ublic Screen is an event designed to bring video art to the street.

Breaking any boundaries an institution might hold from exposing art to the public audience, Yara Mekawei brings this project in order to target the everyday mass, gaining their interest to learn and interact with video art works.

The event is like an announcement of short moving images, where for the first time they will not be conditioned by theme or concept, but only screen an experimental and time-warped series done by various age groups in the practice from both leading and emerging video artists from the MENA region. All video artists are independent practitioners aiming to expose their works in the public sphere, allowing for more dialogues and discussions to arise between video-makers and the public audience to expose their ideas and perspectives on a collective level.

Public Screen supports talented artists by presenting their creative works to a broad audience in a public space in Cairo. Making this type of art available and accessible to a diverse audience of spectators and pedestrians of all social classes and ages is the main aim of Public Screen. Based on the different video works we will engage in conversation with the audience, whether they have an artistic background or not. The artworks cover various topics whereas the purpose of the screenings is not an educational one. Public Screen will take place in Midan Lazoghly in Mounira which is a busy neighborhood that is accessible to every citizen. This makes Public Screen an innovative video project in Egypt.
