A lighting lover during architectural study, always passionate to sketch and drawings to deliver lighting design idea, and self-motivitated to learn new things.
•
Although she mainly worked on historic projects, Yangan was not limited to be familiar with antique luminaires and bespoke pendant design for churches. She is interesting in luminaire design when she worked on coursework to design Choop table light during UCL study in teamwork. She has a wide interest on new trends of lighting technology, luminaire design and like browsing different projects. Yangan has been building up a fitting database in Excel and updating with useful lighting product sfor potential future projects including hospitality, hotel, residential, landscape projects and some special projects include cruise and public transportation. The information is from lastest tradefairs and lighting magazine since Light + Built 2022, as she has a wide interest in browsing and receiving lastest manufacturers information and circular economy trends for future lighting industry. Yangan believes if an assistant lighting designer in the team could work as filter to collect this information from manufacturers and organize them properly, it would save whole team’s time to learn from new luminaire design trend and speed up design decisions.
Yangan was attracted by architectural and interior lighting design when she designed architectural space and lighting for her graduate design project, bombed-out St Luke’s church during Bachelor. When absorbing holistic knowledge system of light during study at UCL, she also assisted to do lighting calculations to verify reliability of historic lighting design ideas at Lighting Perceptions.Yangan believes lighting in urban corners and natural scenes was full of glamours for inspiring all lighting designers, she was self-commissioned as illustrator in free time and record attracting light scenes as most usual theme in her own artworks.
During the projects, Yangan has developed Indesign layout skills, CAD, and freehand drawings skills over the period. But Yangan is also partly self-taught in Revit and BIM software and has learned from sustainable building design - gained during her architectural studies in Liverpool. She is seeking to develop a career as a light designer and looking forwards to challenges from different lighting design projects which she haven’t tried before.
Yangan has been involved into a variety of historic regeneration projects, and in process of dealing with irregular interior shape of cathedral, churches, and halls. she develops a working flow to verify the lighting in complex architectural space from Autocad - Sketchup/Rhino - Dialux. She learned from strict lighting standards for protections of historic paintings, and techinical design of picture light like the cases in Old Royal Naval College nave, Liverpool metropolitan cathedral, and Draper’s Hall.
Our client, the Bombed Out Church Garden Bar, have secured an extended lease for the site including permission for a permanent intervention in principle. In line with the requirements of our client, the Art Hub will have a focus on community engagement and learning via access to a multifunctional hall, workshop and café, as well as keeping the grounds open to the public. Studios will provide a space for local creatives to develop their ideas in the rich context of St Luke’s as a heritage asset and memorial. The project also includes a multifunctional hall serving the community by staging events such as talks, exhibitions, as well as wedding and other activities including yoga. Public and community access is further encouraged via a café and shop. The aspiration was for a high quality contemporary and contextual, low maintenance, low carbon, low energy building.
During the visit to Norwich Cathedral, the indirect light in hallway and lady chapel gave me some inspiration. Firstly, light sources could be unconsious. Visitor won observe the fittings, hidden using the existing locations of the pillar and lintel. Therefore there is no concious direct glare or hot spot from eye levels of visitors. The indrect light enrich the layers of this interior space. When the floodlight and pendants are set at right angle to uplight the vault and floor, indirect soft glow bounce back from vault and wall surfaces with around 100 lux on eye height, with 300 lux for fullfilling needs of reading task at the pulpit and stall. The indirect reflections from 3000k warm white light spots could create an poetic space in ambient white space in architecture. And spread of cool downlight on reader brought delicate contrast in CCT ( 5000K vs 3000K) stand out from warm white background. .

The architectural design concept is to memorize the world war II and lost historic structure. The column and church roof were regenerated by the alternatives in wooden and semi transparent ETFE cushions. During the day, generious daylight luminated the nave. To enhance this the night view of this architectural concept, was the start point of this lighting design.
Arch light testing process
Test different quantities options
- column uplight
- Vault downlight
Two light scenarios: Amber - blue and ambient white light were set to adapt to a dark night show event and normal event needs. The light effect borrow some favour from musicial shows in theatre,
courtyard outside the nave was a restaurant and bar space. light scenrios with yellow-blue contrast and warm white illuminated this space for hospitality and leisure during the time.
The courtyard outside the nave have a generous space for visitors to sit down and appearciate the historic structure. The controllable downlight system installed at first level in a grid of steel beams provide the functional light for the courtyard. The lighting system could be dimmable to provide soft modelling light in warm yellow color, whereas IThe Orange_Blue contrast is here when The LED spotlight at bar could turned into blue lights. And soft white sphere light with plants are decorative to the whole lighting environment.
Poland traditional mouth-blowing and hand painting of glass ornaments lie at the very heart of Mysteria. Like their highest standard for design and produce Christmas ornaments, client has high requirement on functional lighting for interior production. The showroom and manufacturing hall are space for showing the old-fashioned manufacturing cycle. From mouth-blowing, silvering with native silver, hand decorating, and packaging, each ornament is handled with care and given the special touch needed to produce a one-of-a-kind work of art.
This project has two part: internal and external design.
The lighting design concept enhances Mysteria’s brand by adopting the brand red and white colours to the architectural lighting elements. Christmas elements are intergrated
The user has the flexibility to create different lighting scenes based on themes The lighting control system is utilised to schedule to turn off or dim down based on user behavior.
The lighting design encourages social interaction for the people in both outdoor and indoor settings throughout the day. It evokes curiosity and exploration in bystanders.

This project is a residential project for our clients who is an Alzheimer’s disease patient. As bright and full spectrum light from 5000lux to 10000lux can be beneficial to reset the circadian rhythm for patients suffering from the Alzheimer disease. And bright light is helpful to treat sleep disorder. Natural light is the most viable light source that satisfies criteria. Increasing of illumination in daylighting, combining pre-set light scenes is one of main strategy of this design to create a sufficiently bright light space. .
With expectation to have a good daylight-lit space, architects adopt the ideas of natural daylighting, and maximize possible openings in loft levels and ground floor after considering overheat issue in summer sessions. Considering that our clients are inconvenient to moer around with wheelchair, another strategy is utilizing handrail light to guide them. Handrail light installed at sitting height is recessedunder handrail and the beam angles properly cover the corridors in this house. This ensures the user could easily move around in this house with illumination of handrail light.

Our design idea at entrance hall is adding a uniform, continous wall washing light. Our client is an lover for artwork collections. An good illumination at entrance art gallery is important for her to appreaciate and gain joy. Consideration of sitting height at wheelchair, the wall need to be uniformly washed from bottom to top. We choose iGuzzini blader with 1 metre distance to uniformly wash the wall. With good optics to create uniform lighting on the wall, observers won’t see the glare directly.
Another design idea is to use downlight recessed hidden in the handrail to wash the floor all day, This is particular for needs of guiding wheelchair circulations for all day movement requirement.
Entrance hall of building is the main area to connect other rooms of house. The most attractive lighting features are the basket shape pendants at the visual centre axis. The hive pendants have a natural shape like a weavebrid cave, and casually hanging above the entrance tables. This light provide additional ambient light over the tables. Recessed downlight create discrete pools over tables, both light are in 2700K and warmly wash the floor
