The turnout at St Andrew’s Church for the carol service was fantastic. It was great to see the church full of Yarnscombe-ites, as well as parishoners from other villages, to celebrate Christmas as a community.

A special thanks to Marian Farr and her team of florists who decorated the church so beautifully for the Christmas period.

Also, a big thank you to Rev Paul Bysouth for a rousing address, the Parochial Church Council, the refreshments and all the help behind the scenes by the Rescue Group.

VILLAGER NEWS It is was with great sadness that just before Christmas, Denys Crocker passed away. Our deepest sympathies are sent to Margaret, Sue and the rest of the family.

We are sure that the Crocker family were pleased to see so many people from the village in attendance at both the funeral and afterwards at the Village Hall.

THE WATERFALL

The band have now recruited a bass player and had a chance to do a recording in January. They have come on leaps and bounds since gaining the experience at Yarnscombe. So, thanks to everyone that came along; young and old and for your feedback.

On behalf of Yarnscombe Parish Council, we would like to wish all parishioners a happy, healthy and successful 2019.

At our last meeting of 2018, the budget for the upcoming financial year was discussed and councillors decided to keep the precept at £6500. Yarnscombe PC has been able to build up a financial safety cushion, so we are able to deal with unexpected expenditures and/or ongoing cutbacks.

As mentioned in a previous article, the notice board in the centre of the village had to be removed, as the wall it was fastened to is unsafe.

The notice board itself has been given some much needed TLC and has been put into storage. Councillors have been discussing alternative locations that are central and easily accessible. The purchase of a new, smaller notice board is also on the agenda. After discussing several options, the bus shelter was proposed as a suitable location. We welcome your ideas and suggestions on this matter.

Improvements in communication between council and parishioners is an issue close to our heart, and the notice board plays a vital role in our community. Please contact any of the councillors, myself or come to our next meeting.

THE QUIZ LEAGUE: SEASON 3 ROUNDS 3 & 4

SHORTMAT BOWLS Our successful Shortmat Bowls team were hosts of the Walter Avery Tournament just before Christmas, where the trophy was won by the team from Winkleigh.

The Christmas Quiz saw numerous people extremely well-attired for the occasion, with Dom spending the whole evening flashing away!

Thank you to all who made the effort. Leavers & Remainers further cemented their place at the top of the table, opening up a three point lead over the chasing pack.

It was amazing to see so many teams from the area taking part in our Village Hall.

The January Quiz threw up some huge surprises – scores on the sport (Jamie Vardy made another appearance as Spiderman) and politics rounds were exceptionally high, with entertainment scoring lowly in comparison. What does that suggest about our participants? And, more surprisingly, our league leaders had a disastrous night, losing their position at the top to the very consistent Barton Hall who now have a two point lead.

Overall, some excellent quizzing yet again - well done to all.

CHURCH ANNOUNCEMENT From 13th January 2019, the Revd Mike Clark will have stepped down as Team Rector of the Two Rivers Mission Community and will have taken up a new appointment as the Mission and Ministry Development Advisor for Barnstaple Archdeaconry.

This exciting new post will allow Mike to make use of his considerable experience of life and ministry in North Devon as he joins the diocesan team helping churches to have better conversations about their vision and strategy.

Mike will not be returning to work as Team Rector before taking up the new appointment.

Service Outreach Holy Communion Evening Worship

As you may know the Revd Tracey Doyle has been appointed as Interim Team Rector and will continue to serve in this half-time role until the appointment of a full-time Team Rector. Mike and Helen and their family will continue to live in North Devon, and we hope to be able to say goodbye to them properly and celebrate their ministry with the mission team communities over the past 11 years, in the New Year.

The church was beautifully decorated for the occasion. Marian Farr co-ordinated this deftly and she, and all who contributed to it, are warmly thanked.

Rose Woollacott and Anne Prowse performed a minor miracle in circulating the refreshments afterwards.

The costs of all the materials, all the facilities and all the refreshments for the evening were kindly donated, so the magnificent sum of £302.47, which was gathered in the collection, can all be applied to the work of the Yarnscombe Church Rescue Group during the coming year.

The musicians’ playing, the beneficial effects of Richard Pengilley’s practice sessions and Hazel Jago’s coaxing our old church organ into one of its greatest ever performances, all combined together to deliver something truly sublime. Well done everyone!

Last, but by no means least, our thanks need to go to Tim Harris who masterminded the whole event from beginning to end and without whose drive and enthusiasm it would never have happened.

The number of thefts of tools from vans throughout Bideford and Barnstaple over the last few months has been steadily increasing.

Ford Transit vans seem to be the most likely to be broken into and some owners have been offered free security upgrades to Ford Transit and Tourneo built between 28/03/12 and 1/07/17. You can check your eligibility by phoning your local Ford Dealership and giving them your Vehicle registration.

NATURE NOTES As I write, it is mid-January and, although Winter has been mild so far, there is the prospect of cold weather to come. The signs of this may be seen in the large flock of starlings, several hundred strong, in the area plus the fieldfares which visit our pastures at this time of year.

On the other hand, the snowdrops are out, as are a few primroses and even the odd daffodil.

In the fields near my home, a couple of skylarks have started staking their claims to territory with a few experimental songs while on the wing.

The increasing day length triggers the urge to mate and begin nesting, irrespective of the weather, so expect to see more of this behaviour in the month to come.

It is sad to see the number of foxes killed on our roads. However, it shows that they are still around, although I haven’t seen a live one for some time. There used to be a fox which regularly crossed the field in front of my home, but I think that its path was disrupted by developments in the neighbouring fields, or it may have met its end somewhere.

South Molton I had the good fortune to see four red deer crossing the road, ahead of my car. It was late at night so we were able to come to a halt and watch as they leaped over the banks on either side. This occurred near the Bray valley so I can only assume that they were following the river downstream going from one copse to another. By the way, we were not going too fast, otherwise we would have been in trouble. If you see one deer crossing, there are usually others to follow and it is well worth waiting to see such beautiful, graceful animals and to avoid accidents.

I expect that some of you may have taken part in the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch which is a very useful way of taking stock of our more common garden birds, as well as the odd unusual visitor.

Sadly, many species of birds, especially the insect-eating variety, are declining in numbers, owing to the wide-spread use of pesticides and the inability of some European governments to enforce their laws on the trapping or shooting of migrating birds. So, if you are going on holiday to southern Europe this Summer, and you are offered a delicious patĂŠ, it might be worth enquiring about its provenance!

We are waiting on a decision about the future of the Mobile Library Service from Devon County Council after a consultation exercise earlier this year. As this is the case these timetables are provisional and may change, but we will advertise well in advance if they do.

To avoid disappointment, please don’t forget the deadline for submission of any articles for The Eagle is the 20th of each month. Anything submitted after this date can’t be included in The Eagle.
