בס”ד
DEAR FRIENDS, In 2018 we celebrated the Start-Up Nation’s 70 years of unprecedented growth and success while also commemorating OU Israel’s contributing role in its dynamic history and prolific development. On an international level, we are continuing to make news as we marked the United State’s historic recognition of Yerushalayim as the capital of Israel and moving its embassy with a high profile gathering of 18 highranking American and Israeli delegates including Chief Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau, the US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman, and Florida Governor Rick Scott. This event was covered in more than 655 news networks around the Globe including Japan and Saudi Arabia. On a more personal level, we continued to see Kibbutz Galuyot, the ingathering of the exiles, unfold before our very eyes. With its respective challenges we helped English-Speaking Olim from the USA, Canada and other English speaking countries thrive and be successful in their new home, the State of Israel. With your support the OU Israel Center carried out 4,160 annual events including shiurim, workshops, and trips with more over 100,000 annual visits. We helped to make a spiritual connection to Israel for more than 6,500 English-Speaking young adults from abroad and new Olim through our JCHAT, the Semichat Chaver Program (SCP), Taglit – OU Israel Free Spirit and JLIC IDC Herzliya programs. This included a twinning between 400 young professionals in six Israeli and five North American communities. Our NCSY Israel program has grown to engage 250 unique teens annually along with Camp Dror and Yachad who respectively reached more than 200 Jewish youth and 100 special needs young adults
strengthening their Jewish identity and integration into society. As part of our work to build up the nation of Israel, we continued to strengthen the State of Israel’s peripheral regions along with their growing numbers of at-risk populations. Over the past 18 years, our specialized programs have targeted more than 30,000 peripheral youth, including many youth at-risk. Our Makom Balev youth movement, Jack E. Gindi Oraita Program, and the Pearl and Harold Jacobs Zula Outreach Center have supported youth during their critical transition into adulthood. Together, we are enabling their participation in venues which will ensure their upward socio-economic mobility with 81% of our graduates in 2018 seeking enrollment in Pre-Army Preparation Programs, Yeshivot, National Service and Army Service in Israel’s Defense Forces. I am proud to count you among our dear network of world-wide friends and supporters. Along with our dedicated OU-Israel staff, we look forward to continue to working together to turn our challenges into something that unites us – a belief in a stronger and more resilient Jewish people and State of Israel. May Hashem continue blessing us all!

NCSY ISRAEL
The teenage years are challenging even under optimal conditions; add the additional trials and tribulations of Aliyah to the mix, and the challenge is even greater. Anglo teens in Israel confront tough questions of identity and acculturation: They have left behind communities and familiar surroundings, and are not yet comfortable in their new environment. They struggle with cultural differences, social limitations, the language barrier, and the desire to contribute to society without a framework in which they can do so. NCSY Israel helps English-Speaking teenage immigrants integrate into Israeli society by providing a framework that allows them to take pride in who they are and where they come from, as they become fully acculturated members of Israeli society. For a growing number of immigrants from English-Speaking communities, NCSY Israel is a crucial stepping stone in the process of absorption, producing socially well adjusted, emotionally healthy, proud Israeli teens. A Message from Rabbi`s Michael Kahn & Yosef Ginsberg, the Program’s Directors: “We have had the privilege to enhance the lives of more than 530 unique Anglo teen Olim through 50 programs. With a growing number of Anglo immigrants, NCSY Israel is crucial for the absorption of emotionally healthy and proud Israeli teens.”

More than Jewish Youth strengthened since the program’s inception
“My son blossomed there. He loved everything about it and grew as a person.” - Rachel, Yerushalayim
YOUTH ARE THE FUTURE This past July I was able to take part in the incredible Camp Dror Leadership program where, among other things, I experienced firsthand what real life in Israel is like and not just another vacation spot. More than 25 teenagers from across the globe became my sisters as we embarked on a two-and-a-half-week leadership journey that took us from the hills of the Golan Heights to the halls of the Israel Knesset – all while packing Torah, chessed (kindness), and love of the State and Land of Israel into each and every day. Through Camp Dror, we learned to love and value our country and homeland in a deeper way while preparing to be the future leaders of Am Yisrael in Israel. Leadership-wise, we benefitted from several workshops giving us the skills and knowledge to become adaptive leaders. For example, through a public-speaking workshop, we learned how to give a speech in front of a group and engage an audience, really boosting our confidence in our newfound skills. A personal finance and financial literacy course further taught us how to manage money in a safe and smart manner.
HIGHLIGHTS IN 2018 LEADERSHIP PROGRAM FOR BOYS This past summer, for the first time, Camp Dror ran a summer Leadership Program for boys. In 2018 Camp Dror’s leadership program targeted a total of 25 teenagers.
u
INCLUSION OF SPECIAL NEEDS YOUTH For the first time this past summer Camp Dror
u
partnered with Yachad to include youth with special needs. Camp Dror’s integration of special needs campers is the only such program for English speaking kids in Israel. The program was highly successful and tremendously impacted everyone. Not only did it provide these kids with a wonderful summer experience, but it also taught the rest of the campers and staff how to accept, help and respect those with special needs.
Camp Dror taught us that leadership is not about a title or a designation, it’s about bringing people together and creating a community that is one step closer to making the world a better place. I learned how to understand other people’s opinions and look deeper into ordinary things, how powerful words are and how important expressing yourself is. The youth of today are the future; we can all be leaders in our own way – in our homes with our siblings, our friends, anything and everyone. - Rebecca B., Camp Dror Leadership Program Participant 2018

OU-JLIC AT IDC HERZLIYA The Orthodox Union’s Jewish Learning Initiative on Campus (OU-JLIC) was created to help Jewish students observe key aspects of Jewish life on college campuses. Currently, young couples serve as teachers and Torah role models on 23 university campuses in North America, learning with students one-on-one, coordinating weekly classes, event and community building. In September 2017, OU JLIC expanded to include its first Israeli campus at IDC Herzliya. In the two years since the JLIC couple, Rabbi Josh and Margot Botwinick, began the entire dynamic, Jewish life for University students has changed. For the first time, they have Minyanim 3 times a day, an unbelievably vibrant Shabbat community with personal and Halachic guidance, Chavrutot, Shiurim and Chesed events. Thanks to JLIC, Jewish life for Olim and Anglos in Herzliya is flourishing and dozens of students are moving into the community rather than commute due to a religious environment at campus. To date, JLIC Herzliya has provided meaningful outreach Jewish educational and life services for more than 450 students.

MAKOM BALEV YOUTH MOVEMENT
OU Israel Makom Balev Youth Centers offer leisure-time activities and leadership programs for kids aged 10-18 from the National Religious school system in Israel’s peripheral and low socioeconomic areas. Since Makom Balev opened its doors, tens of thousands of teens and pre-teens have participated in activities throughout the country, enjoying programming that deepens their connection to Jewish values and the Land of Israel. Makom Balev offers value-based programming and constructive, empowering experiences that connect teens to the community. A major element of Makom Balev’s message is the importance of community service: The counselors organize and oversee volunteer projects in which Makom Balev teens assist the elderly, help needy families, volunteer in hospitals and senior citizen homes, and distribute holiday gift packages to members of Israel’s security forces to express support and appreciation for their service. Makom Balev’s impact has been gratifying and significant. Many Makom Balev members have gone on to leadership roles at the vanguard of Israeli Society. To date peripheral youth have been enriched and strengthened in Makom Balev
EVEN THE HARDEST CASES Makom Balev counselors’ skills are put to the test on a daily basis working with youth at risk in Israel’s peripheral cities and neighborhoods. For Itzhik, a new counselor in a Makom Balev branch in Israel’s North, and a Makom Balev youth alumni, his training and previous experience in the program were crucial in dealing with a case of sexual harassment. The case involved a youth participant that was sexually harassed by one of his peers. Working quickly, Itzhik discretely updated the boy’s school psychologist and local welfare authorities to facilitate a timely intervention. Simultaneously, Makom Balev’s staff provided immediate psychological and emotional support. “Thanks to my training, I was able to react immediately, realizing my student’s distress,” remarks Itzhik. “For us, our most important intervention was just being there, talking to him non-stop and providing round-the-clock support.” “We would like to thank your organization for its welcome work in our city and for the changes you have successfully made among the teenagers and residents of Sderot. Your help is important and makes a big contribution to Sderot’s strength and inner wellbeing.” - Elad Kalimi, Deputy Mayor of Sderot
“Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your considerable contribution to our youth and community of Kiryat Gat, and for the rich and diverse value-based activities for the city’s children during the year. This work has been a great help both pratically and emotionally.” - Aviram Dahara, Mayor of Kiryat Gat
Four months after the incident, the boy received massive therapeutic treatment and support from both his school and Makom Balev. Thanks to their quick intervention, Makom Balev was able to minimize the major psychological and emotional trauma this boy would have suffered. 2018

THE JACK E. GINDI
ORAITA PROGRAM The Jack E. Gindi Oraita Program serves as a supportive environment for at-risk teens primarily in low socio-economic communities. At-risk young adults are often forced to deal with a variety of personal, familial, and social problems. The majority of at-risk adolescents lack a significant role model and require assistance in a myriad of fields. The Oraita program reaches youth who are exposed to street culture and provides them with a safe place and stepping stone towards independent living. We strive to help them construct a positive self-identity, and help them create and improve various life skills. The Oraita Club offers a balance of fun and values, games and growth. Whether in a discussion group or around the pool table, teens form close relationships with counselors who are mentors and role models, and friendships that last a lifetime. We are proud that 81% of our OU Israel Youth Centers graduating seniors enrolled in Pre-Army Preparation Programs, Yeshivot, National Service or the IDF.

730 Youth in 11 Centers
“...LET ME TALK...” Beni (not his real name) was traumatized when he was eight years old and developed a permanent stutter. Socially, he became an introvert, even changing schools several times. Growing up he rarely talked to anyone, spending his free time on the street, playing with his cell phone. The Oraita Club’s counselor noticed Beni alone and invited him to join the club. Attending the club, Beni began to transform. He was socially accepted, meeting people who wanted him to belong. Instead of playing pool at the club, Beni just wanted to talk. He would talk for hours with the Club’s counselors, just wanting people to listen. In order to develop his strengths, his Oraita mentor referred him to the Dimona City Youth Council and the Ha’Noar Oved V’Lomed Youth Movement where he blossomed. Shortly after, Beni shared with Oraita that he had tried to commit suicide several times, prior to Oraita.

Beni talked about his dream to become to act, an impossible feat with his stutter. With Oraita’s help, Beni joined a drama group and a miracle happened…Beni can act and he doesn’t stutter. He even put on his own show for the entire Oraita club. Working with Oraita, Beni learned to love himself, is happy and excelling. He wants to achieve a lot with his new lease on life. With Oraita’s help, Beni enlisted and is now serving in the Israeli Defense Forces. He even speaks publicly, addressing groups about his past and his personal journey of expression with his lecture, “Let Me Talk…” 2018

THE PEARL & HAROLD JACOBS
ZULA OUTREACH CENTER The Pearl and Harold Jacobs Zula Outreach Center is a safe haven for at-risk teens, primarily from Religious Zionist backgrounds. Typically, these teens and young adults have become estranged from their families, teachers, and normative frameworks, and are often experiencing a crisis in faith. Many are involved in substance abuse or other antisocial behaviors. Located in the heart of Yerushalayim, the Zula’s team of counselors and educational professionals guides troubled teens, and helps them return to normative social, religious, and scholastic frameworks. The Zula is a place of warmth and acceptance, where teens are welcome to drop in and “hang out,” as an alternative to the night life out on the streets of the city. The Zula’s come-as-you-are policy creates a non-judgmental atmosphere of mutual trust and acceptance that allows troubled kids to hear and be heard, to learn, to connect with positive role models, and to find their way back to their families, schools and communities.

DON’T GIVE UP... N. D. (18) from Gush Etzion, was caught in the middle of her parents’ bitter divorce. N. became more distant starting to spend more time with new friends, experimenting with new lifestyles – using drugs and alcohol. She even began dating an Israeli-Arab – a dangerous relationship for a religious girl from a Jewish family. N. ran away once her mom found out and intervened. She became homeless on the streets of Yerushalayim, turning to drugs and alcohol for an escape. It was a close friend who took her to the Zula, where she met a life-line, Harel Chezroni and his staff. “The Zula for me was a refuge where I could take a break from life. There I had people to talk to, unlike at home,” N. remarks. “I could talk about anything and not be judged. I realized that I was angry and that’s what was keeping me in distress.”
WHAT HAS THE ZULA DONE FOR YOU
More than 50% of Zula youth have decreased their use of alcohol and drugs 67% have increased their self-confidence 75% of Zula youth have dramatically improved their relationship with their parents
With the Zula and Chezroni’s help, N. was able to find her way back. Working hard, she stopped using drugs and alcohol. She finished school and even met her future husband. “One thing that people kept on telling me was, ‘Don’t give up on yourself!” Today, N. is finishing National Service and recently got married. 2018
