Finding the Key :

Making Fun Home Sing

Alison Bechdel grew up in a family of artists—actors, musicians, historical decorators—while she herself drew cartoons. It was also a family whose secrets would take her years to uncover and understand, as she peeled back the veneer of their life applied as carefully as the William Morris wallpaper that adorned their Beech Creek home.

Alison first acquired a following for her comic Dykes to Watch Out For, which chronicled the soap-operatic lives of a group of (mostly lesbian) politically active city-dwellers. It was this strip, which ran from 1983 to 2008, that launched the now-famous “Bechdel Test,” three rules to assess a movie’s portrayal of women.

In 2006, Alison returned to her childhood memories to create the graphic memoir—what she describes as “a family tragicomic”—Fun Home. The book garnered acclaim from literary and cartoon enthusiasts alike, and sparked the interest of playwright Lisa Kron and composer Jeanine Tesori, who worked on the musical for seven years before it debuted first Off-Broadway in 2013 and then on Broadway in 2015.

Herself a lesbian activist, Kron didn’t want to write the song “Ring of Keys,” now so iconically associated with the musical. More precisely, she didn’t want to musicalize the panel from the Fun Home book that depicts a butch woman in a diner. Though a young Alison doesn’t know the woman, she feels “a surge of joy” upon seeing her. It’s a fleeting moment, quickly quashed by Alison’s father, but vital all the same.

Kron knew that butch women were all too frequently the butts of jokes and feared that putting this moment in the musical would be unintentionally parodic. Tesori, however, insisted—it was too key to leave out. So “Ring of Keys” was born, in which Small Alison sings “I know you / I know you / I know you” in jubilant recognition, suddenly able to imagine herself and her identity in a new way. The story of this moment, in picture and in song, would provide that empowering recognition to thousands more.

was recently seen in Untitled Ke$ha Project and UNAMUSED during the 2019 Satellite Festival at Yale Cabaret. Taylor’s other credits include Backbeard (New York Musical Festival); Hairspray (Consortium Actors); Freckleface Strawberry and Spring Awakening (Russell Sage College). Originally from Troy, New York, Taylor holds a B.S. in musical theater from Russell Sage College.

Doireann Mac Mahon (Medium

Alison) is a third-year M.F.A. candidate at Yale School of Drama, where her credits include Othello, Rock Egg Spoon, The Girl Is Chained, The Last Days of Judas Iscariot, and Henry VI, Part 3. She recently performed her own play, How to Relearn Yourself, at Yale Cabaret. Other credits include the Irish tour of Angela’s Ashes: The Musical (Pat Moylan Productions) and Wrong Turn at Lungfish (Viking Theatre/Civic Theatre Dublin). Doireann holds a B.A. with honors in drama and theater studies from Trinity College in Dublin.

Zoe Mann (Helen Bechdel)

is a third-year actor at Yale School of Drama, where she was seen in Pivot, Trouble In Mind, shakespeare’s as u like it, and Tent Revival. Her other credits include Girls (Yale Repertory Theatre); Bakkhai, The Swallow and the Tomcat (Yale Summer Cabaret); Avital, Wolf/Alice, and directing Burn Book (Yale Cabaret).

She has appeared in productions with Hudson Theatre, The Players Theatre, and The McCarter Theatre.

Juliana Aiden Martinez (Christian

Bechdel) is a third-year actor at Yale School of Drama, where she was seen in Reykjavík; Tent Revival; The Last Days of Judas Iscariot; Henry VI, Part 3; and Shoot Her, Shooter. Her other credits include the west coast premiere of To the Bone (Ubuntu Theatre Project, nominated for Best Supporting Actor); Electra (Theatre Row); For the Love Of (Rattlestick Playwrights Theater); and Fade (Yale Cabaret). Select film and television credits include The Mysteries of Laura (NBC), The Bodega (Univision, Hulu), Boundary and Tarpit. She also attended the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts.

JJ McGlone (Bruce Bechdel) is a third-year M.F.A. candidate at Yale School of Drama, where his credits include Reykjavík, Pivot, Othello, Seven Spots On The Sun, The Seagull, and The Girl Is Chained. Other credits include The Guadalupes, Enter Your Sleep, and his new play Burn Book (Yale Cabaret).

He studied at the British American Drama Academy and earned a B.F.A. in acting from DePaul University.

Laurie Ortega-Murphy (John

Bechdel) is a third-year M.F.A. candidate in theater management at Yale School of Drama. Their acting credits include Fuck Her, Sea Witch, Waste // Land, and The Whale in the Hudson at Yale Cabaret, where they were also a puppeteer in Sea Witch and produced Re:Union, Fuck Her, For Your Eyes Only, Fade, and Burn Book. Last year, they served as Assistant Managing Director of Yale School of Drama and Yale Repertory

Theatre, and as Artistic Programming Fellow at The New Victory Theater in New York. Currently, they are the Managing Editor of the Yale Theater Management Knowledge Base. Laurie holds a B.A. in creative writing and medieval studies from Seattle University.

Eli Pauley (Alison Bechdel) is a

third-year actor at Yale School of Drama, where her credits include The Tempest, Rock Egg Spoon, and shakespeare’s as u like it as well as Bakkhai with Yale Summer Cabaret.

Alison Bechdel (Graphic Novel) is

an American cartoonist, known for the long-running comic strip Dykes to Watch Out For, which became a countercultural institution. Her graphic memoir, Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic, was adapted as a musical and won a Tony Award for Best Musical in 2015. Alison’s comics have appeared in The New Yorker, Slate, McSweeney’s, The New York Times Book Review, and Granta. She received the Guggenheim Fellowship in 2012 and is a 2014 recipient of the MacArthur Genius Award.

Jill Brunelle

Danilo Gambini (Director) is a

third-year M.F.A. candidate at Yale School of Drama, where he directed The Tempest and Rock Egg Spoon.

As the Co-Artistic Director of the 2019 Yale Summer Cabaret, he directed Anne Carson’s adaptation of Euripides’s Bakkhai, and adapted and directed The Swallow and the Tomcat from the Brazilian children’s book O Gato Malhado e a Andorinha Sinhá by Jorge Amado. His other credits include Agreste (Drylands), Ni Mi Madre, Truck (parts I and II) (Yale Cabaret); Don Giovanni, Ariadne Auf Naxos, Eugene Onegin (Theatro São Pedro); and the rock opera The Who’s Tommy by Pete Townshend (Memorial da América Latina). He has assisted directors including Fernando Meirelles, Iacov Hillel, Laurie Woolery, Mauro Wrona, and Caetano Vilela. Danilo holds a B.A. in film and television (Curso Superior do Audiovisual) and an artist diploma as an actor from

Lisa Kron (Book and Lyrics) is a

writer and performer whose work has been widely produced in New York, regionally, and internationally. Her plays include Well, 2.5 Minute Ride, and The Ver**zon Play. She wrote the book and lyrics for the musical Fun Home (with music by composer Jeanine Tesori), winner of five 2015 Tony Awards including Best Musical. Lisa and Jeanine were the first all-woman team to ever receive a Tony for Best Score. Honors include a Guggenheim fellowship, a Doris Duke Performing Artists Award, and the Cal Arts/ Alpert Award. She is a proud founding member of the OBIE- and BessieAward-winning collaborative theater company The Five Lesbian Brothers.

Lisa currently serves as Secretary of the Dramatists Guild Council and on the boards of the McDowell Colony and the Lilly Awards.

Nicole E. Lang (Lighting Designer)

is a second-year M.F.A. candidate at Yale School of Drama, where she designed Othello and assisted on shakespeare’s as u like it. Her other credits include Waste // Land, Bodyssey, The Purple Flower, The Whale in the Hudson, and projections for Fireflies (Yale Cabaret); DICK: After Melville (Dixon Place); Approaching Power Collision (Fisher Center); and co-design of Salome: Woman of Valor (Vancouver Chutzpah Festival). Anatar Marmol-Gagne (Puppet

Designer) is originally from Caracas, Venezuela. She holds an M.F.A. in puppet arts from the University of Connecticut, and has as a B.A. in English and creative writing from Hunter College, New York. Her strong background in art, dance, writing, fiber, and fabrication all come together seamlessly with her love for puppetry. As a puppeteer, Anatar has trained at the National Puppetry Conference at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, taught children’s puppet workshops, performed in puppet slams and festivals, as well as curated and founded the Pinned & Sewtured Puppet Slam in New Haven, Connecticut.

Phuong Nguyen (Costume

Designer) is a second-year M.F.A. candidate at Yale School of Drama.

Jeanine Tesori (Music) Broadway

musicals include Fun Home (2015 Tony Award Winner, Pulitzer finalist); Violet; Caroline, or Change; Shrek the Musical; Thoroughly Modern Millie; Twelfth Night (Lincoln Center Theater); John Guare’s A Free Man of Color; Mother Courage (Delacorte Theater). She has received five Tony nominations, three OBIE Awards, and three Drama Desk Awards. Her operas include The Lion, the Unicorn and Me; Blizzard on Marblehead Neck; and an upcoming collaboration with Tazewell Thompson, Blue (Glimmerglass). She is the founding artistic director of Encores! OffCenter and the founding creative director of the non-profit A BroaderWay, an arts empowerment program for young women. Tesori received the Einhorn Mentorship Award by Primary Stages for her exceptional work with young artists.

She is a lecturer in music at Yale and on faculty at Columbia University.

The Benjamin Mordecai III Production Fund, established by

a graduate of the School, honors the memory of the Tony Award-winning producer who served as Associate Dean and Chair of the Theater Management Department at Yale School of Drama from 1993 until his death in 2005. During his tenure as Yale Rep’s Managing Director alongside Dean/Artistic Director Lloyd Richards, 1982–1993, he developed a model of professional

producing that changed the course of new play development in the American theatre. His 25 Broadway credits included Tony Kushner’s Angels in America, as well as work by Anna Deavere Smith, Athol Fugard, David Henry Hwang, Terrence McNally, Robert Schenkkan, and perhaps most significantly August Wilson, with whom he collaborated on each of the ten plays in the epic 20th Century Cycle.
