THE TRIUMPH of TIME â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Triumph of Timeâ&#x20AC;? was the subtitle Robert Greene gave his late 16th-century romance, Pandosto, which was William Shakespeareâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s source for The Winterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Tale.

Of course, it is now a commonplace to remark how from the whole cloth of anotherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s plot, Shakespeare could make a work so completely his own. The Winterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Tale is a marvelous example of just such alchemy, but the difference that Shakespeare and Greene make of the concept of timeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;triumphâ&#x20AC;? is worth lingering over. You wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think the same word could do for both, so opposed are their ends.

But upon Fawniaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s arrival in her natal land, her father unwittingly, but insistently, falls in love with her. When the now-extremely-awkward family reunion comes about and Pandosto realizes that he has lusted after his own daughter, he commits suicide in remorse for the damage he has wrought. That is timeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s triumph in Pandosto. Time in Greeneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hands is more like the avenger Shakespeare had imagined in his bitterly comic ending to Twelfth Night, where Feste taunts the beaten and broken Malvolio withâ&#x20AC;&#x153;and thus the whirligig of time brings in his revenges.â&#x20AC;?

But that Shakespeare was the Shakespeare of a decade earlier. The Shakespeare of the late plays, the Romances in particular, more often sees time as no less inexorable, but occasionally also benevolent and merciful. The Winterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Tale is famous for three things: the reanimation of Hermione, the death-by-stage-direction of Antigonus (â&#x20AC;&#x153;exit pursued by a bearâ&#x20AC;?), and the pers

8 me. When the Chorus steps forth as that most elusive of dimensions, he begins, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I, that please some, try all, both joy and terror/Of good and bad, that makes and unfolds error.â&#x20AC;?

The emphasis is mine, of course. That trial of Time (as in Tom Paineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;These are the times that try menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s souls,â&#x20AC;? and my motherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;Young lady, you are trying my patienceâ&#x20AC;?), feel it, as our knees creak and our arms shorten (you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t tell me itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s my eyes!), as the names of our childhood pets are quicker to hand than the handle of the person we met last week, comes upon us as that revenge-delivery systemâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;Time in its whirligig mode.

But for this production, director Liz Diamond has crafted, in the reanimation of Hermione, a â&#x20AC;&#x153;human miracle of forgivenessâ&#x20AC;? that requires not only that we do â&#x20AC;&#x153;awake our faithâ&#x20AC;? but obliges us to look upon Time as balm. For in The Winterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Tale, Shakespeare asks us to consider not only the wrinkles Time has created, but those

very moving version of Greeneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;triumph of time.â&#x20AC;?
