NOTE FROM THE EDITORS October is officially the quickest month on the calendar. It seems like only five minutes ago we were putting the last issue together. It also seems like the wettest – how much rain!!

With all the surface water flowing down the roads and the farmers relocating livestock and cutting hedges, the roads in and around the parish have become very muddy and wet. *Please take care* The suggested speed limit is 20mph around the village particularly bearing in mind the corners and road conditions.

A couple of weeks ago, there was an accident in the village where it would seem was caused by all of the above.

Luckily our parish resident was ok, albeit shaken, but please can we, and our visitors, take care around the village and look out for road users and conditions.

NOTES FROM THE PARISH COUNCIL

I have previously introduced our two district councillors, Cllr. Lock and Cllr. Clarke.

Usually, one of them, if not both, attend our meetings on a monthly basis. This is your chance to meet your district councillors “face to face”. Even if they are not able to answer your queries and questions there and then, they will be happy to follow it up and you will be able to put a face to a name.

At our next meeting Cllr. Brice and Cllr. Cooke will have had met Darryl Jagger, our Neighbourhood Highways Officer. They will provide us with feedback and by next month, we should be able to give you more details about which roads have been earmarked for improvement.

Climate change and environmental issues make national news. On a more local level Torridge District Council has published its Climate Change Strategy and Yarnscombe PC will fall in line (more info to be found on www.torridge.gov.uk). Due to the parish council’s size and location, there is a limit to what we can achieve. Councillors stressed the need for improvements in public transport and how individuals, as well as organisations, need to tackle the challenges of climate change.

YARNSCOMBE SHORT MAT BOWLING CLUB

The Yarnscombe Carol Service, which was so well supported last year, is now coming into view again: it takes place this year on Sunday 22 December.

But there's a problem: the keyboard player, who lives near Okehampton, is unable to be with us this year so we are urgently seeking a replacement. We need someone who can play the standard well-known Christmas carols and hymns in fourpart harmony (music supplied) on a keyboard, which we can supply, to support a very small but enthusiastic group of instrumentalists. Rehearsals are currently scheduled for 7:30pm on the four Tuesdays before the service so there will be plenty of time to "fit in".

Members would like to say “Thank you” very much to for donating two new pipes to our club which will make rolling up our bowls mats much easier.

THE BIG QUIZ: SEASON 4 ROUND 1

The new Quiz League season opened with a bang on 19th October with nine teams taking part – another great turn out. Last year’s overall victors, Barton Hall Again, returned to begin the defence of their title and continued from where they left off, with a convincing victory over the Outsiders and the rest of the field. Have we found Yarnscombe’s Manchester City and Liverpool? Congratulations and a big thank you to all who took part.

We do have room for more teams and we’d love to have you join us. If you don’t have a team, we’ll find you one! Next quiz is on Saturday 16th November at 8.15pm in the Victory Hall.

ANNUAL REVIEW – VILLAGE HALL & SOCIAL CLUB

hire agreements for a whole range of situations and equipment in place to protect our facilities (it seems to be what everyone is doing nowadays!).

This last year has seen significant investment and improvements to both the Village Hall and Social Club, none of which would have been possible without the hard work and dedication of the Village Hall & Social Club Committee to whom I pay tribute and give my sincere thanks. Special thanks to those Committee members who organise and run the regular Friday bingo nights which continue to be the largest income earner for the hall. Thanks also to those who have organised events during the year.

Thank you to all those in the village who have signed up to Easyfundraising – so simple to use and raises money for the hall without having to do anything other than press a button when you buy something online! If you haven’t “signed on” why not do so right now?

The Social Club has not been left out of the investment spend. The bar has had a revamp, a new fridge is being acquired to replace one which was nearly 20 years old, a new BBQ bought and with the help of our local TDC Councillors we now have a store room chiller unit in place and working. We have also bought a marquee which you will have seen at the fete in July. Nearly £3,500 spent.

Looking first at the hall you will surely have noticed the new shutters which make the opening and closing of the usable spaces so much easier. The additional storage shed which eventually arrived in the summer (and thanks to Torridge District Councillors for their support) is already bursting with chairs and equipment but the main storage in the hall is now accessible and it is now much easier to get out furniture and clear away.

The use of the social club has regrettably dwindled somewhat lately so any ideas on how we can rejuvenate the offering would be very welcome.

You may not have noticed the hall now has all new plastic facia boards and guttering. A big expense but essential to control and limit costs of ongoing maintenance. All the required annual servicing and maintenance has been carried out. The children’s play equipment has again been inspected and small remedial works undertaken.

We are now looking to the final stages of the investment plan (although you never know what may be needed next!). This covers the urgent repair or replacement of the lights on the footpath behind the hall (alongside the play area) and possibly improved safety lighting in and around the car park but specifically near the road by the bus shelter.

The investment in the hall alone has in the last year been approx. £11,000 but our main running costs remain electricity. We are doing all we can to minimise usage and have improved controls on both the heating and hot water. The cost of electricity alone is approx. £3,800 per annum. It is essential therefore that the hall continues to attract paying bookings to help cover costs. To further publicise our brilliant facility a new web site has been developed, is in the final stages of testing and will shortly go live.

A full set of audited accounts will be available at the AGM and any Committee member will be pleased to answer any questions you may have.

The Ministry team and Mission Council have been busy making plans for the future. We believe God is calling us to ensure that there is a service in each church in the Mission Community each week; so that the Christians of each village may join together to worship, learn, pray and plan their work in their community. These weekly services may take a traditional form, but equally as likely they will be informal gatherings, family services, prayer and praise – whatever each church feels will best serve the needs of their community.

Many of the services will be led by church members. We pray that the Christians in each village will join in, whether they currently attend church or not. The task we have set ourselves is not going to be easy, but we are committed to starting on the first Sunday in February, after we have joined together in Newton Tracey on 26th January to say goodbye to Rev Paul Bysouth.

NATURE NOTES I encountered only one person picking blackberries this year - although I'm sure there were more. Cutting the hedges in early October destroyed most of them and, in any case, after 11th October they became inedible because, according to folklore, that's when the devil spits on them. But, of course, they remain as a source of food for many small creatures such as mice, voles and birds. At one time, gathering blackberries was a family occasion and an excuse for getting your hands and mouth stained with purple juice. The fruit was put into delicious blackberry and apple pies or made into blackberry jam or jelly.

This is the time of year when we might notice house spiders. Some of them are quite big and, seen out of the corner of an eye, could be mistaken for a small mouse scuttling beneath a chair or sofa. They are quite harmless and are content to remain out of sight, the males and females getting together to produce more little spiders which we humans tend to catch and put outside in the cold and wet, which they don't like.

We have just celebrated the Harvest and this year has been a good one for plums, damsons, apples and pears, as well as hazelnuts and even beech mast. The last-named is quite an important food source for small mammals and birds. I have also noticed a lot of berries on the hawthorn bushes which is a sign that we might expect a hard winter - or maybe that we have had a good summer? The horse chestnut trees have produced a lot of 'conkers' too. I wonder if children still gather them to play conkers or has health and safety laid its heavy hand on the game. I hear that some schools have banned it altogether.

The swallows have finally departed and it will not be long before our winter visitors arrive. Flocks of starlings, many of them from the continent, will start to gather to perform those wonderful exhibitions of aerial mastery. They will be joined by the red-wings and field-fares, relatives of the thrushes, which find our islands a refuge in the colder weather. Be thankful for our climate - the birds appreciate it!

The Ambulance service have details of our defibrillator, the location and the code to open the cabinet and should tell you when you ring them (the defibrillator is in the entrance to the Victory Hall).

The defibrillator has to be kept in a temperature-controlled cabinet to prevent deterioration. If you need to access the defibrillator the code to the cabinet is

0000 ďƒž (four zeros) followed by the Tick This will unlock the cabinet. The defibrillator is automated and can be used by anyone and is selfexplanatory. Once you open the lid to the defibrillator and turn it on please listen carefully and follow the voice instructions. (Do not use in wet conditions) If you do need to use the defibrillator, please let us know on 01805 624834 as we will need to replace parts and ensure it is working.

LOCAL VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES PARKINSON’S TORRIDGE BRANCH NEEDS YOU! The Torridge Branch of Parkinson's UK provides support for People with Parkinson’s, their family and Carers and we cover much the same area as Torridge District Council.

We do this by holding monthly coffee mornings in both Holsworthy and Bideford as well as a whole raft of events and activities aimed at improving the lives and well-being of everyone affected by this disease.

We are currently looking to recruit new volunteers to continue and expand this important work. You don’t need to be directly affected by Parkinson’s, only have ability and enthusiasm to join us.

We need a newsletter editor/compiler, a branch librarian, a meeting minute taker, someone to help with admin, an event and transport organiser, a workshop/seminar organiser, and of course lots of people to help with the important things like making tea and coffees and fund raising etc. particularly in Holsworthy.

It involves nothing too onerous or challenging but we do have a lot of fun.

GENERAL POSITION AT TORRIDGE DISTRICT NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

We are fast approaching a time when Torridge District Neighbourhood Watch will cease to exist and all the good work done over the years will be lost.

This is due to the reluctance of Members to come forward and to take a part in the running of the Watch.

Programme of events:

We are losing our Secretary Mike Jackson in February after he has been in the post for six long years, were he has done an outstanding bit of work at our Annual General Meeting. Up until now we have no one come forward to take on the job and without a Secretary we are not able to exist. No blame can be put on Mike has like Angela Lovering before him they put a lot of hard work into the job for six years.

Your Chairperson David Braziel is running the Watch under very difficult circumstances with help from his Vice-Chairperson Tom Carrick who is trying his best to help even though being in poor health. We have both put long hours and many visits apart from keeping the Crime Report/Newsletter running for which is this week the 490th Issue. We understand how helpful this is to you all and will hope to keep it running in future.

Apart from the Secretary we would also like some more people to come onto the Forum. We do not hold many meetings a year and usually only last 1.5 hours. The Forum is the Managing Committee of Torridge District Neighbourhood Watch and all aspects of finance and future planning are discussed at length and voted on. It would be nice if a few more people would come forward and give a small part of their time. Any Co-ordinator can apply and a person with specific skills could be voted on.

We are all suffering from getting older and less able, but we can all make a big effort to keep a very public organisation going for the good of us all. Please contact David or Tom with any ideas you might have on the situation. We would like to thank you all for the support you have given us over many years and can assure you of our continued effort in the future.

PASTORAL LETTER October 2019 Dear Friends in Christ

Bishop Nick, Bishop Jackie and I are writing to you at a crucial moment in the story of our nation.

Though there have been detailed negotiations about our future relationship with the EU this week, the political landscape is constantly shifting and we still don’t know exactly how things will play out. What is certain is that we will need to find new ways of relating to our neighbouring countries in Europe.

There are also deep divisions in our nation. Whichever way you voted in the 2016 referendum, what cannot be denied is how profoundly unsettling and politically divisive the current situation is for many people. How should we as Christians respond and pray in this turmoil?

Our role as church leaders in this situation is not to take sides. Last month the Bishops of the Church of England made a public statement about Brexit (https://www.churchofengland.org/more/mediacentre/news/bishops-issue-open-letter-brexit) calling amongst other things for a renewal of respect in public discourse. The current culture of recrimination, scapegoating, and of blaming and shaming is damaging our national life.

The Church of England must continue to be the Church for everyone. There are leavers and remainers in every congregation in Devon, but as Christians we are united by our shared responsibility to work for the common good and to promote a culture of mutual respect. We also have a responsibility to speak out for the most vulnerable in our communities and to help them as best we can. Are there practical things we can do by way of support? As a Diocese, we have an incredible network of parishes, schools and chaplaincies across Devon. If we work together, we can make a difference.

Food Banks At this time of enormous uncertainty, it is likely that foodbanks will come under additional strain. In the event that we leave the EU without a deal, it is possible that there may be temporary shortages of some foods. Prices may also rise and foodbank usage may go up. So please think about giving extra support to the food banks in your area.

Ensure that stocks are high and that your local centre is staffed by enough volunteers.

I was a stranger and you welcomed me In his parable of the sheep and the goats (Matthew 25), Jesus praises those who welcome the stranger, who feed the hungry and clothe the destitute. This is a moment in our nation’s life for friendship and generous hospitality,

and above all for welcoming the stranger in our midst. As the uncertainty continues, levels of fear may rise. Now is the time to reach out hands of friendship to any EU nationals in our neighbourhoods, including groups of migrant or seasonal workers on our farms.

Supporting our Farming Community The farming community in Devon is coming under increasing pressure with the uncertainty surrounding Brexit. None of us know exactly what will happen in the event of a no-deal Brexit, but many fear that farming will be badly affected by inflated tariffs and uncertain support mechanisms. It is highly likely that our beef and sheep farmers will be particularly badly hit if the Government does not step in to support. And, of course, it is not only farmers who will be affected, but their workers, contractors and suppliers, and all the inter-related businesses in the rural economy.

The resources listed below may be of use to you in supporting and signposting people in your locality. We all need to watch out for the lonely, the anxious and the vulnerable. Questions remain over what changes there might be to fishing quotas, the export of fish into Europe and the rules about who can access the fishing grounds surrounding Devon’s coastline.

Finally, although we are circulating this letter to the clergy and readers of the Diocese, we very much hope that this letter is shared as widely as possible. You may wish to include it in your parish magazine or newssheet or read all or part of it aloud in church on Sunday. One thing we can all do is to pray for the unity and reconciliation of our nation, for our politicians and community leaders, for journalists and all who shape public opinion. Let us pray that, strengthened by the Spirit of unity and truth, we embrace positively whatever the next chapter holds for our nation and walk together in love, compassion and hope.

God of hope, in these times of change, unite our nation and guide our leaders with your wisdom.

Give us courage to overcome our fears, and help us to build a future in which all may prosper and share; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

10am to 12 noon There will be stalls selling hand made children's clothes, bags, cushions and lots more, books, cakes, raffle and of course coffee and delicious homemade cakes.

The village Youth Group is still up and running on alternative Friday evenings during term time.

The group meets in the Village Hall between 7pm and 9pm and costs £2 per child; there is also a tuck shop.

Activities can be planned for the evening or if you’d like to go along and share your hobbies or stories, please get in touch.

Children of all ages are welcome; under 8’s to be accompanied by an adult. A minimum of 3 adults to be at the Hall for the group to run.

It would be great to see you there after the half term on 8th & 22nd November. Keep an eye on the Youth Group Facebook page for updates.

We are waiting on a decision about the future of the Mobile Library Service from Devon County Council after a consultation exercise earlier this year. As this is the case these timetables are provisional and may change, but we will advertise well in advance if they do.
