artist profiles
Colin Brookes was born in Pittsburgh and began studying viola at age six. He studied in Pittsburgh with Carolyn Hills and Marylene Gingras-Roy. He is a winner of the Pittsburgh Concert Society, Symphony North Concerto Competition, Music For Mount Lebanon Competition, and Tuesday Musical Club. In 2011 he received a Bachelor of Music degree from the Juilliard School after studying with Heidi Castleman and Misha Amory. He has played in master classes and worked with such musicians as Gil Shaham, Sam Rhodes, Veda Kaplinsky, Steven Tenenbom, Ida Kavafian, Jutta Puchhammer, Hsin-Yun Huang, and the Tokyo String Quartet. Colin is currently in his first year of a Master in Music degree program studying with Ettore Causa.
Steven Chang began his studies at the age of six in his native Taiwan, where he served as concertmaster of the Taitung Symphony Orchestra and garnered first prize in Taiwan’s Youth Violin Solo Competition at the age of ten. Steven earned his Bachelor of Music degree from the Colburn School Conservatory of Music, where he studied with violin professor Robert Lipsett. An avid chamber musician, Steven has performed on the kmzt-lacma Sunday Night Live Broadcast series and with renowned musicians such as Paul Coletti, Bonnie Hampton, and John Perry. Steven has soloed with both the Crossroads and the Colburn School orchestras and received scholarships and fellowships from organizations such as the California Confederation of Women’s Club, the Dorothy Richard Starling Foundation, the Westside Committee of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Aspen Music Festival and School. Steven currently attends the Yale School of Music under the tutelage of Syoko Aki, and expects to get his Master of Music degree in May 2013.
Oboist Hsuan-Fong Chen is currently pursuing her Master of Music degree at the Yale School of Music, studying with Stephen Taylor. She received a Bachelor of Music degree from the Juilliard School, studying with Nathan Hughes and Elaine Douvas. Chen has won prizes in several competitions, including first prize at the 2003 National Oboe Competition in Taiwan and second prize at the New England Conservatory Preparatory School’s concerto competition. She was a finalist in the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s youth concerto competition and in the Assistant Principal audition of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra. Hsuan-Fong has been invited to summer festivals such as Boston University Institute of Tanglewood, Aspen Music Festival, and Pacific Music Festival. She will be attending Spoleto USA Festival this summer. Chen is also an accomplished pianist. In addition to winning numerous piano competitions, she and her teacher Da-Ming Zu were featured in one of the National Palace Museum’s historical films. In 2005 she received first prize at the American Fine Arts Festival, which led to a solo performance in Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall. She also won first prize in the Music Teacher’s National Association piano competition (MA) in 2005 and 2007.
Victor Fournelle-Blain is studying for his master’s degree at the Yale School of Music in Ani Kavafian’s studio. He has completed his Artist Diploma at the Montreal Conservatory in Johanne Arel’s studio, where he received Great Distinction for violin and chamber music. In 2011 he distinguished himself at the Prix d’Europe competition in Montreal, winning the John Newmark Prize as well as first prize in the strings category. In 2010 he won second prize in the OSM Standard Life competition and the TroisRivières Symphony Competition. Victor has also won several first prizes at the Canadian Music
Competition and in regional competitions. Victor has performed with the Trois-Rivières Symphony Orchestra and twice with the Conservatory Symphony Orchestra, and has received grants from the McAbbie and Hnatyshyn foundations. A versatile artist, Victor also plays viola, is a very active chamber musician, and often performs new works by his colleagues.
Cellist Andrew Hayhurst is currently pursuing a Master of Music degree at the Yale School of Music, studying with Aldo Parisot. He received bachelor’s degrees in performing arts technology and cello performance at the University of Michigan, where he was a student of Richard Aaron. He attended the University of Michigan on a full merit scholarship and graduated with highest honors. While at Michigan, he won the Santa Barbara’s Bland Foundation Scholarship Competition three years in a row. He also formed a piano trio that competed in national competitions, winning the Midwest and State Divisions of the MTNA Chamber Music Competition. Prior to his collegiate studies, Mr. Hayhurst was a scholarship student at the Colburn School. Committed to outreach and community engagement, Mr. Hayhurst has organized and performed in a number of benefit chamber music concerts featuring professional musicians in the Los Angeles area.

Mr. Herd has attended numerous prestigious music festivals including the Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festival, Encore School for Strings, and the New York String Orchestra Seminar, where he was Principal Second Violin. Devoted to educating the next generation of classical musicians, he was a teaching assistant to David Updegraff at the Cleveland Institute of Music from 2008 to 2010.
Canadian-born cellist Christopher Hwang began his musical studies at the age of three. He has received numerous grants, scholarships, and first-place awards at various provincial and national competitions as both a soloist and a chamber musician. He was a member of the University of Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Kitchener-Waterloo Youth Orchestra, and has performed as a soloist with both groups. He also played with the National Youth Orchestra in 2004 and 2006. Christopher Hwang has attended many music festivals such as the Morningside Music Bridge; Banff Chamber, Masterclass and Orchestra residencies; and the Toronto Summer Music Academy and Festival. In addition to performing, he is an active teacher at the Yamaha School of Music in Canada. Having obtained his bachelor’s degree in music performance at the University of Toronto, he is currently pursuing his Master of Music degree at the Yale School of Music under the tutelage Violinist Geoffrey Herd is currently an Artist of Aldo Parisot. Shawn Moore is an American violinist and graduate of the Bard College Conservatory, where he also received a degree in Asian languages and literature, focusing on modern Chinese fiction. His principal violin teacher at Bard was Ida Kavafian. Born in Elgin, IL, he previously studied with Cyrus Forough. At the Yale School of Music he studies with Ani Kavafian. Shawn has been an active performer throughout his undergraduate career. He was a guest soloist for the Bard Music Festival, performing a rarely-heard work by Charles Villiers Stanford with the American Symphony Orchestra, and has also soloed with the Kishwaukee and Knox-Galesburg orchestras. He performed the Beethoven concerto and the Bruch G minor concerto with the Woodstock Chamber Orchestra, and last semester performed Astor Piazzolla’s Seasons with a student ensemble directed by composer Joan Tower. He has also been a guest artist for the Bard Music Festival of the Hamptons.
Belarusian-born clarinetist Gleb Kanasevich has appeared as a soloist with the Belarus National Philharmonic, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Peabody Symphony Orchestra, Peabody Chamber Orchestra, the Peabody Camerata, and the Lunar Ensemble, among others. Described as a “prodigy” and an “elegant and natural performer” by the press, the 21-year-old has already collected an impressive list of prizes, including winning the Baltimore Symphony Young Soloists Competition, the Frederick Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition, and Peabody’s prestigious Yale Gordon Concerto Competition. He has appeared in the Baltimore/Washington area’s most prestigious concert series, including the Shriver Hall Concert Series, Washington Performing Arts Society, Music in the Great Hall, and Evolution Contemporary Music Series. Edson Scheid earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in 2009 from the Mozarteum University (Salzburg, Austria), where he studied with Igor Ozim, and his Master of Music degree from the Yale School of Music in 2011. He is currently pursuing his Artist Diploma at Yale, studying with Hyo Kang. Edson was born in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, where he became the first Brazilian violinist ever to record Paganini’s 24 Caprices for solo violin. He has given concerts in Austria, Germany, Italy, Slovenia, the U.S., and South Korea. Recent performances include Holly Piccoli is a student in the Certificate in concerts at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, Performance program at the Yale School of Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall, and at the Seoul Music, studying with Professor Syoko Aki.
