Nun ist die Welt so trübe, Der Weg gehüllt in Schnee.

As a stranger I came, As a stranger I depart.

May was kind to me, With many bouquets of flowers.

The girl spoke of love, The mother even of marriage.

Now the world is so bleak, The path covered in snow.

Ich kann zu meiner Reisen Nicht wählen mit der Zeit, Muß selbst den Weg mir weisen In dieser Dunkelheit.

Es zieht ein Mondenschatten Als mein Gefährte mit, Und auf den weißen Matten Such’ ich des Wildes Tritt.

II. The Weather Vane

Der Wind spielt mit der Wetterfahne Auf meines schönen Liebchens Haus.

Da dacht ich schon in meinem Wahne, Sie pfiff den armen Flüchtling aus.

The wind plays with the weather vane On my beautiful beloved’s house.

I thought in my delusion That it whistled to mock the poor fugitive.

Am Brunnen vor dem Tore Da steht ein Lindenbaum; Ich träumt in seinem Schatten So manchen süßen Traum.

At the fountain, by the gate, There stands a linden tree; I have dreamt in its shadows So many sweet dreams.

Ich schnitt in seine Rinde So manches liebe Wort; Es zog in Freud’ und Leide Zu ihm mich immer fort.

I cut in its bark So many loving words; In joy and sorrow, I was always strongly drawn to it.

Ich mußt’ auch heute wandern Vorbei in tiefer Nacht, Da hab’ ich noch im Dunkel Die Augen zugemacht.

I had to pass it today, too, In the depths of night, And even in the darkness, I had to close my eyes.

Und seine Zweige rauschten, Als riefen sie mir zu: Komm her zu mir, Geselle, Hier find’st du deine Ruh’!

And its branches rustled, As if they were calling to me, “Come here, to me, friend, Here you will find your rest!”

Die kalten Winde bliesen Mir grad ins Angesicht; Der Hut flog mir vom Kopfe, Ich wendete mich nicht.

With a hard, frozen crust You have covered yourself, Lying cold and motionless, Outstretched in the sand.

In deine Decke grab’ ich Mit einem spitzen Stein Den Namen meiner Liebsten Und Stund’ und Tag hinein:

On your surface I engrave With a sharp stone The name of my beloved, And the hour and the day:

Den Tag des ersten Grußes, Den Tag, an dem ich ging; Um Nam’ und Zahlen windet Sich ein zerbroch’ner Ring.

The date of our first greeting, The date I went away.

Around the name and numbers A broken ring is entwined.

VIII. Backward Glance

Es brennt mir unter beiden Sohlen, Tret’ ich auch schon auf Eis und Schnee, Ich möcht’ nicht wieder Atem holen, Bis ich nicht mehr die Türme seh’.

The soles of my feet burn, Though I walk on ice and snow; I do not wish to draw breath again Until I can no longer see the towers.

Hab’ mich an jeden Stein gestoßen, So eilt’ ich zu der Stadt hinaus; Die Krähen warfen Bäll’ und Schloßen Auf meinen Hut von jedem Haus.

I tripped on every stone, In my rush to leave the town; The crows threw snowballs and hailstones At my hat from every house.

Wie anders hast du mich empfangen, Du Stadt der Unbeständigkeit!

An deinen blanken Fenstern sangen Die Lerch’ und Nachtigall im Streit.

How differently you received me, Town of inconstancy!

At your shining windows The lark and nightingale competed in song.

Die runden Lindenbäume blühten, Die klaren Rinnen rauschten hell, Und ach, zwei Mädchenaugen glühten — Da war’s gescheh’n um dich, Gesell!

The round linden trees blossomed, The gutters gurgled with clear water, And, ah, two beloved eyes glowed — Then, friend, you didn’t stand a chance.

Kommt mir der Tag in die Gedanken, Möcht’ ich noch einmal rückwärts seh’n, Möcht’ ich zurücke wieder wanken, Vor ihrem Hause stille steh’n.

When that day comes into my thoughts, I would like to look back one more time, I would like to stumble back again To stand before her house.

IX. Irrlicht

IX. Will-o’-the-Wisp

In die tiefsten Felsengründe Lockte mich ein Irrlicht hin: Wie ich einen Ausgang finde, Liegt nicht schwer mir in dem Sinn.

Into the deepest chasms A will-o’-the-wisp lured me: How I might find a way out Does not weigh heavily on my soul.

Bin gewohnt das Irregehen, ‘s führt ja jeder Weg zum Ziel: Uns’re Freuden, uns’re Leiden, Alles eines Irrlichts Spiel!

I am accustomed to going astray, Every way leads to the goal: Our joys, our pains, They are all a will-o’-the-wisp’s game!

Durch des Bergstroms trock’ne Rinnen Wind’ ich ruhig mich hinab, Jeder Strom wird’s Meer gewinnen, Jedes Leiden auch sein Grab.

Through a mountain stream’s dry bed I calmly wend my way, Every stream will find the sea, And every sorrow its grave.

Nun merk’ ich erst, wie müd’ ich bin, Da ich zur Ruh’ mich lege: Das Wandern hielt mich munter hin Auf unwirtbarem Wege.

Only now do I notice for the first time how weary I am, Because I lay down to rest.

Walking kept me cheerful On the inhospitable road.

Die Füße frugen nicht nach Rast, Es war zu kalt zum Stehen; Der Rücken fühlte keine Last, Der Sturm half fort mich wehen.

My feet sought no rest, It was too cold to stand still, My back felt no burden, The storm helped to blow me onwards.

In eines Köhlers engem Haus Hab’ Obdach ich gefunden; Doch meine Glieder ruh’n nicht aus: So brennen ihre Wunden.

In a collier’s narrow cottage Have I found shelter; But my limbs cannot relax, Their wounds burn so.

Auch du, mein Herz, in Kampf und Sturm So wild und so verwegen, Fühlst in der Still’ erst deinen Wurm Mit heißem Stich sich regen!

You too, my heart, in battle and storm So wild and daring, Now in the silence you feel for the first time your serpent, Stirring with its fierce sting.

Ich träumte von bunten Blumen, So wie sie wohl blühen im Mai; Ich träumte von grünen Wiesen, Von lustigem Vogelgeschrei.

I dreamt of brightly colored blossoms, Such as bloom in May, I dreamt of green meadows, Of merry bird calls.

Und als die Hähne krähten, Da ward mein Auge wach; Da war es kalt und finster, Es schrieen die Raben vom Dach.

And when the cocks crowed, My eyes awoke; Then it was cold and dark, Ravens cried from the roof.

Doch an den Fensterscheiben, Wer malte die Blätter da?

Ihr lacht wohl über den Träumer, Der Blumen im Winter sah?

But there on the windowpanes, Who painted those leaves?

So zieh ich meine Straße Dahin mit trägem Fuß, Durch helles, frohes Leben, Einsam und ohne Gruß.

So I wend my way, Dragging my feet Through bright, joyful life, Alone and without greeting.

Ach, daß die Luft so ruhig!

Ach, daß die Welt so licht!

Als noch die Stürme tobten, War ich so elend nicht.

When the storms were still raging I was not so miserable.

Von der Straße her ein Posthorn klingt.

Was hat es, daß es so hoch aufspringt, Mein Herz?

From the street a posthorn sounds.

Die Post bringt keinen Brief für dich.

Was drängst du denn so wunderlich, Mein Herz?

The post brings no letter for you.

Why surge you then so marvelously, My heart?

XIV. Der greise Kopf

XIV. The Gray Head

Der Reif hatt’ einen weißen Schein Mir übers Haar gestreuet; Da glaubt’ ich schon ein Greis zu sein Und hab’ mich sehr gefreuet.

The frost has cast a white sheen Over my hair.

I thought I was already an old man, And I rejoiced.

Doch bald ist er hinweggetaut, Hab’ wieder schwarze Haare, Daß mir’s vor meiner Jugend graut — Wie weit noch bis zur Bahre!

But it soon melted away, And once again I have black hair, So that I shudder at my youth.

How far it still is to the grave!

Vom Abendrot zum Morgenlicht Ward mancher Kopf zum Greise.

Wer glaubt’s? und meiner ward es nicht Auf dieser ganzen Reise!

From sunset to the light of dawn Many a head turns gray.

Can you believe it? And mine hasn’t Through this whole journey!

XV. Die Krähe

XV. The Crow

Eine Krähe war mit mir Aus der Stadt gezogen, Ist bis heute für und für Um mein Haupt geflogen.

A crow has been with me Since I left the town, And even up until now Has been flying around my head.

Krähe, wunderliches Tier, Willst mich nicht verlassen?

Meinst wohl, bald als Beute hier Meinen Leib zu fassen?

Crow, strange creature, Don’t you want to leave me?

Do you intend soon To grip my body in your claws?

Nun, es wird nicht weit mehr geh’n An dem Wanderstabe.

Krähe, laß mich endlich seh’n, Treue bis zum Grabe!

I do not have much further to go With my walking stick.

Crow, let me finally see Faithfulness unto the grave.

XVI. Letzte Hoffnung

XVI. Last Hope

Hie und da ist an den Bäumen Manches bunte Blatt zu seh’n, Und ich bleibe vor den Bäumen Oftmals in Gedanken steh’n.

Here and there on the trees A few colorful leaves can still be seen, And I often stand before the trees Lost in thought.

Schaue nach dem einen Blatte, Hänge meine Hoffnung dran; Spielt der Wind mit meinem Blatte, Zitt’r’ ich, was ich zittern kann.

I look at one leaf, I hang my hopes on it — If the wind plays with my leaf I tremble to the depths of my being.

Ach, und fällt das Blatt zu Boden, Fällt mit ihm die Hoffnung ab; Fall’ ich selber mit zu Boden, Wein’ auf meiner Hoffnung Grab.

Ah, and if the leaf falls to the ground, My hopes fall with it.

I fall to the ground myself, And weep on the grave of my hope.

Es bellen die Hunde, es rasseln die Ketten; Es schlafen die Menschen in ihren Betten, Träumen sich manches, was sie nicht haben, Tun sich im Guten und Argen erlaben;

Dogs bark, chains rattle; The people sleep in their beds, Dreaming of many a thing they have not, Finding refreshment in good and bad things;

Und morgen früh ist alles zerflossen.

Je nun, sie haben ihr Teil genossen Und hoffen, was sie noch übrig ließen, Doch wieder zu finden auf ihren Kissen.

And tomorrow morning, everything has vanished.

Still, they have enjoyed their share, And hope that what remains to them, Might still be found on their pillows.

Bellt mich nur fort, ihr wachen Hunde, Laßt mich nicht ruh’n in der Schlummerstunde!

Ich bin zu Ende mit allen Träumen.

Was will ich unter den Schläfern säumen?

Wie hat der Sturm zerrissen Des Himmels graues Kleid!

Die Wolkenfetzen flattern Umher im matten Streit.

How the storm has torn apart The sky’s gray cloak!

The tattered clouds flutter About in weary conflict.

A light dances amiably before me, I follow it here and there; I follow it gladly, even though I know That it lures the wanderer.

Ach! wer wie ich so elend ist, Gibt gern sich hin der bunten List, Die hinter Eis und Nacht und Graus Ihm weist ein helles, warmes Haus Und eine liebe Seele drin — Nur Täuschung ist für mich Gewinn!

Ah, anyone as wretched as I Would gladly give himself up to the beguiling gleam, That, beyond ice and night and terror, Reveals to him a bright, warm house, And a beloved soul within — Mere delusion is a blessing to me!

XX. Der Wegweiser

XX. The Signpost

Was vermeid’ ich denn die Wege, Wo die ander’n Wand’rer gehn, Suche mir versteckte Stege Durch verschneite Felsenhöh’n?

Why do I avoid the routes Where other travelers go, And seek out hidden paths Through snowy mountain passes?

Habe ja doch nichts begangen, Daß ich Menschen sollte scheu’n — Welch ein törichtes Verlangen Treibt mich in die Wüstenei’n?

I have done nothing [wrong] That I should shun other people — What foolish longing Pushes me into the wilderness?

Weiser stehen auf den Wegen, Weisen auf die Städte zu, Und ich wand’re sonder Maßen Ohne Ruh’ und suche Ruh’.

Signposts stand along the way, Pointing towards towns, And I wander ceaselessly, Without rest, seeking rest.

Auf einen Totenacker hat mich mein Weg gebracht; Allhier will ich einkehren, hab’ ich bei mir gedacht.

Ihr grünen Totenkränze könnt wohl die Zeichen sein, Die müde Wand’rer laden ins kühle Wirtshaus ein.

To a graveyard has my journey brought me; Here will I rest, I thought to myself.

You green funeral wreaths must be the signs To invite the weary travelers into the cool inn.

Sind denn in diesem Hause die Kammern all’ besetzt?

Bin matt zum Niedersinken, bin tödlich schwer verletzt.

O unbarmherz’ge Schenke, doch weisest du mich ab?

Nun weiter denn, nur weiter, mein treuer Wanderstab!

Are all the rooms in this house taken, then?

I am weary to the point of collapse, I am mortally wounded.

O pitiless tavern, do you still send me away?

Onwards, then, my trusty staff.

XXII. Mut

XXII. Courage

Fliegt der Schnee mir ins Gesicht, Schüttl’ ich ihn herunter.

Wenn mein Herz im Busen spricht, Sing’ ich hell und munter.

Snow flies in my face, And I shake it off.

When my heart speaks in my breast I sing loudly and merrily.

Höre nicht, was es mir sagt, Habe keine Ohren; Fühle nicht, was es mir klagt, Klagen ist für Toren.

I do not hear what it tells me, I have no ears.

I do not feel what it laments, Lamenting is for fools.

Lustig in die Welt hinein Gegen Wind und Wetter!

Three suns saw I standing in the sky, Long and hard I stared at them; And they also stood there so firmly, As if they would never leave me.

Ach, meine Sonnen seid ihr nicht!

Schaut Andern doch ins Angesicht!

Ja, neulich hatt’ ich auch wohl drei; Nun sind hinab die besten zwei.

Ah, you are not my suns!

Stare at others in the face, then!

Yes, until recently I also had three; Now the best two have left me.
