Artist Profiles Ignacio Berroa Ignacio Berroa has been recognized as one of the greatest drummers of our times. He was honored by inclusion in the 2011 Mp3 compilation titled “Jazz Drumming Legends,” which features some of the most renowned drummers in Jazz history. Ignacio Berroa was born in Havana, Cuba, on July 8, 1953. He began his musical education at age 11 at the National School of Arts and subsequently at Havana’s National Conservatory, beginning his professional career in 1970. By 1975, Ignacio had become Cuba’s most sought-after drummer. In 1980, he left his country during the Mariel boatlift and settled in New York City, where he met the great Cuban musician Mario Bauza, who introduced him to Dizzy Gillespie. In August 1981, Gillespie invited Ignacio to join his quartet. Ignacio Berroa also took part in all the important bands Gillespie assembled during that decade such as The Dizzy Gillespie 70th Anniversary Big Band, The Dizzy Gillespie All Stars Big Band, and the Grammy Award-winning United Nations Orchestra. This relation lasted until Dizzy’s death. Jazz Legend Dizzy Gillespie best defined Ignacio as: “... the only Latin drummer in the world in the history of American music that intimately knows both worlds: his native Afro Cuban music as well as Jazz.” As an author and a renowned educator Ignacio Berroa made his mark with the instructional video “Mastering the Art of Afro-Cuban Drumming” as well as the books Groovin’ in Clave and A New Way of Groovin’. He also conducts clinics and master classes around the world.
Ignacio has recorded and played with musicians of the stature of McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea, Wynton Marsalis, Freddie Hubbard, Clark Terry, Lou Donaldson, Jackie McLean, Jimmy Heath, James Moody, Jon Faddis, Slide Hampton, Michael Brecker, Milt Jackson, Jaco Pastorius, Ron Carter, Charlie Haden, Tito Puente, Mario Bauzá, Lalo Schifrin, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Danilo Perez, Michel Camilo, Eliane Elias, Chico Bouarque, Gilberto Gil, Ivan Lins, Joao Bosco, Lenny Andrade, Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, WDR Big Band, and BBC Big Band.
Martin Bejerano “Add Martin Bejerano to the expanding roster of hot young pianists that stretches from Hiromi Uehara and Eldar Djangirov to Robert Glasper and Taylor Eigsti…” – Jazz Times Acclaimed pianist and composer Martin Bejerano has performed and recorded with numerous jazz luminaries including Roy Haynes, Christian McBride Band, Dave Holland, Pat Metheny, Ignacio Berroa, Ron Carter, Dafnis Prieto, Brian Lynch, Russell Malone, Adam Nussbaum, Lonnie Plaxico, John Faddis, Roy Hargrove, Marcus Strickland, Kevin Mahogony, and Lauren Kinhan, performing at most of the major jazz clubs, festivals and venues around the world. An award-winning bandleader, Martin’s trio has performed at such notable venues as Symphony Space, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, The Jazz Gallery, Barquisimeto Jazz Festival, El Hatillo Jazz Festival, St. Petersburg Jazz Festival, Festival Miami, and Lucerne Piano Off-Stage Festival.
Ellington Jazz Series His most recent recording, Trio Miami, was selected as Downbeat Magazine’s “Editor’s Choice”, and he was recently awarded his second New Jazz Works grant from Chamber Music America, as well as composing grants and commissions from the Dranoff 2 Piano Foundation and Sonos Chamber Orchestra. Martin is a tenured professor and heads the jazz piano studio at the acclaimed University of Miami Frost School of Music, and is currently touring with Roy Haynes, the Ignacio Berroa Trio, Jonathan Kreisberg Quartet, and Argentinian vocalist Roxana Amed, as well as his own group.
Josh Allen A native of Atlanta, bassist Josh Allen relocated to New York City in 2016 after living and performing in Miami since 2007. Josh has performed across the U.S. as well as in venues throughout the Caribbean, South America, Europe, and Japan. Josh attended the University of Miami Frost School of Music, where he performed for three years with the internationally recognized Frost Concert Jazz Band. The vibrant multicultural music scene in Miami helped Josh to grow into a very versatile bassist, equally at home playing acoustic and electric bass, as well as many different styles of music. Currently Josh is pursuing a Master’s degree from the prestigious Manhattan School of Music in New York City, as well as making a name for himself performing regularly in venues throughout New York.
