RECOGNIZING THE REVILED Scholar Albert Schweitzer, who studied the historical Jesus, once remarked that whenever a biographer looks for Jesus’s face in the deep, dark well of history, she inevitably finds only her own reflection staring back. But what about when we look for Judas’s face? What do we find then? Betrayer of man. Betrayer of God. Villain. But do we ever see ourselves? In The Last Days of Judas Iscariot, Stephen Adley Guirgis asks us to do just that: to look for Judas deep in that well and to make peace with the face we see staring back at us, to embrace that reflection and to try to find a way out of that well. What if, upon crawling out, we were to discover that belief in an unconditional love requires not the glorification of the godly, but identification with the reviled? What if we playfully speculated with Jorge Luis Borges that even God identifies himself when peering closely at Judas?

"God made Himself totally a man but a man to the point of infamy, a man to the point of reprobation and the abyss. To save us, He could have chosen *any* of the destinies which make up the complex web of history; He could have been Alexander or Pythagoras or Rurik or Jesus; He chose the vilest destiny of all: He was Judas." —J.L. BORGES, THREE VERSIONS OF JUDAS

—MADELINE CHARNE AND EVAN HILL, PRODUCTION DRAMATURGS
