William Purvis, horn
Allan Dean, trumpet
William Purvis pursues a multifaceted career both in the United States and abroad as horn soloist, chamber musician, conductor, and educator. A passionate advocate of new music, he has participated in numerous premieres including horn concerti by Peter Lieberson, Bayan Northcott, Krzysztof Penderecki (New York premiere), and Paul Lansky; horn trios by Poul Ruders and Paul Lansky; Sonate en Forme de Préludes by Steven Stucky; and recent premieres by Elliott Carter: Retracing II for Solo Horn and Nine by Five with the New York Woodwind Quintet. He is a member of the New York Woodwind Quintet, the Yale Brass Trio, and the Triton Horn Trio, and is an emeritus member of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. Mr. Purvis has been a frequent guest artist with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and the Boston Chamber Music Society, and has collaborated with many of the world’s most esteemed string quartets, including the Juilliard, Tokyo, Orion, Brentano, Mendelssohn, Sibelius, Daedalus, and Fine Arts string quartets. He has recorded extensively on numerous labels including Deutsche Grammophon, Sony Classical, Naxos, Koch, and Bridge. Mr. Purvis is currently the Professor in the Practice of Horn and Chamber Music at the Yale School of Music, where he is also the coordinator of winds and brasses and serves as director of the Yale Collection of Musical Instruments.
Allan Dean is Professor of Trumpet (Adjunct) at the Yale School of Music and currently performs with the Summit Brass, St. Louis Brass, and the Yale Brass Trio. In the early music field he was a founding member of Calliope: A Renaissance Band and the New York Cornet and Sacbut Ensemble. Dean was a member of the New York Brass Quintet for 18 years and freelanced in the New York City concert and recording field for more than twenty years before joining the faculty at Indiana University in 1982. Upon the retirement of the New York Brass Quintet in 1984, Dean joined the St. Louis Brass. In 1989 he moved back to the northeast to join the Yale faculty. At Yale, Dean coaches brass chamber music and directs the Yale Cornet and Sacbut Ensemble in addition to teaching trumpet. Dean performs and teaches each summer at the Yale Summer School of Music/Norfolk Chamber Music Festival. He is a frequent soloist with Keith Brion’s New Sousa Band. Dean has also appeared at the Spoleto and Casals festivals, the Banff Centre (Canada), the Orford Arts Centre (Canada), Musiki Blekinge (Sweden), the Curitiba Music Festival (Brazil), and the Morella Festival (Spain). He can be heard playing both modern trumpet and early brass on more than eighty recordings on most major labels including RCA, Columbia, Nonesuch, Summit, and others. On early instruments he has recorded with Calliope, the New York Cornets and Sacbuts, the Waverly Consort, the Ensemble for Early Music, and the Smithsonian Chamber Players.

He has also previously served on the faculties of the Manhattan School of Music, the Hartt School, and the Eastman School. Scott Hartman, trombone Scott Hartman began his chamber music career as a member of the famed Empire Brass and with that group alone performed in all fifty states. In addition to his role as trombonist with the Yale Brass Trio, Scott presently is a member of Proteus7, Summit Brass, the Brass Band of Battle Creek, the Millennium Brass, and Four of a Kind. Scott has been a featured performer with many major symphony orchestras in the United States – including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, and National Symphony Orchestra – and abroad, Mr. Hartman has been a soloist with such orchestras as the BBC Orchestra, the New Japan Philharmonic, the Caracas Symphony, the Simone Bolivar Symphony, the National Symphony of Taiwan, and the Korean Orchestra in Seoul, Korea. Mr. Hartman heads the trombone department at the Yale School of Music, and each summer he performs and coaches brass chamber music at the Yale Summer School of Music/ Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, the Chautauqua Music Festival, and the Raphael Mendez Institute.
Mihae Lee, piano For more than two decades, pianist Mihae Lee has been captivating audiences throughout North America, Europe, and Asia in solo recitals and chamber music concerts, appearing at such venues as Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Jordan Hall, Berlin Philharmonie, Academia Nationale de Santa Cecilia in Rome, Warsaw National Philharmonic Hall, and Taipei National Hall. Praised by the Boston Globe for her “simply dazzling” playing, she has been an artist member of the Boston Chamber Music Society since 1987, and a member of the Triton Horn Trio with violinist Ani Kavafian and hornist William Purvis. She has premiered and recorded works by such composers as Gunther Schuller, Paul Lansky, Henri Lazarof, Michael Daugherty, and Ned Rorem. In addition, she has been a guest artist with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and Speculum Musicae; has performed regularly at Bargemusic in New York; and has collaborated with the Muir, Cassatt, and Manhattan string quartets. Ms. Lee appears frequently at numerous international festivals, including the Dubrovnik, Groningen, Great Woods, Amsterdam, Chestnut Hill Concerts, Rockport, Music from Angel Fire, Norfolk, Sebago-Long Lake, Bard, Mainly Mozart, OK Mozart, and Seattle chamber music festivals. Born in Seoul, Korea, Ms. Lee made her professional debut at age fourteen with the Korean National Orchestra after becoming the youngest grand-prize winner

at the prestigious National Competition held by the President of Korea. After coming to the United States on a scholarship from the Juilliard School’s Pre-College Division in 1972, she continued to win awards, including first prize in the Kosciuszko Foundation Chopin Competition and the Juilliard Concerto Competition. Ms. Lee holds Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from the Juilliard School and an Artist Diploma from the New England Conservatory, studying with Martin Canin and Russell Sherman, respectively. She has released compact discs on the Bridge, Etcetera, EDI, Northeastern, and BCMS labels.
