Archiving Springfield Playwright Anne Washburn could not have picked a better archive to draw on for Mr. Burns than Fox’s long-running, prime time cartoon, The Simpsons. In a play that wrestles with the power and potential of storytelling both to preserve the memory of trauma and shape a new society, the evergreen world of Matt Groening’s Springfield, and its iconoclastic nuclear family, provides fertile soil for growing a culture postapocalypse.

Introduced to audiences in 1987 in short segments on The Tracey Ullman Show, the hellraising energy of Bart, the brainy/benevolent earnestness of Lisa, the steadfast hospitality of Marge, and the blunt-force bonehead antics of Homer have combined to lampoon the everchanging cultural and political landscape, giving audiences across generations a gut-busting good time.

The Simpsons and its rich world of characters, including the miserly millionaire owner of the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant, Mr. Burns (YC 1914), have also found their way onto everything from designer T-shirts to meme-fueled subreddits. While these examples illustrate the wide-ranging possibilities of a pop-culture archive, both the franchise’s longevity and recent acquisition by Disney raise a question that the production team have been grappling with throughout our process: Is it possible for art to transcend the forces of commercialism?

Over the course of Mr. Burns’s three acts, we see the performance of a cartoon grow from an act of comradery, to a fledging commercial enterprise, to a post-electric Passion Play. In each instance, Mr. Burns illuminates the powerful potential of remixing and re-framing art to spark meaning in a world desperately crying out for it.

Dramaturg) is a second-year M.F.A. candidate at Yale School of Drama,

where his credits include Completely Out of Fucks. He has served as an associate dramaturg on The Mystery of Irma Vep and The Glass Menagerie, both at the California Shakespeare Theater. Patrick holds a B.A. and M.A. in theater arts from UC Santa Cruz.

As a scholar, Patrick has presented multiple times at the annual Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas (LMDA) Conference and will presenting at the upcoming gathering of the American Society for Theatre Research (ASTR).

Riva Fairhall (Lighting Designer)

is a second-year M.F.A. candidate at Yale School of Drama, where she designed The Tempest and assisted on the 2019 Carlotta Festival of New Plays. Michael Friedman (Score)

Composer/lyricist for Misery, Saved, and The Civilians’ This Beautiful City, Gone Missing, [I Am] Nobody’s Lunch, and Canard Canard Goose? as well as The Brand New Kid, In the Bubble, Hoover Comes Alive!. Co-author: Paris Commune. Friedman was a Barron visiting professor at Princeton University, an artistic associate New York Theatre Workshop, a founding associate artist of The Civilians, and a MacDowell and Hodder Fellow. Daniela Hart (Sound Designer) is a

second-year M.F.A. candidate at Yale School of Drama, where she assisted on shakespeare’s as u like it. Other sound design credits include Avital (Yale Cabaret); References to Salvador Dalí Make Me Hot (Harvard University at American Repertory Theater); Julius Caesar, Romeo and Juliet (Vermont Shakespeare); Neighborhood 3, Must Wash Hands (Rattlestick Playwrights Theater), and The Parlour (Soho Rep.) among others. Matthew Lewis (Technical Director)

is a third-year M.F.A. candidate at Yale School of Drama, where he was an assistant technical director on Passion, a role which he also performed on Twelfth Night at Yale Repertory Theatre. Before coming to Yale, Matthew worked with the Classical Theatre of Harlem and apprenticed with the Glimmerglass Festival Opera and Maine State Music Theatre. He holds a B.F.A. in theater design and technology from Penn State, where he was the technical director on A Light in the Piazza, Be More Chill, and The Importance of Being Earnest.

Bridget Lindsay (Scenic Designer) is a second-year M.F.A. candidate at Yale School of Drama, where she assisted on Seven Spots On The Sun. Bel Ben Mamoun (Music Director/ Musician) is a third-year music history student in the Department of Music. Her research interests include Andalusian poetry, protest traditions during the French Protectorate, and Moorish influences in Medieval Spain. A frequent performer of both contemporary and historically informed performance, recent credits include No Chairs No Applause, Animal Brain (Ensemble CATHEXIS), l’Orfeo, l’Egisto (Yale Baroque Opera Project), Venus and Adonis, Le convenienze ed inconvenienze teatrali (Opera Theatre of Yale College), and the Silent Lyre (Elm City Consort). Current program manager of Yale in New York and the Horowitz Piano Series, Bel has held past positions as a researcher for the Atlas Azawan Association, and as guest music director of the St. Pierre Cathedral in Rabat.

Stephen Marks (Costume Designer)

is a second-year M.F.A. candidate at Yale School of Drama, where he assisted on Seven Spots On The Sun. His previous credits include Independence and Dancing at Lughnasa (Stella Adler Studio of Acting). While earning a B.A. in theater and dance at James Madison University, Stephen designed several productions including Picnic, The Wild Party, The Yellow Boat, Assassins, and Other Desert Cities. Prior to Yale, Stephen worked for John Kristiansen New York, Inc., the Heritage Theatre Festival, and Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival.

Michael Raine (Choreographer) is a

NYC-based director, choreographer, and teacher. An artistic associate at The Flea Theater, Michael has directed the world premieres of Mac Wellman’s The Fez, Catya McMullen’s LOCKED UP BITCHES, and the Grand-Guignol classic The System. He is also the artistic producer of the Flea’s late-night new play competition, Serials. Michael’s choreography has been seen at Joe’s Pub, Ars Nova, Theater for a New City, 92nd St Y, and the Folksbiene, as well as Yale Rep, five seasons at Weston Playhouse, and the Japanese tour of Rent. Michael teaches ungendered historical social and partner dancing for NYU’s graduate acting department, where he has choreographed over 20 productions.

Erin Sullivan (Projection Installation Designer) is a third-year M.F.A. candidate at Yale School of Drama, where her credits include YELL: a “documentary” of my time here. She also designed Avital and Phosphene at

Yale Cabaret. Her installation, Spine Lines (with Megumi Katayama at Yale Art Gallery), is an official selection for The Prague Quadrennial. The Benjamin Mordecai III Production Fund, established by

a graduate of the School, honors the memory of the Tony Award-winning producer who served as Associate Dean and Chair of the Theater Management Department at Yale School of Drama from 1993 until his death in 2005. During his tenure as Yale Rep’s Managing Director alongside Dean/Artistic Director Lloyd Richards, 1982–1993, he developed a model of professional producing that changed the course of new play development in the American theatre. His 25 Broadway credits included Tony Kushner’s Angels in America, as well as work by Anna Deavere Smith, Athol Fugard, David Henry Hwang, Terrence McNally, Robert Schenkkan, and perhaps most significantly August Wilson, with whom he collaborated on each of the ten plays in the epic 20th Century Cycle.
