artist profiles

American guitarist Trevor Babb has performed and competed throughout the U.S. In 2011, he won Second Prize in the Denver Classical Guitar Society Debut Competition. He has played in masterclasses for some of the world’s best guitarists, including Paul O’Dette, Jakob Lindberg, Raphaella Smitts, and Scott Tennant. Trevor has performed both as a soloist and chamber musician with the Yale Recital Chorus and Orchestra, Ossia New Music, the Apeiron Ensemble, and on Rochester’s public radio station, WXXI. In 2010, he performed on the Yale in New York concert series at Carnegie Hall. Trevor actively composes and performs his own music and has given the premieres of pieces by Justin Hoke and Eugene Astapov. Trevor holds a BM in performance from the Eastman School of Music and is currently studying at the Yale School of Music in pursuit of an MM degree. His principal teachers have been Nicholas Goluses and Benjamin Verdery.

Graham Banfield is a second-year student in guitar at the Yale School of Music, where he studies with Benjamin Verdery.

with honors from the music high school in her hometown, Suzana pursued her studies in France with Denis Pascal, Pierre Pontier, and Florent Boffard in Paris and at the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique Lyon. She has worked with distinguished musicians such as Andras Schiff, Menahem Pressler, Tamas Vasary, Claudio Martinez-Mehner, and Aldo Ciccolini.

Suzana is currently studying with Peter Frankl at the Yale School of Music.

Colin Brookes is a first-year student in viola at the Yale School of Music, where he studies with Ettore Causa.

Victor Fournelle-Blain is starting his master’s degree at Yale School of Music in Ani Kavafian’s studio, after having completed his Artist Diploma in Johanne Arel’s studio at the Montreal Conservatory, where he received Great Distinction for violin and chamber music. In the 2011 Prix d’ Europe competition in Montreal, Victor won the John Newmark Prize as well as first prize in the strings category. The second prize winner of the 2010 OSM Standard Life Competition and the 2010 Trois-Rivières Symphony Competition, he has also won several first prizes at the Canadian Music Competition and in regional competitions. He has played with the TroisRivières Symphony Orchestra and twice with the Conservatory Symphony Orchestra, and received grants from the McAbbie and Hnatyshyn foundations. A versatile artist, Victor also plays viola, is an active chamber musician, and often performs new works by his colleagues.

Born in Timisoara, Romania, Suzana Bartal started playing the piano at the age of eight and made her debut with orchestra at the age of 13.

Her recital appearances led her through Romania, Hungary, France, Italy, Holland, and Germany.

A prizewinner in numerous competitions since the age of 11, Suzana was also awarded scholarships by the Yamaha Music Foundation of Europe, the Nadia et Lili Boulanger Foundation in Paris, the Mecenat musical Societe Generale, and the ADAMI. In 2009 she was a participant in the prestigious Long-Thibaud competition in Andrew Hayhurst graduated in 2011 from the Paris. Her appearances have been broadcast in University of Michigan, where he studied with Romania, Hungary, and France. After graduating Richard Aaron. Graduating with highest honors,

Nova Scotia and has also performed with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and several freelance orchestras in the New England area. As a chamber musician, Andrew regularly performs with both woodwind and brass ensembles.

Andrew has participated in many prestigious summer music festivals, including the Tanglewood Music Center and the Pacific Music Festival Geoffrey Herd is a second-year student in violin in Sapporo, Japan. This year, Andrew will graat the Yale School of Music, where he studies duate from the Yale School of Music with his master’s degree. His teachers include William with Ani Kavafian.

Purvis, James Sommerville, and Harcus Hennigar. he received degrees in cello performance and music technology. His most recent musical endeavors include organizing and playing in a benefit concert with members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and participating in the SchleswigHolstein Festival Academy Orchestra.

Born in Beijing, China in 1986, Wai Lau began playing piano at age seven and started the clarinet at age 13. She soon won numerous competitions, including First Prize in the Hong Kong region in the Second Asian Youth Music Competition.

In 2008, Wai earned her Bachelor of Music degree in clarinet performance with distinction from Indiana University under the tutelage of James Campbell. She was also awarded the prestigious Performer’s Certificate. She received her Master of Music degree in 2010 from McGill University, where she studied with Robert Crowley and Alain Desgagné on the Schulich Scholarship. Wai has won the Grand Prize in the 2010 Canadian National Music Festivals Competition and the 2011 Harold Wright Merit Award from the Boston Woodwind Society. Wai has appeared in chamber music concerts at the Banff Centre, Festival of the Sound, and Lachine Music Festival. Wai is currently pursuing her Artist Diploma at the Yale School of Music under David Shifrin. She is also a teaching artist with the Yale Music in Schools Initiative.

Dan Moore, baritone, is a native of Lancaster, PA. He attended Temple University in Philadelphia, where he earned his Bachelor of Music degree in voice performance (2007) under renowned baritones Dr. William Stone (currently at the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia) and Eric Owens. While at Temple University he sang with the St. Clement’s Church Choir under organist and choirmaster Peter Richard Conte, and the Cathedral Basilica of SS Peter and Paul under Dr. John Romeri. He also sang as section leader and soloist for the Mendelssohn Club of Philadelphia under Alan Harler. A versatile musician, Mr. Moore’s repetoire ranges from oratorio to masterworks of the 17 th and 18 th centuries, from art song to modern works. Dan is currently pursuing his Master of Music degree at the Yale School of Music under the tutelage of James Taylor.

Shawn Moore is an American violinist and recent graduate of the Bard College Conservatory, where he also took a degree in Asian Languages Canadian hornist Andrew Mee enjoys a career and Literature focusing on modern Chinese rich in both orchestral and chamber music per- fiction. His principal teacher at Bard was Ida formance. As an orchestral musician, Andrew Kavafian. Born in Elgin, IL, he previously stufrequently plays principal horn in Symphony died with Cyrus Forough. Music he now studies with Ani Kavafian. Shawn has been an active performer throughout his undergraduate career. He has been a guest soloist for the Bard Music Festival, performing a rarely-heard work by Charles Villiers Stanford with the American Symphony Orchestra, and has also soloed with the Kishwaukee and KnoxGalesburg orchestras. He has performed the Beethoven concerto and Bruch G minor concerto with the Woodstock Chamber Orchestra, and last semester performed Astor Piazzolla’s Seasons with a student ensemble directed by composer Joan Tower. He has also been a guest artist at the Bard Music Festival of the Hamptons.

Alan Kulka is a second-year student in guitar at the Yale School of Music, where he studies with Benjamin Verdery.

Winner of the Prix d’Europe in 2011, Charles Richard-Hamelin is one of today’s most promising Canadian pianists. Originally from Lanaudière in Québec, Charles began studying piano at age five and quickly distinguished himself in various regional, provincial and national competitions. Recently, he won first prize in the 2011 TSO National Piano Competition and second prize in the 2010 Stepping Stone Competition.

Charles has studied piano with Paul Surdulescu, Richard Raymond, and Sara Laimon, and is now pursuing a master’s degree with Boris Berman at the Yale School of Music. Charles has also worked in master classes with pianists such as Julian Martin, Robert McDonald, Peter Frankl, Robert Silverman, and Marc Durand. As a soloist, Charles has performed with the chamber orchestra I Musici and the McGill Symphony Orchestra, and he will perform Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with the the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in 2012.

Flutist Kyeong Hoon Seung has studied at the Paris Conservatory and Lyon Conservatory, and now studies at the Yale School of Music. He has won first prize in the Ihwa Kyunghyang Competition (Korea) and the Bellan International Competition. Kyeong Hoon has studied with Vincent Lucas, Phillippe Pierlot, Julein Beaudiment, Gilles Cottin, and Phillippe Bernold. He currently studies with Ransom Wilson at the Yale School of Music.

Haeyoon Shin is currently pursuing her Artist Diploma at the YSM under the tutelage of Aldo Parisot. She started studying the piano at age two, adding the cello at age nine. Soon after beginning her cello studies, she formed her first chamber group-a string trio with her siblings.

She won the high school Regional Solo and Ensemble Competition five years later, followed by a series of first prizes at the Renton Young Artists Competition, the Marjorie Easley National Strings Competition, and the Individualis International Competition. She earned her Performer’s Diploma at Indiana University (Bloomington), where she also received the Eva Heinitz Scholarship under the tutelage of Janos Starker, and earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington. She received her Master’s degree from the Hartt School of Music. Haeyoon Shin is sponsored by the Carlsen Cello Foundation.

Tenor Steven Soph is a second-year student in voice at the Yale School of Music, where he studies with James Taylor.

Originally from the Boston area, Meryl Summers is a second-year Master of Music student at the Yale School of Music, studying

with Frank Morelli. She received a Fulbright Grant to study in Germany with Gustavo Nunez, the principle bassoonist of the Royal Concertgebouw Or-chestra. In 2008 she received a B.A. in political science and a B.M. from Northwestern University. As part of her studies, she spent a year studying music in Vienna as well as two summers working at Wrangell St. Elias National Park in Alaska.

In 2008–2009, she performed as a regular member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. She has performed with various summer festivals, including the Tanglewood Music Center, and is currently a member of the Youth Orchestra of the Americas. Her former teachers include Christopher Millard, Lewis Kirk, David Seidel and William Buchman.

Originally from Henderson, Kentucky, oboist Kaitlin Taylor is currently a master’s degree candidate at the Yale School of Music, where she studies with Stephen Taylor. Ms. Taylor recently received her Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music. While in Cincinnati, she studied with Mark Ostoich and Dwight Parry, taught private lessons, and in 2008, began substituting with the Evansville Philharmonic and Louisville Orchestras. Over the years, Ms. Taylor has participated in summer programs, festivals, and master classes including the Chautauqua Institution, Texas Music Festival, the Elaine Douvas Master Conference at Interlochen, and most recently, University of Cincinnati’s Spoleto Festival in Spoleto, Italy.

Baritone John Taylor Ward, from Boone, NC, has performed in opera, oratorio, musical theatre, and recital since the age of five. Singing music from the traditional and ancient repertoire to

the present day, he has appeared as Jesus in Bach’s St. Matthew Passion (with Masaaki Suzuki, Yale Schola Cantorum, and Juilliard 415), Ercole in Ercole Amante (Paul O’Dette, Eastman Collegium Musicum), Il Re in Ariodante (American Bach Soloists Academy), the Emcee in Cabaret, and Arkel in Pelléas et Mélisande (both with Eastman Opera Theatre). After attending the North Carolina Governor’s School and UNCArts, he received a bachelor’s degree in 2010 from the Eastman School of Music, where he won the Vocal Concerto Competition, and is in his second year of study with James Taylor at the Yale School of Music and Institute of Sacred Music. Pursuing his love of community engagement, in 2009 Taylor co-founded the Lakes Area Music Festival (www.lakesareamusic.org), where he serves as assistant director.
