Artist Profiles

Peter Frankl, piano Pianist Peter Frankl made his London debut in 1962 and his New York debut with the Cleveland Orchestra under George Szell in 1967. Since that time he has performed with many of the world’s finest orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, Concertgebouw, Israel Philharmonic, Orchestre de Paris, all the London orchestras, and the major American orchestras.

He has collaborated with such eminent conductors as Abbado, Boulez, Davis, Haitink, Maazel, Masur, Muti, Salonen, and Solti, and his world tours have taken him to Japan, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. He has appeared over twenty times at London’s BBC Promenade Concerts and has been a regular participant at the Edinburgh, Cheltenham, Aldeburgh, Verbier, Kuhmo, and Casals Festivals.

In the United States, Peter Frankl has been a regular guest artist at festivals including Aspen, Chautauqua, Marlboro, Norfolk, Ravinia, Santa Fe, and Yellow Barn. For many years the Frankl-PaukKirshbaum Trio traveled the world. His many chamber music partners have included Kyung Wha Chung, whom he partnered internationally over a number of years, and the Tokyo, Takács, Guarneri, Bartók, Fine Arts, Lindsay, and Amadeus quartets. He has given master classes all over the world, including the Royal Academy and Royal College in London, the Liszt Academy in Budapest, Van Cliburn Institute in Texas, and in Beijing, Hong Kong, and Seoul.

Among his recordings are the complete works for piano by Schumann and Debussy, Bartók and Chopin solo albums, a Hungarian anthology, concertos and four-hand works by Mozart, the Brahms piano

concertos, trios, and violin and clarinet sonatas, Bartók pieces for violin and piano, and the piano quintets by Brahms, Schumann, Dvořák, Martinů, and both Dohnányis. His CD with flutist Ransom Wilson, Works for Flute and Piano, was recently released on the Nimbus label.

In recognition of his artistic achievements, Mr. Frankl was awarded the Officer’s Cross by the Hungarian Republic, and on his seventieth birthday he was given the Middle Cross, one of the highest civilian awards in Hungary for his lifetime artistic achievement in the world of music. He is an honorary professor of the Liszt Academy and has been on the Yale School of Music faculty since 1987. In October 2015, on his eightieth birthday, the School of Music awarded him the prestigious Gustave Stoeckel Award.

Stephen Taylor, oboe Oboist Stephen Taylor holds the Mrs. John D. Rockefeller III solo oboe chair with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. He is also solo oboe with the New York Woodwind Quintet, the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, the St. Luke’s Chamber Ensemble (where he is co-director of chamber music), the American Composers Orchestra, the New England Bach Festival Orchestra, the renowned contemporary music group Speculum Musicae, and plays as co-principal oboe with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. He appears regularly as soloist and chamber musician at such major festivals as Spoleto, Caramoor International Music Festival, Aldeburgh, Bravo!

with Orpheus of Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante for winds as the “Best New Classical Recording.” Included among his more than 200 other recordings are premiere recordings of the Wolpe Oboe Quartet; Elliott Carter’s Oboe Quartet, for which Mr. Taylor received a Grammy nomination; and works of André Previn. Trained at the Juilliard School with teachers Lois Wann and Robert Bloom, Mr. Taylor is a member of its faculty as well as of SUNY Stony Brook and the Manhattan School of Music.

The Fromm Music Foundation at Harvard University awarded him a performer’s grant in 1981. Mr. Taylor joined the faculty of the Yale School of Music in the fall of 2005.

David Shifrin, clarinet

Germany. His recordings (on Delos, DGG, Angel/EMI, Arabesque, BMG, SONY, and CRI) continue to garner praise as well as awards, and he has received three Grammy nominations. Sought after as a chamber musician, he appears frequently with such distinguished artists as the Guarneri, Tokyo, and Emerson String Quartets and Wynton Marsalis.

Mr. Shifrin continues to broaden the repertoire for clarinet and orchestra by championing the works of 20th- and 21st-century American composers including, among others, John Adams, Joan Tower, Bruce Adolphe, Ezra Laderman, Lalo Schifrin, David Schiff, John Corigliano, Bright Sheng, and Ellen Taaffe Zwilich.

One of only two wind players to have been awarded the Avery Fisher Prize since the award’s inception in 1974, clarinetist David Shifrin is in constant demand as an orchestral soloist, recitalist, and chamber music collaborator. He has performed with orchestras including the Dallas, Seattle, Houston, Milwaukee, Detroit, Denver, and Memphis Symphonies, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, and the Philadelphia and Minnesota orchestras, as well as with orchestras in Germany, Italy, Switzerland, and Taiwan. Shifrin has served as principal clarinetist with the American Symphony Orchestra (under Stokowski), with the Cleveland Orchestra, Honolulu, and Dallas symphonies, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, and the New York Chamber Symphony.

An artist member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center since 1989, Mr. Shifrin served as its artistic director from 1992 to 2004. Along with his work at CMSLC, Mr. Shifrin is also the artistic director of Chamber Music Northwest in Portland, Oregon. David Shifrin has been a professor at the Yale School of Music since 1987. He has also served on the faculties of the Juilliard School, University of Southern California, University of Michigan, Cleveland Institute of Music, and University of Hawaii. Mr. Shifrin has been on the Yale faculty since 1987 and has been artistic director of the Oneppo Chamber Music Series at Yale and Yale in New York since 2008.

a doctorate by the Juilliard School. He has made nine appearances as soloist in New York’s Carnegie Hall playing concertos, sinfonias concertantes, and even a solo ballad with the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band.

He joined the Yale faculty in 1994.

Morelli’s recent CD, Romance and Caprice, with pianist Gilbert Kalish, follows two previous solo CDs on MSR Classics: Bassoon Brasileiro with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and Yale faculty guitarist Ben Verdery; and Baroque Fireworks, which features harpsichordist Kenneth Cooper and Yale faculty oboist Stephen Taylor.

Gramophone magazine proclaimed, “Morelli’s playing is a joy to behold,” and the American Record Guide stated: “The bassoon playing on this recording is a good as it gets.” Of his DG recording of the Mozart Bassoon Concerto with Orpheus, Fanfare Magazine added that this recording “reset a reviewer’s standards at too high a level for comfort in a world more productive of ordinary music making.” The Orpheus CD Shadow Dances, which features Frank Morelli, won a 2001 Grammy Award.

A prolific chamber musician, Frank Morelli has appeared with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center on numerous occasions, including at the White House for the final State Dinner of the Clinton presidency. He has participated in many major music festivals, including Yale’s own Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, and Marlboro, Banff, and Music@Menlo.

He is a member of Festival Chamber Music and the woodwind quintet Windscape, in residence at the Manhattan School of Music and with whom he has recorded two recent CDs, one featuring the music of Antonín Dvořák and the other music of

Maurice Ravel (which includes his transcriptions of Mother Goose and Valses nobles et sentimentales).

Chosen to succeed his teacher, Stephen Maxym, Mr. Morelli also serves on the faculties of the Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music, and SUNY Stony Brook. Morelli’s students are active in major orchestras and on important faculties throughout the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Asia, and Europe. He is the editor of Stravinsky: Difficult Passages for Bassoon, a landmark excerpt book for bassoon and contrabassoon published by Boosey & Hawkes, and has several transcriptions for bassoon and woodwind quintet to his credit, published by Trevco Music. His popular website, morellibassoon.com, was designed and built by his son, Anthony.

William Purvis, horn William Purvis pursues a multifaceted career both in the U.S. and abroad as horn soloist, chamber musician, conductor, and educator. A passionate advocate of new music, he has participated in numerous premieres including horn concerti by Peter Lieberson, Bayan Northcott, Krzysztof Penderecki, and Paul Lansky; horn trios

by Poul Ruders and Paul Lansky; Sonate en Forme de Préludes by Steven Stucky; and Elliott Carter’s Retracing II for Solo Horn and Nine by Five with the New York Woodwind Quintet. He is a member of the New York Woodwind Quintet, the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, the Yale Brass Trio, and the Triton Horn Trio, and is an emeritus member of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. A frequent guest artist with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and the Boston Chamber Music Society, Mr. Purvis has collaborated with

many of the world’s most esteemed string quartets, including the Juilliard, Tokyo, Orion, Brentano, Daedalus, Sibelius, Mendelssohn, and Fine Arts string quartets.

A Grammy Award winner, Mr. Purvis has recorded extensively on numerous labels including Deutsche Grammophon, Sony Classical, Naxos, Koch and Bridge. He is currently Professor in the Practice of Horn and Chamber Music at the Yale School of Music, where he is also coordinator of winds and brasses, and serves as director of the Yale Collection of Musical Instruments.

Scott Hartman, trombone Scott began his chamber music career as a member of the famed Empire Brass, and with that group alone he performed in all 50 states. In addition to his role as trombonist with the Yale Brass Trio, Scott presently is a member of Proteus7, Summit Brass, the Brass Band of Battle Creek, the Millennium Brass, and Four of a Kind.

Scott has been a featured performer with major United States symphony orchestras, including the Chicago Symphony, Boston Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, Detroit Symphony, San Francisco Symphony and National Symphony. Abroad, Mr. Hartman has been a soloist with orchestras such as the BBC Orchestra, the New Japan Philharmonic, the Caracas Symphony, the Simón Bolívar Symphony, the National Symphony of Taiwan, and the Korean Orchestra in Seoul.

Mr. Hartman heads the trombone department at Yale University and each summer, he performs and coaches brass chamber music at the Norfolk Chamber Festival, the Chautauqua Music Festival and the Raphael Mendez Institute.

Ani Kavafian, violin Violinist Ani Kavafian enjoys a prolific career as a soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician. She has performed with virtually all of America’s leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia, Cleveland, Detroit, and San Francisco Symphony Orchestras, and Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. A renowned chamber musician, she has performed with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center since 1979. Her solo recitals include performances at New York’s Carnegie and Alice Tully halls, as well as in major venues across the country.

Ani Kavafian serves as concertmistress of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra, with whom she recorded the Mozart violin concertos. She has participated in the Heifetz International Music Institute, Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival, Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, Great Lakes Festival, Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival, and Music from Angel Fire.

Kavafian appears frequently with her sister, violinist and violist Ida Kavafian. Together they have performed with the symphonies of Detroit, Colorado, Tucson, San Antonio, and Cincinnati, and have recorded the music of Mozart and Sarasate on Nonesuch.

With violist Barbara Westphal and cellist Gustav Rivinius, she is a member of the Trio da Salo, and with clarinetist David Shifrin and pianist Andre-Michel Schub formed the Kavafian-Schub-Shifrin Trio.

Along with cellist Carter Brey, she is coartistic director of the New Jersey chamber music series Mostly Music.

Ettore Causa studied at the International Menuhin Music Academy with Alberto Lysy and Johannes Eskar, and later at the Manhattan School of Music with Michael Tree. After teaching for many years at the International Menuhin Music Academy, Mr. Causa joined the faculty of the Yale School of Music in 2009. His recordings include two Claves CDs: one of the Brahms viola sonata and the other his transcription of Romantic pieces, which was awarded 5 Diapasons. Mr. Causa performs on a viola made for him by Frederic Chaudière in 2003.

Ole Akahoshi, cello

Italian-born violist Ettore Causa is praised for his exceptional artistry, passionate intelligence, and complete musicianship.

He was awarded both the Peter Schidlof Prize and the John Barbirolli Prize for the most beautiful sound at the Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition. Causa has made solo and recital appearances in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Zurich Tonhalle, Madrid National Auditorium, Salle Cortot (Paris), Tokyo Symphony Hall, and Teatro Colon, and has performed at festivals such as the Menuhin (Gstaad), Salzburg, Tivoli (Copenhagen), Prussia Cove (England), Savonlinna (Finland), Launadire (Canada), and Norfolk (CT) Festivals. A former member of the Aria Quartet and a current member of the

Cellist Ole Akahoshi from Germany enjoys a concert career before audiences in North and South America, Asia, and Europe in recitals, chamber music concerts, and as soloist with orchestras such as the Orchestra of St. Luke’s and Symphonisches Orchester Berlin. He has won numerous competitions, including Concertino Praga and Jugend Musiziert, and is a recipient of the Salon de Virtuosi fellowship award. Mr. Akahoshi has performed in Avery Fisher Hall, Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, Suntory Hall, Seoul Arts Center, Beijing, Shanghai and Taipei Concert Halls, Wigmore Hall, Wiener Musikverein, and Berliner Philharmonie.

His performances have been featured on CNN, NPR, WQXR, Korean Broadcasting, and the major German stations. He has

recorded for the Albany, New World, Calliope, Bridge, and Naxos labels. His most recent releases include the string quartet by Behzad Ranjbaran, and the Mendelssohn octet with Gil Shaham. Ole Akahoshi has collaborated with the Tokyo, Michelangelo, and Keller quartets and with Sarah Chang, Cho-Liang Lin, Elmar Oliveira, Leon Fleisher, Garrick Ohlsson, and Elizabeth Parisot, among many others.

He has served as faculty at the festivals in Banff, Norfolk, Brazil, and the GMMFS in Korea. He has given numerous classes, most recently at the conservatories in Beijing and Sichuan. Ole Akahoshi was the youngest student to be accepted by Pierre Fournier. He studied with Aldo Parisot at Yale and Juilliard, as well as Janos Starker at Indiana University; he served as teaching assistant for both Parisot and Starker. Ole Akahoshi is the principal cellist of the Sejong Soloists. In 1997 he joined the faculty of the Yale School of Music, where he is Assistant Professor of Cello.

Janna Baty, mezzo-soprano Praised by the Boston Globe for “a rich, viola-like tone and a rapturous, luminous lyricism,” mezzo-soprano Janna Baty enjoys an exceptionally versatile career.

She has sung with Boston Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Daejeon Philharmonic, Hamburgische Staatsoper, L’Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Tallahassee Symphony, Tuscaloosa Symphony, Longwood Symphony, Hartford Symphony, Orquesta Filarmónica de Bogotá, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Eugene Opera, Opera North, and Boston Lyric Opera. She has sung under the batons of James Levine, Seiji Ozawa, Michel Plasson, Carl Davis, Robert Spano, Steuart Bedford,

Stephen Lord, Stefan Asbury, Gil Rose, David Hoose, and Shinik Hahm, among numerous others. As a soloist, chamber musician, and recitalist, she has performed at festivals worldwide, including the Aldeburgh and Britten Festivals in England, the Varna Festival in Bulgaria, the Semanas Musicales de Frutillar Festival in Chile, and the Tanglewood, Norfolk, Monadnock, and Coastal Carolina festivals in the United States.

A noted specialist in contemporary music, Ms. Baty has worked alongside many celebrated composers, including John Harbison, Bernard Rands, Yehudi Wyner, Sydney Hodkinson, Peter Child, Reza Vali, Paul Salerni, and Paul Moravec, on performances of their music. Ms. Baty has enjoyed a long collaboration with Boston Modern Orchestra Project, and with them has recorded the critically lauded Vali: Folk Songs (sung in Persian); Lukas Foss’ opera Griffelkin; the world-premiere recording of Eric Sawyer’s Civil War-era opera Our American Cousin; and John Harbison’s Mirabai Songs. An alumna of Oberlin College and the Yale School of Music, she joined the faculty of the Yale School of Music in 2008.
