Yalari respects our Elders, past and present, and acknowledges that the Yalari office is on Kombumerri country within the lands of the Yugambeh language group.

Winter time at Yalari means many things to me: Outback camps full of dust, lot of kilometres travelled, camp food, laughter, walks and the cultural heart of Australia – Uluru; crisscrossing Australia as we interview the students and families for next year’s scholarships; and the Yalari ‘dinner season’ which this year, will include Perth.

Some extra exciting happenings in and around Yalari of late. My Toowoomba Grammar School mate Brad Horn, got to the top of Mount Everest and on the way, raised funds for Yalari. Thank you Brad for the many years of support and congratulations on a remarkable achievement; Celia Moriarty held her exhibition, ‘Keys to our Country’ at Deloitte in Melbourne during NAIDOC week also raising funds for Yalari.

appointed three new board members: John Campbell, Eddie Watkin and Cameron Prout. Welcome and thank you for your support and commitment to Yalari’s future.

Our champion children are still our focus. I hope their mid-year break back home was restful and fun and they managed to recharge for the last half of the year as it races by as fast as the first part.

As I’ve just returned from driving over 4,000 kilometres into the heart of Australia, I’m humbled by the majesty of the country, feel honoured to be passing through the lands of other Indigenous people and their ancestors, draw strength from the solitude and peace, and feel grateful for the life I’m blessed to lead.

Mulhuma Wangga Mirlimirli “Winter Story Book” Yindjibarndi is one of the languages spoken at Roebourne, in north-western Western Australia. Its speakers originally came from the tableland area of the Pilbara, around the Fortescue River near Mount Pyrton, north to the Upper Yule River and east to Mungaroona Range. This includes what is now the MillstreamChinchester National Park, an area that contains many significant sites for Yindjibarndi people. Several hundred people still speak Yindjibarndi.

Kim is our Pathways Coordinator and will be working with Pathways Manager Steve Harris to help support Yalari students and graduates as they transition to higher education, vocational training and employment. This includes career guidance in Year 11 and 12, support accessing tertiary scholarships and post-school opportunities, and work experience and mentoring.

Congratulations to Heather Douglas and Richard Kelly who were married in late April.

Heather has become a close friend over the years through her role at Herbert Smith Freehills and has also volunteered at Yalari events.

Suzie, a long time supporter and friend of Yalari, is working on special projects in the finance and business administration areas. Welcome to you both!

Yalari scholars continue to work hard, dream big... and achieve!

WELL DONE MONIQUE! Congratulations to Yalari scholar and Year 11 Kambala student Monique Laurie who has been voted Head Boarder 2018/2019.

Monique was inducted during an inauguration assembly on July 31.

As head boarder she is on the student executive - the four top prefects in the school who make decisions and meet regularly with the principal.

Following the assembly there was an afternoon tea where each of the new prefects said some words of appreciation to the outgoing ones.

Norah Hegedus, Year 10 student at St Hilda’s, completed her surf life saving bronze medallion.

She also won the Rainbow Bay Youth Excellence Award for outstanding participation and contribution to junior life saving.

Year 9 student, Anna Dingley has been chosen to represent The Glennie School in the Touch Football team to tour New Zealand in 2019 with the School’s Sports Tour.

Year 7 St Hilda’s student, Sasha Currie placed first in high jump at school and districts athletics, and will be attending regionals in the coming weeks.

Year 11 St Ignatius’ College Riverview student, Ezekiel Billy recently participated in an immersion program through his school. He was part of a small group of students and staff who travelled to Borroloola in the Northern Territory and spent two weeks learning about the local culture.

The trip took place during NAIDOC Week and the boys were invited to participate in the celebrations and learn traditional dances.

Year 9 Churchie student, Connor McGovern-Cubby received an academic recognition award for his GPA improvement.

Kevin Howard, Year 8 student at St Ignatius’ College Riverview, has been awarded a ‘Red Tie’, an honour given to students as recognition of special merit.

Year 11 St Ignatius’ College Riverview student, Shuaib Rhodes-Swain has been appointed as a proctor for 2018-19.

Proctors are boarding prefects who are leaders in the boarding community and role models to other students.

Year 10 Kinross Wolaroi School student Jade Jolliffe was the recipient of the Herbert Smith Freehills Resilience Award at Yalari’s annual Sydney Dinner. Pictured with her Yalari Student Support Officer, Jessica Smith.

Sarah-Cait Kirkland, Year 12 student at John Paul College, has achieved a Pro Diligentia Award.

This award acknowledges students who have shown persistent application to learning and improvement, have been pro-active in maintaining a respectful learning environment and have always completed their coursework to the very best of their ability.

Sarah has been commended by her teachers for outstanding commitment to academic success through her excellent demonstration of persistence, active involvement, reflection of learning, time management and striving for accuracy.

2019 SCHOLARS GET READY! Yalari’s 2019 scholarship applications closed on 30 April and we were delighted to receive a large number of applications from all over Australia.

We are currently in the review and interview process and look forward to meeting our prospective new scholars.

Year 12 Great Southern Grammar (GSG) student Zainel Bin Busu took part in a GSG Cricket Tour to Dubai in the first week of the school holidays.

2018 represents Yalari’s 13th year of providing educational scholarships for Indigenous children from regional, rural and remote areas of Australia. Together we have empowered students with the opportunity to learn, dream and achieve through full boarding school scholarships.

He and his parents set up a ‘Go Fund Me’ site enabling him to raise the money to join the team of 12. In Dubai, they played four other schools, including one from the UK, and won them all!

This journey continues because of the inspirational and committed partners, donors, sponsors, supporters and volunteers who make up the Yalari family.

Zainel returned with such a positive response, having enjoyed the many and varied experiences.

The 2018 Yalari Perth Dinner will be held on Friday, 26 October 2018. This inaugural event will be a unique celebration of Yalari’s Indigenous students in Western Australia and an opportunity to showcase the important work Yalari does. Held at the delightful University Club of Western Australia, you will hear the personal journeys of our Yalari students and alumni while enjoying quality food, entertainment and good company. You will hear about the many positive outcomes created by the commitment and generosity of each member of the Yalari family. We also look forward to introducing the Yalari story to our new guests.

Our generous volunteer Perth Dinner Committee has created a great evening and our hope is you will join us with your family, friends and colleagues.

NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life.

The week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

A fundraising raffle was also run with the proceeds being donated to Yalari. It was a fantastic event and a great celebration of Indigenous culture!

ART EXHIBITION

KEYS TO OUR COUNTRY

As part of NAIDOC week celebrations, our friends at Deloitte Australia in Melbourne hosted the ‘Keys To Our Country’ art exhibition.

The exhibition was a portrait collection of Indigenous Australians who bring their culture into their artwork and artist, Celia Moriarty, kindly donated profits from artwork sales to Yalari.

Our very own Waverley Stanley was one of the subjects of Celia’s thought provoking artwork.

The purpose of the project is to create positive conversations about Aboriginal culture today. The portraits celebrate Indigenous Australians who are teaching us how to build a stronger future together.

ABBOTSLEIGH SCHOOL ASSEMBLY Abbotsleigh held a special assembly to celebrate NAIDOC Week so they did not miss the event due to school holidays.

Presented by Year 12 Yalari scholars Kiara Davies and Alana Sharpley, they were joined by Mr Chris Tobin, a Darug man who works as a cultural presenter, public speaker and artist, and special guest speaker Mahlia Peachey, Yalari graduate of 2015, who spoke on the NAIDOC 2018 theme ‘Because of her, we can!’

The singing and dancing from the youngest learners in Abbotsleigh’s Early Learning Centre were sensational and the assembly closed with a dance by all the current Yalari scholars.

Year 10 Yalari students, Georgia Dennison and Holly Austen coordinated fun activities including face painting, rock painting and the ever popular barbecue. Students and staff immersed themselves in the day by dressing in red, black and yellow mufti for a gold coin donation, and all funds raised went towards ‘Pay it Forward’, a Yalari fundraising initiative encouraging students to think creatively and work together, in order to collectively fund a scholarship for another Yalari scholar.

YALARI STUDENT SUPPORT 2018 OUTBACK CAMPS From ‘yarning’ around the campfire at night to experiencing the magnetism of Uluru, Yalari’s Year 9 (and some Year 10) students returned from the Yalari Outback Camps feeling connected, inspired and humbled.

Held during the July school holidays, the six-night camping adventure from Alice Springs to Uluru offered students the opportunity to reconnect with culture and the land, forge new friendships, strengthen their support networks and reflect on the unique opportunities they are receiving.

Yalari camps and activities offer students the chance to catch-up with each other, seek support or advice and undertake personal growth and development.

They are an integral and important part of the Yalari student support program.

YEAR 12 PATHWAYS WORKSHOPS In late March Yalari partners, Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF) conducted workshops in their corporate offices in Sydney and Brisbane for Yalari’s Year 12 students. The HSF staff, all of which have a legal background, volunteered their time to offer guidance and advice to the Yalari scholars.

The workshops, which are designed to assist students with identifying, assessing and developing their post-school plans, encourage students to consider a range of career and study options. They are able to experience a corporate working environment and simulated interview, and are coached in everything from resume writing and interviews to preparing for employment and financial responsibility.

The post-workshop survey revealed that students felt more comfortable and confident about their plans moving forward after having attended.

Thank you to the HSF team who so willingly volunteered their time and expertise to help our students in their transition.

NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK Yalari is proud to be part of National Volunteering Week (21–27 May 2018), an annual celebration to acknowledge the generous contribution of our nation’s volunteers. Yalari volunteers form part of a staggering six million volunteers nationwide, all making an impact in their communities and on society, through generously giving their time.

We are truly powered by our 231 active volunteers. Did you know that in 2017 they donated a mind-blowing 7,000 hours to Yalari? How lucky we are to have such wonderful people on-board.

As part of National Volunteer Week and to recognise the considerable impact of our volunteers, we are delighted to announce the Yalari National Volunteer State Award winners. These amazing people were voted for via a nomination process.

Lucy is part of the Melbourne Dinner Committee and the Melbourne taskforce. She spreads the word of Yalari to Indigenous people in country towns and to the development and construction industry.

Lucy also helps out with the St Catherine’s School, Melbourne Yalari girls.

Neil coordinates the Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF) tutoring program at St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School, is a member of the Brisbane Dinner Committee and recruits HSF volunteers for Yalari’s Brisbane Fundraising Dinner. He has been volunteering for Yalari since 2016.

Taneale is the President of the Yalari Alumni Association. She has worked with the volunteer Alumni committee and other Yalari Alumni to further develop the Association. Taneale has been volunteering for 2 years.

Gillian has spread the word about Yalari for many years in WA, helping with information sessions, supporting the Yalari scholars, meeting students for airport transfers and volunteering at Orientation Camp.

Denise Slocombe

Following Jordy’s employment as a Yalari Student Support Officer in Adelaide, she returned as a volunteer to tutor the boys at St Peter’s College, Adelaide.

For the past three years, she has been ensuring they feel supported both academically and emotionally.

Denise has contributed to Yalari by volunteering in two roles; volunteering on the Sydney Dinner Committee and participating in the Yalari Regional Advisory Council.

She has been a wonderful advocate for Yalari for many years.

HOOF & HOOK SUCCESS!

A special thank you to our dear friends Melissa Fletcher, Terry Mitchell and their team at Fletcher International Exports for organising a fantastic fundraiser in the ‘Hoof & Hook’ competition and auction at the Dubbo Show in May. Despite freezing weather, they raised an incredible $7,400.

The wonderful students from Alison Greene House at Moreton Bay College raised $1909.10 for Yalari when they hosted a picnic party. They baked and sold soft drinks and ran the ever-popular ‘Lob a Chocolate’ and donut eating challenge. Thank you girls!

DELOITTE Storytelling & Illustration Workshop During the school holidays, Deloitte’s Sydney office facilitated a storytelling and illustration workshop for children of Deloitte employees.

Yalari alumna, Hannah Ranby volunteered to speak to the children about Yalari and what it means to be Indigenous.

As part of the activities they also hosted a ‘book and bake’ sale with proceeds being donated to Yalari.

Thank you to our long-term supporters, Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF), for the generous donation from their recent 2018 APAC Corporate Conference on the Gold Coast. The HSF Corporate team took part in a team building activity where Yalari was selected as the recipient.

The proceeds raised at the event has allowed Yalari to install a new digital phone system at head office, equipment urgently needed for transitioning to the NBN.

CDPP employees continue fundraising initiative On July 24, the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions (CDPP) employees held their second National Pledge Day. This time, staff were invited to Pay it Forward by accompanying their donation with a message of inspiration or support for Yalari students.

The response to the concept was very positive, raising $767 on the day and more than 70 staff contributed a handwritten, heartfelt message for the students.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to this thoughtful initiative and those who wrote personal notes.
