Allan Dean · trumpet

Scott Hartman · trombone

Allan Dean is Professor of Trumpet (Adjunct) at the Yale University School of Music and is currently performing with Summit Brass, St. Louis Brass, and the Yale Brass Trio. In the early music field he was a founding member of Calliope: A Renaissance Band and the New York Cornet and Sacbut Ensemble. Dean was a member of the New York Brass Quintet for 18 years and freelanced in the New York City concert and recording field for over 20 years before joining the faculty of Indiana University in 1982. Upon retirement of the New York Brass Quintet in 1984, Dean joined the St. Louis Brass. In 1989 he moved back to the Northeast to join the Yale faculty. At Yale, Dean coaches brass chamber music and directs the Yale Cornet and Sacbut Ensemble in addition to teaching trumpet.

Scott Hartman, trombone, joined the Yale faculty in 2001. Mr. Hartman received his B.M. and M.M. degrees from the Eastman School of Music and began his career by joining the Empire Brass Quintet and the Boston University faculty in 1984. As a trombone soloist and with his various chamber groups, Mr. Hartman has taught and played concerts throughout the world and in all fifty states. He regularly performs and records with the Yale Brass Trio, Proteus 7, the Millennium Brass, the Brass Band of Battle Creek, and the trombone quartet Four of a Kind.

Mr. Hartman spends several weeks each summer in residence at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival.

Dean performs and teaches each summer at the Mendez Brass Institute and the Norfolk (CT) Chamber Music Festival. He is a frequent soloist with Keith Brion’s New Sousa Band. Dean has also appeared at the Spoleto and Casals Festivals, the Banff Centre (Canada), the Orford Arts Centre (Canada), Musiki Blekinge (Sweden), the Curitiba Music Festival (Brazil), and the Morella Festival (Spain). He can be heard playing both modern trumpet and early brass on over 80 recordings on most major labels including RCA, Columbia, Nonesuch, Summit, and others. On early instruments he has recorded with Calliope, The New York Cornets and Sacbuts, The Waverly Consort, The Ensemble for Early Music, and the Smithsonian Chamber Players.

He has also previously served on the faculties of the Manhattan School of Music, the Hartt School, and the Eastman School.

William Purvis · horn William Purvis pursues a multifaceted career both in the U.S. and abroad as horn soloist, chamber musician, conductor, and educator. A passionate advocate of new music, he has participated in numerous premieres including horn concerti by Peter Lieberson, Bayan Northcott, Krzysztof Penderecki, and Paul Lansky; horn trios

by Poul Ruders and Paul Lansky; Sonate en Forme de Préludes by Steven Stucky; and recent premieres

by Elliott Carter, Retracing II for Solo Horn and Nine by Five with the New York Woodwind Quintet. He is a member of the New York Woodwind Quintet, the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, the Yale Brass Trio, and the Triton Horn Trio, and is an emeritus member of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. A frequent guest artist with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and the Boston Chamber Music Society, Mr. Purvis has collaborated with many of the world’s most esteemed string quartets, including the Juilliard, Tokyo, Orion, Brentano, Daedalus, Mendelssohn, Sibelius, and Fine Arts string

quartets. A Grammy Award winner, Mr. Purvis has recorded extensively on numerous labels including Deutsche Grammophon, Sony Classical, Naxos, Koch and Bridge. He is currently Professor in the Practice of Horn and Chamber Music at the Yale School of Music, where he is also coordinator of winds and brasses, and serves as director of the Yale Collection of Musical Instruments.

Carol Jantsch · tuba Praised by the Philadelphia Inquirer as having “a sound as clear and sure as it [is] luxurious,” tubist Carol Jantsch has been principal tuba of the Philadelphia Orchestra since 2006. She won the position while still a senior at the University of Michigan, becoming the first female tuba player in a major symphony orchestra.

Raised in a musical family, Carol began piano lessons at age six and began studying euphonium at Interlochen Arts Camp at age nine. After switching to tuba, she attended the prestigious arts boarding high school Interlochen Arts Academy, graduating as salutatorian of her class. She continued her studies at the University of Michigan under the tutelage of Fritz Kaenzig. During this time, Carol won first place in four international solo tuba competitions and received laureates at several others. After winning her position with the Philadelphia Orchestra in February of 2006, she returned to Michigan to complete her Bachelor of Music degree, graduating summa cum laude.

Carol has appeared as a soloist with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra, Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra, and the United States Marine Band, among others. She has performed in Carnegie’s

Zankel Hall with the Musical Olympus Festival, has appeared on NPR’s radio series From The Top, and has been a featured artist at various brass festivals in Finland, Germany, Canada, and the United States. In 2009, Carol was honored with a Best of Philly award from Philadelphia Magazine.

Carol has given master classes in Europe, Asia, and North America. She is on the faculty of the Curtis Institute of Music, Temple University Boyer College of Music, and Manhattan School of Music. In 2012, Carol joined the Yale School of Music faculty as Lecturer in Tuba.

The album, along with further information, is available on her website. » www.caroljantsch.com Mihae Lee · piano For more than two decades pianist Mihae Lee has been captivating audiences throughout North America, Europe, and Asia in solo recitals and chamber music concerts, appearing in such venues as Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, Jordan Hall, Berlin Philharmonie, Academia Nationale de Santa Cecilia in Rome, Warsaw National Philharmonic Hall, and Taipei National Hall.

Praised by the Boston Globe for her “simply dazzling” playing, she has been an artist member of the Boston Chamber Music Society since 1987, and a member of the Triton Horn Trio with violinist Ani Kavafian and hornist William Purvis. She has premiered and recorded works by such composers as Gunther Schuller, Paul Lansky, Henri Lazarof, Michael Daugherty, and Ned Rorem. Lincoln Center and Speculum Musicae; has performed regularly at Bargemusic in New York; and has collaborated with the Muir, Cassatt, and Manhattan string quartets. Ms. Lee appears frequently at numerous international festivals, including the Dubrovnik, Groningen, Great Woods, Amsterdam, Chestnut Hill Concerts, Rockport, Music from Angel Fire, Norfolk, Sebago-Long Lake, Bard, Mainly Mozart, OK Mozart, and Seattle chamber music festivals.

Born in Seoul, Korea, Ms. Lee made her professional debut at the age of fourteen with the Korean National Orchestra after becoming the youngest grand prizewinner at the prestigious National Competition held by the President of Korea. After coming to the United States on a scholarship from The Juilliard School PreCollege in 1972, she continued to win awards, including first prize in the Kosciuszko Foundation Chopin Competition and the Juilliard Concerto Competition.

Ms. Lee holds a B.M. and M.M. from The Juilliard School and an Artist Diploma from the New England Conservatory, studying with Martin Canin and Russell Sherman respectively.

She has released compact discs on the Bridge, Etcetera, EDI, Northeastern, and BCMS labels.

Jean Laurenz · trumpet Jean Laurenz recently received her Masters Degree from Yale University and, before that, a BM from Northwestern University. At these universities she obtained degrees in Trumpet Performance and Choral Music Education. She has performed with professional artists and ensembles including the Hong Kong Philharmonic and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Trumpet Section. Jean has performed with major artists like Kanye West, Randy Brecker, members of the New York Philharmonic brass, and

American Idol winner Lee Dewyze. She has spent her summers performing in various orchestras including Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, Colorado College Music Festival, and the Round Top Festival Orchestra. Jean also spends her time working for Arlington Race Track where she plays the “Call to Post” before every race. Television appearances include reality TV show Undercover Boss, ABC 7 morning news, and Monsters in the Morning sports channel. Her primary teachers include Allan Dean, Barbara Butler, Charlie Geyer, Chris Martin.

Ezra Laderman · composer Ezra Laderman is a distinguished and widely performed composer. His twelve string quartets, eleven concertos, and eight symphonies are notable contributions to the repertory. His commissions have included works for the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony; and for the orchestras of Minnesota, Dallas, Louisville, Houston, Detroit, Albany, Denver, New Jersey, Indianapolis, Syracuse, and New Haven. He has written music for two Academy Award-winning films, six dramatic oratorios, music for dance, and seven operas, including Marilyn, based on the life of Marilyn Monroe, which premiered at the New York City Opera in 1993. He has written for such chamber ensembles as the Tokyo, Juilliard, Concord, Colorado, Lenox, Vermeer, Audubon, and Composers quartets and for soloists Yo-Yo Ma, Judith Raskin, Elmar Oliveira, Jean-Pierre Rampal, Samuel Baron, Sherrill Milnes, Emanuel Ax, Eugene List, Ronald Roseman, Bernard Garfield, and Ilana Vered, among many others.

Laderman was Dean of the Yale School of Music from 1989-1995 and is currently Professor of Music. He has been chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts composer-librettist

program, president of the American Music Center, director of the music program of the National Endowment for the Arts, president of the National Music Council, chairman of the board of the American Composers Orchestra, and president of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He has taught at Sarah Lawrence College and at the State University of New York at Binghamton. He has received three Guggenheim fellowships, the Rome Prize, and has had residencies at the Bennington Composers Conference, the American Academy in Rome, and at the Rockefeller Foundation at Bellagio.
