitar, whistle and bodhran, they combine traditional and contemporary music and song to create an exciting and varied sound including rousing jigs, reels and lively songs to quieter atmospheric numbers. (wine and refreshments will be available before & during the interval)

This year we have been very fortunate to receive sponsorship from a number of local companies for each of the evening acts, catering and the brunch. A big thank you to these organisations for their support.

Horticultural Show Rules 1. Entries will be taken as detailed on entry forms. No entry fees are payable. No entries will be accepted after the times shown on the entry form.

2. The number of entries an exhibitor may make in any one class is restricted to one.

3. All exhibits must be the bone fide property of, cultivated or made by the exhibitor 4. Class cards are issued when exhibits are staged and must be placed with each exhibit, (name hidden). Exhibitors are encouraged to label horticultural exhibits with the name of the variety. Exhibits may only be submitted at the time shown below.

5. Staging of exhibits may commence at 9.00am and must be completed by 10.30am on the day of the show, when all but the judges and officials must leave the marque. Exhibits and prize cards should remain on display until the show closes at 5.00pm. Any exhibits not collected will be disposed of at 6.00pm.

6. The Yarnscombe Social Club or the Organising Committee will not be responsible for any loss or damage to exhibits before, during, or after the Show, but all reasonable care will be taken.

7. Judges may withhold prizes where the standard is too low, or where there are insufficient entries.

8. The Organising Committee shall have the power to decide all matters not provided for in these rules and on all matters on which there is any question, and their decision shall be final.

Next planning meeting The next planning meeting is on WEDNESDAY 31st MAY at 7:30pm in the SOCIAL CLUB at the VILLAGE HALL. It is open to everyone who would like to help in anyway.

Nature Notes This is the time of year when birds have built, or are building their nests, so we must be careful, in trimming back hedges or cutting grass, not to disturb or destroy what they have so carefully constructed. Some, like the long-tailed tit build domed masterpieces, with thousands of items of material, using between 1000 and 2000 feathers from other birds, in the inner lining. The nests of finches, such as the goldfinch are also superbly made with a cup of moss, roots and grass, lined with dead plant leaves and feathers, the cosiest bed for their undeveloped and helpless young. The song thrush makes a cup with a lining of mud, simple but strong. Pigeons build platforms of sticks, while crows make more elaborate structures of the same material. Ground nesting birds, such as waders and terns, opt for a hollow in the ground and larks often choose a tussock of grass.

Sparrows and swifts have learned to make use of our old buildings, nesting in crevices or ledges in the stonework.

Swallows and house martins construct cups under the eaves of houses, sometimes re-using old nests. Many seabirds such as guillemots don't bother with nests at all, simply laying their eggs on a cliff ledge. The descendants of the dinosaurs are highly adaptable and a source of wonder and delight to me and many others.

There is a danger that, living in the country as we do, we take it all for granted and never take the trouble to go for a walk and listen to the larks, or a song thrush in the evening. Experiments have shown that nature makes life better, even if it is just getting out in the garden. We feel better and we can work better if we take a break away from the television and the tablet. Nature helps us to feel balanced and sane - so get out there, visit old haunts and recapture the magic!

Youth Group A huge thank you to everyone who supported the YG stall at the Spring Coffee Morning. We made a respectable £49 which will be put towards the Sciencedipity workshop this summer.

Also a massive thank you to the Quiz organisers last evening who donated a very generous £48 to the Youth Group. This money shall be added to the Sciencedipity fund.

Sciencedipity have been booked to run a Forensic Science Workshop in the Village Hall on Wednesday 2nd August for all aged children (children under the age of 8 must be accompanied by a responsible adult). This will be bookable via the Sciencedipiity Facebook page or Website. The cost per child is usually £15, however as I regularly book Ruth for Library science workshops she has offered this for £10 per child. Details of how to book shall be shared via the Youth Groups Facebook Page and published in the Eagle closer to the time.

Social Media The village is active on both Facebook and now on Twitter.

The Facebook page has over 130 followers where news is shared quickly. During April, we managed to reunite two dogs with their owners as well as publicising village events such as the Village Weekend and the Youth Group’s Easter Egg Hunt.

There are other groups who have pages on Facebook as well – such as the Yarnscombe Village Hall, Yarnscombe Social Club, Yarnscombe Village Weekend, Youth Group and now the Yarnscombe Shortmat Bowls Club. “Like” as many as you can to keep in touch will what’s going on in the Village.
