Cornflowers

Kornblumen nenn ich die Gestalten, die milden mit den blauen Augen, die, anspruchslos in stillem Walten, den Tau des Friedens, den sie saugen aus ihren eigenen klaren Seelen, mitteilen allem, dem sie nahn, bewußtlos der Gefühlsjuwelen, die sie von Himmelshand empfahn.

Dir wird so wohl in ihrer Nähe, als gingst du durch ein Saatgefilde, durch das der Hauch des Abends wehe, voll frommen Friedens und voll Milde.

Cornflowers are what I call the figures, the mild ones with blue eyes, those, the undemanding in quiet duty, the dew of peace, they draw from their clear souls, telling everyone, whom they approach, unconscious of their precious feelings, which have been received from Heaven’s hand.

You will feel so comfortable when they are near, as if you went through a cornfield, through which the breath of evening wafts, full of holy peace and gentleness.

Mohnblumen sind die runden, rotblutigen gesunden, die sommersproßgebraunten, die immer froh gelaunten, kreuzbraven, kreuzfidelen, tanznimmermüden Seelen; die unter'm Lachen weinen und nur geboren scheinen, die Kornblumen zu necken, und dennoch oft verstecken die weichsten, besten Herzen, im Schlinggewächs von Scherzen; die man, weiß Gott, mit Küssen ersticken würde müssen, wär' man nicht immer bange, umarmest du die Range, sie springt ein voller Brander aufflammend auseinander.

Poppies are the round, red blooded, healthy girls, the freckled ones, the ones always in a happy mood, well behaved, perky, tirelessly dancing souls, who cry while laughing and seem to be born, to tease the cornflowers, and yet often hide, the softest, best hearts, amongst the climbing vines of jokes; that one, God knows, would suffocate with kisses, if one were not always afraid, that if you hug the minx she might spring apart into flames.

Aber Epheu nenn' ich jene Mädchen mit den sanften Worten, mit dem Haar, dem schlichten, hellen um den leis' gewölbten Brau'n, mit den braunen seelenvollen Rehenaugen, die in Tränen steh'n so oft, in ihren Tränen grade sind unwiderstehlich; ohne Kraft und Selbstgefühl, schmucklos mit verborg'ner Blüte, doch mit unerschöpflich tiefer treuer inniger Empfindung können sie mit eigner Triebkraft nie sich heben aus den Wurzeln, sind geboren, sich zu ranken liebend um ein ander Leben: an der ersten Lieb'umrankung hängt ihr ganzes Lebensschicksal, denn sie zählen zu den seltnen Blumen, die nur einmal blühen.

But ivy is the name I call those girls with the soft words, with the sleek, light hair and slightly arched brows, with brown, soulful, doe eyes, who stand in tears so often, in her tears are irresistible; without strength and self confidence, unadorned with hidden flowers, but with inexhaustible deep true and inner feeling, they can never, with their own driving force, lift themselves out of the roots, they are born to grow lovingly for another life: at the first love affair hangs her whole life’s fate because they are among the rare flowers, that only bloom once.

Do you know the flower, the mythical, celebrated water lily?

She weighs her see-through, colorless head on her ethereal, slim stems, it blooms on a reed pond, in the grove guarded by the swan, who circles her.

She only reveals herself to the moon, which it shares a silver shimmer in common: so it blossoms, the magical sister of the stars, swarmed by the dreamy dark moth, who longs from afar at the edge of the pond, and they never reach her.
