NOTES FROM THE PARISH COUNCIL

HARRACOTT WI

Due to an uncontested election, the parish council remains largely unchanged.

Many thanks to Cllrs. Brice, Cooke, Farr, Martin, Pengilley and Williams for standing again.

We have, however, one vacancy to fill, as Rachel Stephens didn’t stand again. Rachel joined the council in June 2016 and acted as the Playing Field representative. We would like to thank her for her input and wish her well for the future.

On district level our ward has now two representatives. Congratulations to Michael Clarke and Rosemary Locke, both representing the Conservative Party.

Harracott Hall Sunday 30th June

Michael Clarke has a sign-making business in High Bickington, where he has been living for 35 years. He is a volunteer cook at the Freedom Centre in Barnstaple and describes himself as a “novice councillor”. He has said that he would strive to be approachable and, as he is living in a farming community, he would be sympathetic to countryside issues, but consideration would need to be exercised from all members of community.

Rosemary Lock lives in Dolton and has been working within Torridge District Council for the last twelve years, eight of them on the planning committee. She is also town clerk for Hatherleigh.

Yarnscombe belongs to the Two Rivers & Three Moors Ward and Cllrs. Clarke and Locke would alternate visits to parishes in order to represent them effectively.

CARE FOR THE COUNTRYSIDE Last month we had the well supported Litter Pick (organised by Jackie & Phil) where we picked up over 20 bags of rubbish.

Devon Local Nature Partnership are running initiatives throughout the year to encourage us all to help our community environment. Please take a look at their website to see what you can do to make a difference.

It is, therefore, very disappointing that two weeks later, along a stretch of road that had been cleared, we saw enough rubbish to probably fill two more bags.

Unfortunately some of the recycled containers do fly out of the rubbish lorries on the Fridays while they are on their rounds, but there are road users that feel it’s acceptable to throw their rubbish into the hedges and onto the roads.

YARNCOMBE CHURCH RESCUE GROUP Raising money for a charitable purpose is always hard work but what if by donating to the good cause and the warm feeling that itself gives you, you have the added bonus of a chance of winning something for yourself?

Whilst we can’t give you a guarantee, it’s a potential win/win situation!

In this month’s Eagle you’ll find a Flyer for The 100 Club which we’re setting up to help fund the maintenance and all the developments planned for St Andrew’s Church and churchyard. Buying a ticket will place you in the draw for one of the quarterly cash prizes which are well worth winning. Tickets will be available from the beginning of June at £10 each which will then be placed in each of the 4 annual draws which we are hoping to make on major village occasions like the Harvest Supper, Christmas Fair etc. To raise your chances, you can buy as many tickets as you like confident that your contribution is going solely to the benefit of the Church building and the churchyard. You don’t even have to live in the village as it’s open to anyone over 16 so make yourself feel even better by getting friends and family to buy a ticket as well. Extra Flyers will be available in the Church.

I know it’s self-evident, but the more we sell, the more work we can do! So, don’t throw the Flyer into the bin, but please read it and make that contribution and you’ll be helping to ensure the continued existence and improvement of St Andrew’s.

Furthermore, at a date not yet fixed, but sometime in August, John Edwards and Peter Jeffries are organizing a tractor rally from Bowling Green Farm with refreshments to follow.

The date and details will be advertised in The Eagle and elsewhere, so all you tractor owners, start polishing up your machines! It promises to be an impressive show!

They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit ……….

The disciples became a church on the day of Pentecost; when God sent visible signs of his presence. The Holy Spirit, the mysterious 3rd person of the Trinity can be hard to understand. The work of the Spirit is as mysterious and invisible as the wind.

The way we often take the Holy Spirit for granted resembles how we overlook the importance of the wind. Wind itself is invisible but we feel it and see its effects. The Holy Spirit is invisible but active and powerful around us. We are told that the promised gift of the Holy Spirit did not come to them as a gentle breeze, the disciples heard ‘a sound like the blowing of a violent wind’.

The Holy Spirit also came as tongues of fire, individual flames over the heads of the gathered disciples. Fire is mesmerising wherever it is seen, capturing and holding our attention. It can speak of comfort and security, light in the darkness. A focal point that attracts our attention and enables us to find our way. The fire of the Holy Spirit is all these things and more. However, we cannot escape the fact that fire is also destructive and dangerous, as many of you know I’ve had first - hand experience of the destructiveness of fire when our house burnt down four years ago. So, should we be afraid of the Holy Spirit?

In C.S. Lewis’ story of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe; Susan asks Mr Beaver if Aslan is safe. Mr Beaver replies, ‘Course he isn’t safe, but he’s good’.

Well I believe that The Holy Spirit isn’t safe – but he’s good! Unlike the disciples, we may not have the extraordinary experience of that day of Pentecost but, I pray that you will recognise The Holy Spirit at work in your life and the lives of those around you.

SUMMER IN YARNSCOMBE

7th September The annual Cider Walk around the Parish starting and finishing at the Village Hall.

Saturday 13th July

For those of you who are new to the Parish – we take in four different stops (Three Gates Cross, Easton Moor Cross and Ward Lane) sampling different ciders. The last stop is at the Social Club.

The days activities are being finalised all the time.

If you have any ideas or want to be involved, let the Village Hall & Social Club Committee know.

It’s a great annual community event – the walk is around 4 miles taking in the amazing views (and cider) around the parish especially when the weather is favourable.

We now know that we will be able to enjoy the colourful gardens and flower pots on our way around the parish while enjoying the various ciders along the route.

More details will follow in the Summer.

NATURE NOTES The recent demonstrations in London have sparked a long-overdue debate about climate change and humanity's effects on the planet.

They affect not only our welfare but the lives of every creature, from the smallest insect to the largest animal on land or in the seas. I have been observing nature for well over half a century and it saddens me to note the decline in once common species of birds, such as larks, swallows, swifts and cuckoos.

forgotten. But, I am lucky; in addition to my garden birds which I mentioned last month, I can add the Willow Warbler. I still haven't seen any Swallows or Martins although I gather that they have arrived. I hope the weather keeps fine for them and for you.

The last time I heard the call of the cuckoo was maybe nine years ago, on Exmoor, where there were several male birds competing for the attention of the females, along the valley of the River Barle.

Each bird has an extraordinary life, beginning when it hatches in the nest of a strange, unrelated bird, such as a much smaller Pipit or Warbler. The nestling then heaves it siblings, either as eggs or nestlings, out of the nest, and becomes the sole charge of its foster parents who care for it until it is ready to fly. Indeed, they will continue to feed this monster even after it has left the nest. With no one to guide it, the young Cuckoo sets out on its long journey to sub-Saharan Africa, weeks after its poor parents have already left. This shows that each young cuckoo has its journey programmed into its brain - an amazing fact. The same Cuckoo will return, the following Spring, to the same area in which it was raised and, if possible, select the same species of foster parent in whose nests to lay its eggs. It is possible that the disappearance of host species is responsible for the scarcity of Cuckoos. Maybe, some still remain on Exmoor.

I hope so.

The RSPB Reserve at West Sedgemoor is also a place where they may be seen.

Sedgemoor is the place where, I understand, the Nightingale may still be heard. I haven't heard that immense pleasure since a holiday in south western France some years ago. The thrill of listening to that superb song on a warm, quiet evening in the countryside is something never

ISSUE 5 tournament, defeating George Main and Elliott James on the way.

YARNSCOMBE SMBC This season the club has had a very successful year! Not only winning the evening triples league, but winning the Tony Stephens Knockout Trophy as well! We were unfortunate in the Alan Wright 10s competition and were unable to compete further as we were struggling to field enough players.

George Main won the North Devon Singles this year in a very close final, only managing to claim victory with the very last bowl of the match and beating fellow club player Graham James on the way to the final. George Main and Elliott James were both part of the St George’s cup, South Select squad, competing against the north of England for the trophy. Raising over £3000 for charity and bringing the trophy back to the south with a very convincing win.

All in all, Yarnscombe SMBC have had an excellent season with great success!

Other successes for the club this season, Tony Main was part of the North Devon representative squad who went on to win the Area Challenge against the rest of Devon. Elliott James and Michael Avery both represented the county playing in the inter-County Championships.

Elliott James proved himself to be a top player in the world coming close to winning multiple world singles events and narrowly missing out on a place in the English World Cup squad, he’s done brilliantly this season and has represented our club exquisitely!

We have even managed to recruit a few new players, however, we are always hoping for more people to come and give the sport a try and join in with the club’s hopeful success in the future!

RUBBISH DATES – JUNE 2019

DEFRIBILLATOR

Dial 999 if you suspect someone is havinac arrest.

The Ambulance service have details of our defibrillator, the location and the code to open the cabinet and should tell you when you ring them (the defibrillator is in the entrance to the Victory Hall).

The defibrillator has to be kept in a temperature-controlled cabinet to prevent deterioration. If you need to access the defibrillator the code to the cabinet is

This will unlock the cabinet.

The defibrillator is automated and can be used by anyone and is self-explanatory once you open the lid to the defibrillator and turn it on - please listen carefully and follow the voice instructions. (Do not use in wet conditions)

If you do need to use the defibrillator, please let us know on 01805 624834 as we will need to replace parts and ensure it is working.
