Artist Profiles

Carol Jantsch · tuba Praised by the Philadelphia Inquirer as having “a sound as clear and sure as it [is] luxurious,” tubist Carol Jantsch has been principal tuba of the Philadelphia Orchestra since 2006. She won the position while still a senior at the University of Michigan, becoming the first female tuba player in a major symphony orchestra.

Raised in a musical family, Carol began piano lessons at age six and began studying euphonium at Interlochen Arts Camp at age nine. After switching to tuba, she attended the prestigious arts boarding high school Interlochen Arts Academy, graduating as salutatorian of her class. She continued her studies at the University of Michigan under the tutelage of Fritz Kaenzig. During this time, Carol won first place in four international solo tuba competitions and received laureates at several others. After winning her position with the Philadelphia Orchestra in February of 2006, she returned to Michigan to complete her Bachelor of Music degree, graduating summa cum laude.

Carol has appeared as a soloist with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra, Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra, and the United States Marine Band, among others. She has performed in Carnegie’s Zankel Hall with the Musical Olympus Festival, has

appeared on NPR’s radio series From The Top, and has been a featured artist at various brass festivals in Finland, Germany, Canada, and the United States. In 2009, Carol was honored with a Best of Philly award from Philadelphia Magazine.

Carol has given master classes in Europe, Asia, and North America. She is on the faculty of the Curtis Institute of Music, Temple University Boyer College of Music, and Manhattan School of Music. In 2012, Carol joined the Yale School of Music faculty as Lecturer in Tuba.

on numerous commercial recordings. As a pianist, he has appeared at festivals and in cities throughout the world. Djupstrom was born in St. Paul, Minnesota (USA) in 1980 and studied music formally at the University of Michigan and the Curtis Institute of Music. Other training included fellowships at the Tanglewood Music Center, the Aspen Music Festival, and the Brevard Music Center, as well as studies in Paris with Betsy Jolas. He currently lives in Philadelphia, where he teaches at the Curtis Institute of Music.

David Lang · composer

Born in Los Angeles in 1957, David Lang holds degrees from Stanford University and the University of Iowa, and received the D.M.A. from the Yale School of Music in 1989. He has studied with Jacob Druckman, Hans Werner Henze, and Martin Bresnick.

His music is published by Red Poppy (ASCAP) and is distributed worldwide by G. Schirmer, Inc. David Lang joined the Yale faculty in 2008.

The music of David Lang has been performed by major musical, dance, and theatrical organizations throughout the world, including the Santa Fe Opera, the New York Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, Kronos Quartet, Nederlands Dans Theater, and the Royal Ballet, to name a few, and has been performed in the most renowned concert halls and festivals in the United States and Europe. Lang is well known as co-founder and co-artistic director of New York’s legendary music festival, Bang on a Can.In 2008, Lang was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Music for The Little Match Girl Passion, commissioned

Notes on the Program

press release by David Lang I wrote press release in 1991 for Evan Ziporyn. When you compose for one person, you can’t get all the colors that you’d have with an ensemble or orchestra, so you have to imagine some sort of interesting problem. I wanted to do something that was really rhythmic. The original idea behind this piece was that of a high melody alternating with a low bass line, so that you get a high pop and a low pop switching back and forth as fast as possible, and these two worlds coexist. I wanted the upper melody to be recognizable and the bottom bass line to be recognizable, to be a real bass line, a driving funk thing. In classical music, the bass is only there to support the melody, which is where the action is. But the bass line is the place where funk music really shines. Who has the best bass lines in the business? I am a big James Brown fan, and, I thought, if you want a bass line, you got to go to James. So I made the key changes sound like James Brown. Because of the way the bass clarinet works, I thought you’d have to press the keys down to make all the low notes, and you’d release the keys to make the high notes… press release. I was really proud of myself because I thought I had made this funny joke, and then of course Evan said, ‘’You know, a lot of those high notes you play with all your fingers down, and a lot of those low notes you play with all your fingers up.’’ But I didn’t think it was worth it to change the title.
