Believe it or not, July is the month of the Summer Fete and Open Air Theatre production on Saturday 13th July on the playing field.

All the details are just inside this issue of The Eagle. It would be great to see you all having a fun day with your neighbours from the village and surrounding parishes.

A lot of work is carried out “behind the scenes” for these community events, please help us and show our thanks and support.

On Sunday 14th July there will be a Pet Service being held at St Andrews Church from 11:00am. Everyone is welcome.

VILLAGER NEWS Many of you around the village will have known Andrew Lynch.

Sadly, he passed away early in June after a long illness. Andrew very kindly installed the new windows and fascia/guttering at the village hall over the last few years. The condolences of the Village Hall & Social Club Committee have been sent to his family and friends at this sad time.

DOGS IN YARNSCOMBE Apologies for repeating these pleas, but with the Summer Fete just around the corner and the likelihood of a large number of people visiting our wonderful village, we all need to ensure these visitors are made welcome.

But the actions (or not) of the few can and do spoil it for the many.

The most obvious problem is irresponsible owners not cleaning up after their dogs. It’s not pleasant having to walk around mess while strolling around the village.

The message is simple …………

There is also a continuing issue with some dogs barking throughout the village for no real reason. Residents of the village can and have reported these issues. Owners can be fined for both of the above.

NOTES FROM THE PARISH COUNCIL

Community to identify the roads that need the most attention. A replacement for Darryl Jagger, the Highways Neighbourhood Officer, has now been appointed. Her name is Sarah Campbell and she can be contacted via sarah.m.campbell@devon.gov.uk . for run of the mill defects/problems please continue to use the website to report them but Sarah will be able to help with the more complex issues.

At our last Annual Parish Council Meeting on 22nd May 2019, Cllr. Brice was elected as chairman and Cllr. Martin was elected as vice-chairman. We are grateful for their and all remaining councillors’ ongoing commitment to the council. There is still one vacancy for the position of councillor. We welcome enquiries from people of all backgrounds, maybe you are a long-standing resident or have only recently moved in.

Martin Caddy was able to provide an update regarding Herds Lane: Planings should become available between 4th and 10th July, it will be a night drop and contractor will come in first thing to spread. Dwellings will be notified once delivery is confirmed.

The Two Rivers and Three Moors Ward to which Yarnscombe belongs, is now represented by two district councillors, Michael Clarke (councillor.clarke@torridge.gov.uk 01769 560194) and Rosemary Lock (councillor.lock@torridge.gov.uk), they will alternate their visits to our council meetings.

artificial flies. The Jay was also persecuted by game keepers because it takes other birds eggs and nestlings. However, it likes acorns and sometimes buries them for further use, so it is probably responsible for a few young oak trees.

Here's hoping for a drier and warmer July!

Flaming June! someone once called it, but, at the moment, it is really cold - and wet. This must be having an effect on the insect life. There are plenty of flowers in the hedges: campions, buttercups, clover, bramble, honeysuckle, stitchwort, herb Robert, etc., but very few bees, except the hardier bumblebees, and a few flies.

I have seen no butterflies recently, and I expect that the few that are about have been snapped up by birds trying to feed their chicks. Over the last few summers, I have noticed that there have been fewer small tortoiseshell butterflies and I have learned of one reason why this might be so.

Apparently, a new species of parasitic fly, Sturmia bella has spread northwards from Europe and has reduced the numbers of small tortoiseshell by half, within a decade. It does this by laying its eggs on the nettle leaves on which the butterfly caterpillars feed. The eggs are ingested by the caterpillars and the larvae, in turn, devour the caterpillars from within. Nasty, but nature often is!

The Village Hall & Social Club Committee would like to take this opportunity of thanking for the work he has undertaken for the Social Club over the years as Bar Manager.

The present weather seems to affected the swallows who appeared late this year, but now have disappeared from my local patch. Perhaps they were in transit to somewhere further north, because their range covers the whole of the British Isles. Farms are their favourite places to nest because there are plenty of barns and old buildings with easy access to ledges and rafters, and this is where I have seen them. Some birds are doing well, in spite of the poor conditions.

The Wrens have reared their first brood which are now flitting in and out of the hedges.

Goldfinches are also in small 'charms' which is the collective noun for them. They are thriving as a consequence of people feeding their garden birds, so please keep it up.

A bird which rarely seen, because it tends to keep close to woods and copses, is the Jay. I happened to spot one recently, and admired its beautiful plumage; pinkish-brown body, white rump and black tail, with the striking black, blue and white wing coverts. The coverts used to be highly prized by fly-fishermen in decorating

CHURCH THOUGHTS Before we moved to North Devon, two years ago, we lived in Bristol for twenty eight years.

Our children were born and grew up there and can all speak ‘Brizzle’. If you are going to live in a city it’s a pretty good place to live and it is certainly easier for the taxi of Mum and Dad. At the beginning of June I had to go back for a meeting and I realised how noisy it was and how smelly and dirty the air was. We never noticed this when we lived there because we were acclimatized to it but going back from the quiet and the clean, though sometimes fragrant, air of North Devon it was very obvious.

As a nation we have just celebrated the seventyfifth anniversary of D-Day. The soldiers who fought there did so for our freedom. If they could see their country now, a bit like me returning to Bristol, what would they think? Would they be amazed, delighted or horrified by the huge changes that have taken place since their time, in technology, culture and society.

Christians are to look at everyone and everything through the lens of God’s love. If you are going away on holiday in the next few weeks you will have the privilege of seeing somewhere with fresh eyes and perhaps return home with new insights.

Harracott WI will be hosting a charity bingo evening on 9th August 2019 with eyes down at 7:30pm in aid of Age Concern, Barnstaple.

Everyone is welcome to come along for an evening of fun and to raise money for this worthwhile cause.

CIDER WALK

7th September The annual Cider Walk around the Parish starting and finishing at the Village Hall.

For those of you who are new to the Parish – we take in four different stops (Three Gates Cross, Easton Moor Cross and Ward Lane) sampling different ciders. The last stop is at the Social Club.

It’s a great annual community event – the walk is around 4 miles taking in the amazing views (and cider) around the parish especially when the weather is favourable.

We now know that we will be able to enjoy the colourful gardens and flower pots on our way around the parish while enjoying the various ciders along the route.

The start time is to be confirmed nearer the time (but in the past it’s been around 4:00pm) There will be a charge for the walk together with a separate cost for a pasty when we get back to the Social Club.

CURRY NIGHT Yum Yum. These two words are the only ones needed to describe the amazing food by Joel and Pascal of Gary Masala earlier in June.

They decorated the committee room in the village hall and we were transported to a place far warmer than Yarnscombe!

All four courses were home made and were delicious.

RUBBISH DATES – JULY 2019

DEFRIBILLATOR

Dial 999 if you suspect someone is havinac arrest.

The Ambulance service have details of our defibrillator, the location and the code to open the cabinet and should tell you when you ring them (the defibrillator is in the entrance to the Victory Hall).

The defibrillator has to be kept in a temperature-controlled cabinet to prevent deterioration. If you need to access the defibrillator the code to the cabinet is

This timetable only relates to those properties served by Torridge District Council (there are 6 properties in the parish

(four zeros) followed by the Tick

covered by North Devon District Council which has a different rubbish collection timetable)

This will unlock the cabinet.

The defibrillator is automated and can be used by anyone and is self-explanatory once you open the lid to the defibrillator and turn it on - please listen carefully and follow the voice instructions. (Do not use in wet conditions)

We are waiting on a decision about the future of the Mobile Library Service from Devon County Council after a consultation exercise earlier this year. As this is the case these timetables are provisional and may change, but we will advertise well in advance if they do.

To avoid disappointment, please don’t forget the deadline for submission of any articles for The Eagle is the 15th of each month.

Anything submitted after this date can’t be included in The Eagle.
