NOTE FROM THE EDITORS It seems that each issue of The Eagle starts off in true British fashion by discussing the weather.

From the “flurry of February” to the “howling winds of March” with the storms Freya, Gareth and more recently Hannah. It has been relentless. With these winds came the torrential rain and confusing temperatures.

To top it all, our farmers are incredibly busy with lambing and calving together with preparing the fields for crops. With the rain it has meant the mud from the fields is being brought out onto the roads making them, at times, treacherous.

We would urge all residents and their visitors to remember this when driving in and around the village and be aware of the ever changing road conditions.

THE QUIZ LEAGUE: SEASON 3 ROUND 6 CHAMPIONS: Barton Hall The final quiz of the season and the overall title were won by the splendid Barton Hall who took everything available to them on the night. They are now the proud keepers of The Pig!

Mac-Tastic!

Another well supported tribute band held in the village hall with over 200 tickets sold. A huge thank you to everyone behind the scenes who made all the arrangements, set up the hall (and cleaned up the following morning) for the band and served behind the bar. They thoroughly enjoyed playing for us.

So, life can return to normal – no more checking the diary to see which Saturday night is quiz night; no more having to be aware of everything in the news the week before; no more having to drag oneself away from the cosy fire, and TV, to venture into the cold and wet to answer a load of questions!

The Chain was the first iconic song of an evening of well known songs from Fleetwood Mac ending with Go Your Own Way and Everywhere.

To everyone who took part, congratulations for getting through to the end; a huge thank you for turning up to have your brains pummelled, and most of all, for raising the magnificent sum of £500 to go to the Devon Air Ambulance. Enjoy the summer.

and hedgerows throughout the country, where their song is the signature tune of Summer.

The song thrush is singing outside my back door; he has kept it up, during daylight hours, for probably a month, only pausing to look for something to eat. It is an amazing display of energy and I hope that he has managed to attract a mate to build her mud-lined nest in a suitable spot in the garden. They start nesting early in the year and can raise two or three broods which they feed largely on worms. the thrush's song is noticeable for its variety of repeated notes which cheer up the last of the dead Winter days and heralds the arrival of Spring. It is one of my favourite birds but, sadly, like many other species, it has suffered a decline in numbers in recent years.

I often wish I had a pair of night-vision binoculars to see what happens in the garden and fields, after sunset. A recent programme, on television, showed what was going on, in the dark, on the outskirts of a town in the south east of England, where permanent pasture meets the built-up area. The number of animals spotted was very interesting: mice, rabbits, hares, badgers, foxes, deer, to name but a few plus bats and owls. I have a cheeky rabbit in my garden which sits on the lawn chewing thoughtfully. One of its offspring met its fate recently. Its half-eaten carcass was by my car, probably the prey of a stray cat - another night prowler!

A rather more reticent, unremarkable bird has started to sing more often. This is the hedge sparrow, or dunnock, which has a musical, high-pitched song constantly repeated.

It is nothing like a house sparrow, being slimmer in build, with a thin beak, and feeding mainly on insects and spiders, although it will eat seeds in the Winter. Although dunnocks will pair up to build their nests and raise their chicks, the females are not averse to having extra-marital meetings with other males and the reverse is true with the males who mate with as many females as possible, thus passing on their genes to future generations.

The Dunnock A European robin-sized bird, the Dunnock typically measures 13.5–14 cm (5.3–5.5 in) in length. It possesses a streaked back, somewhat resembling a small house sparrow.

Like that species, the dunnock has a drab appearance which may have evolved to avoid predation. It is brownish underneath, and has a fine pointed bill. Adults have a grey head, and both sexes are similarly coloured. Unlike any similar sized small brown bird, Dunnocks exhibit frequent wing flicking, especially when engaged in territorial disputes or when competing for mating rights.

The main call of the dunnock is a shrill, persistent tseep along with a high trilling note, which betrays the bird's otherwise inconspicuous presence. The song is rapid, thin and tinkling, a sweet warble which can be confused with that of the Eurasian wren, but is shorter and weaker.

As I write, it is the vernal equinox when the length of the day matches that of the night and Spring really begins. About this time, if I listen carefully, I should expect to hear the song of the chiff-chaff, a small olive green warbler which sings its own name. This spends the Winter in North Africa or southern Europe but, if we have mild weather, some birds will stay in this country, mainly in the South West. They nest in gardens

CIDER WALK

7th September

CALLING ALL OLD AND YOUNG OF YARNSCOMBE

The annual Cider Walk around the Parish starting and finishing at the Village Hall.

A TIME TO LET YOUR CREATIVE TALENTS LOOSE

For those of you who are new to the Parish – we take in four different stops (Three Gates Cross, Easton Moor Cross and Ward Lane) sampling different ciders. The last stop is at the Social Club.

As many of you know we have had a scarecrow festival for a few years although last year we had a break. I would love to hear from all of you on your thoughts for this September. Could it be scarecrow, decorate a wellie or bucket or any other ideas would be great. It is lovely to combine both the infamous cider walk with the showing of our villagers hidden talents. Whatever we decide they could be displayed at the home or if we decide on something smaller perhaps in the hall car park on the date of the cider walk.

It’s a great annual community event – the walk is around 4 miles taking in the amazing views (and cider) around the parish especially when the weather is favourable.

More details will follow in the Summer.

NOTES FROM THE PARISH COUNCIL YARNSCOMBE PARISH COUNCIL. This link is to download the Parish Council Nomination Pack.

On 2nd May 2019, elections will be held to fill posts for district, town and parish councillors.

Cllr. Stephens has decided that, due to commitments at work, she will not stand again.

She joined the council in June 2016 and took on the role as Playing Field representative.

We are grateful for the time she has given to the council and wish her all the best for the future.

POT HOLES The roads around the parish are becoming worn and in turn are developing more potholes.

There are certain criteria set by Devon Highways for the potholes to be filled in.

They will only repair potholes that are deeper than 40mm, wider than 300mm and have a vertical edge!

Some parishioners had commented that kick board along playing field fence spoiled their view and that children were not using it.

Consensus among councillors was that if it is not used, it may as well be removed, but a potential other site (at bottom of hedge) should also be considered.

Your views, including the views of children and young people, are welcome. If the kick board is not welcome and/or needed, it can be removed.

Keep Britain Tidy (KBT) have launched the Great British Spring Clean running from 22 March - 23 April 2019, to inspire 500,000 people to join forces and collect and safely dispose of litter in their local area.

I'm sure most of you will have noticed that sadly even in our little rural village we're not immune from the problem and there is an increasing amount of litter around our lanes and verges.

So, I've signed up to the KBT campaign and have pledged to hold a litter pick in Yarnscombe and I'm looking for volunteers to join me. Torridge District Council are providing us with litter picking equipment including gloves, high vis vests, hand sanitisers, bags and litter picker hand tools for free, so all you need bring is yourself and any willing friends and family too!

Jesus Christ is risen today.

Alleluia I would like to wish each and every one of you a very happy Easter. This is a time of year for great rejoicing, because we celebrate Christ conquering death, our ultimate enemy. The odd thing in writing about Easter now is that I am writing this article during Lent and just after the shootings in Christchurch, New Zealand where the world mourns the loss of so many innocent lives. And yet outside my window, although it is raining today, the daffodils are looking resplendent, if not a bit soggy and the buds are beginning to appear on the trees. And when the sun shines, there is a real warmth to it. This is God in creation bringing new life into being. Life and death run along side by side, this is the tension we all live with. And yet in the life and death of Jesus on the cross, Jesus shows us another way.

Jesus has offered us a life in all its fullness.

Through the cross we are offered forgiveness and redemption. Having recently walked the Via Dolorosa, the Way of the Cross, in Jerusalem that follows the last walk of Jesus, I get a sense of what it must have been like for Jesus. Jesus wept for Jerusalem and for the world. For now, the world cannot escape pain and suffering but we do have the chance to make a difference. ‘Jesus offers us a different way; to face the truth of pain and loss and to be moved with pity and allow that love to shape our lives and actions.� This is the life we are called to imitate in our walk of faith. So, let us rejoice and give thanks that Jesus Christ is risen today and every day. Alleluia.

The Ambulance service have details of our defibrillator, the location and the code to open the cabinet and should tell you when you ring them (the defibrillator is in the entrance to the Victory Hall).

We are waiting on a decision about the future of the Mobile Library Service from Devon County Council after a consultation exercise earlier this year. As this is the case these timetables are provisional and may change, but we will advertise well in advance if they do.
