The Eagle Note from the Editors Has Spring sprung? Have we left the Winter behind? We do hope so. It’s great to see snowdrops and daffodils “spring-ing” up in the gardens and hedgerows around the village. The evenings are drawing out too, daylight for longer – it feels like it’s been dark for months!! And, how can we not mention the bleating of the new lambs in the fields around our parish.
Big Thank You Once again, thank you to those of you who have let us have your donations towards the production of The Eagle for this year. A lot of you have been very generous again – thank you. In the twelve months that I (Sharron) have been the co-editor with Pat, we’ve seen a steady increase in the number and variety of articles included together with more and more parishoners contributing which has meant an increase in the average pages each month from 16 to 20, and therefore an increase in production costs. You’ll have noticed a change in the printing of The Eagle last month. Amazingly it does work out (a bit) cheaper (and quicker) to get a printing company to produce the 130 copies of the newsletter each month rather than us printing it and collating it ourselves!! If you’ve mislaid your “little brown envelope” for your donation, please let us know and we can let you have another one. Unfortunately, if we haven’t received your donation before the April issue, we will assume you no longer wish to receive our parish newsletter. Don’t forget the deadline for submission of any articles for The Eagle is the 20th of each month. Until next time ……………………………. !!

From your District Councillor It seems nearly unbelievable that spring seems to be just around the corner and our farmers are busy in the fields tending the land in preparation for harvest 2017. At Torridge Council there are many of us who fully understand the vital importance of successful business in our area. Agriculture and Tourism are two leading economic drivers and must be given every chance to thrive and progress. However other businesses are important too and it is very disappointing that the seemingly untouchable Valuation Office have seen it fit to increase the Business Rates on over 200 of Torridge based businesses by on average 10% with some reports of over 500% increase. This month I have received 21 communications from residents in Two Rivers ward with most being Planning related. Wedding celebrations After a brief 21 years together, we will be tying the knot on the 1st April (that's not a joke, well the "brief" bit was, but not the rest of it!). Due to both of us having large families and masses of friends, we have been unable to invite our newest friends, the villagers of Yarnscombe, to the formalities. However, we would love it if you would join us for drinks and a boogie at the Village Hall from around 9pm on the 1st of April to help us celebrate. No need to RSVP just turn up. Letter from the Vicar Sometime in the 60s AD the Apostle Paul found himself in prison. He may have been aged in his 60s had lived for almost 30 years a life of total dedication to serving Jesus. His call had been to take the amazing news about Jesus as far as he could across the known world. He had given his all and had been through some tremendous difficulties along the way. He had started up lots of new churches and visited many more to encourage and challenge them (the two always went together!). As he sat in prison he might be forgiven for taking it easy and feeling that he had done his bit. And yet in his letter from prison to the church in Philippi we read: 'I
want to know Christ – yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like…. I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. ' Wait a minute! Surely he knows Christ? Surely he has done enough pressing on for one lifetime? But…. Paul knows there is always more! More of God to know and experience, more and new ways that we are called to serve him. This is a time of new things for us in the Two Rivers Mission Community with the licensing of Paul Bysouth as Team Vicar. Paul was appointed with a brief to encourage and challenge us to move on in the new things that God has for us. New things always mean change and change can be challenging. But Jesus doesn't call us to stand still - he calls us to follow. And to follow someone you have to move! Just as the apostle Paul never lost his excitement and trust in God, I pray that all of us will renew our own sense of how fantastic it is to 'be a part of God's amazing plan' for each of us, for our churches and our communities Every blessing

Introducing the new Vicar An Invitation to all those who live in and around Yarnscombe It's great to be with you. My name is Paul Bysouth. We may not have met yet, but I have been appointed Vicar to The Two Rivers Mission Community, with responsibility for 5 Churches, including St. Andrew's Church, Yarnscombe. I do not know all the history, between the Church and the Village, however my desire is that we work together, serve one another, laugh and have fun together and even grow closer to our God in a way that is relevant in today's World. I believe that St. Andrew's is important to you. This letter is not about fund raising, but it is about the future of St. Andrews and our community. We all know the difficulties of looking after and maintaining old buildings, but this is so much more than money this is all about people, and people matter. I believe, in whatever form we think best, there is need to keep alive the presence of God among us wherever we choose to meet whether it be the Church building or somewhere else. And so, I would love to meet you, listen to your concerns and discover what your hopes and dreams are for the life and witness of St. Andrew's in our village. There is a lot at stake and I want us all to be a part of it. Therefore, can we meet at 7.00pm on 11th March at the Village Hall and learn from one another. With every Blessing,

Lent Groups throughout The Two Rivers Mission Community We'd love you to join us at one of our 3 Lent groups. The courses are open to all, no matter what you believe or where you are on your faith journey. This year's theme is 'Praying'. Isn't Prayer boring? Never! Come along and discover how exciting it can be. St Giles: “Praying as a church” Tuesday afternoons at 2.30pm beginning on February 28th for 6 weeks in the Church. We will explore how and why we pray together and gain confidence in doing so. ”Growing in prayer brings us closer to God and makes us more effective in living, worshipping and working together for his honour.” High Bickington: "Living Lent in Prayer" Every Tuesday throughout Lent @ 7:30 in the Chapel at High Bickington beginning March 7th. Have you ever wondered if there is a right way to pray? Can we only pray on our knees, with our hands together and our eyes closed? What happens if you can’t find the words to pray? Together we will be exploring different ways of praying, looking at Celtic, Ignatius and reflective styles of prayer; and we will take a closer look at the Lord’s Prayer. Each week we will spend time in prayer using these different ways of praying and focusing our prayers on the needs of our own communities. Youth Group We’ll be back after the half term break on
Friday 3rd March. Hopefully with the lighter evenings on the way we can look forward to some fun in the field at the start of each Group evening. We hope to have lots of fun visits and activities at the Youth Group during the year – if you have any ideas or would like to host an evening, please let us know. It’s great for the children to experience new skills and to learn about the world around them. The Youth Group gets together on alternative Fridays during term time starting at 7:00pm until 9:00pm. £1.50 per (oldest) child, £1.00 for siblings. All children are welcome to come along to any of our “get togethers” whenever they are able to (no commitment to attend each time). The only thing we ask is that any children under the age of 8 are accompanied by a responsible adult during the evening. We also need to bear in mind that there needs to be three adults in attendance for safety reasons. Fibre Optic Broadband Fibre optic broadband is now available in [parts of] the village. The definitive website for confirming if your house can have fibre broadband is https://www.homeandwork.openreach.co.uk/when-can-i-get-fibre.aspx If this site says you can have it and you want it, you need to place an order with an ISP (Internet Service Provider). Some ISP aren't yet up to speed with this and may say you can't get it when you in fact can, so you may have to battle with them. BT are one that do recognise it and are taking orders for the fibre optic "BT Infinity" service. Good luck!!

Nature Notes February marks the transition from Winter to Spring, reflected in the conflicting signs from our feathered friends. On the days when the weather is very cold the fields have been full of large flocks of redwings and fieldfares. On warm days, when the sun is shining, the fields and woods resound with bird song, blackbirds, dunnocks, robins, chaffinches and the occasional thrush, marking out their territories prior to breeding. The redwings are probably on their way back to continental Europe, having wintered here and in Ireland. Most of the other birds mentioned are native to this country and they have been joined by larks whose song is always, to me, a sign that Spring is on its way. Snowdrops have been in bloom for several weeks and have been joined by daffodils, primroses and celandines - all yellow - which offset the drabness of the mud-spattered banks and hedges. The snowdrop is widespread throughout the country, but there is some doubt as to whether it is native or naturalised. It was recorded in private parks and gardens as far back as 1597 but not in the wild until 1770 when it was noted in Gloucestershire and Worcestershire in vast numbers. Seen as a symbol of purity by the Catholic Church they were planted at monastic sites right across Britain which explains their presence in ancient churchyards and amongst the ruins of former abbeys. There are different varieties but, in general, they like damp, shady places in which to thrive. What of the animals? Badgers appear to have been active this winter, which has been relatively mild. Sadly their corpses are all too evident on the roadsides. I realise that they are viewed by many farmers as the culprits in the spread of bovine TB, but the sight of their bodies alongside the rubbish which bedecks our highways is, I think, rather sad. My untidy garden appears to have been a refuge for hedgehogs but, on the other hand, I have seen fewer grey squirrels (perhaps, because my birdfeeders are more squirrel proof). Finally, I must put in a good word for wasps, although I had a nest in my loft, last year! It is only in the late summer that they start to annoy us: the rest of the time they are busy picking off aphids and caterpillars to feed their young. The don't normally sting unless they are trapped. Ditto, hornets.

Email Scam A new scam has recently been bought to the attention of the Police and the Neighbourhood Watch team in Torridge, which is very easy to catch people out. A very realistic email is received, which purports to be from the Police and is headed up ‘Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP)’. It will go on to give brief details about a speeding violation or some other traffic offence and will ask you to click on a link to access the full details. If you are sure that you or another family member is not involved, then DO NOT CLICK on the link. The link will probably infect your computer with malware. Even if you are uncertain about the stated violation it is better to check first by contacting the Police independently, via 101 or email, quoting the references given in the original scam email, to get confirmation. Suspected scams should be reported using the www.actionfraud.police.uk site which has an easy to follow reporting link and you will also be able to forward the scam email.

RSPB Garden Birdwatch
Maybe I was spoilt last year when I took part in the RSPB Garden Birdwatch (seeing over 20 different species and 67 individual birds). This year the numbers were down and I blame the weather and the starlings!! The rain certainly kept the birds away when the count took place at the end of January with only 14 separate species and 58 individuals – however, 15 of those were the starlings! I mustn’t crumble as these (and house sparrows) are on the decline, but even so ………….. !! The number of visiting house sparrows slightly increased (these are also in decline). Somewhat disappointingly though, in the garden, the number of finches and tit birds were significantly lower than the previous two years. Our resident blackbird, “Spot”, made his appearance with “Mrs Spot”, and “son of Spot” – he also told an imposter, in no uncertain terms, to “go away”!! It was like an episode of a soap opera!! Hopefully, Spring-time will bring more birds and their chicks to the garden.

Annual Subscriptions The Eagle is now in its 34th year of production and printing prices have increased steadily over the years, but the donations haven’t! So this year we are asking all households for a contribution of at least £3.00 to cover the production and printing costs of The Eagle. A small brown envelope was attached to the front of the February issue of The Eagle which should be delivered back with your contribution enclosed to either of the editors in the Village or given to Barry, the postman who is willing to pick up any from “out of the village” locations. If we don’t receive your contribution over the next couple of months we will assume that you no longer wish to receive a copy of The Eagle.
