THIS IS ILLYRIA: STORIES Pentecost is set within a fictional nation known as Our Country. On the borderlands of Europe, Our Country is a crossroads between East and West, the site of anti-communist uprisings, nationalist political movements, government repression, and fledgling attempts at democracy. But these events, in themselves, are not fictional. Playwright David Edgar has created a political history of Our Country that includes a mix of Eastern European trends from the second half of the twentieth century. Nor are the human experiences in Pentecost truly fictional, either. The characters of Pentecost act as storytellers, allowing us access to some of the real-life people and events lifted by Edgar from the front pages and the evening news broadcasts of the 1990s. Here are just a few of them:

REFUGEES OF BLÅGÅRD CHURCH Inspirations for: Yasmin

Inspiration for: Leo Katz

Beck, a professor of art history at Columbia University until his death in 2007, was outspoken in his rejection of modern art conservation and restoration techniques. He gained fame in the 1980s and 1990s for his vigorous fight against the restoration of the soot-covered frescos of the Sistine Chapel. Beck argued that art should not be restored to a gleaming condition (which he claimed imposed modern aesthetics onto the artwork), but instead remain untouched to reflect the journey of the piece through time.

Blågård Church in Copenhagen was the site of a 1991–92 standoff between Palestinian refugees and Danish authorities. Ninety-six Palestinian refugees who had been rejected for asylum in Denmark sought sanctuary in the basement of the church, refusing to leave until all Palestinians in the country were granted political protection.

The Palestinians occupied the church for 154 days. The Danish government acquiesced in March of 1992, passing a bill which granted asylum to every Palestinian who had been in the country for more than 12 months.

VOJISLAV ŠEŠELJ/ ´ MIRKO JOVIC ´/ VEDRAN SMAILOVIC DIJANA IHAS Inspirations for: Amira

Smailovi´ c, known as “The Cellist of Sarajevo,” gained international fame during the siege of the city at the height of the Bosnian War. After twenty-two were killed in a bread line bombing, Smailovi´ c returned to the same street and played Albinoni’s Adagio in G Minor for twenty-two straight days as an elegy.

Dijana Ihas was the viola player in the String Quartet of Sarajevo, a group of musicians that played in the bombedout streets throughout the conflict. The Quartet played 206 concerts among the carnage, continuing even after the deaths of both violinists. To stay warm, Ihas burned her clothes, but kept her formal concert attire in order to give the city a sense of dignity in a time of despair. Ihas was an advisor on this production.

Inspirations for: Pusbas

Šešelj was a Serbian politician and leader of the Serbian Radical Party in the 1990s. He was also associated with the White Eagles, a nationalist paramilitary group led by Jovi´ c that operated in Croatia and Bosnia during the Bosnian War. Šešelj’s political party armed the group with weapons, and his speeches advocated the killing of Croats and Muslims, while Jovi´ c carried out the attacks. Jovi´ c has never been tried for his crimes. Šešelj was tried at the International Criminal Court, but was acquitted last year, with the judge arguing his actions only sought to “boost… morale.” He is now the Leader of the Opposition in the Serbian Parliament.

ISABELLA GIOVANNINI (CLEOPATRA, POLICE WOMAN) is an English major at Yale College. She was recently seen at Yale School of Drama in ’Tis Pity She’s a Whore. Other Yale credits include Romeo and Juliet; As You Like It; Henry IV; Why We Have Winter; Twelfth Night; New and Improved; Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992; Eurydice; Doubt; and Mr. Burns, a post-electric play. She was director of the improv comedy troupe, The Viola Question, and trained at The Groundlings, the Upright Citizens Brigade, and the iO Theater in Chicago.

EVELYN GIOVINE (TONI NEWSOME, CZABA’S SECRETARY, SECOND COMMANDO) is a second-year MFA candidate at Yale School of Drama, where she has been seen in The Hour of Great Mercy. CAST STEVEN LEE JOHNSON (LEO KATZ) is a third-year MFA candidate at Yale School of Drama, where he has been seen in The Three Sisters, Amy and the Orphans, Othello, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. He has appeared in Romeo and Juliet (Elm Shakespeare Company), Clybourne Park (Guthrie Theater), Red (Park Square Theatre), and in several Shakespeare plays with Chicago Shakespeare Theater. Other regional credits include Theater Latté Da, Door Shakespeare, and Hope Summer Repertory Theatre. Television: Chicago Fire (NBC) and Masterclass (HBO). Steven is a Presidential Scholar in the Arts and holds a BFA from the University of Minnesota/Guthrie BFA Actor Training Program.

IPSITAA KHULLAR (FATIMA, PAINTING RESTORER) is a junior at Yale College double-majoring in economics and psychology. She appeared in both L’Etoile and The Cunning Little Vixen with Opera Theatre of Yale College. Ipsitaa is the President of the South Asian Society, The Yale Kalaa (Yale’s Only Indian Classical Dance group), and the Yale Hindi Debate Association. She is a Peer Liaison with the Yale College Dean’s Office for International Students and Scholars.

KINETA KUNUTU (ANTONIO, PAINTING RESTORER) is a second-year MFA candidate at Yale School of Drama, where she has been seen in If Pretty Hurts Ugly Must Be a Muhfucka: An understanding of a West African folktale.

Other credits include In the Red and Brown Water (Yale Cabaret); The Trojan Women, Mies Julie (Yale Summer Cabaret); but i cd only whisper (The Flea Theater); Mandela (East Harlem Repertory Company); and Macbeth (The Drilling Company). She studied with the American Musical Dramatic Academy, and was a resident member of The Bats at The Flea Theater.

PATRICK MADDEN (OLIVER DAVENPORT) is a third-year MFA candidate at Yale School of Drama, where his credits include The Hour of Great Mercy, Bulgaria! Revolt!, The Three Sisters, New Domestic Architecture, and Bluebeard’s Wife, a tale of (gay) marriage and (queer) death. He also appeared in And Tell Sad Stories of the Deaths of Queens at Yale Cabaret, and was a Presidential Public Service Fellow for the 2017 Dwight/Edgewood Project. He has trained and performed at Shakespeare & Company, Williamstown Theatre Festival, and Brown University, where he received a BA in English.

WILLIAM NIXON (GREGORI) is a junior at Yale College whose credits include Amadeus (Yale Theater Studies); Strange Flesh (Yale Dramatic Association); Romeo and Juliet and The Hours (Yale Drama Coalition). He also serves as Director for The Viola Question improv comedy troupe.

SOHINA SIDHU (TUNU, PAINTING RESTORER) is a second-year MFA candidate at Yale School of Drama, where she was seen in Escape from Happiness. She conceived and directed The Red Tent at Yale Cabaret and 8

appeared in The Trojan Women at Yale Summer Cabaret. Other credits include The Seagull (Schapiro Theatre), Caenis (Pace Gallery NYC), Meditations in an Avalanche (Alchemical Theatre), and Seven; a documentary play (Bovard Auditorium, USC), among others. Television credits include Outsourced. Sohina holds degrees in acting from University of Southern California School of Drama and film from USC’s School of Cinematic Arts.

Prior to Yale, Stephanie was a Fulbright Scholar in Spain, and worked in theatre and television in New York, where her credits include scenic artist for Hamilton (The Public Theater) and King Lear (Shakespeare in the Park); art clearance coordinator for HBO’s Girls, and ABC’s The Family; and art production assistant for Showtime’s Nurse Jackie, and HBO’s The Night of. MATTHEW CONWAY (PRODUCTION DRAMATURG) is a third-year MFA candidate at Yale School of Drama, where his credits include …and sometimes why. At Yale Repertory Theatre, Matthew was co-dramaturg on last season’s production of Assassins. Additional directing and production dramaturgy credits include work with Boston Children’s Theatre, Immediate Theatre Company, and Cap & Bells Theatre Company, where he also served as Artistic Director. He has performed at both Yale Cabaret (Débâcles) and Yale School of Drama (Othello).

His current research focuses on national identity and political performance in totalitarian regimes. Matthew holds a BA in history and theatre from Williams College. During the summer, he teaches acting and dramatic literature at Phillips Academy, Andover.

CREATIVE TEAM LUCIE DAWKINS (DIRECTOR) is a third-year MFA candidate from Cambridge, UK. At Yale School of Drama, she has directed The Dog Pack Play and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. She directed and adapted Styx Songs at Yale Cabaret, and served as Assistant Director to James Bundy on Happy Days at Yale Rep. She has a Double First BA in classics from Oxford, and was President of the Oxford University Dramatic Society. Other directing credits include The Picture of Dorian Gray (Oxford Playhouse); The Merchant of Venice (Worcester College Lake, Oxford); Spoon River, Faultlines, The Arabian Nights (Burton Taylor Theatre, Oxford); and Killing Hitler (O’Reilly Theatre, Oxford, and Chipping Norton Theatre). Lucie trained as an actor at the Junior Guildhall in London, and performed in OUDS’ national tours, including as Titania in A Midsummer Night’s Dream in association with Thema Holt. Lucie has designed puppets for Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and His Dark Materials (O’Reilly Theatre, Oxford); and Around the World in Eighty Days (C-Nova, Edinburgh). CHRISTINA FONTANA (STAGE MANAGER) is a second-year MFA candidate at Yale School of Drama, where her credits include Bulgaria! Revolt!, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and The Hour of Great Mercy. She also stage managed The Trojan Women at Yale Summer Cabaret. Prior to Yale, Christina worked with Cirque du Soleil in Las Vegas on KÀ at the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino and Criss Angel Believe at the Luxor Hotel and Casino. She also stage managed onboard Norwegian Cruise Line with Blue Man Group, Nickelodeon, Cirque Dreams, and Legends in Concert. Christina earned her BA in performing arts from Colorado State University in Fort Collins.

HERIN KAPUTKIN (COSTUME DESIGNER) is a second-year MFA candidate at Yale School of Drama. Her credits include Marvellous (NYC Fringe Festival); The Shakes: Romeo and Juliet (The Flea Theater); Cendrillon (Purchase Opera Company); Twelfth Night and Three Birds Alighting on a Field (Purchase Repertory Theatre). She has assisted designers such as Linda Cho, Paul Carey, and Rachel Guilfoyle, among others, and was the design assistant at Long Wharf Theatre where she assisted Ilona Symogi, Jess Goldstein, Emily Rebholz, and Paul Tazewell. Herin holds a BFA in costume design and construction from Purchase College.

GWYNETH MULLER (CHOREOGRAPHER) is a second-year MFA candidate in theater management at Yale School of Drama and a jointdegree candidate at Yale School of Management. This fall, she is serving as Assistant Managing Director of Yale Repertory Theatre. Prior to coming to Yale, Gwyneth danced with the New York City Ballet for 17 years. While with the company, she originated roles in over a dozen works by some of today’s leading choreographers, and danced many featured parts in ballets by George

Balanchine and Jerome Robbins, among others. Gwyneth graduated summa cum laude from Fordham University. Previous choreography credits include A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Yale School of Drama.

VARSHA RAGHAVAN (CHOREOGRAPHER) is a sophomore at Yale College pursuing the computer science and energy studies. She has been learning Bharatanatyam since age six and had her solo dance debut, or arangetram, in 2016. She sincerely enjoys storytelling through dance and loves the heavy rhythmic aspect and discipline of Bharatanatyam, having been in a number of productions. Outside of dance, Varsha has also been an Indian Carnatic Music vocalist since age five and is a dedicated follower of all things music, especially hard and experimental rock.

KATHRYN RUVUNA (SOUND DESIGNER) is a second-year MFA candidate at Yale School of Drama. Her work has recently been heard in In the Red and Brown Water, The Meal, The Red Tent (Yale Cabaret); and Mies Julie (Yale Summer Cabaret). She holds a BFA in sound design from the Conservatory of Theatre Arts at Webster University.

GARIMA SINGH (CHOREOGRAPHER) is a sophomore at Yale College majoring in neuroscience and computer science. She has loved dancing for as long as she can remember and has been learning Bharatnatyam since she was six years old. She has also learned various other dance forms, including jazz, ballet, contemporary, modern, and hip hop and was on her high school drill team. As a dancer, Garima loves to explore how people can communicate and tell stories with their bodies and expressions. An avid theatre fan, Garima also has been the hair designer for several productions at Yale.

NIC VINCENT (LIGHTING DESIGNER) is a second-year MFA candidate at Yale School of Drama where he designed A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Nic also designed lighting for The Red Tent at Yale Cabaret. Originally from Ontario, Canada, Nic has worked with companies such as The Shaw Festival, Shakespeare in the Ruff, and The Banff Centre, among others. Nic holds a BFA in theatre performance production from Ryerson University.

PHILLIP ALEXANDER WORTHINGTON (TECHNICAL DIRECTOR) is a second-year MFA candidate at Yale School of Drama from Houston, Texas, where he was the Technical Director at Queensbury Theatre. He has been a scenic, lighting, and sound designer, and worked as a technician and stagehand for companies including the AT&T Performing Arts Center, Dallas Theater Center, and Kitchen Dog Theater, as well as running the audio crew for Shakespeare Dallas. Alex holds a BA in theatre arts with a concentration in performance and technical direction from the University of North Texas.
