biography Dylan Mattingly Called “visionary magic”, composer Dylan Mattingly’s work is fundamentally ecstatic, committed to the extremes of human emotion, drawing from influences such as Thomas Adès, Joni Mitchell, and the microtonal folk singing of Polynesian choirs. Mattingly is the founding co-artistic director of Contemporaneous, and was previously the co-director of Formerly Known as Classical, a youth-run new music ensemble whose members play only music written in their lifetimes. Among the musicians who have performed Mattingly’s music are the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Cabrillo Festival Orchestra, the Berkeley Symphony, Contemporaneous, the Del Sol String Quartet, and many others. Mattingly holds a B.A. in Classical Greek and a B.M. in Music Composition from Bard College. He currently attends the Yale School of Music, where he studies with David Lang and is mentored as well in Berkeley by composer John Adams. program note

Auznieks has worked with Antico Moderno, Sandbox Percussion, David Kweksilber Big Band, Claron McFadden, Modelo62, Slagwerk Den Haag, Brendan Faegre Edge Ensemble, Orkest de Ereprijs, and the vocal groups Framest and Anima Solla. His chamber opera was featured in the Riga—European Capital of Culture 2014 festival and broadcast on national radio. His works have been performed at Beijing National Arts Centre, Shanghai City Theatre, and Amsterdam Muziekgebouw, and featured in Gaudeamus Muziekweek, Ereprijs YCM, Druskomanija, Riga A Capella Festival, New Music New Haven, and others. A scholarship recipient at the American Academy of Fontainebleau, France, Krists was also a composition fellow at the 2015 Bennington (Vermont) Chamber Music Conference. Currently he is working on his second opera, called NeoArctic, in collaboration with Danish multi-media company Hotel Pro Forma. The opera is scheduled to be performed in the Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen and the Mikhail Chekhov Riga Russian Theatre, Latvia, in the fall of 2016.

The works of Michael Gilbertson have been described as “elegant” and “particularly beautiful” by the New York Times, “vivid, tightly woven” and “delectably subtle” by the Baltimore Sun, and “genuinely moving” by the Washington Post. Gilbertson holds degrees from The Juilliard School and the Yale School of Music. Gilbertson’s works have been programmed by ensembles including the Minnesota Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony, Juilliard Orchestra, Washington National Opera, San Francisco Chamber Orchestra, Grand Rapids Symphony, Symphony in C, New England Philharmonic, Cheyenne Symphony, Yale Philharmonia, Aspen Contemporary Ensemble, and professional choirs including Musica Sacra, The Crossing, and The Esoterics.
Liliya Ugay is an award-winning composer and pianist. Among her competition prizes are the Edward Grieg International Composers Competition, National MTNA Young Artist Composition Competition, Pre-Art International Composition Competition (Switzerland), Crystal Camerton International Competition of Young Composers (Moscow Conservatory/ Union of Composers of Russia), 14th International Beethoven Piano Sonatas Competition, and many more. Her compositions range from traditional classical ensembles to musical theater and electronic music. Ugay’s works have been featured at many festivals including the 45th Darmstadt Summer Courses of New Music, June in Buffalo, Oslo International Grieg Festival, Boston New Music Initiative, and the 52nd Venice Biennale.
Gilbertson’s music has earned five Morton Gould Awards, a Charles Ives Scholarship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and a BMI Student Composer Award. Gilbertson’s music can be heard in the 2006 documentary Rehearsing a Dream, which was nominated for an Academy Award. program note Low Hanging Fruit Low Hanging Fruit, inspired by Genesis, attempts to capture the essence of temptation.
Originally from Uzbekistan, Liliya studied composition and piano at the Uspensky Special Music School before coming to the U.S. to study piano with Alexander Kobrin at Columbus State University as a Woodruff Scholarship recipient. Currently, she is a Master of Music degree candidate at Yale School of Music studying with Martin Bresnick, Christopher Theofanidis, and Aaron Jay Kernis. program note Drawn in the Fog Drawn in the Fog was inspired by the Soviet animation film Hedgehog in the Fog by Yuri Norstein. Whenever I watched it as a child and even as an adult I always would question myself: what if Hedgehog were not

saved from the river by the secret someone, and how did Bear feel waiting and calling for the Hedgehog while the latter was wondering in the foggy forest? Through such thoughts I expressed my personal attitude to this masterpiece. The timbre of a clarinet has a particular importance in the original score of the Hedgehog in the Fog; therefore, it seemed appropriate to use the clarinet and electronics as the instrumentation for this idea. I used the sounds from the film as the only source for the electronics part of this composition. biography Paul Lanksy Paul Lansky is one of the pioneers of computer music but in recent years he has been turning his attention to instrumental music. Recent works include Ricercare Plus for string quartet, written for the Brentano Quartet; With the Grain, a guitar concerto written for David Starobin; Shapeshifters for two pianos and orchestra (for Quattro Mani), Etudes and Parodies (for horn, violin, and piano), written William Purvis (winner of the 2005 International Horn Society Competition); and Threads, written for Sō Percussion. Lansky has recently been writing orchestral music and was composer in residence with the Alabama Symphony in the 2009–2010 season. His orchestral work Imaginary Islands, commissioned by the Alabama Symphony, was premiered in May 2010. A CD of his orchestral music was released on Bridge Records in 2012. Comix Trips is published by Carl Fischer LLC. For many years Lansky was on the faculty at Princeton University, where he is William Shubael Conant Professor of Music Emeritus.
program note Comix Trips Comix Trips was commissioned in 2008 by the ensemble Relâche and can best be described as a kind of divertimento. The title of each movement is derived from famous comics’ expressions over the past 85 years, and the character of each movement roughly reflects the sense of the utterance. See if you can match the sources: Peanuts, Captain Marvel, Alfred E. Newman, Little Orphan Annie.
