RUBBISH COLLECTION REMINDER Last month saw the new day for our black bags and a number of us were caught out with the really early collection on the Wednesday morning. We either have to put our bags out the night before or before 5:45am as we are the first collection of the route.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING –

Village Hall & Social Club Committee

30th October – an important date for your diary!

There are currently up to 13 people who form the Committee which was re-formed 4 years ago when the separate Village Hall and Social Club Committees merged. There is a constitution which is available from our current secretary, Lesley Latter, and this sees at the AGM the election of the following;

The AGM of the Village Hall and Social Club will be held at 8pm on 30th October to receive reports from the Chairperson, Secretary and Treasurer (Village Hall and Social Club) and elect a committee for the coming year. Everyone in the village is entitled to attend and put themselves forward for election. So, give it some thought!

So, what does the Committee do? In addition to the full charitable Trustee role in respect of the hall, including maintaining the building and ensuring it is financially secure, the social club and all associated activities of the club are managed and overseen. These are crucial village facilities and need our support.

THE BIG QUIZ REMINDER

YARNSCOMBE WENT POTTY!!

Well done to you all!

What a wonderful response to the flower pot festival.

We had flower pots festooned with plants; we had handmade pots. We had no manner of fantastic animals, wizards, lighthouses with some made from plastic pots and the more adventurous chose terracotta pots.

I hope I have managed to reward all the small designers. If I missed you, please let me know.

The Big Quiz is definitely returning!

From October through to March there’ll be one quiz per month, on a Saturday at 8.15pm in the Social Club at the Village Hall - £2 per person, teams of six maximum.

The photos will be on show in the Social Club soon (but here are a few now).

You don’t have to turn up to every one as there’s a prize for each of the six nights.

Do remember that the events of the week prior to the quiz always form the first round.

NOTES FROM THE PARISH COUNCIL This month just a few lines regarding two outstanding vacancies: In December 2013 Cllr. Williams took on the role as Public Rights of Way Warden.

Since March 2016 we have been looking for somebody to take over this role, Cllr. Williams has done whatever he can, but his work commitments limit what he can do.

Nevertheless, we are very grateful for his ongoing efforts. This voluntary role could be shared between a couple of people, it only requires an interest in the countryside and a couple of spare hours during the Spring/ Summer. Walking the footpaths in our beautiful surroundings shouldn’t be too much of a chore and it would ensure that existing footpaths would be in good condition so that other people can enjoy them for many years to come.

PARISH OBITUARIES

Her daughter messaged the village Facebook page: “A huge ‘thank you’ to everyone who supported yesterday’s service of celebration for mum’s (Joyce Wake) life. From the welcome the family received, to the flowers in ‘mum’s window’, the superb buffet laid on by the WI, John Carvosso agreeing to take the service, Hazel playing the organ and the opportunity to chat to mum’s friends and neighbours – it was perfect, and exactly as mum would have wanted. Thank you Yarnscombe!”

Born: March 1939 Passed away: 17th August 2019 at South Molton Community Hospital at 80 years of age.

Originally farming in Somerset, Bob settled in our community over 40 years ago.

The Ambulance service have details of our defibrillator, the location and the code to open the cabinet and should tell you when you ring them (the defibrillator is in the entrance to the Victory Hall).

Although ill health plagued him for the last few years of his life, prior to that he was as an active member of the community, supporting local events and activities.

The defibrillator has to be kept in a temperaturecontrolled cabinet to prevent deterioration. If you need to access the defibrillator the code to the cabinet is

He was a bell ringer at St. Andrews Church, skittler and fund raiser for local charities. His efforts included forming the SACOA club (St Andrews Church Organ Appeal) in the form of a 100 club and with the help of volunteers raised enough money to repair the church organ. This club with Bob at the helm went onto raise money for the community and local charities at large.

Many will remember Bob at the village annual fete, with his dice game. Furthermore he was in the past editor and later treasurer of the Eagle, the Yarnscombe Parish magazine.

A strong and independent character who will always be remembered.

FROM THE RECTOR

SERVICES IN YARNSCOMBE OCTOBER 2019

Greetings! It’s a real delight for Helen, the girls and I to have now settled into the Mission Community. On our arrival at High Bickington Rectory we were met with a hot meal and several food parcels. The garden had been tidied and looked great. Many thanks to everyone for their kindness.

It is of course going to take time to get to know everyone, and for everyone to get to know us. After my first Sunday service in each church we’ll have coffee and hold a ‘get together’ – for me to get to know the church family and for the church family to get to know me. Even if you do not normally go please come along to my first visit to your church.

Being nosy is a perfectly good reason to turn up and you will receive a warm welcome. I also plan to get around as many church and village events as possible between now and Christmas, so do stop me and introduce yourself – I’ll be the man in a dog collar looking slightly lost.

The challenge facing us as churches is great. At my interview we discussed some exciting plans which I trust will help us grow and flourish. Jesus promised that he would build his church and the gates of hell would not overcome it. I take him at his word! But we need to play our part; praying and serving as we enjoy living as children of God.

NATURE NOTES We have been blessed with some warm, midSeptember, sunshine which has brought out a host of flying insects, providing some welcome food for the swallows which are gathering before they set off South. About 5 billion birds, from many different species, are preparing, at this time of year, to fly from Europe and Asia to various parts of Africa. This is the greatest mass migration on Earth, which used to baffle our forefathers who had some odd ideas about where the birds went during the Winter, even believing that swallows hibernated under the surface of ponds and lakes. We know a bit more nowadays and believe that birds use a combination of the Earth's magnetic field, the sun, moon and stars together with mountain ranges and rivers, to find their way. Juvenile birds will be making this long journey for the first time which makes it all the more amazing.

I have mentioned the painted lady 'invasion' of 2009 which I noted, at the time, in my diary. It occurs about every decade and, bang on time, it has happened this year. On a recent visit to the gardens at Rosemoor, I noticed a good number of these lovely butterflies, together with red admirals and a few of the now rarer (once common) small tortoiseshells. They were particularly plentiful in the 'cool' and 'hot' gardens favouring the buddleias and purple and red flowers. I was also pleased to see many bees and flies visiting these flowers. Our gardens are now an oasis in what is sometimes a desert of agricultural land where even the hedges seem to have fewer flowers than in past times.

At this time of year, we begin to hear the tawny owls, the female calling 'kee-wick' and the male making the more familiar 'hoot'. They tend to remain close to their home territory, defend it against intruders, and drive away their own young once they are fully mature. Apparently, the male owls 'hoot' in different keys, musically.

I like to hear them, especially on cold Winter nights when they are out hunting, for mice, rats and squirrels. In the past, owls have been unfairly persecuted, having been associated

LOOKING FORWARD TO A NEW YOU IN 2020?

What have you got planned for the darker winter days? Ever thought of trying out water-colour painting, photography or printing but not wanted to pay for a course without knowing what to expect? How about some dance or movement classes, hula hooping is joyful! Art, craft, photography, music making, knitting and more are all going to be available for you to try out for FREE at The Plough Arts Centre, Great Torrington, on Wednesday 2 October. All ages and abilities welcome.

The Plough is one of the partners in a new idea to look at using a wide range of activities to help people banish the blues and tackle loneliness.

The two Torrington GP Health Centres, Torridge Voluntary Services (TTVS), the Care Forum and The Plough are working together on a pilot to connect people with things they’d like to do but for some reason can’t manage. The problem could be transport, nothing local enough that appeals or being low and demotivated. The pilot is part of a new group called Torrington 100 – the 100 being the one hundred square miles and 16 villages around Torrington served by the two GP practices.

visiting all 16 villages and Great Torrington to look at what’s going on already and what people would like to be happening. They want to know what’s stopping people from getting involved too.

Torrington 100 will be using the day on 2 October to launch the project and they want to listen to your views. They are looking for people to help act as a local focal point too so if you are interested you can volunteer to be a contact for your village.

Taster Day Details: Wednesday 2 October 11:00 am– 4:00pm There will be 1hr classes during the whole day and you can drop in for a morning, lunch or afternoon session starting at 11.00am, 12:30 or 2pm. There will be a range of new courses planned for January to March so if you like what you try you can sign up, but there’s no obligation.

The day will be held at The Plough Arts Centre, Fore Street, Great Torrington.
