DEAR FRIENDS, The OU Israel Annual Report is a rare opportunity to stand back and enjoy the big picture of the year’s accomplishments – and they are many. The report itself is the result of intensive effort, and it is our way of sharing with our friends, supporters, and partners the excitement and enthusiasm we at the OU Israel Center enjoy each and every day. Some of the projects may be familiar to you from previous years; others are new additions to OU Israel’s rich array of programs, and may draw your eye more easily. But we at OU Israel are equally excited by both the ongoing, well-established projects and the new initiatives. Both the old and the new enable us to extend our reach and expand the impact we’re having, changing things for the better and inspiring hundreds of thousands of people in Israel each year. There are so many needs that must be addressed, so many good causes, and so much of what we do involves reaching out to the community at large through volunteerism and chesed. But as the Israeli branch of the OU, we have two primary responsibilities: First, to ensure that English-Speaking visitors to Israel and those who are fortunate enough to make Aliyah from English- speaking countries, primarily North America, have a place in the heart of Israel where they can connect with one another and with the spiritual, physical, and communal beauty of our homeland; and second, to cultivate the Jewish leadership of tomorrow and beyond, both among the Anglo community in Israel and abroad,
and for the entire Jewish People. Every day, OU Israel’s youth programs get teenagers off the streets, give them guidance, and shower them with יובל היא לירושלים unconditional love, so that tomorrow they will build healthier homes and families, and a healthier society - by passing the gifts of love and understanding they have received to the next generation. We are one nation. Despite the variety of colors, shapes, sizes, faces, customs, and traditions, we are all brothers and sisters, and the love for this awe-inspiring family is what gives me –and the 250 members of OU Israel’s staff – the strength, passion, and determination to work towards a better future for our large and growing family. OU Israel offers something for every Jewish soul, and we grow stronger every day as we learn to embrace the similarities and differences that form the breathtaking mosaic of Jewish life. The positive energy that runs through every new or continuing OU Israel program or project is what makes us start and end every day with a smile. I invite you to share this passion and to be a part of this energy. Join us as we go from strength to strength!

PERSONAL STORY “Prior to my aliyah, I knew very little Ivrit. Moreover, I have always had difficulty learning languages. As a result, I am limited to lectures, classes and other activities in English.” Thankfully, someone told me about the OU Israel Center. I began attending classes there immediately, often going to the Center four or five days a week. It has been a second home for me. The OU Israel Center provides so much more than outstanding Torah shiurim. There are weekly lectures on Israel participants and Jewish history, self-improvement, books, and other aspects of Jewish culture, the chagim and more. I’ve gone on numerous tiyulim, as well. All of this programming enriches my life greatly. Every friend I have in Israel I made at the OU Israel Center. I could not be more grateful. There is no replacement for the Center, nor is there any institution that in any way, shape, or form even comes close to providing what the Center does. I honestly don’t know what I would do without it.”

JCHAT OU Israel’s Community of Young Professionals Recognizing how difficult it is for young olim to find and join a new community, The OU Israel Center launched JCHAT - The Jerusalem Community Hub for Anglos and Torah, in 2016. The program provides inspiration and connection for singles and young families, through shiurim, social events, and rabbinic mentorship and guidance. In the past year, over 1000 people participated in more than a dozen JCHAT events, from large communal gatherings such as concerts, holiday celebrations, and Shabbat dinners, to tiyulim, shiurim, and volunteer projects. Through the power of social media, JCHAT keeps participants connected via an active WhatsApp group and a vibrant Facebook presence.

“I moved to Israel just five years ago, in my mid-thirties, and from Day 1 have enjoyed attending the Seymour J. Abrams OU Israel Center for shiurim whenever my schedule allows. I was thrilled when I heard about the recent formation of JCHAT, which targets Anglo Olim of my generation. Moving to Israel at this stage of the game has not been easy, and finding the right community is challenging for many of us. B”H I am so blessed to feel at home here and have made many friends, but finding a broader community to feel a part of definitely presents a challenge for us Anglos. NCSY ISRAEL
The teenage years are challenging even under optimal conditions; add the additional trials and tribulations of aliyah to the mix, and the challenge is even greater. Anglo teens in Israel confront tough questions of identity and acculturation: They have left behind communities and familiar surroundings, and are not yet comfortable in their new environment. They struggle with cultural differences, social limitations, the language barrier, and the desire to contribute to society without a framework in which they can do so. NCSY Israel helps English-Speaking teenage immigrants integrate into Israeli society by providing a framework that allows them to take pride in who they are and where they come from, as they become fully acculturated members of Israeli society. Our new partnership with Nefesh B’Nefesh enables us to expand our resources, extend our reach, and have a greater impact on the teen olim population. For a growing number of immigrants from English-speaking communities, NCSY Israel is a crucial stepping stone in the process of absorption, producing socially welladjusted, emotionally healthy, proud Israeli teens. This past year, NCSY Israel launched our all-new Teen Regional Board, comprised of outstanding NCSYers representing their respective high schools. Each teen acts as a liaison and leader for olim in their own high school, and also takes an active role in developing new, innovative programs.

PERSONAL STORY “My name is Yaakov and I’m 16 years old. Adjusting to life in Israel hasn’t been easy for me. I’ve changed schools a few times, and I’ve had some academic challenges because I have dyslexia… I was turned on to NCSY by my brother who went to YTA and heard about it there. I went to my first event reluctantly. I was skeptical that I would connect to anyone there and have a good time. It ended up being a blast. I met great people from different places and different schools. It opened a whole new world for me of teens my age, to meet and get to know, and they were all there just to have a good time together.

The events and Shabbatonim are well-run, fun, and inspirational. I haven’t missed a single one since I started going! NCSY has become a place for me that is not connected to school. We made aliyah almost 5 years ago; Suri and Mendy were both enthusiastic about aliyah, and although their adjustment is not yet complete, they are moving in the right direction. The area that has been most challenging, and which very easily could have been a“deal breaker” for successful aliyah, was the social and safety issues that we all face when making a big move that involves major cultural and lifestyle changes. The one constant, and the most significant factor in their lives, has been the social and interpersonal activities, events, and friendships that they have gained and maintained through Yachad Israel. Yachad Israel’s effort to make the experiences fully inclusionary while at the same time taking into consideration the safety and success of Yachad members is what makes all Yachad Israel activities so special. Every single member of the staff – from the professionals to the volunteers, have made the experiences enjoyable, significant, fun, and memorable. I cannot imagine what our aliyah would have been like without “Team Yachad. ”We have mementos and photos posted on every wall of our home to remind us of joyous times spent together with our friends from Yachad Israel.

TORAH TIDBIT READERSHIP STATS 90%

READ TT COVER TO COVER SHARE TT WITH FAMILY MEMBERS
PERSONAL STORY TALE OF A SOON-TO-BE OLEH CHADASH It started several years ago on my first trip to Israel. I went to shul on Friday night with my cousin in Raanana and there was a table piled with Parsha sheets of all colors. Alas, they were all in Hebrew. Not my forte. I was overwhelmed and a bit sad. And then I spotted a booklet called Torah Tidbits. I looked over its front page and then flipped through it to find, to my delight, that it was written in English. I took a copy and started reading it during the Rabbi’s D’var Torah - which I didn’t understand - and I liked what I saw. So many different features! I continued reading after dinner and then some more on Shabbat afternoon. At the table on Shabbat, my cousin and host read the Lead Tidbit and a couple of other features to his family and guests; Lively discussions ensued.
“I bring TT to my shul every week. The way people grab for their copies, it makes me a celebrity.”
500,000
copies per year
I spent the following Shabbat with an old friend in Maaleh Adumim. And guess what I found there? The latest issue of Torah Tidbits. I took a copy and devoured it over Shabbat. In addition to all the Torah articles, I saw the schedule of classes at the
OU Israel Center - a place I knew nothing about at the time. But, with only a couple of days left to my stay, I managed to attend and enjoy a number of inspiring shiurim. When I returned home, people asked me what impressed me the most. I answered: The Kotel, Machane Yehuda... and, believe it or not, this weekly OU publication, Torah Tidbits.
10,000
print copies every week
Each week after my return, I went onto ttidbits.com, read some things on-line and downloaded and printed a whole bunch more so I’d have good reading for Shabbat. And then I became a dedicated listener of Torah Tidbits Audio. All of this was a number of years ago. My feelings about Israel and my future there have grown over the years. My wife and I and our children are now planning Aliyah. Torah Tidbits does not get all the credit for our decision, but it definitely played a positive, significant role. Thank You, OU Israel, for your part in our new life in Israel. - Moishe M. 2017

IN SEPTEMBER 2017, OU-JLIC EXPANDED TO INCLUDE ITS FIRST ISRAELI CAMPUS:
IDC IN HERZLIYA A new JLIC couple settled in Herzliya, with the goal of working with the English-speaking students on the IDC campus. Religious life on campus had been sorely lacking until OU-JLIC opened its doors, and the initiative took off quickly: The first Shabbat program was jampacked with students for Kabbalat Shabbat, and the singing and ruach that filled the room were amazing.
“What is so incredible is the student body here at IDC. Watching everyone step up and join in the JLIC family has been nothing short of truly inspiring. I know with certainty that this is only the beginning of an incredible community. “ - Yocheved Rabhan, 3rd Year, France
PERSONAL STORY “Ever since JLIC came to IDC this year, my year could not be better. We became a family right away, making Shabbat something to look forward to and making the weekdays more meaningful and enjoyable. JLIC gives us the opportunity to build and share OUR community with motivated people who are looking to make the change we want to see in the world. Kol hakavod to Josh and Margo for putting in so much effort, and to everyone who was involved in making this international Jewish family into something that is going to last forever!!”

The oneg Shabbat later that evening was attended by over 90 students - and that was only the beginning. With two shiurim each week, challah bakes, an Aliya party, Kiddush in the Park, and so much more - all in the first few weeks of operation - OU-JLIC is quickly becoming more than just another club: it’s a family. Students with Yeshiva Day School backgrounds have begun to give “Peer Shiurim,” sparking a contagious enthusiasm for Torah and spirituality. JLIC has become the students’ “home away from home,” providing a sense of community that continues to grow – both in numbers and in commitment to Jewish values.

Since Makom BaLev opened its doors, tens of thousands of teens and pre-teens have participated in Clubhouse activities throughout the country, enjoying programming that deepens their connection to Jewish values and the Land of Israel. Makom BaLev’s impact has been gratifying and significant. Many Makom BaLev members have gone on to leadership roles at the vanguard of Israeli Society. Makom BaLev Youth Centers are located in Chatzor HaGlitlit, Nahariya, Netanya, Maaleh Adumim, Beit Shemesh, Cholon, Rehovot, Kiryat Malachi, Kiryat Gat, and Sderot. Makom BaLev offers values-based programming and constructive, empowering experiences that connect kids to the community. A major element of Makom BaLev’s message is the importance of community service: The counselors organize and oversee volunteer projects in which Makom BaLev kids assist the elderly, help needy families, volunteer in hospitals and senior citizen homes, and distribute holiday gift packages to members of Israel’s security forces to express support and appreciation for their service. This past Purim, teens in Makom BaLev branches throughout Israel prepared hundreds of gift packages, which they personally delivered to I.D.F. soldiers - among them Makom BaLev “graduates” – on I.D.F. bases across the country.

THE GESHARIM BAR/BAT MITZVAH Program for 6th graders that prepares them for their Bar or Bat Mitzvah and the transition to adulthood. For most Makom BaLev kids, this is the only Bar Mitzvah celebration they will have. Our dedicated counselors, together with teachers from the local schools, introduce participants to the world of Jewish values and mitzvot, focusing on Jewish values such as honoring parents, helping others, and more. The Gesharim Program helps participants understand their own role as links in the chain of Jewish continuity, and the program’s finale, a moving ceremony attended by the teens and their parents on the peak of Massada at dawn, drives this message home in an unforgettable way.
LEADERSHIP PROGRAM Program for 10th graders teaches leadership skills, personal empowerment, and community service. The unique training process qualifies these boys and girls to serve as youth counselors and volunteers in their communities. Leadership trainees are given the opportunity to put their skills to practical use. Weekly meetings tackle various aspects of leadership (Leadership through Personal Example, Developing Leadership Abilities, Discussion Group: Who Is a Leader? Getting to Know Your Self, and

TEFILLIN WORKSHOP
The Tefillin Workshop connects kids to the mitzvah of tefillin and other holy objects. Club members examine and study the tefillin. They learn about the stages in the process of creating tefillin, and try their hand at scribal writing - with quill and ink, on real parchment. The Tefillin Workshop delves into the essence and the significance of the mitzvah from the dawn of our peoplehood, and examines the relevance of tefillin to contemporary Jewish identity - all from an enjoyable and experiential angle. To sum up the process, workshop participants lead a
mini-workshop on the meaning of tefillin for the younger members.
PHOTO-THERAPY COURSE FOR GIRLS (Kiryat Malachi and Kiryat Gat Branches) Course for girls offers teens a constructive means of coping with the challenging and rapidly-changing world around them. The girls are taught to combine photography and creative writing, affording them an additional medium for self-expression. Participants learn to share a part of their inner world through images and words, and the results are displayed in a well-attended exhibition, and offered for sale to the public.

It presents an array of pre-army options, and counselors help each participant find the path that suits him best. By the end of the weekend, the kids come away with a clear idea of the path they will take after high school.
SUMMER LEADERSHIP PROGRAM Every summer, Makom BaLev members set out to the north of Israel for a Leadership Program. Nearly 100 boys and girls participate in a program that deals with various aspects of leadership, and includes hiking, volunteering, and contributing to society. The program introduces teens to great Jewish and Israeli leaders, and offers them a fresh and exciting perspective on our homeland.
The Netanya Branch of OU Israel’s Makom BaLev Youth Center offers weekly activities for 7th and 8th graders. From the time he entered 7th grade, “A.” was a regular participant. In 11th grade, A. experienced a religious crisis. He had deep, serious questions about his faith, and he sent his Makom BaLev counselor a letter in which he presented many of his personal dilemmas and uncertainties. His Makom BaLev counselor scrambled to help A. avoid disaster. A. removed his kippa and decided to stop observing Shabbat. He notified his parents that he was no longer religious and he refused to go home; instead, he took refuge in his Makom BaLev counselor’s home. A.’s parents were crushed. They refused to take him back home if he would not observe Shabbat, and were unable to accept their son’s new situation. After countless phone conversations with the parents, and after Haim Pelzner, OU Israel’s Assistant Director for Programming became involved, A.’s parents agreed that their son would be allowed to return home – but only if he agreed that he would not desecrate the Shabbat around any members of the family. “A” returned to his parents’ home, under the constant supervision of the Makom BaLev staff and Haim Pelzner – including one-on-one conversations with “A” and discussions with the parents. Slowly, as A.’s questions were answered, his faith was strengthened. He began to observe Shabbat, and his kippa returned to its place atop his head. A. became a baal teshuvah. When this process was complete, A. participated in a Makom BaLev Leadership Seminar. He went on to become an outstanding and much-loved Makom BaLev counselor, and now serves as our Coordinator for Special Events and Programs. His personal journey enables him to reach teens that others are unable to reach. - Anonymous, Netanya 2017

One even told us that he had Oraita is never participated in a Seder home.” in his life and he didn’t know what it was all about. We began to think about holding a group Seder for all the Clubhouse kids. About a week before the holiday we got together to plan, and then went to the supermarket and did some holiday shopping together. The kids chose grape juice for the four cups and some food for the Seder meal. (Some of them had a better idea of what was needed because the previous week we had shopped for a Kimcha dPishcha Charity Drive for needy families…). On the Eve of Pesach, five boys arrived at our house about two hours before the holiday began. They helped set things up and lay the table, grated the horseradish, and roasted the egg and the shank bone. The holiday spirit was everywhere, and the air was crackling with excitement… After the kids switched off their cell phones (which was no small feat!), we went together to a festive service at the Central Synagogue in town. For one of the boys, this was the very first time he attended prayers in a synagogue! We came home,
Soon enough, a competition began between the Oraita kids and our own children: Who will steal the afikoman?! To keep everyone happy, we had 2 cloth bags for afikoman – and somehow…both were stolen! One by our kids, the other by the Oraita boys. Everyone got presents! We all took turns reading from the Hagaddah. We added stories and ideas between the many question raised by the kids – our own kids, and our guests. Even during the festive meal, we continued to tell the story of the Exodus from Egypt; for some of our guests, this was the first time they had heard the story! We sang the songs the kids had learned before the holiday via a WhatsApp a link to Seder songs. Just as we were finishing the Seder, after midnight, three more kids from our Oraita group who had finished their own Seders at home joined us. We sat back down, had another round of dessert…and told some more stories. At around 1:00 am, the boys set out for home on foot, satisfied and happy. We thank God, and everyone else who helped make this an unforgettable Seder night – for the kids, and for our family… May we spend next Pesach together, in the rebuilt Yerushalayim! -Ariel Shpier, Director of the Nazareth Illit Oraita Club

THE PEARL & HAROLD JACOBS
ZULA OUTREACH CENTER The Pearl and Harold Jacobs Zula Otreach Center is a safe haven for at-risk teens, primarily from Religious Zionist backgrounds. Typically, these teens and young adults have become estranged from their families, teachers, and normative frameworks, and are often experiencing a crisis in faith. Many are involved in substance abuse or other antisocial behaviors. Located in the heart of Yerushalayim, The Zula’s team of counselors and educational professionals guides troubled teens, and helps them return to normative social, religious, and scholastic frameworks. The Zula is a place of warmth and acceptance, where teens are welcome to drop in and “hang out,” as an alternative to the night life out on the streets of the city. The Zula’s come-as-you-are policy creates a non-judgmental atmosphere of mutual trust and acceptance that allows troubled kids to hear and be heard, to learn, to connect with positive role models, and to find their way back to their families, schools and communities.

Final Recording Sessions – The Zula’s disc of vocal and instrumental music, all performed by Zula participants, interlaced with inspiring Hasidic stories, was completed this year. Some 20 teens, in conjunction with Zula counselors and Zula performers, were joined by Zula “graduates” and staff members from the past in this unique project.
n
The final product is the result of two years of practice and recording sessions. The goal was to offer a taste of The Zula’s atmosphere and energy to outsiders, and to illustrate how The Zula uses the power of music to connect and heal. The process of producing the disc was an empowering experience for the teens. Those with musical talent were given an opportunity to showcase their abilities and to learn about the world of professional music. They learned how to turn their talent into a vocation, and spent quality time with counselors and teens with similar talents and interests, both in The Zula and in other settings. Aside from the musical experience, the process allowed them to work as a team, improving their interpersonal skills and their ability to work together toward a common goal. Two singles have been released, which have been aired on Galei Zahal, Galei Israel, ad Radio Moreshet.

Promotional Documentary Film – The Zula is hard at work on a documentary film, based on the real-life stories of Zula kids. The film is scheduled for release in early 2018, and will be aired on social media and web-based channels.
Freedom Fighters – Over the summer months, one of the girls’ counselors initiated an independent-living summer experiment for Zula girls. The girls lived in an apartment adjacent to the counselor’s home in a community in the Binyamin area, under the close supervision and guidance of the counselor and her family. A normative daily routine was created, based on employment that was secured for the girls, workshops and discussion sessions, social activities and quality time together, Kabbalat Shabbat, and Torah learning. 8 teens participated in the two-month program.
An Evening of Inspiration with R’ Yankele Shemesh – Rav Shlomo Carlebach’s personal assistant, Yankele Shemesh joined us at The Zula for an evening of inspirational stories and music. R’ Yankele shared the story of his own journey from addiction to Jewish observance with the help of Rav Carlebach z”l, and he and The Zula staff and participants joined together to make beautiful music.
Pre-Yom Yerushalayim visit by Yitzchak Meir and Shlomo Katz – These two famous musicians, who performed at the OU Israel Yom Yerushalayim Gala, visited the Zula and joined the music circle, for firsthand experience of The Zula’s important work and unique atmosphere.

Uman Expedition – 25 girls, accompanied by Zula counselors, traveled to the Ukraine to visit sites of Jewish religious and historical significance. The participants paid their own way, and felt that their money was well spent.
PERSONAL STORY
Playback Theater – This summer, as part of a farewell party for one of The Zula’s counselors, a few participants put on a play in which they told their life stories and described the challenges they face. The performance allowed them to laugh, cry, and identify with one another’s crises and accomplishments.
Musical Summer Celebration with Bini Landau – To kick off the summer season, Bini Landau, one of The Zula’s most popular singers, performed for some 250 kids and staff members.
“I want to tell you a story about my life – and the new lease on life I’ve been given as a gift. I was thrown out of every framework I had ever been in – and I was living in a dormitory for girls where everyone had already given up on. I was wandering the streets of Yerushalayim, hanging around the pubs and sleeping in the forest and other places. I was down and out, depressed, less than human. I felt that I had no future and that there was nothing to live for. You can’t imagine what I went through.
And then I came to the Zula, almost by mistake; my friends brought me in. Suddenly, I discovered a whole new reality. I met special people who simply believed in me and didn’t give up on me. They accepted me as I am and didn’t judge me. They were all so warm and positive, and they gave me strength and built me up, celebrated and YITZCHAK MEIR: complimented even the smallest steps I took in the right di“I have no words right now. rection. When the people at the Zula found out that I know how to play an instrument, they said, ‘Come on, join us in the studio and let’s record some music.’ What followed were two very special years in which I began to believe in myself again. I
felt valued, and that I was being lifted out of the abyss. I saw that my dream of expressing the goodness in me was coming true through the music, the singing, which was even being recorded and publicized! For the first time, I was in the spotlight, and I was being asked to let my own light shine.
“If you’re in a bad mood, just come and talk and off-load, it’s the greatest feeling in the world.”
Before we produced the disc I never dreamed that I could be a part of something this big. But the experience has given me tremendous strength, and has been therapeutic for me and many of the other people involved. They say that music can heal – and here I am, living proof that it’s true. Rather than focusing on the negative things in my life, I began to focus on the positive things. Now, I’m on solid ground. I have stability, self-esteem, and trust. Thanks to the change I went through at the Zula, I met a wonderful guy – and with God’s help, we’ll be getting married soon. Here’s my message to you: If things are hard for you, if you’ve stopped believing in yourself, if your life is in the dumps – don’t lose hope. I’ve been there, and I know how it feels to be lost. But there is one place, a special and amazing place, that believes in us just as we are, and really brings us back to life.” - Limor Levy, Yerushalayim 2017
