01 AquaMate SEP. 2013 - MAY. 2014 Wen Yu, Yang Yun Tze, Hsieh Ya Fan, Ku The earth is the biggest treasure to us. But nowadays, we’re facing a problem of lacking resources. What can we do? AquaMate is a project about being eco-friendly. We hope to help the environment with everyone’s effort. And AquaMate provides an easier way for families to do good to Mother Nature.

Recycling / Urban Mining ? At first, we discussed issues about recycling. From a person’s behavior to a fmily, then, a whole society. We went to recycling station for observations and interview. Later, we broadened the range of recycling. We were interested in Urban Mining. It refers to a larger scope of recycling. It not only deals with papers, bottles but all kinds of things that can be recycled.

At biginning, we’re Inspired by the oil spill incident in Mexico. We searched kinds of animals’ hair and tested how much oil it can suck up. Through experiments, we found out that feathers of chickens are the most outstanding ones. It’s because there’s no oil on chicken’s feathers and the composition of the feathers makes them take in more amount of oil.
Because chicken’s feathers have no oil, they can easily take much oil. While it’s the same reason that makes chicken’s feathers no economic value. They can’t keep things warm. We thought that by using them to deal with the grease problem, we can promote the value of the feathers. However, it costs tremendous amount of water to clean the feathers. It’s still not a eco-friendly approach.

AquaMate Introduction AquaMate is a grease trap designed for household users. There are six components in AquaMate. A lid, sieve, oil cup, tank and the main body. Special design of the oil cup lets users can take grease out without trouble. With AquaMate, every families can simply do their parts to the nature while enjoying meals at home.

Working Principle There’re two tanks in AquaMate and the two tanks are connected via the passage. Because grease’s rather low density, it will float on water. With this property, water
goes to the 2nd tank and drains away whereas grease is trapped in the 1st tank, on the top where the oil cup is.

The oil cup makes users take out grease and empty it skillfully.It also avoids users from squatting down to fish for grease in the narrow place under sink.
A series of mechanisms let users run the whole system while simply rotating the oil cup. It makes sealed plug open then form a gap so water can be discharged.

Push the lid to limit, it will bounce up and open. Take out the sieve respectively and clean it regularly. When the ring shows in the window or the timer is twinkling, clean the oil cup. Rotate the oil cup. Whole tanks of water drain away in the meantime.

Simply take out grease with the oil cup. Pour the grease along the curve of the oil cup into leftover bucket. Thoroughly clean the oil cup as well as the seive. Complete cleaning process by installing the seive and oil cup back after washing.

Before we jumped into the theme of vending machine, we did brandstorming. By simply cut down pages that we were interested in from magzines, it helped us think outside the box. There’re two points which drew our attention. In summer, a man reads ratiocination.

A feeling of “Incomplete“ , “Endless“
Social Issues
This kind feeling of incomplete and endless recalls us a story. Chen Sheng, a singer, hold a concert in 1999, but he decided to sell tickets in 1998. The tickets was sold at a low price with one condition. It demamded couples to come back the concert together after an year. At that time, tickets was sold out immediately whereas only half of couples came back the concert. Then, we started to think about can a transaction last longer?
Homeless, the elderly, Social vulnerable groups, environment issues ... There’re a lot of social issues around the world. How can a vendind machine do to help? With a low using barrier provided by vending machines, almost everyone is able to use vending machines. Can transaction be much easier to those people in need? Or the power of transaction would be stronger to help people?
Orientation Brief After discussions, we kept the idea of endless in mind and put emphasis more on human than general social issues.
Help Lives / “Would you please have a good life in my stead?” said a little girl who had fought against cancer for years. Cancer is one of the top ten reasons of dying. There’re people who want to live longer, yet they can’t afford medical expenses. We hoped to turn a vending machine into an approach of fund raising.
Remind Cherising / Every person, Every day, has something brilliant to be cherished. Inspired by those brave poeple who fought against cancer and stayed positive, we would like to remind everyone to cherish their own lives. And the believe of beautiful life even though sometimes, life can be tough.

Ideas We came up with many different games. Some games had elements to imply that life is fragile, and some put more emphasis on alternatives. All ideas were built according to our brief. Every person, every day has something brilliant to be cherished. And we hoped to impress people by experience it in this vending machine.

No matter how our lives look like, we all have to go through the same stage. We born, and we die. The only different is that some live longer time and some won’t. It’s a symbol of life. There’s an end and it starts at the same position, but what is going to happen on the journey is unknown.

Little Journey Introduction Little Journey is a vending machine which sells spirograph with a life story. And the income from little Journey is donated to cancer foundation. With a low using barrier provided by a vending machine, it gets more chance to raise funds for cancer patients who needs help.
Little Journey Characteristic Little Journey presents a story adapted from a true story. And the story lines will be different according to users’ decisions. By acting as the characters in the story, users go thourgh a little journey of life.
The two characters represent a patient and family of him. As a patient, what do you do for your family? As a family, do you have the right to do what you want to do?

A whole life is like a story. Every person is the master of their own life sotry.
It’s inevitable in life that we have to make decisions, although sometimes it’s difficult for us. Even we can’t figure out what the future will be, we still have to hand our choices in.
No matter what people have chosen and how the outcome was, it’s definitely a beautiful life. Each time, when people make decision, it drops down part of spirograph. The spirograph and the patterns will be differnt dut to different choices. And it represent pretty life.
Little Journey tells a story of a cancer patient. By acting as the character in the story, people can go through diferent stages of life. Let’s share those happiness and sorrow in life together.
In the story, people must choose to let the story make progress.

Little Journey Holographic Projection Combining 2D and 3D, we used kind of holography to present the story. We made a 3D stage and project the charactersin to it to promote layer effect.

03 Audio Guide & Twist Headphone OCT. 2012 - JAN. 2013 When we go to exhibitions, we use audio guide to learn information better. And sometimes, we go by ourselves while sometimes with others. Are we going to take turn? Or to go together? This time, we tried to figure out solutions for product that may be used by more than one person.

According to the obervations, we listed down problems people had. By design method, we picked up some problems and a group of people to see different situations then look for solutions.

We noticed that people concern where their friends are once in a while if they go seperately. But it’s hard to check it if the place is crowded or if people are not just nearby. Also, it’s hard not to happen that people talk loud when wearing a headphone since they can’t hear. As for individual behavior, we found out that people rarely wear headphone all the time when visiting exhibitions. They tend to take a rest whenever there’s no introduction. And the elderly have problems with operating audio guide.
Don’t know where the friends are. Are they still in this area? Are they finish?

Notion One of the first aid process is to disinfect the wound before you bandage it. However, commercial available iodine solutions are hard to aim at the bottle’s mouth. You need to press the bottle to let Iodine solution drip on the cotton bud but it always drip down on the table or floor. I came up with an idea to change to change the the flow of iodine solution. By turnning it into the opposite way, iodine solution comes from the bottom to the top. People can dip it instead of aimming at the small mouth.

Using Process Push the body of Mini Nurse down, iodine solution comes up the the platform. Simply dip the iodine solution with cotton bud and apply to wound.

05 Reveilly FEB 2012 - Apr. 2012 You Rong, Chang Jia Shan, Yu Ya Fan, Ku Reveilly is an alarm which try to wake people up by touching instead of sounds. We’re thinking about a situation like students living in dorm or share room with others. How to wake a person up but not to disturb the other ones. It’s a project that we try to explore possibility of lego robot. By its elements and programming, this’s our first product that has actions.

At the biginning, we played with lego to see what it can be. We built cars with different structures then it had different functions. However, we found out that the motors are quite weak. It couldn’t even lift up a 300 ml bottle with water inside. Also, though it has color sensers, they are not as sensitive as we thought. Thus, when we developed ideas, there’re a few conditions.

We had some ideas about cleaning robot or about smart house robot. But later, we all had interested in an idea about alarm without sounds as we’re all living in student dorm at that time. Most of time, we had very different schedule from roommates. And in the morning, alarms were always annoying.

Reveilly has it’s own track. It moves along the bed and wake people up by touching. When it’s time to wake up, Reveilly starts walking forward until it touchs the bedplate on the other side. Then, it moves backward again. If user catches Reveilly’s hand, it raises the frequency of moving back and forth until user wakes up and turns it off.

Turn on the switch on the back of Reveilly. Set the time you want to wake up at before going to bed. Reveilley keeps waiting by users’ feet until the time users set to wake them up. It starts to move along the bed until crashes the bedplate. After changing direction, Reveilly keeps working until users wake up. Press the botton on the back of Reveilly to turn the alarm off.
06 Spinning Tape Disenser SEP. 2011 - NOV. 2011 Tape dispenser is one kind of products that its form is its function. Usually, it has an axis for a tape and has a body for the axis. Spinning Tape Dispenser changed the way of using tape dispensers. By the new way to put a tape in, it gave a possibility to the form of a tape dispenser.

There could be few different directions for developing ideas of a tape dispenser. We could think about how to build a tape dispenser at lowest cost. Or we could improve it for special users like children or nurse. At the beginning, I didn’t set a direction. I just skeched ideas that I came up with. But later, I was interested in a new way of using a tape dispenser. I wonder is there a new way for changing tapes.

Spinning Tape Dispenser is a tape dispenser without a specific cylinder working as an axis. The function of holding a tape is also part of the form. It’s a new possibility of how a tape dispenser look like. It’s also a new way to change a tape.
