About Tonight’s Guest Artist Gil Evans commented that “everything Paul Lieberman plays sounds right,” and multiple reviewers named the saxophonist, flutist, and former UMass faculty member’s 2011 CD “Ibeji” to their best-of lists, calling it “stunning, heartfelt, and emotional,” and writing "Lieberman, [who] is a soulful player on any instrument, conveying deep emotional content...demonstrates his instrumental mastery and also reveals himself as a formidable composer.

Ibeji is a hell of an accomplishment."

Paul toured for two years with Brazilian jazz legends Airto & Flora Purim, and then lived in Rio de Janeiro for four years as Brazil’s first call. More recently, he’s performed around the globe as a leader, as Music Director of Jaimoe’s Jasssz Band (led by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame member and Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winning Allman Brothers drummer), as featured guest soloist with Arturo O’Farrill’s Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, and with the Young@Heart Chorus, and recorded solos alongside Hubert Laws and Nestor Torres on Ali Ryerson’s Jazz Flute Big Band CD. He has performed or recorded with Pat Metheny, George Benson, Jaco Pastorius, David Sanborn, The Allman Brothers, Paquito D’Rivera, Hermeto Pascoal, Milton Nascimento, Djavan, and many others.

In addition to touring and recording, Paul lectures on Brazilian music and its African and European influences, gives clinics and master classes on jazz improvisation, and is a member of the Deerfield Academy faculty. His foundation-supported edutainment project “Voyages on the Black Atlantic” uses music from New Orleans’ Mardi Gras and Rio de Janeiro’s Carnaval to teach school children about the vital African roots of our music and culture. Paul has a BA from Yale and an MM from UMass Amherst, is a D’Addario Performing Artist and plays JodyJazz saxophone mouthpieces. For more information see www.paullieberman.com.
