The Declassified is a cutting-edge chamber music society forging an integrated role for classical music in communities around the world. Based in New York City, The Declassified maintains a flexible roster of a new type of musician: virtuoso, arts advocate, and educator. They design residencies to reach audiences of broad scope, bringing creative concert experiences to schools, hospitals, prisons and bars, as well as major international concert halls.

The Declassified was founded in 2011 by alumni of The Academy — a program of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and the Weill Music Institute. Upon leaving this prestigious fellowship, the musicians were inspired not only to keep playing together but also to create an entrepreneurial model for artists who want to meaningfully engage with society. As The Academy’s Ensemble ACJW, the musicians of The Declassified presented residencies in Spain, Mexico, Iceland, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, Germany, and Japan. Appearing at Carnegie Hall, their performances as Ensemble ACJW were called “dazzling”

and “dynamic”; “categories be damned” (New York Times).

In The Declassified’s inaugural season, they designed acclaimed residencies in Iceland, South Carolina, Florida, and throughout New York City. Projects for the 2012–2013 season have included several return engagements to Iceland and South Carolina and new residencies in Mexico and Hong Kong, at conservatories including the Colburn and Juilliard Schools, and concert series at SUNY Purchase, Princeton, and Bargemusic. The Declassified maintains a close collaboration with Carnegie Hall, as resident artists on their Musical Connections program which supports their work this season in homeless shelters, hospitals, and at Sing Sing prison, and as a partner in planning and conducting national and international residencies on an ongoing basis.

Meena Bhasin is a captivating violist who is forging new roles for the classical musician. She is passionate about using music to spark cross-cultural dialogue. In recent seasons, Ms. Bhasin has designed Carnegie Hall residencies in Mumbai and Abu Dhabi collaborating with musicians and students from both cities. In her home town of New York City, Ms. Bhasin is a member of Lincoln Center’s Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra, a teaching artist for the New York Philharmonic, and a frequent performer with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s.

She also relishes collaborations across genres and has toured the U.S. as a soloist with legendary rock band Jethro Tull. Ms. Bhasin spent three years as a fellow in The Academy, the post-graduate leadership program of Carnegie Hall and the Juilliard School, where she taught and made frequent concert appearances on the Carnegie stages, across New York City, and around the world. Ms. Bhasin graduated as a Presser scholar from New England Conservatory and also holds a B.A. in international relations from Tufts University.

Praised as "dazzling" (New York Times) and "a fearless and inquisitive violinist" (San Francisco Classical Voice), Owen Dalby is hailed for his gripping interpretations of music from across the stylistic spectrum.

He is a co-founder of The Declassified.

Owen made his solo debut at Lincoln Center in 2010. His varied career involves frequent appearances as a member of the Orchestra of St. Luke's, Princeton Symphony, Ensemble ACJW, and the Metropolis Ensemble. He is the concertmaster of NOVUS NY, and can also be heard on baroque violin with Four Nations Ensemble, Clarion Music Society, and Trinity Baroque Orchestra and Choir.

Owen completed a three-year tenure in The Academy, a fellowship of Carnegie Hall and the Juilliard School.

Owen is regularly invited to perform chamber music at international festivals His chamber collaborators have included Daniel Hope, Dawn Upshaw, the Persian kamancheh virtuoso Kayhan Kalhor, and Simon Rattle. He is a native of Berkeley, California and received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Yale, where he studied with Syoko Aki.

david kaplan · piano

Double Bassist Brian Ellingsen’s playing has been hailed as “shocking and evocative” by the Philadelphia Enquirer, and Charleston Today has recently described him as “a double bass wizard.” As a soloist he has been featured at the Spoleto Festival USA and New Music Hartford, and placed in many competitions such as the International Society of Bassists Competition and the Van Rooy Competition. As a chamber musician he is a standing member of Ensemble ACJW and Le Train Bleu. He has also performed with the New York Chamber Soloists, the NOW Ensemble, Fifth House Ensemble, and Transit. As an orchestral musician, Brian has performed as principal of the Lucerne Festival Academy Orchestra, and in 2011 took part in a European tour with Ensemble Intercontemporain under the direction of Pierre Boulez. As an advocate for experimental music, Brian has collaborated with visual artists, dancers, and actors to bring their work to life through music and his own improvisations. Brian holds a bachelor's degree from the Hartt School and a master's from Yale.

David Kaplan, pianist, has been praised for his “grace and fire” by the Boston Globe, and

by The New York Times for “striking imagination and creativity.” Recent seasons have brought him as a recitalist throughout the nation and internationally. He has appeared as a guest soloist of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and has performed with Itzhak Perlman. David is a veteran of many chamber music festivals and series.

As a member of the New York-based Metropolis, Le Train Bleu, Declassified, and Ensemble ACJW, David has performed frequently in New York’s most exciting venues, from Zankel Hall to Le Poisson Rouge. Since 2011, Kaplan has been co-artistic director of Lyrica Chamber Music. Kaplan´s enthusiasm for contemporary music has led him to premiere dozens of works. He is currently candidate for the D.M.A. at Yale University.

Kaplan’s mentors include Claude Frank, Alfred Brendel, Richard Goode, and Emanuel Ax. As a Fulbright Scholar, he studied conducting with Lutz Köhler at the Universität der Künste in Berlin. Away from the keyboard, he devotes time to cartooning and cooking, and is mildly obsessed with classic cars.

Born into a musical family, Alicia Lee grew up in Michigan where she began playing clarinet at the age of 12. Alicia is the associate principal and E-flat clarinet player of the Santa Barbara Symphony. She maintains a busy freelance career throughout New York City, performing regularly with a variety of groups including Orpheus, The Knights, Ensemble ACJW, The Declassified, Wet Ink Ensemble, ICE, and Alarm Will Sound. She has performed at the Lucerne Festival, the Spoleto Festivals of Italy and the U.S., and Yellow Barn Music Festival, and had been in residence at the Marlboro Music Festival for the past several summers. She is a founding member of DZ4, an innovative wind quartet that has been actively expanding the repertoire of their genre by commissioning and performing works by some of today's most talented young composers.

Bassoonist and contrabassoonist Shelley Monroe Huang performs regularly across the United States and in China. Praised by the New York Times for "playing with superb agility and accuracy and with a full-bodied, chocolatey sound," Shelley has appeared as soloist with the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, Eastman Philharmonia, and New Music New Haven. As a concert bassoonist and contrabassoonist, Shelley has performed with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, American Composers Orchestra, and the Charlotte, Albany, New Haven, Princeton, and Delaware symphony orchestras.

Before completing her doctorate at SUNY Stony Brook under Frank Morelli, Shelley earned degrees from the Eastman and Yale Schools of Music. In recent years, Shelley has also appeared as contrabassoon fellow at the Aspen Music Festival, and as bassoon fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center and the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival. She is also an avid contemporary musician, recently performing Sofia Gubaidulina's Concerto for Bassoon and Low Strings, and giving the world premieres of Huang Ruo's Wind Blows… and Book of the Forgotten.

Alicia holds a B.A. in French Language and Literature from Columbia University, as well as additional degrees from the University of Southern California and the Colburn School.

Praised as one of the “standouts” among the many rising stars in Carnegie Hall’s critically acclaimed Ensemble ACJW, trumpeter Paul Murphy is passionate about drawing audiences deeply into the art of music. His work as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player has taken him to hundreds of cities and 18 countries throughout Asia, Europe, and the Americas. A cofounder and member of The Declassified, he has also performed with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, the International Contemporary Ensemble, the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, the American Symphony Orchestra, the New York Pops, and frequently tours with the Paragon Ragtime Orchestra. As a recording artist his work can be heard on major film and television soundtracks, including HBO’s Grammy-winning Boardwalk Empire.

Emily Popham Gillins, violin, has been blessed to travel the world as a soloist and chamber musician since her debut at age 11 with the Louisville Orchestra. As a member of Ensemble ACJW (2010–2012), she performed in venues ranging from Carnegie Hall to Riker’s Island Prison.

Emily has collaborated with artists such as Emanuel Ax and Rachel Barton Pine, and played backup strings for Harry Connick, Jr., Sting ,and Peter Gabriel. As first violinist of the Degas String Quartet, she performed at the Library of Congress, and toured North Carolina doing residency work at universities and elementary schools. While living in North Carolina, she found her husband and discovered the joy of playing in a bluegrass band. Emily is currently a member of IRIS orchestra, the New York Chamber Soloists, and Le Train Bleu. She lives in New York City with her husband Kevin, a woodwind and brass technician, and their French bulldog, Chutney.

Paul is proud to serve on the teaching artist faculty of the New York Philharmonic, and has helped to design projects and programming for Carnegie Hall’s Musical Connections program. Paul is a graduate of the Yale School of Music and St. Olaf College.

Icelandic cellist Sæunn Thorsteinsdóttir is a soloist, chamber musician, teaching artist and classical music advocate. Recently she premiered Daníel Bjarnason´s Bow to String for cello and orchestra with the Los Angeles Philharmonic conducted by John Adams, which the LA Times praised for her “emotional intensity”.

Andrew Norman is a composer of chamber and orchestral music. Andrew studied the piano and viola before attending the University of Southern California and Yale.

His teachers and mentors include Martha Ashleigh, Donald Crockett, Stephen Hartke, Stewart Gordon, Aaron Kernis, Ingram Marshall, and Martin Bresnick.

Following the release of her CD of the Britten Suites for Solo Cello on the Centaur Label, this season she performs in some of the world´s greatest halls including Carnegie Hall, Suntory Hall, and Disney Hall and will be heard live on Chicago´s WFMT on the Dame Myra Hess series. A graduate of The Cleveland Institute of Music and The Juilliard School, her principal teachers include Richard Aaron, Tanya Carey, and Joel Krosnick.

A lifelong enthusiast for all things architectural, Andrew writes music that is often inspired by forms and textures he encounters in the visual world and has been cited in the New York Times for its “daring juxtapositions and dazzling colors” and in the L.A. Times for its “Chaplinesque” wit.

Andrew is increasingly active as an orchestral composer, and his chamber music has been featured at numerous venues in recent seasons. He is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the 2005 ASCAP Nissim Prize, the 2006 Rome Prize, and the 2009 Berlin Prize. Andrew’s 30-minute string trio The Companion Guide to Rome was named a finalist for the 2012 Pulitzer Prize in Music.

Symposium on Music in Schools

This concert is presented as part of the 2013 Symposium on Music in Schools.

The Symposium on Music in Schools is held once every two years at the Yale School of Music. With support from the Yale College Class of 1957, the Symposium honors fifty teachers from around the country for their outstanding accomplishments teaching music in public schools.

For four days in June, distinguished music educators convene in New Haven to participate in a variety of workshops, discussions, and other events, culminating with the presentation of fifty Yale Distinguished Music Educator Awards at the closing banquet.

The first Symposium in 2007 brought together forty-five educators from nineteen states. The theme, Music: A Child’s Birthright, included curricular workshops, panel discussions with international music school and conservatory administrators, lectures by leading pedagogues in the field, and a recital by the renowned pianist Emanuel Ax. Roberta Guaspari, founder of the Opus 118 School of Music and the subject of the film Music of the Heart, gave an impassioned keynote address.

The 2009 Symposium hosted fifty Yale Distinguished Music Educators as well as the New Haven Public School music teachers. The Symposium focused on El Sistema, the Venezuelan music education system, and explored ways in which it

could be incorporated into American music education. Attendees discussed the role of the music teacher in the general classroom, using a New Haven collaboration as a case study. For the keynote address, Lucia Brawley ’02MFA (Yale School of Drama), an actor and blogger for the Huffington Post, spoke about the value of arts education in American culture.

The third Symposium in 2011 focused on two main themes: integrating music into the general classroom, and the relationship between visiting teaching artists and public school music teachers. Attendees were chosen from a pool of 330 nominees from forty-five states. Workshops included a demonstration of distance learning technology, and a talk by acclaimed cellist Yo-Yo Ma in conjunction with the International Festival of Arts & Ideas. The keynote speech was given by John Merrow, Education Correspondent for PBS NewsHour and President of Learning Matters.

The theme of this year’s symposium is The Role of Music in School Reform.

School reform is a potent topic throughout the country, and music can play an integral role in it. The keynote speaker is Anne Midgette ’86BA, the classical music critic of The Washington Post.
