NOTE FROM THE EDITORS February certainly arrived with a flurry.

First torrential hail (about an inch deep in my garden) at 4:30am! Then the snow arrived in parts of the parish.

It was very peculiar driving Barnstaple via Langley where it complete white blanket from Lower onwards.

It is with sadness that we have learnt of the passing of Gill Easterbrook. She was involved in the Huntshaw Bangers & Mash which was cancelled prior to Christmas due to her ill health. Our sympathies are sent to her family and friends.

On a personal note, I am sure you will all join me in sending our sympathies to Pat and family following the sad news of her sister’s passing following a long illness.

At the time of writing The Eagle, we are looking forward to The Fleetwood Mac Songbook playing at the Village Hall – reports and photos will follow next issue.

CIDER WALK

7th September SUMMER IN YARNSCOMBE

The annual Cider Walk around the Parish starting and finishing at the Village Hall.

Over recent years, we have had scarecrows in the village to celebrate Summer in the Community.

For those of you who are new to the Parish – we take in four different stops (Three Gates Cross, Easton Moor Cross and Ward Lane) sampling different ciders. The last stop is at the Social Club.

It’s a great annual community event – the walk is around 4 miles taking in the amazing views (and cider) around the parish especially when the weather is favourable.

THE QUIZ LEAGUE: SEASON 3 ROUND 5

DENYS CROCKER Margaret and the family would like to thank everyone from the parish and beyond who attended Denys’ Celebration of Life at the crematorium. There were so many people there, it was standing room only. It made the service very memorable for us all.

The February Quiz was won by The Outsiders who must now be cursing the December weather for causing their nonappearance and the loss of points.

However, despite losing one of their key players to Jason Donovan, Barton Hall increased their lead at the top of the table by a further point and must now be favourites for the overall title, with just one round left to play. But who knows what might happen! Congratulations to all who took part.

Also, all the lovely cards, messages, help and support you have given us is very much appreciated.

lion”. Before many meadows were ploughed up during the last war, they were more widespread and used to be picked, by country people, in vast numbers to be sent to places like London and Birmingham to bring a breath of Spring to townspeople.

Another flower, which appears when the sun gains strength, is the Lesser Celandine. Where the soil is disturbed, its bright yellow flower lights up the garden and the wayside. It is one of my favourites because the sight of it always lifts my spirits and makes me smile.

There has been a report recently, that insect numbers have suffered a drastic decline worldwide, and that this will affect us all if it continues at the present rate.

Most of us have an ambivalent attitude towards insects. We like butterflies. We are not so sure about moths perhaps, and many of us don’t like wasps. I live in a house which is a home for spiders which I tolerate because, in the Summer, they catch flies. But the other I day I spotted a very large hairy house spider just under the rim of the WC bowl and I must confess that I sent her on her way to the drain!

However, talking to a friend of mine, we agreed that over the past few years, there has been a marked decline in butterflies and that grasshoppers are rarely seen whereas at one time, every step that we took in a meadow used to disturb several.

What we tend to forget is that insects are near the bottom of the food chain and that most birds rely on them to provide nourishment for their young. Also, we humans rely on bees and other insects to pollinate our crops, so we need, urgently, to review our use of insecticides, weed killers and other poisons which we have invented and use, without much regard for the consequences. Global warming may have had some influence on insect numbers too, where there have been severe changes in climate, for example, prolonged drought.

The snow at the end of January encouraged the crocuses in my garden to bloom and now, when the weather is much warmer, the wild daffodils are starting to appear. Although they appear to be more delicate than their cultivated cousins, they are quite hardy and can stand up to harsh conditions, should March “come in like a

At the time of writing, it seems like the worst of Winter is behind us and there are signs of Spring.

A few weeks ago, it was all very different and snow and ice made it difficult to get around.

We are very grateful for the work that Cllr.

Farr put in by using our snow gritter and ensuring that our roads stayed as safe as possible.

You may be aware that local elections for District Councillors are taking place on 2nd May 2019. Further information on what to do if you are interested in becoming a councillor yourself can be found on our website www.yarnscombe.org.uk.

Michael Clark has a sign making business in High Bickington, where he has been living for 35 years. He is a volunteer cook at the Freedom Centre in Barnstaple and describes himself as a “novice councillor”. If elected, he would strive to be approachable and, as he is living in a farming community, he would be sympathetic to countryside issues, but consideration would need to be exercised from all members of community.

Wellington Harbour New Zealand is a wonderful place to visit, it is at times vibrant and bustling with city people taking a break from work, people jogging, others walking dogs, buskers, children diving into the water and then at other times it is quiet and peaceful, the sea sparkles as it ripples and laps against harbour rocks, it is a place to watch boats small and large coming in and going out.

And along the front there is a multi-coloured piano waiting to be played by anyone who wishes to try. A young girl ran up all excited to the piano and started hitting the keys, the sound was for some an annoying plink, plonk, plink; no one stood to listen, passers by politely smiled and walked to a quieter part of the harbour however, the child was soon accompanied by her father and together they played the most beautiful music ....., the plink, plonk, plink were the only notes the girl knew to the duet they played.

RUBBISH DATES – MARCH 2019

Dial 999 if you suspect someone is having a cardiac arrest.

The Ambulance service have details of our defibrillator, the location and the code to open the cabinet and should tell you when you ring them (the defibrillator is in the entrance to the Victory Hall).

This timetable only relates to those properties served by Torridge District Council (there are 6 properties in the parish

The defibrillator has to be kept in a temperature-controlled cabinet to prevent deterioration. If you need to access the defibrillator the code to the cabinet is

covered by North Devon District Council which has a different rubbish collection timetable)
