Texts & Translations Widmung (Dedication) Text by Friedrich Rückert Du meine Seele, du mein Herz, Du meine Wonn’, o du mein Schmerz, Du meine Welt, in der ich lebe, Mein Himmel du, darein ich schwebe, O du mein Grab, in das hinab ich ewig meinen Kummer gab! Du bist die Ruh, du bist der Frieden, Du bist vom Himmel mir beschieden, Daß du mich liebst, macht mich mir wert, Dein blick hat mich vor mir verklärt, Du hebst mich liebend über mich, Mein guter Geist, mein bess’res Ich!
You my soul, you my heart, You my joy, o you my pain, You my world, in which I live, My heaven, you, in which I soar, O you my grave, to which I have forever given my sorrows! You are rest, you are peace, You are bestowed upon me from heaven. That you love me makes me worthy, Your gaze has transfigured me, You lift me lovingly above myself, My good spirit, my better self!
Your soul is a chosen landscape charmed by maskers and bergamasks, playing the lute and dancing and almost sad beneath their fantastic disguises!
They all sing in a minor key of victorious love and the opportune life. They do not seem to believe in their happiness, and their song mingles with the moonlight,
with the calm moonlight, sad and lovely, which makes the birds dream in the trees and make the fountains sob in ecstasy, the great slender fountains amid the marble statues.
The Composer’s Aria (from Ariadne auf Naxos) Libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal Sein wir wieder gut! Was ist denn Musik?
Let us be reconciled! I see everything now with different eyes! The depths of existence are immeasurable! My dear friend! There is so much in the world that cannot be expressed in speech. The poets set down fine words, yes, And yet – courage is in me! Courage, friend! The world is lovely and not fearsome to the courageous! What is, then, music? Music is a holy art, to bring together all kinds of courage, like cherubim around a luminous throne! And therefore it is the holiest of the arts. Holy music!
