Artist Profiles • Notes on the Program Contemporaneous (New York City), and Sinfonietta Riga (Latvia). Auznieks’s I Exist As I Am, which was broadcast on classical music radio stations world-wide, represented Latvia at the UNESCO International Rostrum of Composers in Finland. Currently pursuing a doctor of musical arts degree at the Yale School of Music, his most recent recognitions include fellowships from the American Academy of Fontainebleau and the Aspen Music Festival. program note Grace Many of my favorite pieces are rigorously constructed using strict processes and infinite reduction in search of the essential. Instead of focusing on a musical motive, can I examine, deconstrue, and research a particular affect in the same way one beholds a musical idea? And, perhaps more importantly, can such an approach yield a moving and generous experience? This piece is also a thank-you note to my composition professors: Hannah Lash, David Lang, Aaron Jay Kernis, Christopher Theofanidis, and Martin Bresnick. biography Alishan Gezgin Alishan Gezgin is a composer living in New Haven, Connecticut. His projects include Nous, a multimedia cantata for soprano, string quartet, and electronics premiered inside James Turrell’s “Twilight Epiphany” light installation in Houston, as well as a work for Thai traditional instruments at the Burapha International
Music and Performing Arts Festival in Bangsaen, Thailand, where he was a composer-in-residence. He received a bachelor of music degree in composition from Rice University and is currently pursuing an master of music degree at the Yale School of Music, where he studies with Martin Bresnick, Hannah Lash, and Christopher Theofanidis. biography Sophie Cash Sophie Cash is a second-year master of music degree candidate at the Yale School of Music, where her teachers have included Hannah Lash, Christopher Theofanidis, and David Lang. program note Ghost Ship We are the Ghost Ship. Roaming wraiths, remnants of wreckage and ruin. Residue. Wrongs not quite righted, sights not quite sighted. We are the Ghost Ship. biography Fjóla Evans Fjóla Evans is a Canadian/Icelandic composer and cellist. Her work draws inspiration from the behaviors of natural phenomena as well as the droning lilt of Icelandic folk music. Commissions and performances have come from musicians such as Bang on a Can All-Stars pianist Vicky Chow, Quince Contemporary Vocal Ensemble, and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. Her work has been featured at the MATA Festival, Ung Nordisk Musik,
Artist Profiles • Notes on the Program and the American Composers Orchestra’s SONiC Festival. As a performer, she has presented her own work at the Cluster Festival of New Music, (le) poisson rouge, and at Toronto’s Music Gallery. Fjóla has participated in residencies at the Banff Centre for the Arts and KulturKontakt Austria, among others. She has studied composition with Julia Wolfe, cello performance with Matt Haimovitz, and is currently pursuing graduate studies at the Yale School of Music. program note Lung I love the dual idea of a lung as a really fragile organ, but also as a rugged balloon that keeps on expanding and contracting no matter what we do. In the piece, the players of the orchestra work together to create a kind of lung: a pulsating, biological, musical mass. While I was writing Lung, I was thinking a lot about the contemporary art museum in Graz, Austria, which is this amazing blobular building which looks a lot like an organ, maybe a lung or a stomach. It’s really gross and wonderful! When you look at the skyline of Graz, the art museum seeps over the surrounding medieval architecture, kind of polluting it with its slime. I want the piece to feel like that — a kind of uncontainable, constantly transforming hulk. biography Eli Greenhoe Eli Greenhoe is a composer from Brooklyn, New York. His music has been performed by such groups as the Brooklyn Symphony
Orchestra, Manhattan School of Music Symphony, and SEM ensemble, among others. Recent performances include orchestral premieres conducted by George Manahan and Bruno Ferrandis, respectively, and works commissioned and premiered by Aki Takahashi and Thomas Piercy, William Lang (of loadbang), and members of Yarn/Wire. Upcoming projects include a new work for loadbang, and a commission from the violin/viola duo andPlay. Eli has twice (2013, 2016) been a finalist in the ASCAP Morton Gould Competition and has received honorable mention recognition from both the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and loadbang in their respective calls for scores. Additionally, upon graduating from the Manhattan School of Music, Mr. Greenhoe was awarded both the Nicholas Flagello award for excellence in composition and the Carl Kanter prize for orchestral music. For three summers, from 2013 to 2015, Mr. Greenhoe was a composition fellow at the Yellow Barn Young Artists Program in Putney, Vermont. He has also been in residence at the Ostrava Days composer workshop in Ostrava, Czech Republic (2015), and the Hotel Pupik artists colony in St. Lorenzen bei Schefling, Austria (2014). In the summer of 2017, at the invitation of composer Aaron Jay Kernis, he attended the Next Festival of Emerging Artists as a composition fellow. Eli Greenhoe received his bachelor of music degree from the Manhattan School of Music in 2016, where he studied with Reiko Füting. He is currently pursuing his master of music degree at the Yale School of Music with Aaron Jay Kernis. He received additional training at the Eastman School of Music,
Artist Profiles • Notes on the Program where he worked primarily with Carlos Sanchez-Gutierrez. program note Wrest Wrest is a work for orchestra that takes as its impetus the phenomenology of sleep — the way that we drift through liminal spaces towards the unknown — and the things we carry with us without understanding why. It is dedicated to the memory of my grandmother, Elizabeth Ann Greenhoe. biography Liliya Ugay Described as “particularly evocative,” “fluid and theatrical ... the music [that] makes its case with immediacy”(The Arts Fuse, Boston) as well as both “assertive and steely,” and “lovely, subtle writing” (Kozinn, The Wall Street Journal), the works of composer and pianist Liliya Ugay have been performed in many countries around the globe. A recipient of the 2016 Charles Ives Scholarship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the 2017 Horatio Parker Memorial prize from the Yale School of Music, Ugay has collaborated with the Nashville Symphony, Albany Symphony, New England Philharmonic, Yale Philharmonia, Raleigh Civic Symphony, Aspen Contemporary Ensemble, Molinari Quartet, Antico Moderno, Omnibus ensemble, and Paul Neubauer among others. Her music has been featured at the Aspen, American Composers, New York Electroacoustic Music, June in Buffalo, and Darmstadt New Music festivals, as well as the 52nd
Venice Biennale. For 2017–2018, Ugay has been selected as a resident composer of the American Lyric Theater, for which she’s developing a new opera. In addition, Liliya is a founder and artistic director of Silenced Voices, a concert series that promotes the works of neglected composers from the Soviet era. Originally from Uzbekistan, Liliya is currently a doctor of musical arts candidate at the Yale School of Music studying with Aaron Jay Kernis and David Lang. program note To the Lost World To the Lost World, commissioned by Peter Askim and the Raleigh Civic Symphony for a concert dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Russian Revolution, marks this date in a special way. It expresses the nostalgia and cherishes the most precious souvenirs of the simple life of ordinary Soviet people. The piece does not bear and does not mean to evoke any political implications.
