Artist Profiles

john and richard contiguglia, piano American identical twins Richard and John Contiguglia are among the most acclaimed and versatile duo-pianists in the world today. Since their London debut in 1962, which the critic of the London Daily Telegraph described as setting “a new standard for this intimate form of musicmaking,” Richard and John have shared their artistry with audiences throughout the world.

Many of their recordings of Liszt and Bartók duos on the Connoisseur Society label were modern-day premieres and/or first recorded performances. Their Beethoven/Liszt Ninth Symphony recording received the Liszt Society of Budapest’s Grand Prix du Disque Award in the first record competition of the Society’s history in 1975 and was No. 1 on the Billboard Charts after its release. Recently they received their second Grand Prix Award from the Liszt Society, following the 2012 release of their Liszt-Bartók CD on the Gemini CD Classics label. It contains Liszt operatic fantasies on Don Giovanni, Norma, La Sonnambula, and Russlan und Ludmila and a live recorded performance from Holland of Bartók’s epic Suite for Two Pianos, Op. 4B. Their performances at the Award Presentation Ceremony on Oct. 22, 2012 can be viewed on YouTube.

The summer of 2011 took them to Australia to participate in Townsville’s 21st Festival of Chamber Music, with its special emphasis on the music of Franz Liszt and Percy Grainger. In 2008, they were the featured pianists for the annual celebration of Dame Myra Hess Day at London’s National Gallery.

The most extraordinary event of the twins’ youth occurred in their hometown of Auburn, New York, when, as 12 year olds, they performed on a recital with the legendary pianist-composer, Percy Grainger. Following the event, Grainger

presented the young boys with many of his two-piano scores, some with touching dedications: “to Richard and John Contiguglia, from their admiring colleague”; “in admiration of their splendid playing”; “in tonal fellowship.”

Richard and John have performed with major orchestras throughout the world including the Cleveland Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Atlanta Symphony, the National Symphony, the Toronto Symphony, the Boston Pops, the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra and the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. They have been heard, both in recital and with orchestra, in numerous prestigious venues, including New York’s Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, Boston’s Symphony Hall, Washington’s Kennedy Center, Chicago’s Orchestra Hall, London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall and Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw.

The twins graduated in the top 1% of their class at Yale, with identical averages of 91%, receiving their Bachelor of Arts degrees summa cum laude, with philosophical orations. Two years later, they received Master of Music degrees from the Yale Graduate School of Music at the top of their class. Subsequently, they studied for four years in London with the great British pianist, Dame Myra Hess.

choha kim, violin Violinist Choha Kim enjoys a varied career as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral performer. Born in Seoul, Korea, she made her debut with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra at age 13. She has subsequently played with the St. Petersburg Symphony in Russia and has given solo recitals at the Kumho Prodigy Recital

Series and the Saturday Concert Series at the National Museum of Korea as the recipient of an award from the Korean Ministry of Culture. An avid chamber musician, Choha was a Fellow at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, and at Keshet Eilon where she was featured on a documentary aired on Israeli Channel 8. As part of the Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra, she has toured Germany, Spain, and Istanbul, appearing in the Konzerthaus Berlin, the Musikhalle Hamburg, and the Alhambra Palace. She has been a member of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra since 2013. Choha has a Bachelor of Music degree from the Curtis Institute of Music where she studied with Joseph Silverstein, Shmuel Ashkenasi and Victor Danchenko. She received her Master of Music degree from the Yale School of Music as a student of Syoko Aki, winning the Broadus Erle Prize.

henry kramer, piano Winner of the 2014 Astral Artists National Auditions and the 2013 Woolsey Concerto Competition at the Yale School of Music, Henry Kramer has been lauded as “triumphant” and “thrilling” (The New York Times) and “technically effortless” (La Presse, Montreal). Originally from Cape Elizabeth, Maine, he was a prizewinner in the 8 th National Chopin Competition and the 2011 Montreal International Music Competition.

In 2012, Henry garnered the top prize and the prize for the Best Performance of Strauss Lieder at the 6 th China Shanghai International Piano Competition. He has pursued his love of chamber music as a two-time fellow at the Steans Institute at the Ravinia Festival in Chicago, which invited him to perform in their 2014 national tour alongside renowned violinist Miriam Fried and fellow alumni. Upcoming appearances include the

Verbier Festival Academy in Switzerland and performances of Beethoven and Rachmaninoff concerti with the Portland Symphony and Eastern Connecticut Symphony. A graduate of the Juilliard School, he is currently enrolled in the Master of Musical Arts program at the Yale School of Music, where he received the Charles S. Miller Prize for the most outstanding firstyear pianist. He studies with Boris Berman.

emily workman, soprano Lyric soprano Emily Workman is currently pursuing her Master of Music degree at Yale’s prestigious opera program. In the 2012-2013 season, Ms. Workman performed as Fiordiligi in Mozart’s Così fan tutte at Brigham Young University under the direction of Kory Katseanas. In the 2013-2014 season, Ms. Workman performed as Antonia in Offenbach’s Les contes d’Hoffmann, Susannah in Floyd’s Susannah, and Mimì under the direction of Giuseppe Grazioli and Michael Gieleta in Yale Opera’s Shubert Theater production of Puccini’s La Bohème. The fall of 2014 will see Ms. Workman performing as Sister Angelica in Puccini’s Suor Angelica with the New Haven Symphony.

Ms. Workman holds a bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University where she received a talent scholarship and won the Nancy Peery Marriott Singer of the Year prize.

esther park, piano Pianist Esther Park has performed as a soloist with orchestras and in recitals across the United States as well as Asia and major European cities.

New Jersey Symphony, the Juilliard Symphony, and the Yale Philharmonia. Ms. Park gave a five-city recital tour in Korea, and has performed at the Juilliard Theater, Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, Salle Cortot in Paris, and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. Born in Pusan, Korea in 1984, Ms. Park has received her Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree from the Juilliard School, studying with Dr. Yoheved Kaplinsky. Ms. Park also studied at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater (Hannover) under the tutelage of Bernd Goetzke, and has since received the Artist Diploma and the Master of Musical Arts Degree at the Yale School of Music under the guidance of Boris Berman.
