Yalari scholars continue to work hard, dream big... and achieve! Caleb Laifoo, Year 9 at The Southport School, was selected in the Qld Reds Maroon team to compete in the Junior Gold Cup Northern Conference in Brisbane.
Year 7 St Hilda’s School student, Caidence Purcell received the Most Improved Player Award for the 2019 netball season.
Year 11 The Southport School student Kiira Bligh has been elected as Delpratt House ViceCaptain for 2020.
Year 11 Kinross Wolaroi student, Jade Joliffe completed a critical thinking course which enables her to gain early entry into Macquarie University in 2021.
Keenan Kennedy, Year 9 student at Scotch College Adelaide, won his under 14s grand final club game for Colonel Light Gardens and was awarded ‘Best On-ground’. He was cheered on by his fellow Yalari scholars.
Leilani Fuller, Year 7 student at Methodist Ladies’ College Perth, received the most valuable player award at her netball grand final. Her mum was there to cheer her on!
First in QCE-OP! Year 12 Anglican Church Grammar School (Churchie) student Lachlan Toovey, received the First in QCE-OP which is awarded to the highest achieving student in the OP Class of 2019. He also received the Senior School Academic Award and the Senior School All Round Excellence Award. Congratulations on an outstanding achievement, Lach! Year 12 St Hilda’s School student, Darcie Sexton received the Non Nobis Solum Award. This award is reserved for students who have demonstrated commitment to the school motto, “not for ourselves alone”.

Yalari is looking for students and families who believe that education is the key to providing a better future for Indigenous people in Australia. Boarding school scholarship applications are open to Indigenous children who live in regional, rural or remote areas of Australia and who will be starting Year 7 in 2021. Anglican Church Grammar School (Churchie) students Moigida Loban (left), Matao Bonney (middle) and Connor McGovern-Cubby were recognised for their art works. Moigida was awarded best overall art student for Years 7-9, Matao received the Year 10 Excellence in Art award and Connor was awarded the Year 10 emerging artist award. Our scholarships are awarded to students who are willing to give 100%, try hard at everything they do, don’t give up when things get hard and are brave and determined enough to succeed at boarding school. We work closely with our students, families and partner schools to provide a high level of support in all aspects of student welfare. Tenika Roe, Year 12 student at Scotch College Adelaide, has been awarded the Vocational Education Prize and the highly coveted Oughton Family Prize. The Oughton Family Prize is awarded to a student who has demonstrated a desire and willingness to work on improving their success in: •

showing growth and personal improvement in their intra and interpersonal skills.

Experience Day Careers of the future will take expertise and passion in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths – STEM. In order to create exposure to these types of careers and new ways of thinking for our students, Yalari and professional services company Turner & Townsend (T&T), developed a STEM Experience Day for Yalari scholarship students in years 7 – 9 from our Sydney based partner schools. Participants were given an insight to a variety of STEM based careers through a series of interactive activities in addition to presentations from experts in the field. In collaboration with NSW Transport, 12 students spent the day at the Sydney Metro training facilities. After Acknowledgement of Country, they were introduced to T&T HR Director — Dave Rokesky, Managing Director — Anooj Oodit, as well as Yalari alumnus, Jaxon Petterson who is currently an Infrastructure Cadet at T&T while studying a Bachelor of Construction Project Management at the University of Technology Sydney.
Information Modelling, and the opportunity to virtually drive a train using the Sydney Metro Train Driving Simulator, which is also used to prepare train driving employees. The day was a great success with students sharing excitement in new career possibilities for the future. A special thank you to Turner and Townsend and Sydney Metro for their support.
Throughout the day, students were given the opportunity to complete STEM challenges and engage in experiential learning. Students most enjoyed the Virtual Reality and Building
Yalari supporter Jemima Myer, recently took part in the Melbourne Marathon Festival while selecting Yalari as her fundraising charity. Jemima not only made it to the finishing line but in doing so, raised an amazing $2,640 for Indigenous education. A huge shout-out to Jemima and her incredible band of friends and supporters who helped her reach her fundraising target. Thank you all for contributing to the education and empowerment of Indigenous children around Australia!

Encouraging positive mental health for Indigenous youth Hey Everyone, my name is Kaleishia Ross. I am from Katherine in the Northern Territory. In 2010, I was awarded the Yalari Rosemary Bishop Indigenous Education Scholarship and graduated from Scotch College, Adelaide in 2014. I currently work at headspace in Katherine and I am the Aboriginal Wellbeing Worker. Headspace is the National Youth Mental Health Foundation that provides early intervention to young people between 12 and 25 years. The service covers four core areas: mental health, physical health, work and study support and alcohol and other drugs. My role is to provide responsive, culturally appropriate and safe support to young Aboriginal people experiencing difficulties in accessing mental health care. This includes the consideration of mental health and social difficulties, intergenerational trauma, alcohol and drug issues and engagement in education or employment, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. I am required to assist with referrals and engagement with private providers at headspace Katherine. I love that I have been given this opportunity to further my skills and to expand my understanding and knowledge on mental health. With the stigma of mental health issues we as Aboriginal people face, I encourage my people to receive the support they need. I maintain a healthy headspace by being active and playing a range of sports, keeping connected to my family, friends and culture. I also take the time to balance work, sleep and being a mum. Well Done Calvin! Yalari alumnus and St Peter’s College, Adelaide graduate (2018) Calvin Hunter recently began his new role as Club Leader at World Vision Australia in his home town of Derby WA. Calvin engages in activities with youth aged 12-18 to help them better their community.
Congratulations Jondy! Yalari alumna and current Bond University student, Jondayah Martin (Class of 2017, St Margaret’s College Brisbane), has been selected as a representative at the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) International Model United Nations. The three day conference aims to provide students and educators with the most realistic simulation of the United Nations by utilising proper and accurate UN Rules of Procedures. The opportunity will see her travel to New York and Washington in February 2020.

Supporting Indigenous youth through corporate internship opportunities
Our Pathways
The Yalari Pathways Program provides a formal structure to support Yalari students and alumni in their transition to higher education, vocational training and employment. Any student who has partially or fully completed their scholarship becomes a member of the Yalari alumni. The Yalari Pathways Program supports alumni through further development and employment opportunities in addition to personal, career and leadership development, including an Internship Program and Gap Year Program. An internship aims to support a student’s transition from study to work, providing insight and experience into the professional world.
In September, Yalari welcomed its first participant to the Yalari Pathways Internship Program. Yalari alumna and John Paul College graduate (2018), Sarah-Cait Kirkland commenced her internship at the Yalari office on the Gold Coast. The course curriculum enables her to gain valuable on-thejob experience across all areas of the organisation. “Being an intern at Yalari is providing me with an array of new experiences,” Sarah explains.
“I’m excited to work with Yalari and gain more experience. I can pay it forward by being a small part of the organisation that continues to enrich more and more Indigenous students around Australia each year,” Lyric says. The Yalari staff also enjoy having the alumni in the office — learning about their experiences, listening to their stories and getting to know them individually. “I cannot wait to see where life takes me from here but I remain extremely grateful for this opportunity and will volunteer my time when I can. Thank you Yalari team!” Sarah-Cait says.
“Seeing Yalari operate from the perspective of a staff member rather than a student has given me a large amount of insight into the operations of a business. I’ve learnt new skills that will enable me to further develop my employability for future jobs.” Although interested in owning her own business in the future, Sarah-Cait is returning to study at Griffith University in 2020, undertaking a Bachelor in Education majoring in Physical Education and Commerce. November saw Yalari welcome its second intern to the program. Alumna and Canberra Girls’ Grammar school graduate (2016), Lyric Hearn is also taking advantage of the internship opportunity. Lyric is currently studying a Cert IV in Child, Youth and Family Intervention through TAFE Queensland with the aim of becoming a social worker in the future. CLASS OF 2019 Yalari graduates celebrate in style! The annual Yalari Graduation Ceremony is a celebration of success, resilience, mateship and community, and we were proud to welcome another 19 Yalari graduates into our ever expanding alumni community. For the first time, the ceremony was held at Parliament House in Canberra where students were joined by sponsors, family members and Yalari staff. Yalari alumna and 2013 Geelong Grammar School graduate, Salasei McCarthy directed proceedings as Master of Ceremonies and was delighted to be involved in awarding the 2019 Yalari Valedictorian to Kambala student, Monique Laurie. Monique was awarded the top honour due to her extraordinary leadership and mentoring qualities, her commitment to Yalari and Kambala communities and her overall exemplary attitude. “Thank you Waverley and Llew for giving me this opportunity to stand before you all as Yalari Valedictorian for 2019. It gives me great pride to have been chosen out of my amazing cohort and it is a real honour to be speaking to you all today,” Monique said.

“There are no words to express our gratitude for all that Yalari has done and continues to do. We can only hope to make you proud with continuing to make a difference in this world.” The formal ceremony was followed by an intimate lunch where students were able to reflect on their six-year boarding school journey with their fellow Yalari scholars and sponsors. The graduates then boarded buses and headed for the snowfields. Delightful weather was enjoyed over the weekend as students took part snowboarding, skiing and tobogganing. For many, it was the first time they had seen snow. Although this was the last official Yalari event for the students, it is certainly not the end of the road for friendships and connections made between the group. It’s not the end of their journey with Yalari either. The Pathways team have been busy working with our Year 12s to help them with the transition from being a Yalari scholar to life after school.

a shared by Charlie Scudamore, Geelong Grammar School - Vice Principal The education of Yalari students in Independent boarding schools throughout the nation is not just focussing on the Indigenous students within a school. I have said on many occasions that Yalari students and the highlighting of Indigenous matters educates the entire school community. Let me give you just one example of this. During Term 4, I received this wonderful e-mail from a member of staff: ‘I thought I would share with you an incredible story about the power and impact of having Indigenous Scholars attend GGS. Sarah* graduated in 2018 and had some challenging, yet humbling experiences with our indigenous students. Sarah knows too well about some of her comments and opinions about Aboriginal people. Anyway, the mother of the student almost ran me down yesterday to tell me that Sarah has been working in the Kimberley town of Kununurra. She loves it, has made some of the best friends she has ever had, and is now considering changing her Uni
preferences to WA. I have no idea what prompted her to do this; but I do know when she started at the Corio Campus in Year 10 after a year at Timbertop, she changed her opinions and clearly now her behaviours.’ Geelong Grammar School’s Indigenous Programme is for the benefit of all. The Programme is not only focussed on students with an Indigenous heritage. It is aimed to heighten the awareness and broaden the knowledge associated with Indigenous culture, tradition, customs and history of every person connected to our community. We are delighted our four Year 12 Yalari students, Zanna Palmer, Klaudia Farnham, Eli Gillon and Declan Harry, as well as Brodie Murray, a non-Yalari scholar, have graduated. We continue to work closely with Yalari in an open, transparent and collaborative relationship that has provided students with a supportive environment, one in which we encourage each child to develop aspirational goals, to imagine

a positive future and, above all else, give each a genuine sense of hope. However, we are equally delighted when we receive e-mails such as the one aforementioned. Geelong Grammar School celebrates diversity. We ask all to accept and embrace the differences that enrich this community. We are all part of a shared humanity. This humanity has been reflected in so many ways throughout the year through the good work of so many people. We have celebrated and learned together. Reconciliation means a coming together of people when harm has been caused, through honesty, understanding and compassion. Australia is still searching for a way to truly support reconciliation with its Indigenous peoples, which is why the story of one child being transformed through our programme was shared by many. Over the past three months, Yalari has hosted fundraising dinners in Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane. These were in addition to our Sydney Dinner which was held earlier in the year. Our fundraising dinners offer us an important opportunity to gather together and celebrate the many milestones and successes achieved by our students.
