Artist Profiles Louis Hayes, drums and leader Born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1937, Louis Hayes is considered one of the iconic drummers in modern Jazz. He was surrounded by music from childhood, playing his first set of drums at age 10. He made a strong impact on the Detroit Jazz scene with notables such as Yusef Lateef, Curtis Fuller, and Ernie Farrell, until he was called to New York at the tender age of 18. It was pianist Horace Silver who asked Louis to join his group that really launched his career in 1956 which yielded five classic albums. He then joined saxophonist Cannonball Adderley and his quintet which yielded many years of musical excellence, followed by becoming a member of the Oscar Peterson Trio where he performed in concerts with jazz icons Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and more. He spent the next several decades leading or co-leading groups which included musicians such as Cedar Walton, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Dexter Gordon, and others. He toured with pianist McCoy Tyner for several years. He led a legacy band paying tribute to Cannonball Adderley for 12 years and his current project is an acknowledgement to the legendary Horace Silver who gave him his first start. His discography numbers more than 400 albums and CDs from artists as varied as Cannonball Adderley, Horace Silver, John
