Torrential rain, gale force winds, flooding and loads of debris – exactly the same as last year. Apparently, 7 out of the last 10 Augusts have been extremely wet, so maybe we should be used to a drop of rain!!

CIDER WALK

It’s a great annual community event – the walk is around 4 miles taking in the amazing views (and cider) around the parish especially when the weather is favourable.

7th September Start @ 4:00pm Village Hall

We now know that we will be able to enjoy the colourful gardens and flower pots on our way around the parish while enjoying the various ciders along the route.

The annual Cider Walk around the Parish starting and finishing at the Village Hall.

For those of you who are new to the Parish – we take in four different stops (Three Gates Cross, Easton Moor Cross and Ward Lane) sampling different ciders. The last stop is at the Social Club.

Tickets will be available at the start of the walk in the Social Club. ÂŁ5 per person : U16 Free

The map is the “usual� route but we shall watch the weather and conditions (of Ward Lane) before confirming.

NOTES FROM THE PARISH COUNCIL At our last meeting, Cllr. Saywell from Devon County Council explained new system adopted

by DCC regarding assessing and/or repairing potholes. Devon Highways is setting up meetings with Highway representatives of individual parish councils to establish the needs of each parish.

As we are striving towards Quality Council status, we had to approve a Co-option Application Form. It is very straightforward, apart from asking some basic personal details, we would just like you to include a short personal statement of why you want to join. Please don’t be put off, if you have thought of applying for position of councillor!

Yarnscombe Parish Council elected Cllr. Cooke to be its Highway representative, Before midSeptember, Cllr. Cooke and one or two other councillors will set up meeting with Torrington Depot. Our councillors have good local knowledge, so they will be able to provide an upto-date picture of road conditions in Yarnscombe. If you know of a pothole that you think needs to be reported, please do so via DCC website or via phone. Any individual reports will be included in the final report.

THE BIG QUIZ IS BACK! Why not put a team together (maximum 6) and come on down to the Social Club to play for The Pig? Our fabulous trophy is waiting to be won once more and all money raised goes to charity – last year it was £500 for the Air Ambulance.

From October through to March there’ll be one quiz per month, on a Saturday at 8.15pm - £2 per person. You don’t have to turn up to every one as there’s a prize for each of the six nights.

There’ll be a reminder in October’s Eagle; meanwhile, the dates are: Does anyone fancy putting their brains, friendships, relationships etc through the mill again?

TRACTOR RUN - 11TH AUGUST I am very pleased to be able to report that the proceeds of the Tractor Run on Sunday 11th August amounted to a truly excellent £767, which will be put towards the Yarnscombe Church Rescue Group's improvement project.

This will make a very significant contribution to the cost of the necessary work, provisional plans for which can, at the time of writing, be seen in the church.

It is mentioned elsewhere in The Eagle (you’ll have to read it all to find out where!!) that the weather certainly played its part over the weekend of the tractor run – but a few of us brave (or crazy) Yarnscombe-ites enjoyed the spectacle of 20+ tractors of all ages, sizes and models leaving Bowling Green Farm to visit a number of other villages (with a slight detour enroute!).

Recognising that a considerable amount of work went into organising the Tractor Run and the meal afterwards, we offer our very sincere thanks to all who contributed food or other items, or who gave up their time and helped in any way; it is greatly appreciated, and we hope that all who took part in the event had an enjoyable time.

Food for over 50 people from all corners of the parish and further afield was served and enjoyed by us all.

Well done to all concerned (more pictures can be seen on the village Facebook page).

SUMMER QUIZ A big thank you to “The Outsiders”, the regular quiz league participants from Bideford who put together an additional quiz night on Saturday 17th August.

ISSUE 8 increase in others. So, we can see that climate change can have mixed effects, not all bad. I wish I could the same about the way we treat our environment. The scourge of plastic has affected many sea birds: some have died of starvation, the result of ingesting pieces of plastic which have blocked their gullets. Closer to home, I have noticed the lack of some of the more common birds. Skylarks are fewer than last year, as are swallows and martins. The yellowhammer has gone and I have not seen a whitethroat this year. On the other hand, this year, I have heard the song of the chiffchaff, the blackcap warbler and the willow warbler, so all is not lost. All these birds feed on insects, so we must do our utmost to encourage these creatures. Go easy on the insecticides - the birds will do the job, or other insects will.

NATURE NOTES According to the world's leading scientists, all the signs point to a global warming crisis in a few decades' time. Certainly, our weather is becoming more extreme; hotter and wetter, at times. In Britain, we have the advantage of being an island which ameliorates the worst effects of the extreme heat which affects continental countries, although we suffer from storms and floods. Melting ice caps and glaciers are already contributing to a significant rise in sea levels which will increasingly affect the lives of people in low-lying areas of the world, including those nearer home, such as the Netherlands, East Anglia and Essex.

These changes in climate have an effect on our wildlife, particularly fish which don't like even small changes in sea temperature. This has led to a lack of cod in southern waters and an increase in cooler seas further north. The sand eel, which provides a source of food for puffins and other sea birds, has shifted from the places where it used to breed and, thus, has caused a decline in some sea bird colonies, but an

A quick update regarding the fete from both the Village Hall & Social Club and the Parochial Church Council.

“On behalf of the Village Hall and Social Club Committee, can we thank everyone for supporting the village at the Summer Fete.

It was amazing to see so many people enjoying the stalls, activities and refreshments.

The Committee is very pleased to say that we raised £922 for the continued running costs and improvement of the Village Hall.

A big thank you should also go to those people behind the scenes who make events like the fete a success.”

YARNSCOMBE CHURCH RESCUE GROUP As promised in the August edition of “The Eagle,” the enlarged drawings showing the proposed work to the inside of our church have been put up on display on an easel inside the church, where everyone can look at them.

Do, please, have a look next time you are passing.

YCRG members are working hard to finalise our Application for Faculty Approval for these works, which will be submitted at the beginning of October.

You may have noticed recently around the village that there are posters on display advertising a photograph competition. The competition is to choose which 12 photographs of our lovely village will be made into a 2020 wall calendar, to be sold at the Village Christmas Fayre in November – this will be a really unusual and attractive Christmas present idea, as well as a must for every kitchen wall!

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the excellent lunch provided in John Edwards’s barn afterwards and the whole event raised over £700 for the work to the church building and its churchyard. Thank you all.

Ticket sales for the “100 Club” continue to go very well, with the first draw being at the Harvest Festival Supper in the Village Hall on 8 October.

Rev Gary spent the first eleven years of ordained ministry in the Welsh Diocese of St Asaph, before serving as rector of three village churches in Kent for the last nine years.

He is married to Helen and they are parents to two grown-up children and two younger (one primary school age and the other secondary).

Helen spent the first 18 years of her life in Devon and is delighted to be returning. They are moving, at least initially, into the Vicarage in High Bickington.

Gary says, “I am looking forward to the challenge of helping the churches of the Two Rivers Mission Community flourish. Jesus promised life in all its fullness to those who followed him.

Jesus is the most amazingly attractive person.

Who else turned water into wine, poked fun at the self-righteous with stories about planks in eyes, healed the sick and raised the dead? The task facing us is not without its challenges, but with Jesus we can face them with a sense of expectation and even fun.”

CLIMATE EMERGENCY – WHAT IS THE LOCAL PICTURE? Devon County Council (DCC) has declared a climate emergency.

It has committed to facilitating the reduction of Devon’s carbon emissions to net-zero by 2050 at the latest and has collaborated with other organisations in the county. Climate change is not just a global issue that will affect future generations in other parts of the world – it is happening now, and some of its effects can already be felt in Devon. We all contribute to climate change through our use of electricity, heat and vehicle fuels, and there are actions that we can all take – as individuals, as householders, at school and at work – to cut the emissions that contribute to climate change.

DCC reports its carbon footprint each year and has a target to reduce its own carbon emissions by 50% by 2030.

Its website, https://www.devon.gov.uk/energyandclimatecha nge, provides hints and tips about how energy use can be reduced by householders, businesses and schools as well as highlighting some of the actions being taken by community groups within Devon to reduce energy use and address climate change.

One action is a Climate Emergency Report Network. Each parish should appoint a person to report to the parish council at least once a year, and also be one of a network of such reporters from every parish/town in the area. That way, what is happening can be monitored and ideas can be shared with others. The reporter may be a councillor, but this is not a requirement. They may have some experience in one or more of the many areas affecting the climate emergency, and they may be supported by others. The annual report should not be limited to the actions of the council, as probably many ideas and projects come from local groups and individuals.

A one-page document is available which lists some of the issues that might be relevant for reporting in our area, but reports will obviously reflect the reporter’s interests and the needs of the parish or town.

If you are interested in volunteering to take on this role – younger people under 18 are very welcome to apply – please contact the Parish Clerk, Martina Dymond (560049 or clerk4yarnscombe@hotmail.co.uk) so that a network can begin to be formed. Such a network, meeting occasionally online as well as in persons, could really drive forward our responses to the Climate Emergency.

Parish and town councils throughout the UNESCO-designated Biosphere Reserve of Northern Devon, all the places whose waters drain to the north coast, of which Yarnscombe is a part of the Transition Zone, are having to face the climate emergency. They realise that many of the solutions lie with districts, with counties, and with national and international action, but they also feel that local people must be involved at local level. It is time to do something. But what?

The Ambulance service have details of our defibrillator, the location and the code to open the cabinet and should tell you when you ring them (the defibrillator is in the entrance to the Victory Hall).

The defibrillator has to be kept in a temperature-controlled cabinet to prevent deterioration. If you need to access the defibrillator the code to the cabinet is
