Happy New Year to you all!

We hope you had an enjoyable and relaxing time over Christmas and New Year. Hopefully all those of you who suffered with the “Yarnscombe Cold” have fully recovered.

A special “Welcome” to Yvonne, Rob, Kirsty and Emma who moved into Rose Cottage from Leicestershire just before Christmas. We all hope you’ll be very happy in Yarnscombe.

So, what will be in store for us all in 2017? Do you have any special plans? Writing an article for The Eagle maybe?! From your District Councillor Firstly, a happy new year to you all.

As your District Councillor part of my role is to ensure that your views are heard loud and clear at Torridge. Well over the past year, I have raised over 60 issues linked to our Two Rivers ward from planning to community transport and from road conditions to waste collection.

As I have written before the Boundary Commission are currently looking at changing the wards within Torridge. Their preferred view is that Yarnscombe is to go in with Gammaton and East Bideford, whilst St Giles and High Bickington are to go with Roborough etc. We will wait and see what the future will bring but until then I will continue to work for you all in Yarnscombe.

Torridge District Council continue to run a tight ship and I am pleased to confirm that we have run the council for the last 12 months and have made a small surplus which will be re-invested into council services. At a time when Government grants to councils are being cut and even taken away this is a good news story for us all.

Between the 1st Dec 2016 and 17th Jan 2017 I have received; 22 emails, 11 phone calls and 2 letters. Issues such as refuse collection, planning, dog controls, MP expenses have all been replied to by myself.

Village Hall Car Park On Saturday 25th February there is a large function taking place at the Village Hall (Charity Auction) which is likely to be fully supported, therefore could villagers bear in mind the need for spaces in the car park for the evening event.

Notes from the Parish Council Happy New Year and best wishes to all our parishioners for 2017!

In late 2015 Yarnscombe PC purchased a snow gritter with the help of a grant provided by Devon County Council. During spells of icy weather, the road from Langley to Clogshill Cross is usually gritted and from now on, should it become necessary, the road to the top of the village will also be gritted. We are very grateful to Dan Farr for providing this essential service.

Although the council’s original application to Grantscape for improvements to the Playing Field was rejected last month, at this month’s Deep Moor Landfill Site Liaison Meeting we were informed that we could submit a new application. This will be done as soon as possible, we will keep you updated about the progress of this application.

At last month’s council meeting it was decided to set the precept for the financial year 2017/18 at £6000.

Councillors took into account rising costs of insurance and the need to double the amount for “Maintenance of Assets”. County Councillor Boyd also strongly advised to secure the financial future of the council, as in near future precept could be capped at 2% and council needed a financial safety cushion, in order to deal with existing and new challenges in the year ahead.

Message from the Police In light of the incident in the village over the Christmas period, we have received the following note from our PFCSO Sandra Brown.

“I would just like to give people the advice to be vigilant and check out buildings/sheds regularly.

Ensuring they are as secure as possible and items of large value either anchored to the ground and/or marked to enable identification. There are reasonably priced audible alarms that are quite easily fitted to outside sheds and act as a deterrent. It is always advisable for you to keep a record of serial numbers and product details, possibly take a photograph as well and record any identifiable markings.

If you are going away please let people you can trust know, it is advisable to avoid using social media to document or share information if you are away.

Please contact us on 101 if you feel you have any information regarding the recent burglary in the village.

Coffee Morning

I would like to thank everyone who came and supported the coffee morning at the end of November and to the lovely people who helped out. Also thanks for all the kind donations of raffle prizes and cakes and to the Social Club for the donation of £30 to buy extra special raffle prizes. We raised an incredible £711.00 for this great cause.

Mandy Avery Charity Head Shave

Following on from Mandy, I would like to thank her for organising a superb coffee morning and to everyone who helped and supported it.

Also, thank you to everyone who sponsored or donated to Mike and Anthony’s head shave held at The Panniers Barnstaple last October, together with the sponsor money from Neil Daubney from Ilfracombe, the three of them have so far raised a magnificent £2,378 which has gone to the Over and Above new cancer appeal for the North Devon District Hospital.

Thank you also to the Yarnscombe Social Club for donating (to the same appeal) a total of £370 raised from the Cider Walk and BBQ evening.

Christmas Fayre Do you remember Saturday 3rd December? It was the date of the St Andrew’s Church Christmas Fayre where the majority of the parish came along to share in stalls, cakes and the now infamous “wobbly coffees”!!!

Richard Pengilley (Treasurer of the Yarnscombe PCC) is pleased to be able to report that the Christmas Fayre raised a net total of £554.60. A breakdown of the receipts from individual stalls can be seen on the church porch notice board.

We are very grateful to all who helped in any way, and hope that those who came enjoyed the occasion.

A Farmer’s Diary The website www.farm-direct.co.uk has been used for these details and it says it’s based on the North of England, so we’re not sure how different our diaries are, but it’s an idea how busy our local farmers are likely to be during February.     

A Month In The Life ……. of the co-editors of The Eagle!

When The Eagle lands on your doormat each month, work will have already started on the next issue. The standard information is laid out ready in advance such as the contact information and adverts. We check the Torridge Council website to make sure the rubbish collection dates are correct (bearing in mind bank holidays)!

Throughout the month our regular contributors send in their articles for inclusion. A few days before the 20th of the month deadline, we (well, I do) get a little worried about not having enough to include. It is always the case that we get the final items on deadline day – enough for 16/18 pages each month, and all is well!!!

Both the editors get together a couple of days after the 20 th to go through the content and proof read the newsletter. Then the printing starts!! Sharron takes two evenings on two printers to produce 130 copies of each issue. Pat then collates them together and puts them together in the rounds that she (and Martin) deliver to and for Barry while he’s out on his postal round. All before the 1 st of the next month.

We hope you enjoy reading through The Eagle – and it is fantastic that more parishoners are contributing each month, it means a varied and interesting read for us all each month.

Letter from the Vicar On 30th January Rev Paul Bysouth began his ministry in the Two Rivers Mission Community as Team Vicar with particular responsibility for the parishes of Alverdiscott, Horwood, Huntshaw, Newton Tracey and Yarnscombe. Here is his first letter!

The word's out - 'The New Vicar is coming. 'So what's he like? ' Well I'm different, I'm unique, a one off and special, just like all of you.

I was born and raised in inner city London, a true 'Cockney.'

School was a matter of survival and I left at the age of 17 to travel. I've worked at everything between cooking Mexican food to singing in a Rock & Roll band in California USA. At 21, having achieved many of the things I wanted to do, I began to ask those BIG QUESTIONS of life. 'What am I here for?' 'Is life really about working for a semi-detached, a relationship, kids, a pet and then death - that's it? I remember saying 'surely there's more to life than this?'

Having been encouraged to read a 'Best seller' I began looking at the Bible and was struck by the person of Jesus and all that he said. Time doesn't allow me to go into detail but I discovered that God is interested in all of us including me, ME! With all my faults and failings. I discovered that He loved us enough to let His son Jesus die for us, to bring us back into a relationship with Himself. What's more it wasn't when I got my life together and all was perfect. As one of my favourite Bible verses remind me, 'God has shown us how much he loves us, it was while we were still sinners that Christ died for us'(Romans 5:8).

A lot has changed since the day I gave my life to Jesus and there is still more to come. A new adventure awaits us all. For me and Wendy it's coming to Devon to take up my new post. For you, who knows what God has in store? So what's the New Vicar like? I hope you'll find out for yourself as we meet and talk over a drink and discover God at work in all of our lives.

Youth Group Before the break the children were very busy preparing for the Christmas Fayre and the goodies they made raised over £90 for the group. Thank you to everyone who supported our stall and bought items the children (and the team) made. These proceeds will be probably put towards a trip later on in the year – watch this space.

Just before Christmas, Karen and Robin (Hutton) very kindly came back to the Group with the pottery creations the children had made ready for decorating. All masterpieces were painted expertly by the children – and some were made especially as Christmas presents which we’re sure were greatly received.

Don’t forget to pick up your pottery if you haven’t taken them home yet.

When the children went back to school we had our (late) Christmas party with lots of fun, games, food and lots more chocolate!

We hope to have lots of fun visits and activities at the Youth Group during the year – if you have any ideas or would like to host an evening, please let us know.

All children are welcome to come along to any of our “get togethers” whenever they are able to (no commitment to attend each time). The only thing we ask is that any children under the age of 8 are accompanied by a responsible adult during the evening.

Yarnscombe Baby & Toddler Group It’s great to see that there are a number of younger children who have moved into the village recently and it would be wonderful for parents and children to have the opportunity get together close to home.

Billy Elliot comes to Yarnscombe!

On Saturday

11th February at 8.15pm, on

the village hall’s big screen, there will be a showing of London’s Victoria Palace Theatre production of Billy Elliot – The Musical – Live. Admission is free for all – there is a 15 rating owing to the use of strong language. However, as this is a private showing, there can be parental discretion here.

Set in a northern mining town against the background of the 1984/85 miners’ strike, Billy’s journey takes him out of the boxing ring and into a ballet class where he discovers a passion for dance that changes his life forever.

This is a fantastic, uplifting show with a great storyline, plenty of humour and amazing musical numbers. There’s no need to book; just turn up, grab yourself a drink and enjoy a wonderful Saturday night out. See you there.

Knit and Natter Knit and Natter is a fun, sociable event open to anyone, whether experienced or complete beginners. It is a great way for those who are keen on learning to knit for the first time, or for those who are old hands at knitting. To get involved, simply get together with friends, family or colleagues any time throughout February or March to hold your very own Knit & Natter. This is a two-hour sponsored knit, where you raise sponsorship or collect donations for your efforts.

All proceeds go to North Devon Hospice and help us to provide our essential care to local patients and families in your area.

For your Knit & Natter event we will send you patterns to knit blanket squares, chicks or bunnies (to use as Easter egg holders), or Twiddlemuffs. A Twiddlemuff is a double thickness hand muff with bits and bobs attached inside and out. It is designed to provide a stimulation activity for restless hands for patients suffering from dementia. All knitting you produce will be used at the hospice or distributed to other charities.

Annual Subscriptions The Eagle is now in its 34th year of production and printing prices have increased steadily over the years, but the donations haven’t! So this year we are asking all households for a contribution of at least £3.00 to cover the production and printing costs of The Eagle.

A small brown envelope is attached to the front of this issue of The Eagle which should be delivered back with your contribution enclosed to either of the editors in the Village or given to Barry, the postman who is willing to pick up any from “out of the village” locations.

If we don’t receive your contribution over the next couple of months we will assume that you no longer wish to receive a copy of The Eagle.
