NOTE FROM THE EDITOR This issue’s deadline has arrived over the Easter weekend, which has meant a four-day weekend – most welcome for some of us.

It has also been one of the hottest Easter Bank Holiday weekends in years apparently. Crazy to think a week before, it was (feeling) freezing!

During the weekend some of us took part in the organised litter pick around the village – it was particularly warm to say the least!!.

Here's some of the gang collecting material over Easter - Sue, Martina, Sharron, Ian & Phil.

Thanks also to Richard & Ali and Fraser & Martine who helped collect on other days.

You may have seen some strange folk in high vis vests rooting through the hedges recently. This wasn't Yarnscombe's version of 'gillet jeune' but the village litter pick.

To coincide with Keep Britain Tidy's Great British Spring Clean a hardy group of us got together over the Easter weekend to collect litter from the hedges and verges around the parish lanes. Torridge District Council kindly provided litter picking equipment and agreed to collect the rubbish at the end. We gathered 20 bags of rubbish, a disappointing amount given that on first sight the lanes look reasonably clean!

The majority (as might have been expected) was plastic, so it's good to have removed this from the environment. There was also a large amount of energy drink cans and wrapping material. Some of this may have been lost from the recycling lorries but not all. All this material can be recycled if it goes in the bins not the hedges.

Thanks to #LitterHeroes who took part or offered their support. We are considering doing another litter pick in the autumn but hopefully we'll need

ISSUE 4 Naturally, this would have a direct impact of parishioners living next to playing field. So, we are asking residents of neighbouring properties and all other parishioners, if they support or object such an undertaking. More detailed information can be found on www.daat.org , the Air Ambulance website. It is worth mentioning, that such a site would (hopefully) only be used on very rare occasions and if it needed to be used, it would be for the benefit of a parishioner.

NOTES FROM THE PARISH COUNCIL Only six nominations were received for roles as parish councillor, which means all present councillors are re-elected in an uncontested election. The remaining vacancy will have to be filled after 2nd May 2019, it will be advertised in due course.

Also in May, apart from holding our ordinary council meeting, we will also hold our Annual PC Meeting and the Annual Parish Meeting. The latter is your chance to give us your views and opinions on any issue you feel is relevant to the parish. We always welcome members of the public during the course of the year, but the Parish Meeting is your chance to provide us with an insight of what the village community wants and/or needs.

The Council is exploring the possibility of using the playing field as a potential Air Ambulance night landing site. RECYCLING Leading on from Jackie’s item on the village Litter Pick, it seems a good idea to remind everyone about their recycling.

Torridge District Council can only recycle our (not black) plastic, glass, paper, cardboard, etc if it is sorted by us prior to collection. It has been noticed that some of the boxes aren’t being collected as the recycling is mixed. You may even have a Rejection Notice attached to your uncollected recycling.

Also, we need to renew our garden waste collection service by the end of May.

If you need replacement paper and cardboard bags or recycling boxes, you can collect them from the council offices at Riverbank House in Bideford or complete the online form www.torridge.gov.uk/article/15150/Order-anew-Recycling-Box-or-Bag

Any green wheelie bin not displaying the sticker won’t be collected.

If we all bear these notes in mind, an Autumn litter pick may not be needed.

It can be a little confusing sometimes to work out what items need to go into which recepticle, so we’ve included a list to help.

VOLUME 36 YARNCOMBE CHURCH GROUP - Update

ISSUE 4 Tim Harris and Anne Prowse also attended the last meeting of the Parochial Church Council to brief them on our progress and the next steps.

They were able to answer all the questions posed and the PCC are now fully up to speed.

RESCUE

Finally, to further bolster our available funds we are setting up a 100 Club which we hope everyone in the village and beyond will support by buying a ticket or tickets so as to participate in what we expect to be 4 draws each year with a probable first prize of ÂŁ50 and 3 or 4 lesser valued prizes. Full details, cost of tickets etc. will be in the next Eagle. This will enable everyone supporting it to feel they have a direct and personal interest in the continued maintenance and development of our historic and beautiful church.

The lack of an update in the last Eagle might make you think that nothing much has been happening. Nothing could be further from the truth!

The next few months promise to be extremely busy!

At the beginning of February, we hosted an important meeting with 5 members of the Exeter Diocesan Advisory Committee in company with our Architect at which our Statement of Significance containing our outline plan for the intended work was discussed. We wanted guidance as to which aspects of the plan would be possible and would be likely to receive their support when our application for Faculty Permission was lodged.

PAROCHIAL CHURCH COUNCIL

It was a most useful, interesting and helpful visit and has resulted in our modifying our aspirations somewhat in both scale and extent which should make fundraising rather less daunting and that the work to be done being more attractive to a wider range of builders which could help in getting really competitive quotes. It would also allow the aspects of work to be undertaken as funding for each phase became available.

Having reached agreement on this we have now been able to instruct our Architect, John Alexander, to go ahead immediately and prepare the necessary plans, drawings and costings so that in order of priority we can apply for Faculty Permission, then for grant funding and seek tenders for the work. This is now getting down to the really exciting bit!

A meeting of the Parochial Church Council will be held on Tuesday 21st May at 7:30pm in the Victory Hall.

Alas, our excellent Treasurer wishes to relinquish his post and, therefore, we are looking for someone to replace him. He/she would not be required to be a PCC member or a churchgoer. We are also in search of someone to take up the task of mowing the churchyard.

The visiting monarch, who could not see any walls, eventually asked the king, 'where are these great walls of Sparta about which you boast so much?' The king pointed to his troops and said, 'These are the walls of Sparta, every man is a brick!' Have you ever thought of yourself as a brick (Living stone) essential to the building of God's Church, needing each other? That's how God sees us, therefore, let's ask Him to make us bricks (living stones) together so that those around us will see the living church and want to know Jesus for themselves.

However, Peter writes in the Bible (1 Peter 2) that like Jesus we too are, or should be, 'living stones.' Stones (people) that are alive to God. Alive to all that He wants to do in our lives. Alive to one another with the purpose of being built together into the community of God, which is the 'Church.' Alive to His Spirit dwelling in us. Alive to the world which looks at us and hopefully, sees Jesus. Sounds great doesn't it. But let's be honest, sometimes that not what others see.

CIDER WALK

7th September The annual Cider Walk around the Parish starting and finishing at the Village Hall.

For those of you who are new to the Parish – we take in four different stops (Three Gates Cross, Easton Moor Cross and Ward Lane) sampling different ciders. The last stop is at the Social Club.

It’s a great annual community event – the walk is around 4 miles taking in the amazing views (and cider) around the parish especially when the weather is favourable.

More details will follow in the Summer.

NATURE NOTES

Water Deer. In the Cairngorms, there is a semiwild herd of Reindeer, which ceased to be a native species sometime in the Mesolithic period.

It was mid-April, with a cold east wind blowing across the bridleway. The Larks had fallen silent and I noticed that one of their usual haunts had been ploughed up, and the remainder of the field had been weed-killed.

But there was movement in the hedge and a burst of energetic song; a tiny Wren was busy, as usual. The male builds several nests and the one that the female chooses is then lined with feathers and used. She lays between five and eight eggs, and second broods are often laid.

The Wren probably only lives for two or three years so everything it does is packed into as little time as possible. In winter it is obliged to hunt incessantly for insects, spiders and larvae because of its very small size which is more difficult to keep warm. Scientists have done experiments to slow down the sound of its song which has shown it to be as melodious as that of the Blackbird. It lives at twice or thrice the pace of us humans, as do many animals such as mice and moles.

The moles have been active along the grassy edge of the road, marking it at intervals with the results of their excavations, in the form of molehills. They need a regular supply of worms to keep going, which they seem to find here, rather than in adjoining fields which have been cultivated, rolled flat and sown with grass seed.

What this has done to the surface worm population one can only guess but I would say that it has probably decreased, judging by the lack of molehills.

I was pleased to see, this morning, six Red Deer grazing in the pasture next to the wood. I reckon that they are probably hinds because the stags tend to go off by themselves while their antlers are in the process of regrowth. Fortunately, we have deer of many varieties roaming our countryside, from natives such as Red Deer and Roe Deer to Fallow Deer, reintroduced by the Normans, and more recent introductions such as Sika Deer, Muntjac and, in Norfolk, the Chinese

'My' Song Thrush continues to sing every morning and has been joined by the Blackbird, Chiff-chaff, Chaffinch, Great Tit, Robin, Dunnock, Wood Pigeon and others, including a recently arrived Blackcap Warbler, The wind has veered to the south so we should begin to see and hear other Summer migrants: Swallows, Martins, Whitethroats and Willow Warblers.

The Wren The wren is a family of mostly small, brownish, passerine birds in the (mainly) New World family Troglodytidae.

The family includes 88 species divided into 19 genera. Only the Eurasian wren occurs in the Old World, where in Anglophone regions, it is commonly known simply as the "wren", as it is the originator of the name. The name wren has been applied to other, unrelated birds, particularly the New Zealand wrens (Acanthisittidae) and the Australian wrens (Maluridae).

Most wrens are small and rather inconspicuous, except for their loud and often complex songs.

Notable exceptions are the relatively large members of the genus Campylorhynchus, which can be quite bold in their behaviour. Wrens have short wings that are barred in most species, and they often hold their tails upright. As far as is known, wrens are primarily insectivorous, eating insects, spiders, and other small arthropods, but many species also eat vegetable matter and some take small frogs and lizards.

NORTH DEVON HOSPICE NIGHT WALK 2019

Newton Tracey Cricket Club welcome new members for the new season. By the time you read this we will have already started. We offer a good range of types of cricket to suit all abilities and opportunities for youth.

Taking place this year on Saturday 18th May, Nightwalk is a ladies-only walk along the Tarka Trail, with over 1,000 women stepping out to support the hospice.

Nightwalk 2019, on Saturday 18th May, will have a “back to the “80’s” theme with related party areas and entertainment on the Trail, including 80s dance routines (at Fremington Quay), Babycham stations, 80s stiltwalkers, Hopps and Chappell at Barnstaple and Bideford finishes, and more.

The defibrillator is automated and can be used by anyone and is self-explanatory once you open the lid to the defibrillator and turn it on - please listen carefully and follow the voice instructions. (Do not use in wet conditions)

If you do need to use the defibrillator, please let us know on 01805 624834 as we will need to replace parts and ensure it is working.

Monday (unless specified) mornings between 11:00am and 11:40am 10th May 2019 (FRIDAY) 3rd June 2019 We are waiting on a decision about the future of the Mobile Library Service from Devon County Council after a consultation exercise earlier this year. As this is the case these timetables are provisional and may change, but we will advertise well in advance if they do.
