INTRODUCTION About the book This book is part of our ongoing commitment to help others and give you the best possible chance of being the best instructor you can be.

We have put together this, strive to drive the golden nugget trail book, which is full of hints and �ps to help you and give your students the best possible informa�on and reference points, that are not taught in other books. It will help and support ADIs / PDIs or even parents teaching their children. The book has been designed with our experiences and knowledge gained through our many years of teaching. Both Kev & Neil are ORDIT registered trainers, we wanted to share those years of training in the driver training industry in this book.

Through reading this book you will see poten�al issues and be able to turn them into solu�ons and give your students the best possible chances of becoming safe and considerate drivers and passing their driving test.

One of the main reasons we thought of crea�ng this book was from one situa�on that happened to Neil while on a driving lesson and here is that story: I took a student who could drive on a lesson and asked him if he could do a le� reverse around the corner.

He replied “of course” and he seem very confident. “Ok, pull up on the le� and reverse around the corner” I asked.

A�er a pause I asked, “Ok when you’re ready”, he looked at me and said, “where are the spots”.

I looked at him and said, “what spots?”

“The ones to guide me around the corner” he replied, I replied “no spots in this car”, he said “so how am I going to get it around the corner?”

I gave him a puzzled look and said, “are you telling me you will put spots on your car a�er passing your test, or do you think your car comes with them on?”

He pondered for a while and said, “what do I need to do?”

My reply was, “guide it around the curb. How can you find yourself a reference point?” A�er discussing where and how he might find a reference point, that light bulb moment came.

With this now in hand, we a�empted the turn. Once we had a�empted it a few �mes he said, “what am I doing wrong?”

I helped him find some points of turn and this changed the result and he never looked back.

The morale of this statement is they cannot work it out for themselves if you give them the informa�on to complete the goal first.

For me to help you – you need to help them understand what they are thinking and feeling.

Hints and Tips to make teaching turning le� easier.

Looking and Point of Turn Hint/Tip Checking junc�on for obstruc�ons, the point of turn should be when the kerb disappears from the bo�om le� hand side corner of windscreen Speed and Gear Hint/Tip Gear selected at a place where it allows the student �me to be able to inves�gate the junc�on and be able to turn safely.

Three hazard lines in your road before the junc�on is a good reference point to have the gear selected and off the clutch.

Posi�on Hint/Tip Normal driving posi�on. Where the kerb is posi�oned on front windscreen and posi�on of kerb in le� hand mirror.

Mirrors and Signal Hint/Tip Start to check your mirrors when you can clearly see the white lines of the junc�on ahead. It’s too late if you can see the junc�on fully.

Hints and �ps to make teaching turning right easier.

Looking and Point of Turn Hint and �p The point of turn is when the right door mirror is in line with the centre line of the new road.

The posi�on to stop should be so the right-wing mirror has blocked out the corner of the junc�on Speed and Gear Hint and Tip Judging whether you need to stop should have been decided at the point of gear change.

The gear should be selected at a place where it’s safe and allows �me for the pupil to be able to have to observe what’s in the new road and where to turn, 3 lines from the point of turn.

Posi�on Hint and Tip Be in the correct posi�on at five lines from the junc�on and six inches away from the centre line which can be seen in the right door mirror.

Mirrors and Signal Hint and Tip Check mirrors at eight lines away from the junc�on and signal at 6 lines away.

Mirrors will also be checked again before turning.

Hints and Tips for Emerging from a Junc�on Looking and Point of Turn Hint and Tip Posi�on your right-wing mirror on top of the give way line if stopping to turn right.

This puts the front of the car just behind the give way lines.

Speed and Gear Hint and Tip Assess whether open or closed. Closed is always first gear. Open could be first or second depending on what you can see or what is happening.

Posi�on Hint and Tip Use your mirrors to see the posi�on of the car. If turning right the white lines will be in the middle of the right-wing mirror.

Speed and Gear Hint and Tip Slow down on approach even if you are on the main road following the road ahead.

Hints and �ps for Roundabouts Looking and Point of Turn Hint and Tip Give yourself lots of space and �me to find the gaps so you don’t have to stop.

Stay in your lane if following the road ahead.

Hints and Tips for Traffic Lights and Pedestrian Crossings Looking and Point of Turn Always look for places where pedestrians can cross. It might not be at a crossing.

Speed and Gear Be at the correct speed and gear so that if you need to stop you will be able to safely.

This will change depending on your vision of the crossing and surrounding area.

Posi�on Check you are in the correct posi�on for the direc�on you intend to go.

Use road markings and signs to help you.

Mirrors and Signal Once you have no�ced a pedestrian crossing or traffic light, check your surroundings to gain as much informa�on as possible. If you have vehicles close behind, you can change your speed to avoid someone going into the back of you if you must stop quickly.

Hints and Tips for Mee�ng Traffic Looking and Point of Turn When going through gaps, look at the gap and not the vehicles either parked or coming towards you.

Posi�on Get into posi�on early to show your inten�ons to other road users.

Your posi�on will act as a signal to other road users.

Speed and Gear Assess early what size of gap you are approaching. This help you choose what speed and gear you need.

The smaller the gap, the lower the speed and gear.

Mirrors and Signal Use your mirrors to gain informa�on on what is happening behind you.

This will also help with deciding whether it is safe to go or wait.

Hints and Tips for One Way Streets Looking and Point of Turn No�ce all the direc�onal signs and the order signs that tell you what you can and cannot do.

Be aware of vehicles that may have missed the signs and are going the wrong way.

Speed and Gear Decide how much space you have available and match your speed and gear to the space available.

Posi�on Posi�on in a place so everyone knows what your inten�ons are.

Recognise signs and road markings that will give you informa�on about the new road you are going to enter.

Hints and Tips for Dual Carriageways Looking When approaching or following a large vehicle make sure that you can see their mirrors so they can also see you.

When travelling at faster speeds the gap between you and the car in front needs to be at least 2 seconds in good condi�ons.

Posi�on Always posi�on your vehicle in the le� lane unless you are overtaking or about to turn right.

As you are going faster you will approach hazards sooner than you realise so make sure you leave a gap big enough to be able to stop safely without harsh braking.

Speed and Gear When joining a dual carriageway, get to the speed limit as quickly and as safely as possible so you do not become a hazard.

Use the highest gear which will reduce the revs of the car and use less fuel.

Mirrors and Signal Situa�ons will develop quicker at faster speeds so keep checking in front and the rear so you can an�cipate and prepare your car before the situa�on affects you.

Signal in good �me to allow others �me to react to what you are about to do.

Hints and Tips for Motorways Looking Look as far as you can see to spot hazards at the earliest opportunity.

Signs are placed above and to the sides and will give you informa�on to help you plan your journey.

Posi�on Posi�on yourself far enough back to be able to see around the vehicle you are about to overtake.

Give yourself space and �me to an�cipate any situa�ons that may develop.

Speed and Gear Adjust your speed to the vehicles already in lane one for you to be able to join in the gap safely.

If there is no gap to join, use the hard shoulder and join as soon as it is safe to do so.

Mirrors and Signal Check your mirrors to allow vehicles to join into lane 1 and then move back when safe to do so.

When joining the motorway, tell other road users what your inten�ons are by signalling early allowing them �me to accommodate you joining.

Hints and Tips for Rural Roads Looking When driving in rural villages, look for clues to iden�fy the hazards early.

Expect the unexpected when driving in rural areas. The hazards might not be what you would normally expect in built up areas.

Posi�on Posi�on your vehicle to be able to see but also so you can be seen.

The road condi�on might also not be as good, and you rarely find curbs at the side of the road.

Speed and Gear Adjust your speed to be able to an�cipate hazards that might occur.

When passing hazards, pass as if you are the hazard and go past at a safe speed to be able to stop if something happens.

Mirrors and Signal Frequently check your mirrors so you gather informa�on on what is happening behind you.

Use your road posi�on as a signal to others of your inten�ons or to clarify your signalling. If others know what you are doing, they can make be�er informed decisions as well.
